The Brooklyn Bruisers are back and heading into the playoffs for the Stanley Cup.  The next few months are going to be a grueling, time consuming, and demanding on every level.  Forget having a personal life, time for friends, and real time with family.  Put all the problems aside and focus on the game.  The cup is within reach, it’s worth the sacrifices made.  The players for the Brooklyn Bruisers aren’t the only ones making the sacrifices.  Their support staff and families are feeling the crunch as well. The last thing Lauren Williams wants is to be working with the Brooklyn Bruisers, especially during the play offs. She hates hockey and hates the time demanded by the team.  Stepping in as the assistant to the Bruisers owner is one thing, spending all her time with the team is another. How can she do her job and avoid the team? There is one player in particular that she will avoid at all cost.  Goalie Mike Beacon ruined her life, broke her heart, and left her hanging out to dry.  She will never let that happen to her again.  She learned the hard way and still carries the scars from being burned.

Mike Beacon never forgot the passionate year he spent with Lauren.  She was his everything, the reason his heart beat.  He had his reasons for leaving her and returning to his wife and daughter.  It wasn’t because he didn’t love her, he had a responsibility to his family.  He had to make sacrifices in order for them to survive what was to come.

Lauren is back in his life.  She’s back with the team.  He’s more than determined to win her heart and keep her by his side this time.  This is the most important win of his life, she’s more important than the Stanley Cup and the team.  The only thing standing in his way is Lauren’s stubbornness and his teenage daughter’s attitude. He’s the toughest goalie in the league and conquering the two women in his life is the hardest game he’s ever played.

Once again Sarina Bowen had my full attention.  In the two previous books of the Brooklyn Bruiser series, readers were given a very distinct and different impression of Lauren Williams.  She was not a very likable or impressionable character.  Sarina let the readers become intimate with the real Lauren hiding beneath the surface.  The woman loved with her complete heart and was badly burned.  To make matters worse, the repercussions of the break up were more than most people could bear.  It’s no wonder she hated everything about hockey.  What impressed me the most was her strength of character, her sense of morality, and her drive to become a better person.  I loved that she didn’t let heartbreak ruin her, she embraced it, moved on and made a good life for herself.  She was a classy woman to be admired.  It’s no wonder Mike Deacon was hopelessly in love with her.

I highly recommend Pipe Dreams by Sarina Bowen.  It can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order.  The Brooklyn Bruisers are out to win your heart.

I laughed. “My kind of guy.”

“I just wonder what it’s like— to be that in love after all that time,” she said, bending forward and resting the curve of her chin on her hand.

“How do you know it has been a long time?” I asked. “Maybe they got married late in life.”

She shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

“Why?” I asked, curious how she’d reached that conclusion.

“There was a familiarity in the way they touched. The way they leaned into one another, the way they walked. It was as if they’d been doing so forever.”

I studied her for a quiet moment, recalling the intensity of her words and the passion in her voice. It was the first time since meeting Katelyn O’Malley, I could actually see a sliver of Laura Stone, the author, somewhere inside.

“I do believe you are a bit of a romantic at heart,” I replied.

She smiled sweetly. “Maybe a hopeless one.”

My hand reached out to hers, a needless gesture since we’d already achieved our goal for the evening and sold everyone on our false marital status.

This time, I touched her because I wanted to.

“Definitely not hopeless,” I said softly, knowing that instant that I was crossing the line between business and pleasure.

And heading straight to the land of hell.

“So, tell me about technical editing,” she said, shifting topics. “How does one get into something like that?”

I suddenly felt like I’d been hit in the face with a bucket of ice water. Here I was, in a dimly lit room, romancing the hell out of a woman I’d just met, and then reality hit.

I was lying to her.

Flat-out lying.

I needed to remember that. “There’s not much to tell,” I said, straightening slightly in my chair. “Rather boring really.”

We continued to chat about our lives. She told me more about her work at the college. I rambled off more lies about mine until the check came around.

I was feeling quite good about myself as I led us outside.

My head was clear.

But then I saw the way the moonlight highlighted her golden-blonde hair. I became mesmerized by the sway of her hips and the soft curves of her body.

I point to the guy behind the glass. “You want Peter’s number?”

For a flash second, a burst of wildfire curls through my veins. It feels like white-hot jealousy. Which is ridiculous since she’s not making love to Peter.

Or me, for that matter, obviously.

I fight off the envy with a full dose of sarcasm. “Have you ever noticed you never have a good pair of headphones when you need them?”

She huffs. “Message received. I’ll just shut up and read a book.” She reaches for her phone on the seat, but accidentally knocks it to the floor of the car. I lean down to pick it up, and when I hand it to her I see her playlist.

I hold her phone behind my head.

I feign surprise. “Oh, did you want your phone back, tiger?”

My brain short-circuits. She would sound hot saying that bent over the bed.

Then in a flurry, she unbuckles her seat belt and lunges at me.

Teague walked along the sidewalk outside the White House, trying his damnedest to figure out why he’d asked her to coffee. Bloody hell, as Kamal would say, had he lost his mind? She shook her head. “No. I was seeing someone back in Boston where I moved from, but it wasn’t going anywhere.” She looked up at him from under her lashes. “And you?”

“No. No time for all that. I work eighty hours a week and spend the other few at the gym or sleeping. I’m not all that exciting.”

She shifted on her chair, and her blouse slipped a touch, giving him a peek at the cleavage that hid beneath. His heart raced and his skin heated.

“Well, from what I heard on the news earlier, today’s been enough excitement for a few years at least.”

He chuckled softly. “It’s been a strange day for sure.”

Ava

I’m just about to text Rowan back when the door opens, and he’s standing in the entrance. His face is unreadable. He doesn’t enter. He only waits looking like the most gorgeous thing I’ve ever seen in a dark suit and tie. He’s still wearing the glasses he’ll occasionally put on when he’s reading, and I rise out of my chair, closing the laptop before I go to him.

“I’m sorry,”I say, reaching out for his hand.

He takes mine and raises it to his lips before pulling me closer.

“What’s troubling you, Ava?”

I look down at my shoes, awkwardness filling my stomach.

“You didn’t have tocome all the way over here.”

“Why are you having second thoughts about the baby?”

I take a deep breath and sigh, lifting my eyes to his.

“It just seems like everything is in such chaos. What makes us want to bring a child into this mess?”

His dark eyes soften as they hold mine, but he doesn’t answer immediately. I love that he doesn’t pat me on the head and tell me to stop being ridiculous. He takes my fears seriously.

“It’s our royal duty,”he finally says.

Now I’m frowning.

“That’s your only reason?”

“No…”

He touches the side of my cheek with his thumb, and I wait.

“I’d also like to see what happens when we take half of you and mix it with half of me.”

My frown softens a little.

“I have dreamed of our babies.”

I remember my chubby, dark-haired daydreams.

“I expect we’ll have an overly analytical, extremely controlled little leader,” he says,and I sigh and nod. “Or a thief who steals cars and races them away.”

“Rowan!”

I push his arm, ready to storm across the room.

Tracey’s Review

I’m going to have to say that this is probably my favorite book yet in the Dirty Players series by author Tia Louise. There are all of the people that we’ve come to know and love (yes, even the crotchety queen mother) in previous books, and plenty of the intrigue that makes this series what it is, but something about this book just really grabbed me, and I could not put it down.

Maybe it’s that Tia Louise has so perfectly touched on issues that concern the world right this very minute. Or the way that Rowan, all alpha but totally adoring, makes Ava feel like she’s finally safe and home. Or that Ava has finally completely come into her own, and is an equal match for her royal husband. All of these things together make for an intriguing, passionate, pertinent read that I thoroughly enjoyed, and that hooked me from the first page.

There is all of the usual sizzle and steam that Tia does so well, and, oh, my goodness, was it wonderfully done here. The magnetic pull between Rowan and Ava is palpable, so much so that it virtually jumps off the page. They’ve absolutely found a way to keep their marriage fresh, and, boy, does it work. They are a true fairy tale, and so completely likable that I would love to see more of them. Cal and Zelda remain a breath of fresh air, and I loved catching up with them here.

DIRTY THIEF is a great blend of passion, political maneuvering, and just desserts, and I highly recommend it. An easy 4.5 stars for Ava, Rowan, and all of the folks from Monagasco. If you haven’t read this series, you’re missing out, and should add it to your TBR right away.

Usually at this point in the series I would start getting bored with it because most times everything is pretty much the same on repeat. What makes this series so successful is the families within the series. There are four large prominent families (soon to be five) featured in the series. The children of these five families each has a story to tell and are begging for their happily ever after. They are unique in their own right but deeply tied to their family bonds, as well as being deeply tied to the members of the other families on Blueberry Lane. So while many things seem to remain the same, the individual characters make the story their own. Expect the unexpected. Katy is going to deliver a great new addition to the Blueberry Lane series.

The Bohemian and the Businessman starts with a scene that is exactly like a scene in Crazy About Cameron, a previous book in the series. Although it’s the same scene, the reader gets to experience the scene from completely different characters POV. The reader gets a different view of how this scene plays out and how it affects the other characters within the scene. In this case it was the wildchid ,Priscila Story and her father’s business protégé, Shane Olson. Shane needs to marry a Story daughter in order to move up the corporate ladder. Priscilla needs a husband in order to claim her inheritance before she’s forty. Due to her wild escapades she desperately needs the money and desperately needs a husband.

Shane and Priscilla are complete opposites. While she lives by the seat of her pants, he meticulously plans every moment of his life with his future goals in mind. Priscilla’s father refuses to turn the business over to one of his daughters. He will only turn it over to one of their husbands. His archaic demands have forced Shane to seek a marriage of convenience with a Story daughter. It has also forced Priscilla to make the wildest, most irresponsible decision of her life. Maybe that decision isn’t so irresponsible after all. Once she gets to know the man under the starched shirts and suits, she’s going to find a man with quiet strength, unexpected compassion, and a heart of gold. The marriage may be starting out in desperation but is quickly moving into something worth hanging onto.
