SEXcerpt…oops I mean Excerpt:

There was a brief pause in his breathing, and she could see he meant it. His dick twitched against her, still trapped within the confines of his clothes. If he’d been one of the wolves of her pack, she knew he’d already have fucked her six ways to Sunday, and not given two shits if he’d hurt her, or if she was willing. The fact he was willing to stop after she’d teased to the point she had, showed what kind of man he was.

“I want you almost as much as I want to drive your Road Runner.” She smiled when his eyes glinted with that hint of humor she loved seeing.

He dropped back down, keeping most of his weight on his elbows. “You got a thing for my car?” His tongue came out, the piercing making her think of naughty things he could do with it.

She nodded. “Oh, yeah, buddy. I definitely think your car is sexy.”

His right brow raised. “I think there’s a country song about that.”

She was having a hard time listening to his words while his mouth began tracing a path along her collarbone. “I think that’s about a tractor.” Her back bowed off the bed just as his lips latched onto her right breast, sucking the tip into his mouth. Good, goddess, she swore her nerve endings wouldn’t survive the tongue lashing.

He placed kisses on her stomach, going lower until he reached her belly button. Jett’s hands gripped her knees, drawing them apart and laying between them, a wicked smile played on his lips. “Watch me, Taryn.” He used the fingers of one hand, holding her pussy open while he made one long swipe with his tongue.

Her eyes widened, utterly transfixed by the sight. That first touch nearly had her coming undone. The bar bell hit her clit, the tiny touch from his piece of jewelry jolted through her system. She closed her eyes, gripping the sheet below her.

Taryn couldn’t keep her eyes open as he began nuzzling her flesh. His talented, yet diabolical tongue, was driving her insane as he lifted her legs over his shoulders, tilting her hips at a better angle, and his tongue slid inside her.

She screamed his name at the feel of him stroking her inner walls with his piercing.

Jett’s big hands held her tighter, his arms wrapped around her thighs, lifting her closer, circling her clit until the bud became hard.

He moved one hand down, stroking through her cream, humming. “You taste fucking amazing. I knew you would, too.” He licked his fingers, making a smacking noise, and then tongued her core as he wiggled his tongue against her clit.

Taryn came as he found just the right pressure, her body bucking against his face while he held her to him, licking and fucking her with his fingers and mouth. He didn’t let her go until he’d finished, his growls adding another layer of ecstasy to her pleasure. She’d never come so hard in her life.

“Jett,” she murmured, twisting her hands in his hair. Her legs shook, her heels dug into his back, and he still pressed kisses along her inner thigh, licking her, gentling his attention on her clit. The man knew just how, when and where to touch a woman. She didn’t want to think of the countless, faceless women he’d done exactly the same thing to. He eased her legs off his shoulders, massaging them before climbing up her body, his breathing labored as he lay over her.

He worked his boxers off, letting them fall off the side of the bed.

The ease which he slid into the cradle of her hips, and the smile that lit his gorgeous face made her heart stop for a second. She could so easily love this man.

His cock bumped against her pussy. “You ready for me?”

She wrapped her legs around his waist, gripping his shoulders for something to hold on to. “Absolutely. Do you need me to show you what to do, or…” He stopped her words with one long thrust, filling her full to bursting. Her wolf wanted to sink her teeth into his shoulder, but she pushed her back. She couldn’t keep her nails from digging into his back as he pushed a little further into her pussy, the tight fit almost too painful, but she relaxed her muscles, allowing him to sink a little more inside.

He pulled back, slipping one hand between them, the other he wrapped under her shoulder. As he used his thumb to play with her clit, she felt him slide all the way inside. She exhaled.

“You okay?” he asked, pausing to look down at her.

She licked her lips, and released her fingers from the death grip they had on him, hoping she hadn’t hurt him, but he didn’t seem to mind. “Yes. I’m fine. You can move.”

Jett’s head bent, and pressed his lips to hers, he kissed her mouth, and she tasted herself on his lips. She sucked his tongue into her mouth as his hips pushed forward. The feel of the piercing was both foreign and erotic as hell.

He pulled his hips back, almost pulling all the way out until only the tip of his cock was inside her. She squeezed her thighs around his hips, not wanting to lose him, making him chuckle.

“Believe me, nothing could make me stop fucking you right now.” He powered back inside.

His words sent a shard of hurt through her. Why she should care he would use such crude words she didn’t know. She assumed the slight bond she’d had to form when saving him was the reason, but she pushed it aside. The feel of him filling her became her sole focus. With each thrust he slid in more easily, her body accepting him as more cream flowed from her while he brought her closer toward the edge again.

Changing the angle, he tilted her hips, pulling a pillow over and placing it under her, he pushed into her faster, rotating his hips on each downward thrust, the swiveling motion hitting her clit each time.

Taryn cried out as he hit the right spot, arching into his strokes again and again.

“Open your eyes. Look at me. Know who is making you come,” he demanded.

Her eyes jerked open. “Jett,” she screamed, her head thrown back, the pleasure so intense it took all her willpower to do as he’d commanded. Their bodies slammed together, his groan was accompanied by a loud growl. He let go of her shoulder and gripped the headboard, she was sure she heard the wood splinter as his thrusts increased. She didn’t think she could come again, but then he pulled out, flipping her to her stomach, raising her onto her knees, and drove into her from behind.

“One more time. I want to feel you milking my cock.”

Her gasp of pleasure was her only answer. Kneeling behind her, Jett’s strokes came faster, his hands on her hips held her steady for his thrusts.

Taryn’s pussy clenched around him. The rhythm he set up was fast and furious, and one she had no hope of denying, not that she wanted to. He pressed his fingers against her clit, circling it, then rubbed side-to-side.

“Yes, oh god, yes.” She balanced with her knees farther apart, and then her climax hit, throwing her headlong into a vortex of pleasure. Her fangs elongated, wanting to sink into his flesh and mark him. Instead, she bit into the pillow.

Jett followed her, his orgasm making a mini spasm go off in her. If they’d been mates he’d have been knotted inside her. A pang of loss hit her.

He draped over her back, their sweat cooling as they caught their breaths. “Did I hurt you, sweets?”

She tried for nonchalance, but with him still inside and over her she wasn’t sure if she could pull it off. “No, but you’re kinda heavy.” She wiggled for effect.

He chuckled softly. “You keep moving that fine ass, and you’ll get fucked again.”

“Hmm, I don’t think I’m up for that just yet,” she said then yawned for affect.

Jett kissed the side of her throat. “Stay still. I’ll be right back,” he said as he slid out of her.

I’m a wife and mother who is a retired stay at home mom of 2. I say retired because my youngest is 14 and my oldest is 20. When my baby went to school, reading saved my sanity, and then the same year he started school, I was diagnosed with Cancer, again reading saved my sanity. When I recovered and realized how quickly life could change, I made a bucket list. The number one thing was to live. Check. On top of that list was to become a published author. Check. Eight years later I have accomplished that goal and several others.

I live in the Midwest, but I”m a southern girl with only a slight twang who says y’all quite frequently, and am known to say “Bless Your Heart” A LOT. I write what I love to read, erotic romance. My books are definitely full of lots of story, but I leave nothing to the imagination in or out of the bedroom. My hope is that after readers have read one of my stories, they fall in love with the characters as much as I have.

Synopsis

The legacy of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continues in a spin-off series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author…

Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself…be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.

And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated–and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power…on the field, and off.

Michel’s Review

***A Seasoned Black Dagger Reader***

First of all I want to say I am a diehard Black Dagger Brotherhood fan. I began this series when my youngest child started school and I had time to read once again. That was over ten years ago and I have become addicted to this series. Throughout the ten years I have made the yearly pilgrimage to the Black Dagger book signings that started out with about 40 people in attendance to today’s 1500+ attendees. I have purchased all of the hardcover copies, e-book copies, and audio books. I strongly encouraged my husband to listen to the audio books. He has also become a die-hard BDB fan as well. The Black Dagger Brotherhood is my absolutely, undeniably, all time favorite book series. When a new book releases in the series, I check out from the world and devour the BDB world until the book is finished. Then I spend the year theorizing, contemplating, and counting the days until the next book releases. It was an amazing treat when J. R. Ward announced the upcoming Black Dagger Legacy series. I no longer had to wait an entire year for a date with the Brothers.

Blood Kiss by J. R. Ward is the first book in the new Black Dagger Legacy series. The Black Dagger Legacy is a spin-off of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. This new series is deeply involved in the BDB world but focuses on the new characters being introduced into the their world as well as revisiting the original Brothers in their daily lives.

I am giving this book 6 Stars based upon what it adds to the Black Dagger world and J.R. Ward’s new directions in character development.

The start of this new series is a brilliant move for the Black Dagger Brotherhood world. For the seasoned BDB fans it is the ultimate prize. They are once again getting a big dose of the beloved original brothers that captured our hearts. Readers are getting to experience slices of their daily lives. The BDB world comes to life and readers are once again getting to experience their passions, their unique comradery, and their snarky repertoire with one another. This book reaffirms that they are still the sh#tkicking bad@sses that get the job done.

As for a reader new to the Black Dagger world this book may not have the same impact as it does on the seasoned fans of the series. It can be read without having experienced the entire series. It can stand on it’s own merit. I would highly suggested reading the entire Black Dagger Brotherhood series first.

Blood Kiss features two couples and introduces some new characters. The readers are introduced to the new recruits vying to become Black Dagger warriors. Two of the recruits, Paradise and Craeg, begin a passionate love affair in their complicated world. They are fighting against the rules that dictate their world. There are the social barriers, the competitive training, and a very dangerous situation that is evolving within their world. Together they learn how to become warriors, friends, and lovers.

The readers are also drawn into Marissa and Butch’s wedded bliss. After being mated for several years they have reached a bump in the road. They are learning that no matter how much you love a person, the relationship still takes work. It takes compromise, unbiased understanding, communication, and unconditional love. J. R. did a beautiful job bringing this couple to a whole new level in their relationship.

The one thing that really impressed me the most was how J. R. gave Marissa a strong voice and really made her character come to life. The seasoned readers know that J. R. is stronger creating male characters and they dominate the books. In the previous books the majority of the story, the progression of the passionate relationships is from a strong male POV. The females are dynamic characters but they don’t radiate like their mates. Once their book is over their characters seem to fade into the background of the series where the Brothers still shine brightly. J. R. changed up her writing style with Blood Kiss. She gave her girls a strong voice and let their characters shine. She brought both Marissa and Paradise to life. They were strong female characters and had just as much presence as the male characters.

The reader also got to experience the magic that makes all of the Brothers and Lassiter (our favorite fallen angel )dear to our hearts. New readers will enjoy the snarky dialogue and interaction between the Brothers. The seasoned readers will embrace it wholeheartedly because of the established brotherhood and previous interactions throughout the series. Some of the passages will have a delightful impact that new readers won’t appreciate like the seasoned readers will. But the humor and engaging dialogue will keep everyone’s complete attention.

There is a subplot that engages both the new recruits and the original Brotherhood that unifies them as warriors. It may seem a bit rushed in the end but it was not the main focus for this book. The main focus is the passionate relationships evolving. It is also adding more layers to their world.

There are a few hints of what may come to pass in future books for both series. The BDB world is changing. There are old enemies gaining strength. There are new enemies within their race. The politics, the social cast, and traditions are evolving into something more progressive and possibly more deadly. Their world is not standing still. A war is coming. The home front is changing. The race is at risk of being exposed to the human world. The storm is brewing.

I have been involved with this series for ten years and am just as passionate about it today as I was when I read the first book. J. R. Ward is the queen of the romance world. Her Black Dagger Brotherhood appeals to both female and male audiences. She has proven once again that she can deliver the kind of book we all want to read. A passionate, highly adrenalized, fast paced book that keeps the reader involved long after the book is finished.

If you are new to J. R Ward or are a dedicated diehard BDB fan… Blood Kiss will keep you enthralled from the very first word to the very last.

Read Blood Kiss!   And…. Sign me up for a Lassiter Calandar!

Kelley’s Review

*** A Newbie to the Black Dagger World ***

This is my first BDB read and I found it quite enjoyable.  I was able to follow the storyline fairly easily even though I had not read any of the other books in the series.  J.R. Ward gives readers an excellent glossary in the very beginning that explains the language in this read and also gives a little background into certain characters.  I found this glossary extremely helpful so if you are a new reader like me it is a must read in order to keep from getting lost.

How could I enjoy this without having read the series?  That is the question that Michel posed to me several times.  As in all romance the love story is what caught my attention.  The story primarily revolves around Paradise and Craeg but you also get a glimpse into the relationship between Marissa and Butch.  While I don’t know the background of Butch and Melissa’s relationship I can appreciate how much they working on keeping the romance alive and what happens when couples do not communicate like they should.  Marissa took on a heavy burden that almost broke her.  Butch was there all along to support her but didn’t know she needed support because she kept things hidden.  We have all tried to do everything ourselves at least once in our lifetime and know that asking for help is tough but often makes life much more bearable.

I am also a glutton for a good forbidden romance and J.R. Ward delivers an excellent one in her character development of Paradise and Craeg.  Paradise knows that Craeg is off-limits but she just can’t seem to help herself.  I liked this role reversal where the Paradise was pursuing Craeg and he was doing everything in his power to keep honorable.  The dam only held for so long until things were so heated that their chemistry nearly caused them to burst into flames.  Then there was the walk of shame.  Was it one and done or were Paradise and Craeg going to try to have a relationship?  They were from completely different worlds and Paradise just knew her father would not approve so what was she to do?  This dynamic kept me turning the pages especially since I am not familiar with the BDB series and had no idea if J.R. Ward was writing an HEA here or not.  You will have to read Blood Kiss to find out what happens.

My final thoughts are that Blood Kiss an excellent stepping stone for new readers to get a taste of the BDB world.  It was enough for me that I purchased Dark Lover on Audible.  On its own it is a hot and steamy paranormal romance that is action packed and will keep you on your toes.  It was an excellent standalone read on its own that I think new readers to this series will enjoy.

HAVEN’T READ ANY OF JOEY’S VAMPIRE QUEEN SERIES? This is a great time to start. Joey did mention this is the 13th book, right? You have plenty to read! Since Keldwyn and Uthe’s story is pretty deeply entrenched in the culture of her vampires, she wouldn’t recommend reading it first. However, you don’t have to read ALL of the twelve preceding books to enjoy it; you just need more familiarity with the Vampire Queen’s world. According to her, Beloved Vampire (Book 4) is a standalone and a GREAT gateway book into the series with the sexy Lord Mason. Or you can read the first two in the series, Vampire Queen’s Servant and Mark of the Vampire Queen, because Lady Lyssa and Jacob started it all. Excerpts and blurbs for the whole series are here – http://www.storywitch.com/series-vqs. Each book comes with a recommendation on whether it can be read as a standalone or which books should be read as prequels for it.

She thanks you all for considering her vampires! Look below for a teaser from the book, as well as a link to read a full Chapter One excerpt.

excerpt 2

“What does subjugated to your will mean, Lord Keldwyn?” Uthe demanded. “I have a goal to accomplish. It does me no good to go to your world if that mission will be hampered by your demands.”

“I will not get in the way of that, never fear. Until your task in the Fae world is done, you will lie with me when I desire it.”

For a moment, Uthe thought he’d misheard him. The request was so banal, at odds with the complexity that he normally associated with Keldwyn’s motives. He blinked. “Your price for being my tour guide is that I be your whore?”

“I will not be paying for your services, my lord. Your payment to me, for my sponsorship, is your body.” Keldwyn swept his gaze over it, lingering on the columns of Uthe’s thighs, the way the cotton shirt stretched over his shoulders. Muscles tightened under his regard, and Uthe had to quell the desire to shift again. “You have compromised your chastity over the years to prove yourself vampire rather than Templar,” the Fae said. “And to protect your mission and secrets. You deemed them far more vital to your charge than your personal pride in keeping your vows.”

Uthe templed his fingers. He would treat this as a debate, like the many topics they’d dissected and argued over chess. That would calm the nerves jumping in his belly, as ridiculous as those experienced by a virgin bride on her wedding night.

“I wonder how many of your Templars preserved their ideals as faithfully as you have,” Keldwyn mused. “They had to do it only for a mortal life span, or until the Order ended. Whereas you have clung to them for centuries. Is it hubris, a fear of having no faith, or something else that makes you that stubborn?”

“To believe in nothing is no better than to believe in too much,” Uthe said between his teeth.

“A sentiment on coffee mugs and T-shirts. It is cliché and old, unoriginal.”

“Just as you putting a sexual price on your patronage is.”

“Careful,” Keldwyn said. Uthe felt that thrum of energy again as the Fae Lord’s gaze flashed with heat. “I will have your oath on bended knee that you offer yourself to me willingly. If you do not, your mission cannot proceed.”

Uthe met the onyx and moonstone gaze. “You weary me,” he said. “Whatever it is you hope to gain with your torment, Lord Keldwyn, I wish you well of it. If it is my body you desire, it is yours. It is merely future ashes and dust.”

Keldwyn straightened in the chair, uncrossing his ankles. His elegant hands dangled loosely on the end of either chair arm as he looked pointedly at the floor between his braced feet. It drew Uthe’s gaze to the columns of his thighs, the spread of his legs making it impossible not to note the impressive evidence of his virility under the molded fabric. He forced his gaze upward, but refused to look at Keldwyn’s face to see if he’d noticed him looking.

“Your oath,” Keldwyn repeated. “I am waiting, Lord Uthe. Unless you have decided your quest is not as important as your virtue.”

“Perhaps your revulsion for sharing your blood with a vampire is only matched by my distaste for sharing your bed.”

“If that was the case, you would not be aroused now.”

Uthe bared his fangs in a dangerous smile. He’d hung his sword on the back of the chair. Rising, he drew the blade from the scabbard in one swift movement, a whisper of menace. Let the bastard think he might try to skewer him, regardless of the consequences.

Keldwyn did not move, though Uthe had the satisfaction of seeing the sensual mouth thin, the eyes rivet on him in that cool, watchful way that suggested he might be close to inciting the Fae’s temper. He liked the idea too much. There was more at stake here than a pissing match, and he was channeling desire into aggression to deny his need. He ignored the faint tremor in his hands, the tightness in his chest as he teetered on the precipice of doing the unthinkable.

Planting the tip of the blade in a groove of the oak flooring, he dropped to one knee.

“Speak your oath, and I will repeat it in good faith, my lord,” he said, a growl. “You have my promise to adhere to it, unless it countermands God’s will.”

“I have noticed you still speak like a Templar, vampire. After all these decades.”

“In this modern world, promises are broken for convenience or comfort. I will not use casual words to speak a true oath.”

“Very well.” Keldwyn stood, moving the chair back and putting his hand on the pommel, curling his fingers over Uthe’s. His touch was cool, his palm smooth against Uthe’s knuckles. “Swear to be bound to me, offering your body willingly to my desires and demands, no reservations, until your quest is done. In God’s name.”

“I think God has little to do with this,” Uthe said, but he repeated it, his gaze lifting to meet the Fae’s. “I swear myself bound to you, the Fae Lord Keldwyn, liaison of the Unseelie and Seelie Courts, liaison for the Vampire Council. I will offer my body willingly to your desires and demands, until my quest is done.”

“With no reservations,” Keldwyn prompted. “You will not hold your mind apart from me, Lord Uthe. I will not consider the oath served if you lie like a board while I fuck you.” He slid a curled hand along Uthe’s cheek, so Uthe felt the rough edges of the ring resting above Keldwyn’s knuckle. “Say it.”

“With no reservations,” Uthe said, hearing the harsh rasp of his voice, a reaction to Keldwyn speaking his intentions so baldly. His hand was clenched on the pommel, and Keldwyn’s, still upon his, would feel it. “I swear.”

Keldwyn removed his hand, giving him a speculative look. “Access to our world must mean a great deal to you, Lord Uthe. I did not expect to win your agreement so easily.”

“Accomplishing my quest is all that matters. The rest does not.”

“Clever. You imply my demands do not matter, that they are as nothing to you. I am glad you are so unaffected. Because I require a demonstration of your oath, right now.”

Tracey’s Review

Leo Chapel’s life has gotten very strange very quickly. Odd visions, ending up in times and places that seem impossible, and some very scary and very sexy creatures have him wondering if he’s losing it. When truth becomes stranger than fiction, Leo will have to think on his feet if he wants to stay among the living.

When I heard that Ella Frank was writing a book about a hot vampire, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I mean, given her uber-steamy and very romantic Temptation series, and her way with words, it was a given that ALASDAIR would be sexy and action-packed, and unlike anything else she’d written. Well, this book is everything that I could have anticipated and more.

In ALASDAIR, Ella has nailed the mystery and sensuality so necessary to make a paranormal read a success. The characters are dark, equal parts cruelty and attraction, the epitome of the predator that we just can turn away from. When Alasdair makes Leo a part of his world, everyone involved is in for a surprise, because Leo is not your typical human. Endowed with abilities that tie him to Alasdair and the rest of the vampire family, Leo is as much a puzzle to them as they are a mystery to him.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a fresh take on the vampire mythology, revolving, as it does, around the attraction between Leo and Alasdair. And, Ella has left us with lots of unanswered questions as this story ends, so I am already impatiently awaiting the next book in the Masters Among Monsters series. 4.5 creepy, sexy, hot-as-heck stars for ALASDAIR. Keep these books coming, Ella; you’ve got a winner here.

With no more than a flash of thought, he was inside the man’s room and standing at the foot of a large bed.

Locks. Such a useless human defense.

He cocked his head to the side and examined the book splayed open on the man’s naked chest. It looked as though it had fallen there when he’d drifted off to sleep, his fingers still resting against the glossy cover.

Heroes, Gods, and Monsters of the Greek Myths.

Now that is an unlikely coincidence.

A sinister smile morphed Alasdair’s lips, and he touched the tip of his tongue to the fangs elongating from his upper gums. The familiar surge of adrenaline caused his skin to come alive with awareness as his body prepared itself to do what it had been created for.

Raising his hand, he flicked his wrist and the covers whisked back. The man beneath was no more aware of the action than a slight shift in the air as a low sigh escaped him and he stretched his body, turning his head on the pillow.

The sight that greeted Alasdair made the hours he’d spent tracking well worth the time. When the human took a breath, the knotted drawstring tie of his linen lounge pants caught his attention. Fuck, that made him want to indulge his carnal side first.

Maybe this was the root of his current obsession. In fact, that thought was followed by one truer to his perverse nature. How long would it take to have him clutching those covers from lust if I wanted it? And as Alasdair continued to observe the human, he realized just how much he wanted it.

The chest where the book was lying was covered in a light dusting of blond hair. It trailed a path along the center of the man’s sternum to his stomach, which looked as hard as his own. However, unlike his own abdomen, this man’s skin would be warm to the touch.

Perhaps he could take a moment or two and… No, he didn’t have the time, and that really was a shame. A meeting had been called this evening, and he was due at the Assembly Hall soon. The last thing he wanted to do was piss off the Ancients by being late.

So, with the speed and the stealth only his kind possessed, he was on the bed and stretched out above the man, and his mouth hovered over the ear closest to him.

He threw the book, which landed with a loud thump on the floor, and couldn’t stop himself from slipping one of his hands beneath those thin pants to curl his fingers around the flaccid cock he found inside. When a soft groan left the human, Alasdair used his other hand to capture his captive’s wrists like iron shackles and pin them above his head. Before the man had a chance to wake, he delved inside his head and projected an image of where this hunt would finally end.

Excerpt:

She didn’t know the exact moment when the air between them changed from simply hot and playful to something darker. Something so fierce and powerful, it made all of her nerve endings stand at full attention.

Jehan wanted her.

She’d have to be an idiot not to realize that.

She wanted him too.

And she was too smart to think for one second that he hadn’t picked up on her staggering awareness of him as a man. As a dangerously seductive Breed male who could have her carotid caught in his teeth just as swiftly as he could have her legs parted beneath the driving pound of his muscular body.

Sera swallowed hard, her breath and heart racing as she slowed to a stop before him.

She glanced down, to where she was tethered to his strong hands by the unraveled length of red silk.

Although she was covered where it counted, there wasn’t much of her dress left. Most of it lay on the floor at her feet; yards of scarlet pooled in the scant space between her body and Jehan’s.

She licked her lips as she struggled for words. She should tell him to go, but everything female in her yearned for him to stay. She was no trembling virgin, no stranger to sex. But never with a Breed male. And the electricity that crackled to life between Jehan and her was something she’d never felt before.

It was arresting.

Consuming.

Terrifying in its intensity.

Yet it wasn’t fear of him she felt when she held his piercing light blue eyes. It was fear of herself and of the way he made her feel. Fear of the things he made her want.

“Jehan, I…” She shook her head, unsure what she meant to say to him.

Leave?

Stay?

Forget the fact that neither one of them had come to this place willingly, nor intended to walk away from the archaic tradition with a blood-bonded mate?

But that’s not what this moment was about.

What she saw in Jehan’s amber-swamped gaze right now didn’t have anything to do with their romantic surroundings or the expectation and hopes of their families. The things she was feeling had nothing to do with any of that either.

It was desire, pure and simple.

Immediate and intense.

Her body throbbed with it, longing pounding furiously in her breast and stirring a molten heat in the center of her. She drew a shallow breath—then held it tight as Jehan reached out to caress her cheek. His warm fingers felt hard and strong against her face, but he stroked her with such tenderness, she couldn’t hold back the soft moan that spilled past her lips.

Michel’s Review

The world of the Midnight Breeds just keeps getting better! Lara Adrian has added another phenomenal story to this dynamic paranormal series.  It is so easy to get caught up in the Breed world.

Stroke of Midnight is a novella that introduces new characters into the new Breed world.  Jehan, Savage, and Trygg are from the Rome division of the Order.  They take the Order to another level that makes this series all the more intriguing.

This novella features Jehan and Seraphina. A reluctant prince and a defiant woman that were meant to be together because of their blood.  It doesn’t matter what the world decrees, destiny already made the two for one another. These two add another epic romance to the Breed family.

Lara Adrian creates characters that come to life.  The sexual tension, the snarky banter, and the emotional intimate moments touch the readers hearts. She adds an intense storyline that coincides with the turbulent Breed world and it adds another layer to this superb series.

I can’t wait to see where the Breed world is going to take Savage and Trygg.

Review + Giveaway: Scottish Werebear: An Unexpected Affair by Lorelei Moone- Scottish Werebears Series-Book 1

Scottish Werebear: An Unexpected Affair

Scottish Werebears Series – Book 1

By Lorelei Moone

faaf2-goodreads

Synopsis

Romance novelist, Clarice Adler, has lost the inspiration to write ever since dumping her cheating boyfriend. How do you dream up a plot of two people falling in love, when you’ve stopped believing in love yourself? But her deadline is looming, and her career hangs in the balance, so she decides to lock herself away on the secluded Scottish Isle of Skye to finish her manuscript. Upon meeting Derek McMillan there, it seems she’s found her new muse and the words start to flow out of her as if by magic. Clarice falls for him, hard, despite knowing nothing about the man, except that he’s unavailable.

Derek McMillan has been managing his farm and renting out a few holiday cottages on his own for years now. He deals with the occasional tourist for some extra money, but mostly keeps to himself. When he first lays eyes on the curvy beauty, Clarice, he immediately regrets accepting her booking. Lightning strikes, and as much as he tries to deny it, his inner bear knows that she’s his mate. But he’s a shifter, and she’s a human, and the two can’t ever mix, can they?

In this steamy paranormal romance novella, follow along as an impossible love blossoms between two people, who couldn’t be more different. One might say fate intended for them to meet, if you believe in that sort of thing, but they’re both set on fighting their attraction with everything they’ve got. They’re going to need another push to admit to themselves as well as each other what’s going on…

Please note that this is the first title in the Scottish Werebears Series. Each book features a different couple from first meeting to HEA, as well as an overarching external plot that won’t be fully resolved until the end of the series.

Excerpt

★★ Chapter One ★★
Throughout her flight into Inverness, Scotland, Clarice found herself repeatedly going over the printout she’d taken of her destination: Moss Cottage on the Isle of Skye. It promised unspoiled vistas, a homely atmosphere and most importantly of all: a quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
That’s what she needed most: to get away. Away from the distractions of life in London, away from the constant buzz of her phone, notifying her of incoming emails or tweets. Away from all reminders of the life she used to share with Alan before she caught him cheating on her.
Upon her arrival at the cottage, she would send a message to Lily, her best friend, who had also been the one to suggest the Isle of Skye as a destination to begin with, and that was it. Clarice had promised herself to switch everything off. From nine to five daily, she would be unplugged, allowing her to focus on the task at hand.
After stealing a glance out the window – they were still descending through thick cloud cover – she flipped the page over, reading the backside again. Local attractions include wildlife walks, beach walks, hill trails. Walks, basically, all you could do on the Isle of Skye according to this text was go for a quiet walk.
It is going to have electricity, though, won’t it? Clarice read the other side again and studied the accompanying pictures. There was a table lamp in one of the shots, which suggested that electricity was indeed going to be supplied… As long as her laptop had power, everything was going to be all right.
As the small plane landed bumpily on the runway, she felt a surge of excitement as well as nerves build within her chest. Soon, a mere three-hour drive away, she was going to arrive at her destination.
“Please remain seated until the fasten seatbelt sign is switched off,” said the captain’s almost robotic voice over the intercom.
Clarice smiled to herself. No way that’s going to happen. Half these people would be up, carry-on luggage and phone in hand, before the plane came to a halt.
She leaned over to get a better look out the window. The views throughout most of the flight had been obstructed by a thick layer of clouds, far below the altitude of the plane. Now, the outside world looked as one would expect Scotland to look in early autumn: grey and damp.
How does it matter, it’s not like I’ll leave the house, much. Clarice took a deep breath, holding it in an attempt to calm her nerves. She had never done anything like this. Leave it all behind for a few weeks of solitude.
But this time, it was necessary. Early attempts to figure out if there was any flexibility in the deadline for her latest book had only resulted in her editor breathing down her neck harder. Apparently anything short of a deadly illness wasn’t cause enough to postpone a release. A messy breakup and resulting existential crisis didn’t count. That was why Clarice had been forced to resort to drastic measures to finish the manuscript on time.
Finally, the fasten seatbelt signs switched off with the customary ding, and soon after, the doors of the plane opened. Clarice smiled a final goodbye to the quiet old man seated next to her. The flight was relatively short, as far as flights go, but she was still surprised that he hadn’t said a word throughout. He nodded, then joined the throng of impatient passengers heading for the door.
It was a small airport, meaning you didn’t get one of those fancy walkways leading from the plane straight to the door. Instead, all the passengers were let off via a mobile staircase, and then they walked along demarcated pathways painted on the concrete taxiway, towards the modest looking terminal building to collect their bags.
The bags arrived in a similarly low-tech manner: on trolleys in plain view of the waiting passengers. Clarice found her suitcase and started walking, aimlessly at first, until she spied the car rental sign.
Alan used to take care of all of these things during their holidays together, but now it was all up to her. How hard can it be?
As it turned out, picking up a pre-booked rental car wasn’t very difficult at all. However, Clarice was still battling residual nerves by the time she made it into the driver’s seat and started leafing through the various printouts of the route to the Isle of Skye. It looked easy enough, there weren’t very many roads to choose from. The maps on Clarice’s phone concurred.
A deep breath later, she turned the key. So far so good, now it was time for the home stretch.
***
As pretty as the drive towards the Isle of Skye was, it did nothing to prepare her for the beauty ahead. Stark black cliffs stood out against the dramatic clouds overhead. There wasn’t much vegetation, just grasses and mosses with the occasional small grouping of trees that had managed to battle the elements for survival.
Though the road snaked through the landscape up ahead, Clarice still felt like an explorer, discovering this mysterious land for the first time. At every bend, she instinctively slowed, both to cater for oncoming vehicles – which were few and far between – as well as to admire the views.
She passed through a few small towns on the way, but for the most part, the island seemed unspoiled and almost barren. The road narrowed more and more as she reluctantly drove on. Every map she’d printed out, even the satellite navigation on her phone confirmed she was on the right track, yet the road ahead looked too small to lead anywhere.
Finally, she made it to a small settlement that according to Google was a mere twenty minutes away from her destination. Village would be too big a word for the cluster of houses she found. Luckily one of the buildings housed a small daily needs shop. Clarice parked right outside, eager to stock up on some essentials so she wouldn’t have to leave the cottage at least for the next couple of days.
“Hello?” she called out through the open door.
No answer.
She stuck her head inside, looking around the dimly lit interior of the store. It looked like somebody’s living room, with a few racks of groceries, as well as firewood and some camping supplies stacked up inside.
“Excuse me?” she asked again.
Finally, an old man appeared through the door at the far end of the room.
“Ah, a customer!” He shot her a smile that seemed to wrinkle up every inch of his face all at once. “How can I help?”
“I just wanted to buy a few things,” Clarice explained, smiling nervously while eyeing the shelf of cookies nearer the wall.
“Aye, of course. Please take a look around. If you’re after anything specific, we may need to order it in.”
Clarice nodded and gathered up some packets of digestives. It was a bad habit, snacking while writing, especially when writing was your main job and you spend a lot of time doing it. With the deadline hanging over her head, she didn’t know how else to cope.
She rounded off her selection with some bread, eggs, and other daily essentials, then made her way towards the counter where the old man was waiting. He didn’t even have a till. Instead he listed up everything on a notepad and totaled it in his head.
“Where are you staying, if I may ask?” He handed her the torn off sheet of paper, with the total, £20.78 written in shaky pencil.
Clarice paused for a moment, wondering if it was wise to answer. What the hell, this place is so small, he would probably find out anyway. You’re not in London anymore!
“Moss Cottage. That’s just up the road I suppose?”
“Ah yes. The old McMillan farm. Lovely place, very quiet. Just-” He leaned forward, raising his hand gravely. “Take care of the bear.”
“Thanks. Umm, wait, what bear?” Clarice asked.
“Up in the hills around the farm. Keep your eyes open if you go wandering out by yourself. Especially in the evenings.”
Clarice scrutinized the old man’s face, looking for any sign that he was just pulling her leg, but his expression remained completely serious.
“I wasn’t aware that there were bears in Scotland?”
The old man let out a chuckle. “Well, according to the authorities, there aren’t any, but we’ve all seen him. A big fella too, could tear you in half, he could.” By the end of his sentence, again the old man’s expression turned deadly serious.
“But enough of that, you seem like a sensible lass, you’ll be careful. Enjoy your vacation.” He smiled again, his weathered skin folding into a million little creases.
“Uhh, thanks.”
“Bye now!”
Back at the car, Clarice tried to shake off her unease at the preceding conversation. A bear. Here? That’s ridiculous, right? As far as she knew, bears had been extinct in Britain for pretty much forever. Unless it was some kind of zoo escapee.
No, perhaps the old man had been enjoying his Scotch a bit too much. That must be it.

Judging a Book by it’s Cover:
Bare torso with tribal tattoo, pants dipping dangerously low and a sort of wonky pectoral muscle. The bear in the background is super cute. Brooding, moody background colors help make them both stand out. The synopsis sounds rather fun and entertaining.
Looking Deeper:
Third person POV. Poor Derek, he’s a bit clueless in what to do with himself in the beginning, but is such a softy sweetheart behind the gruff front he puts up. Clarice is a bit fanciful, but enjoyable. Both characters were absolutely wonderful. There really was not a lot in the way of secondary characters, allowing the main focus to remain on the lead couple. The chemistry, while progressing at a stradily aggressive rate, was something both denied until they just could not anymore, a refreshing change to other similar stories. Dialogue felt natural and appropriate. The plot was full and complete, for being a novella of this short length and it was written extremely well – so smooth and fluid. There really were not a lot of conflicts other than internal struggles, but they managed in efficient and mature ways. No predictability. The conclusion allows Derek and Clarice their HEA, but there’s a nice big opening for A DANGEROUS BUSINESS to pick it right up at the end. Although not a *huge* fan of paranormal, I honestly would love to read the next book in this saga to see if my suspicions are correct. Thank you, Ms. Moone, for the opportunity to read your work.

Welcome to Storm, Texas, where passion runs hot, desire runs deep,

and secrets have the power to destroy…

Nestled among rolling hills and painted with vibrant wildflowers, the bucolic town of Storm, Texas, seems like nothing short of perfection.

But there are secrets beneath the facade. Dark secrets. Powerful secrets. The kind that can destroy lives and tear families apart. The kind that can cut through a town like a tempest, leaving jealousy and destruction in its wake, along with shattered hopes and broken dreams. All it takes is one little thing to shatter that polish.

Reading like an on-going drama in the tradition of classic day and night-time soap operas like Dallas, Dynasty, and All My Children, Rising Storm is full of scandal, deceit, romance, passion, and secrets.

With 1001 Dark Nights as the “producer,” Julie Kenner and Dee Davis use a television model with each week building on the last to create a storyline that fulfills the promise of a drama-filled soap opera. Joining Kenner and Davis in the “writer’s room” is an incredible group of New York Times bestselling authors such as Lexi Blake, Elisabeth Naughton, Jennifer Probst, Larissa Ione, Rebecca Zanetti and Lisa Mondello who have brought their vision of Storm to life.

A serial soap opera containing eight episodes in season one, the season premiere of Rising Storm, TEMPEST RISING, debuts September 24th with each subsequent episode releasing consecutively this fall.

So get ready. The storm is coming.

Reviews for TEMPEST RISING:

“After reading Tempest Rising by Julie Kenner I can honestly say it is everything I loved about those shows from the 80’s and more; heart-stopping, twisted, engrossing, captivating, epic all describe this very first episode of Rising Storm. Even better I FELT like I was watching a television mini-series while reading it. Each time the “scene” changed, I held my breath wondering who was up next.”-Slick Reads, Guilty Pleasures Blog
