From New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Ward, comes a sexy, STANDALONE second-chance romance.

They called him Mack Daddy. No, seriously, his name was Mack. Short for Mackenzie. Thus, the nickname. Perfect, right?

So was he: perfect. The perfect physical male specimen.

At the private school where I taught, Mack Morrison was the only man around in a sea of women.

Everyone wanted a piece of the hot single father of the sweet little boy.

I was riddled with jealousy, because they didn’t know that—to me—he was much more.

They didn’t know about our past.

He’d chosen my school for his son on purpose, because Mack and I, we had unfinished business.

As my friend Lorelai so eloquently put it: “Unfinished business between two people who are clearly attracted to each other is like an eternal case of blue balls.” And I was suffering in pain from my case.

I was still intensely attracted to Mack. I tried to resist him, immersing myself further into a relationship with another man just to protect my heart.

Not to mention, getting involved with a parent was strictly against school rules. But seeing Mack day in and day out was breaking me down.

And soon I might be breaking all the rules.

Author’s note – Told in alternating points of view, Mack Daddy is a full-length standalone novel.

He's Back

5Star

Michel’s Review

Penelope Ward has another stunning new novel that is going to be another trendsetter.  Single daddy, adorable little boy, a complex past with the teacher, and the determination to win the love of his life’s heart back… Mack Daddy is steaming up the classroom.

Francesa (Frankie) O’ Hara never dreamed she would see MacKenzie Morrison again after he left Boston.  When he turns up in her first grade classroom with his six year old son,Jonah, she’s shocked and a bit bewildered.  She has an unfinished history with Mack that left her broken hearted.  Now he’s back wanting to renew their friendship and win her heart.

Mack has always loved Frankie.  They never had the opportunity to explore their feelings because he didn’t take control of his life at home.  He didn’t break up with his old girlfriend soon enough and she ended up pregnant.  He couldn’t turn his back on his child.  His father wouldn’t allow him to tarnish the Morrison name.  Seven years later, he’s taken control, he’s no longer with Jonah’s mother.  Fate has thrown him a bone when Jonah’s mother, Torrie, takes a job in Boston. He’s finally free to renew his friendship with Frankie.

Mack’s son has special circumstances that he feels like Frankie can help with.  Jonah suffers from anxiety and tends to withdraw within himself.  Mack wants the best for his son.  He’s a hands on father and volunteers regularly in Jonah’s class.

Frankie and Mack renew their friendship and realize their feelings never went away.  How do they take their relationship to the next level when Frankie is Jonah’s teacher and she’s involved in a committed relationship?  Mack’s ex, Torrie, is not happy with the situation developing between her son’s teacher and father.  She will do anything to protect her son, including using Mack’s father’s political power to destroy Frankie.

Mack and Frankie are going to have to fight for their love.  This time around they are mature adults and can handle anything Torrie and his father throw at them.

Once again Penelope Ward wrote a fantastic book with all the “feels”.  I could not put it down.  I am sure this is going to be another trendsetter like Stepbrother Dearest and Roomhate.

Synopsis

Discover the novel praised as a “nail-biting thriller” (Publishers Weekly), a “compelling web” (Kirkus Reviews), “tightly plotted character study” (RT Magazine), and a “dark, twisty tale of lurid secrets, lavish lifestyles, and devastating loss” (Lisa Gardner).

A woman who almost had it all…On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old in Manhattan could want: a one-bedroom apartment on the Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation…Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin…On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

Michel’s Review

Wow… I did not see this coming!  K. A. Tucker stepped up her game!  She’s known for her dynamic New Adult and Romantic Suspense novels that have put her on all the best sellers lists and become a favorite among the readers.  Her upcoming release He Will Be My Ruin is going to bring a new group of readers into her fold.

He Will Be My Ruin is not a romance.  It is a psychological thriller that takes the reader on a twisted journey and keeps them guessing throughout the book.  Each passage has the reader on the edge of their seat and surprised at what comes next.  When the final revelations are played out it’s another shock.  The story is unpredictable and has a very unique plot.  The delivery keeps the reader captivated and glued to the pages.  The characters are very well developed.  The progression of their actions and involvement is meticulously choreographed throughout the story.  The perfect sycronicity leads to an explosive ending.

I could easily envision this book being made into a movie.

He Will Be My Ruin by K. A. Tucker is beyond good… it is brilliant!  Buy this book!

Synopsis

The highly anticipated sequel to Positively Mine….
Picking up from the dramatic ending of Positively Mine, Yours and Mine continues the Freshman Forty series as we meet Laurel’s baby’s father, Danny Santoro, for the first time.
It’s been almost a year since he last saw her, that sultry morning she walked off the beach before dawn had even cracked the August sky. It seemed from her silence, she was out of his life forever.
But Laurel’s timing couldn’t be worse to tell him he’s a father. The last year hasn’t been easy. Danny’s own father was arrested for a DUI, his mother moved out, and Danny started sleeping with his brother’s old high school, drug-abusing girlfriend.
After Laurel shocks him with the news, she attempts to relinquish Danny of any parental responsibility leading to a heated custody battle. In an unorthodox arrangement, an eccentric judge orders Danny and Laurel to spend alternating nights with each other for the upcoming school year.
Told from Danny’s point of view, Yours and Mine explores the second chapter of a romance that never got off the ground, the challenges of young parenting, and the hope of rekindled love.

Michel’s Review

Yours And Mine, the highly anticipated sequel to Positively Mine by Christine Duval has released.  I highly recommend reading Positively Mine first.

Laurel hid her pregnancy from everyone during her freshman year of college until it got to a life or death situation.  Now she has to face the realities of her life.  She is a young mother trying to juggle her school schedule, her responsibilities to her child, and social life.  She’s doing the best she can but she’s not quite emotionally mature enough to handle it all.  She has a lot of growing up to do.  The first thing she has to do is tell Danny about the baby.

Danny was shocked to learn he was a father but he’s willing to accept the responsibility that go along with fatherhood.  He’s a few years older than Laurel and has been on his own for awhile.  He works full time and is attending college.  When Laurel falters on allowing him time with his daughter, he has to turn to the courts.  The courts take their unique circumstances into account and create unique visitation schedules.

At first the schedule is working but it’s Danny who is making all the concessions.  His relationship with Laurel is becoming closer but she is still a bit selfish.  She only sees what she wants to see and wants to have a carefree college girl life when Danny has their child. After a while Danny just can’t handle her immaturity and once again returns to the courts to make his custodial rights more conducive to his life, school schedule, and work schedule.  For the first time Laurel really has to face the realities of co parenting and compromising.

In the end Laurel will finally become a mature individual.  Once she learns what is important, life will change for all three of them.

Christine Duval did a wonderful job capturing the maturity level a someone Laurel’s age.  I have a daughter about the same age and a could see her being a lot like Laurel.  At that age their life experience level is just beginning.  They are just learning to be adults and make decisions for themselves.  In most cases they are not completely independent of their families, financially or emotionally. It’s not that they are selfish, they are just self involved.  They are in the learning process of making sound decisions for themselves.  Sometimes they can’t see the bigger picture in the decision making process.  Christine allowed Laurel to mature in a healthy, positive manner that was realistic.  Like most kids, she turned out okay and found out what matters most in life.

Yours And Mine by Christine Duval was a realistic and emotional conclusion in the Freshman Forty series.

Synopsis

It is four weeks into her freshman year of college, and Laurel’s first test was unexpected. Discovering she’s pregnant isn’t exactly what she had planned for her first semester, and while she intends to tell her emotionally-distant father, being away at school makes it all too easy to hide.

An imperfect heroine plagued by bad choices and isolated during what should be the best time of her life, readers are sure to identify with Laurel as she confronts teen pregnancy, in secret.

Michel’s Review

I am a little late to the game in reading Positively Mine by Christine Duval. The reason this book was brought to my attention is because I saw the blurb for Yours and Mine, the conclusion to this book that will be releasing soon.

I read Positively Mine in one sitting. I couldn’t put the book down. Not only did the author cover all the stages of pregnancy including the emotional aspects as well as the physical aspects, she added an emotional and realistic storyline. Being pregnant for the first time is scary and confusing. A woman doesn’t exactly know what to expect or how to react. The medical condition is easy to convey but the emotional side differs from woman to woman. But when you are an eighteen year old young woman not only starting your college career finding out your pregnant at the same time can be paralyzing. For Laurel it was devastating.

Laurel kept her pregnancy secret from her peers, her professors, her family, and the baby’s father. She struggled through her pregnancy as well as her academics. While her personal and academic lives are falling apart so is her family life. Her father has basically cut her out of his personal life and is remarrying. He’s starting a new family. There isn’t a place for her in his new life let alone a place for a baby.

Laurel has to figure everything out for herself. She hasn’t made the best choices but is determined to have her baby. Keeping a secret this big is destroying her.

When the truth finally comes out Laurel will have to face all the lies she’s told. She will finally be ready to become a grown up. She will be ready to become a mother.

Christine Duval did a fantastic job writing Laurel’s story. I believed every word and felt every emotion.

They say nothing compares to your first kiss,

But our first kiss was orchestrated for an audience.

Our second kiss…that one was REAL.

And he’d never get another piece.

A nip of his teeth, his hand at my waist…

And I was lost.

I forgot he was paying me to be his fake fiancée.

I forgot we weren’t REAL.

EXCERPT

Max stalked over to the barrier that divided the stands from the football field and jumped it. The fans went nuts as he brushed past them, some not even realizing it until he was down the aisle. The Jumbotron followed him.

“Good Lordy, what’s he doing?” Mimi asked, clutching at her chest.

“I don’t know,” I said rather weakly, taking the chance to study him the closer he came. He was beautiful, his shoulders impossibly broad. To add to the distraction, his helmet was in his hand and all that dark brown hair was flowing around his chiseled features as if he had a fan in his face. My Viking.

“He’s coming over here,” Mimi commented.

He was. But why?

I stopped breathing . . .right when he came to a halt in front of me and knelt down on one knee.

Eyes the color of a wild ocean gazed at me.

He took my left hand in his right one.

“Max,” I breathed, my heart fluttering.

He gazed up at me. “Sunny Blaine, will you marry me?”

The stadium went wild. In a daze, I looked up at the Jumbotron and felt like I was watching this happen to someone else. Camera phones flashed all around us.

My first clear thought was I’ll kill him.

Aloud, nothing came out but a faint wheeze. Clearly someone had stuffed a giant wad of cotton in my mouth. Clearly I needed something a lot stiffer to drink than this Diet Coke. Clearly my fake boyfriend was a freaking raving lunatic.

He sat his helmet on the ground next to my feet, reached inside it and pulled out a small black box.

No, no, no!

The box opened, and my stomach churned at the sight of the large round solitaire diamond ring that was nestled on the black silk. I blinked repeatedly to clear my vision.

With deft fingers, Max eased it out of the lining and slipped it on my left hand.

I stared down at it. Then back at him.

I was going to murder the hottest quarterback in the country.

Kiss her, Kiss her, the crowd chanted.

We were the focal point of the entire world.

Max stood and tugged me up with him until we were standing. He slid his hand around my neck and pulled his face to mine. The sky was blotted out as he kissed me.

But I hadn’t said yes!

I wouldn’t say yes.

Not to a fake engagement.

The applause of the stadium was deafening. And his kiss—it was deadly. Despite my rage, my body craved him. His lips were hot, so hot, and my tongue met his with a vengeance. We kissed hard, and I nipped at him, my teeth scraping across his lips. But the only one who’d end up bleeding in this scenario was me.

He eased back to take me in, and with a final look at my face he gave a thumbs-up sign to the entire stadium. They went nuts, chanting his name.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered in my ear, letting his hand trail down my arm as he stepped back from me. He walked away backward, eyes on me the entire time. The announcers for the game told everyone who might have missed it that Max Kent had just asked his girlfriend to marry him, and she’d said yes. More cheers came as they replayed him on his knee in front of me with a giant YES written across the top.

I plopped back down in my seat. Frozen.

“. . . did you see her face? Shocked . . .”

“. . . most romantic thing in football . . .”

“. . . luckiest girl in the world . . .”

My face went hot. Even my ears burned. I wanted to crawl under a seat.

God.

What a lie.

The half ended and our offense came out to the field, snapped the ball, and Max threw it straight to Tate who ran it in for another touchdown. My chest constricted and anger churned in my gut.

I didn’t care who won.

I hated football right now.

Most of all, I hated Max Kent, and I was going to make him pay.

Michel’s Review

As we all know there are thousands of romance novels based upon the theme of a fake engagement that leads to true love and the fairytale happily ever after.  Readers are suckers for these kind of romances.  With so many books on the market with this theme many could say it’s unoriginal and predictable.  That may be true but what makes each of these new books stand out and hook the reader completely is the delivery of the story, the characters, and the circumstances of their fake engagement.  The author has to dig deeper and become even more creative to make their book a success among the reading population.  The author has to make their characters larger than life as well as making them ordinary people with extraordinary circumstances so readers can easily relate to them.  Then the author has to add the meat of the story and make it very convincing.  The author also has to add the charm and magical qualities of true romance.  Ilsa Madden-Mills has found her magic formula and delivered an utterly charming and convincing romance that will leave the readers lining up for invitations to Max and Sunny’s wedding.  Fake Fiancee by Ilsa Madden Mills is a modern day fairytale romance.

Max Kent is the star quarterback at Leland.  It’s his senior year and he’s in the running for the Heisman Trophy.  Winning the Heisman Trophy is something his father, a former football star turned professional sports anchor, did not achieve in his illustrious football career.  Max has lived in his father’s shadow and also suffered from his father’s fame all his life. His talent on the field is undeniable but his volatile reputation could stand in the way of winning the trophy.  His toxic relationship with his former girlfriend and his fights with the second string quarterback were all over social media last year.  His senior year will be the defining factor in winning the trophy.  He has to lay low, play well, and keep out of the social media gossip.  When he meets his neighbor Sunny Blaine, she presents the perfect solution to his senior year.  She’s the ticket to winning the Heisman Trophy.  He is going to convince her to become his fake girlfriend until the football season is over.  It will benefit them both.  It’s also easy being around Sunny.  She’s a real girl who doesn’t let others dictate her life.  She’s smart, sassy, and fun to be around.  She’s truly someone he could fall in love with.

Sunny Blaine is dreading her senior year.  After a harsh breakup that ended without real closure, she’s dreading going to class.  Her ex boyfriend is in quite a few of her classes.  Their relationship never had real closure and left her wallowing in hurt from his deceptions. When Max offers her a solution to keeping her pride intact, she reluctantly agrees with his plan.

Max and Sunny had an instant connection the moment they met.  They developed a strong friendship that led to love.  With the end of the season approaching they will have to decide if they want to end their deceptions or grab onto something that is greater than winning any kind of award.  Fate put them in each other’s paths.  Fate had plans for them all along.  Who are they to defy fate.

I absolutely loved this book.  Fake Fiancee was heart-warming, charming, and entertaining.  Ilsa Madden Mills has created a fairytale romance!

Tracey’s Review

It was easy to get lost in this book. I mean, really, first page, and I was gone. I have always appreciated and enjoyed author Brenda Rothert. She’s the mistress of a hot hockey read, which I love (Ryke forever!), but has recently stepped out into more of what I’d call romantic intrigue or suspense, and she is absolutely rocking it. First, there was HIS, which I picked up and could not put down. It was a great read, and I was excited to see that COME CLOSER would be a little bit different, as well. Brenda has written a book that I tore through because I couldn’t wait to see what the heck would happen next, and that I couldn’t wait to tell other readers about.

One of my favorite things about this book is the characters that Brenda has written. Doctor Daniel Delgado is a flawed man, but he’s self-aware and stronger because of it. His humanity and humility shine through in everything that he does, and make him the perfect doctor for the patients at Hawthorne Hill, including Allison Cole. His ability to meet Allison exactly where she is, and to gain her trust, sets the stage for this different, engaging, action-packed, intriguing gem of a book that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat until the very last.

COME CLOSER is full of twists and turns, and best read with no pre-conceived notions or clues, so I don’t want to give anything away, but believe me when I say that you want to read this book. It’s an easy 4.75 stars for me, and one that I happily recommend. You need it on your TBR right now; it’s that good. Enjoy.

She was my nightmare. Every time I closed my eyes, I watched her fall into that inferno. Over and over, I failed to save her.

I hadn’t been able to reach her, and the guilt only burned hotter over time. Four years later, I was the unreachable one.

Heroes aren’t always saints. Sometimes, we’re nothing more than jaded sinners driven by sleepless nights and hearts full of darkness.

And then I met her. She was a dreamer who managed to soothe my scars and heal my wounds.

But, as the flames closed in around us, I feared I wasn’t the right man to save her. That is until I realized she was the one woman I’d burn the world down to protect.

Excerpt

Chapter One

Jude

“Tomorrow, it’s on me,” I said, standing up off the barstool.

Behind the bar, Carmen waggled her eyebrows, seductively calling out, “Funny, I could be on you tonight if you stayed awhile longer.”

I laughed at her innuendo and tossed her a wink. “I gotta get home, babe. Seven a.m. comes way too early.”

“Well, offer’s on the table,” she purred.

It always was with her. And, if I wasn’t careful, I’d eventually take her up on it.

Not that sleeping with Carmen wouldn’t have been good. But, when you find a cheap bar only five minutes from your house, you don’t fuck that up by dipping your cock into the bartender.

“Later, Carmen,” I called, pushing the door open and heading to my car.

I wasn’t out of the parking lot before I heard, “Officer Levitt? We’ve got an alarm going off in Park Hill. You mind taking a look on your way home?”

Banging my head back against the headrest, I groaned to myself. Park Hill was about as “on my way home” as swinging past California on the way to Maine.

Switching my radio to my other hand, I complained, “I’m off the clock, Jocelyn.” I had been for several hours, even if I hadn’t made it home yet.

She laughed. “I’m sorry, but you’re the only one remotely close. I had to send two cars out to the Laslows’ to break up another argument between Cam and his old man.”

“They at it again?” I asked.

“Apparently, Cam told Lindsey he didn’t want the baby. Lindsey told his dad. Old Man Laslow lost his mind.”

I chuckled, putting my blinker on and then doing a U-turn in the middle of the empty road. “Christ. I bet he did. I know the man’s seventy-five, but I sure as hell wouldn’t want to go toe-to-toe with him.”

“I’m with you on that. So…you gonna head out to Park Hill?” she asked in a sugary-sweet tone.

I grumbled deep in my chest. “You’re gonna owe me some of that banana bread for this. I missed it the other day when you brought it up to the station.”

“I don’t owe you anything.” She giggled. “However, as a personal thank-you from the state of Illinois, Park County, and the owners of Park Hill, I’ll bring you in a loaf on Friday. Deal?”

“Deal. I’m en route now.”

“Stay safe, and radio in with your report.”

“Yes, ma’am,” I replied, knowing exactly how much thirty-year-old Jocelyn loved being called ma’am by a twenty-five-year-old man.

“Don’t you—”

“Gotta go.” I turned the volume down to mute her, grinning to myself as I flipped my lights and siren on.

I’d been a cop for two years. And, in that time, I’d been out to the privately owned Park Hill estate at least a dozen times. It wasn’t unusual for the alarm on the mansion to get triggered. It never amounted to anything. The expansive estate was on the very edge of the county, and trouble didn’t usually travel that far out. More often than not, a bird at a window or a bumbling new member of the grounds crew would accidentally trip the alarm. Truth was, no one actually lived in Park Hill. The owners visited sporadically. But, for the majority of the time, it remained empty.

Some minutes later, I cut my siren as I pulled up to the entrance. The cold air assaulted me as I stepped out of my patrol car with my flashlight in hand and aimed at the keypad on the massive security gate that blocked the driveway off. That damn thing alone had to have cost more than I’d make in a lifetime. Forget about the house inside.

The smell of wood burning in a fireplace wafted through the night air. I guessed someone was home for a visit.

I typed in the emergency code on the gate panel and then climbed back in my car and made my way down the tree-lined driveway. I’d spent the day on patrol, and, with the exception of some minor vandalism across town, it had been a slow one.

Though, in the blink of an eye, that would change.

Along with my entire life.

“Oh fuck,” I breathed as the main house came into view on the top of the hill.

After throwing my car in park, I jumped on the radio at my shoulder. I could barely get the words out as I slung my door open and took off at a dead sprint.

“This is Officer Levitt! I need fire support at Park Hill immediately!”

And then I froze as a wave of adrenaline crashed into me like a tsunami.

An inferno roared in the night sky, but it was the small silhouette of a woman perched outside a third-floor window, smoke pouring out all around her, that knocked the breath out of me. My heart stopped, but my feet continued to pound against the pavement.

Jocelyn’s voice caught me. “What’s going on?”

“I need medical too!” I barked as I got closer. “The whole damn place is in flames and there’s a woman trapped!”

The woman’s long, black hair blew out behind her like a battered flag whipping in a storm. I couldn’t make out her face or her skin color or even guess at her age for the black soot covering her, but her fear was unmistakable.

And unforgettable.

“Hang on!” I yelled up to her.

“Oh my God!” she screamed before it turned into a fit of coughing. “Help me!”

“Hang on! Don’t let go!”

Frantically, I searched the perimeter for a way in, but it wasn’t only her house that was on fire. Flames were encompassing her. The yard and all the surrounding flowerbeds. Top to bottom. The first and second floors were completely engulfed, and if the sound of shattering windows was any indication, it was quickly making its way up to the third floor—to her.

“No! Don’t leave me!” she screamed, panic thick in her garbled voice, as I started around the side of the house.

A wall of heat stopped me in my tracks. Throwing an arm up, I did my best to block my face while scanning the building for any possible entry—or, in her case, exit.

But there wasn’t a surface of that house that wasn’t ablaze.

Except the roof.

Son of a bitch.

I spoke into the radio. “I need an ETA on fire.”

Jocelyn replied, “They’re on their way. Five minutes out.”

I didn’t have one minute, much less five.

Fuck.

My pulse quickened, sending blood thundering in my ears. I was a cop. I’d trained for chaos. I should have been able to come up with a solution for a situation like this, but they didn’t teach you how to conquer the impossible at the Academy.

And, as I took inventory of the flames dancing beneath her, I knew that was exactly what I was up against.

My gut wrenched as I helplessly sped back around the house. She appeared almost childlike, hovering barefoot on that narrow brick ledge, but her long-sleeve top and her loose-fitting pants clung to the body of a woman.

Jesus Christ! Where was that fucking fire truck?

“Is anyone else in the house?” I yelled up to her.

Not that I could have helped them, either. Short of running into a burning building, on what would surely be a suicide mission, there was not one thing I could do. And didn’t that little reality feel like a wrecking ball to the chest.

“No!” she cried, a loud sob lodging in her throat. It turned into more coughing, her body shaking violently with every heave.

I fisted my hands at my sides as my anxiety spiraled higher.

“Please. Do something!” she begged.

I ground my teeth together and once again glanced around as if a water hose and a ladder were going to suddenly appear out of nowhere. “Hang tight, okay? Fire trucks are on their way.”

“I can’t hold on much longer!” she cried.

“Yes, you can,” I demanded.

“I…I think I need to jump,” she coughed out.

I assessed the massive fire below her. I’d never be able to reach her before it swallowed her. But there was no way I’d be able to stand by and watch her burn.

No. If she jumped off that ledge, she was going to get us both killed.

“Don’t you dare,” I barked. “Don’t even think about it. Two minutes. They’ll be here.”

“I…I can’t.”

“Two minutes,” I repeated. “Hold—”

Suddenly, a window to her left exploded, shooting glass and flames in all directions.

I covered my face as she screamed in a paralyzing mixture of fear and agony. It cut me so deep that I knew I’d bear the scars for the rest of my life, and that had nothing to do with the glass and everything to do with the heavy weight of my failure already lingering in the smoke-filled air.

When I opened my eyes again, I caught a glimpse of orange flickering in the window behind her. Panic built in my chest.

“You need to move!” I yelled.

She shook her head and continued to cough and cry.

But it wasn’t an option. I couldn’t help her. Though I damn sure refused to watch her die.

“Please. Just listen to me.” I swallowed hard. “You can’t stay there.” I looked to the roof.

Sending her higher seemed wrong and went against everything I’d learned in my limited fire training. But fuck, my options were having her jump into a conflagration or scale up the side of a building in hopes of buying us the precious minutes needed for the fire department to arrive.

Drawing in a smoke-filled breath, I made a decision that would haunt me for the rest of my life. “You need to climb up to the roof.”

“I can’t!” she shrieked.

My stomach twisted, but I gentled my voice. “Look, I know you’re scared. But I’m right here. I’ll help guide you up, but, sweetheart, it’s bearing down on you. You gotta move, and I mean now.”

She choked on a mouthful of smoke as she attempted to look over her shoulder.

“You’re going to be fine. I swear to you,” I lied. “But you have to move.”

“I’m not going to make it!” She had to have yelled it in order for me to hear her, but I felt her defeat slither over my skin like a whispered goodbye.

I took a long step forward, too focused on her to feel the heat singeing my skin. “Yes, you are!” I declared. “Move your ass up to the roof and we’ll both be out of here in time for breakfast.”

Her gaze landed on mine, tears forging paths down her soot-covered cheeks, her disbelief obvious even from yards away. “Are you sure?”

It was a ridiculous question. It wasn’t like I could make any guarantees. It was fire, for God’s sake. But that didn’t stop me from covering my heart with my palm and vowing, “I swear on my life you’re going to make it through this.”

Her hesitation was evident, but with one last sob, she inched her small body farther out onto the narrow ledge, reaching the tips of her shaking fingers out for the windowsill above her.

“Good girl,” I praised, a fraction of relief washing over me.

And then I sucked in a sharp breath as one of her shaking legs slipped out from under her.

“No!” I yelled.

On instinct, I rushed toward the flames, my arms stretched out in the air as though I could catch her.

A scalding heat blistered my face and forced me to stop, but the real pain was in my chest. I watched in horror for what felt like a lifetime as she fought to right herself, her dainty arms flailing like a wounded butterfly frantically trying to catch the wind.

But there was none to be found.

My heart lurched into my throat, and my breath seized in my lungs.

And then a deep, guttural sound tore through me, shredding me from the inside out, as I watched her fall.

I woke up in a cold sweat. It wasn’t exactly something new. I’d been dreaming of Butterfly for over four years. She always flew directly into the flames, screaming as I stood helpless to save her.

Swinging my legs over the side of the bed, I cradled my head in my hands and tried to pretend I was okay. That wasn’t exactly something new, either. I could still feel the heat on the back of my neck. My lungs were still thick with smoke. The pressure in my chest never left me.

The distance while I was living in LA had helped. But, in the week since I’d been back in Illinois, I’d woken up every morning at that blazing house. I didn’t even have to be asleep for the memories to assault me.

I should have gone back to sleep. It was my first day at my new job, and the last thing I needed was to show up haggard and sleep-deprived. But, as I’d learned over the years, another fiery butterfly awaited me on the other side of REM. No way I was volunteering for that.

I pushed myself off the bed and tugged a T-shirt on, preparing to head down to the hotel gym with hopes that I could outrun the mental fog that had been hovering over me since I’d returned. There was a reason I’d thrown all of my shit in my car and driven as far as I could all those years ago.

Yet, somehow, I’d come full circle.

But I’d come back a different man.

At least that’s what I’d told myself as the deafening roar of doubt had overwhelmed me the moment I’d driven across the state line.

Regardless, it had been time to go home.

I’d been gone too long.

Or, as I’d decided as I’d passed the exit to Park County, not nearly long enough.

What a great start for a new hot alpha male series!  Sizzling hot bodyguards ready to protect your life at all cost and steal your heart at the same time.  The perfect type of series that will have the readers swooning.  The Guardian Protection Agency was first introduced in The Retrieval Duet.  The readers got an inclination of how highly specialized and trained these professional bodyguards are.  Although they are a national agency they make their home base in Chicago.

Jude and Rhion were bound together by a tragic incident in their past. Although they both survived, the incident left life long scars and extra weight in their baggage of life.  Jude lost his career and Rhion walked away severely scarred.  Years later they are reunited when Jude goes to work for the Guardian Protection Agency.  Rhion lives one floor above the agency and is also one of their top clients.

At age twenty two Rhion inherited a vast fortune when her father passed away.  Her left his entire fortune to her and excluded her younger brother and many ex-wives out of the will.  After his passing, Rhion’s life changed.  Not only did she lose her father, she also became a target.  Someone almost killed her.  Someone has been terrorizing her for years. She sincerely believes it’s her crazy younger brother.  Her father’s ex-wife is also stalking her for cash handouts. She quickly realized she needed to hand over the control of her money.  She had to go into hiding from her family.  She has become a recluse.  Her only salvation is her friends at Guardian Protection and her career as a romance novelist.

After a bitter divorce and the closure of the previous agency he worked for, Jude has left L.A. to work for the Guardian Protection Agency.  He’s returning home to face the horrific memories of night that almost ruined his life.  When he comes face to face with the woman from the horrific night, his new life is going to change.  He always blamed himself for her injuries.  She was a beautiful butterfly that had her wings clipped by him.

Jude and Rhion have both suffered since that fated night.  For Rhion, Jude was her knight in shining armor.  He was the man who saved her life.  He is the man she dreams about every night.  For Jude, he’s been plagued with the nightmares from that fateful night.  His mistakes ruined this woman’s life.  Now they have to face one another daily.

Fate has put Jude and Rhion in each’s others paths once again.  She has given them the gift of redemption, forgiveness, and hope.  They are two souls that were meant to be together.  Jude will do anything to make Rhion happy.

Rhino’s past is still a threat.  She is a top client for The Guardian Agency.  Jude has now become her personal bodyguard.  He will have to separate his personal and professional lives.  The one thing both have in common is keeping Rhion safe and happy.

Aly Martinez has once again written a sizzling hot romance laced with danger and suspense.  I loved the relationship between Jude and Rhion.  I can’t wait to see what comes next for The Guardian Protection Agency.

PoppyLove and war. Two words that should have little association, but to me the two go hand in hand. Both are a tragedy. They rip you open and spit you out. The war killed my husband, Connor, shattered my will to live, and took my best friend. Brandon may not have physically died in that war, but his soul did. And now we’re left to pick up the wreckage. Expected to move on when all that is left is the ruins of a life we once had.

Brandon

War. It took everything from me, even myself. When you’re only able to exist, death seems like a blessing. Pain…a welcome distraction. I ran from everything associated with my past, and then she found me, fighting, drowning myself in whisky, trying to forget. She reminds me of Connor, of what I’ve lost—what we’ve lost. In the midst of destruction, she’s a salvation I don’t deserve.

I shouldn’t love him.

I shouldn’t love her.

Love is a war we never should have fought.

Michel’s Review

To be quite honest, I don’t know how to review this book. It was not a matter of liking or disliking the book. There was not an issue with the writing or delivery of the story. The writing was beyond excellent considering the subject matter. The subject matter had emotional triggers that affected me personally. When I finished this book it was with a very heavy heart.

War Poppy is not the typical romance. The story portrays real issues that war veterans and their families deal with after they have returned home. War Poppy is not an easy book to read. It does not have a HEA. In fact it is heartbreaking and leaves the reader with a very heavy feeling of despair. I believe that was the clear intentions of authors Stevie J. Cole and LP Lovell, writing as Nicole Lynn, had when writing this book. They intended for this book to leave an impact. They wanted this book to be thought provoking and raise awareness of the very real issues veterans and their families face dealing with PTSD. It is not light reading material. It is a fictional story of three people tied together through life and war.

Most readers pick up a book to escape the realities of the real world. They are looking for engaging entertainment. As a fair warning, War Poppy may have triggers that some readers may not be able to deal with. There are graphic war scenes, severe depression, extreme psychological issues resulting from PTSD, substance abuse, and self-destruction. These issues are handled with complete honesty and compassion for those who are living with these very debilitating problems.

Poppy, Connor, and Brandon grew up together. They became family. Brandon was Poppy’s first crush and first love. He was also Connor’s best friend. He was the protector of their family unit. When Connor chose to enlist, Brandon enlisted right along with him. When Connor died in war, Brandon may as well have died. His body is still alive but his soul is dying a slow death. Rather than facing Poppy after Connor’s death, he went AWOL and disappeared. Dying is easy, trying to live with the aftermath of war is excruciating.

Poppy was devastated when her husband was killed. Her heart was shattered. What made it even more devastating was losing Brandon as well. Brandon disappeared and she has made it her mission to find him. She senses his despair and wants to help him heal. He is as much a part of her as her husband Connor was. When she finally finds Brandon, he’s not the man she has known all her life. He’s lost in a dark world of haunting pain.

Poppy is at a loss on how to help Brandon. Her mixed feelings of friendship and love trigger her guilt about her husband’s death. Deep down she knows Connor would want them both to move on in life. She’s taking the steps to overcome her grief the only way she knows how. She’s doing everything in her power to help Brandon gain the courage to take his own steps towards healing. She is giving him her unconditional love with every ounce of her heart. Sometimes love is not enough.

War Poppy was written with compassion and brutal honesty. The authors did a fantastic job conveying this story. The bonds of love are never questionable. They are absolute. It’s dealing with all the other things haunting their souls that convolute their love for one another. Sometimes even the purest love and good intentions are not enough to keep the demons at bay.

As I finished this book, I couldn’t breathe. I was devastated. I was aching right along with the characters. The harsh truth of their lives is something that happens on a daily basis in real life. Sadly their story is not uncommon. That in itself is the true tragedy!

Read an excerpt from COLD SECRETS:

She walked toward him and he forced himself not to move. She was only a few inches shorter than he was which was a change from the women he usually dated. Her hands rested on his chest as she eased up to kiss him. Her mouth was soft and sweet, and tasted like bourbon.

He wanted to unwrap that shirt from her body and drag her off to bed. But it didn’t matter how long it had been, this was a really bad idea.

As she was about to pull away, he cupped her face and took the kiss deeper, feeling the surprise, followed by the searing heat of her response. Her breathing hitched as her tongue met his. He fitted her more closely against him, his calloused fingers rough against the slippery satin of her blouse. Her arms wound around his neck and her hands sank into the hair at his nape. She was hot—body, face, mouth. His body begged him not to pull away, not to stop, but he did it anyway, and stared down into her pretty eyes.

“What was that for?” he asked gruffly.

“Curiosity.” Her lips were reddened from their kiss. Her honey skin held a flush of scarlet. “I wanted to see if you tasted as good as you looked.”

His throat grew tight. “What’s the verdict?”

She pulled away and walked over to where she’d dumped her laptop and coat. Picked them up.

He made himself stand very still as she walked away. Made himself accept that the kiss had been enough.

She opened the door and looked over her shoulder. “Better.”

Then she closed the door, severing the connection. And he knew a kiss was never going to be enough.

Tracey’s Review

FBI Agent Ashley Chen has gone to very great lengths to create the life that she’s living. She wants nothing more than to fight the good fight and put the bad guys away for a very long time. The Bureau is Lucas Randall’s life, and he’s one of the best at what he does. When a chillingly dangerous case brings the two agents together, neither could have expected what lay in store.

COLD SECRETS is the seventh book in the Cold Justice series by author Toni Anderson, and, while it is only the second book that I’ve read in the series, I am well and truly hooked. Toni has a knack for creating tightly-written plots that are realistic, timely, and absolute page-turners.

The action in COLD SECRETS is immediate, and does not let up. I was so completely engaged that I didn’t want to put this book down. It’s always a pleasure to read about a powerful woman that takes no prisoners. Ashley Chen is a kick-butt lady, and, despite all that she could lose if her secrets are uncovered, she’s all in, determined to take down the crime family leaving a trail of bodies and loss in their wake. When she and Lucas Randall come together to work the case, each bringing their own expertise, it isn’t long before they have much more invested than just solving the crime.

COLD SECRETS is an easy 4.5 stars for me, and it’s a guarantee that I will read Toni’s books again and again. If you’re a fan of romantic suspense, and like your books with plenty of edge, intrigue, and passion, these books should be on your TBR.

Excerpt

Linc rang Em at the same time he had the day before. Every part of him ached from a morning of gruelling training, but in a good way. The kind of way that made him grateful for his fitness, that made him feel alive. And pumped.

Pumped to make this phone call. Pumped to hear Em say yes.

“Hi, Em Newman speaking.”

She had one of those teacher’s voices. Firm but kind, with just enough fuck-with-me-and-I’ll-send-you-to-the-principal edge to keep a guy in line. That kind of voice that had never really worked on him when he’d been in high school, but then he’d never had a teacher as sexy as Em Newman, either.

He might have turned up more often if he had.

“I think I’ve been going about this all the wrong way,” he said, picturing her sitting at her desk, her mouth pressing close to the phone receiver so she wasn’t overheard.

“I’ve been going for traditional names. But it’s not Ermintrude. Or Emma. Or Emily or Emmeline. So I’m thinking now your parents might be hippies, and it’s actually something like Ember. Or Emerald.”

There was a long pause then a deep sigh. “Why do you care?”

“I want to be able to call you by your real name.”

“Well, the kids call me Miss Newman.”

Linc chuckled. “Oh. Don’t tempt me.”

Another heavy sigh. “Are you just going to ring me every lunch hour?”

“Sure. If I have to.”

“Don’t you have…push-ups to do? Or something? Balls to kick. Tries to score?”

He grinned. “Training finishes at twelve, and in case you haven’t noticed, I’m trying to score right now.”

“Linc…” He’d have to have been deaf not to hear the exasperation in her voice. “I have papers to mark.”

“You are hell on a man’s ego, Miss Newman.” He loved the way “Miss” rolled off his tongue, and a dozen dirty thoughts about naughty teachers with crazy curls bending over to help a student with a problem, their shirts gaping to reveal pretty bras flitted through his head with a predictable effect on his dick.

Who knew teachers could be such a fucking turn-on?

Certainly not a guy who’d spent a good portion of his life avoiding them at all costs.

She snorted. “I have a feeling your ego couldn’t be brought down with an elephant gun.”

He laughed, not even bothering to try and dissuade her from the accuracy of her statement. “The Nerd Chicks are in town on Friday night.”

She didn’t say anything for a beat or two. “You know who the Nerd Chicks are?”

“I do now.”

Linc had spent a long time online last night trying to come up with something that’d blow Em’s mind. He’d finally found An Evening with the Nerd Chicks. Apparently they were three women with science backgrounds who ran a popular YouTube channel discussing all things science and had taken their show on the road.

“We should go together.”

There was another pause, but he thought he could hear her breath hitch. “Top marks for trying, Linc. But it’s sold out. It sold out in about half an hour.”

“Lucky for you I have two V.I.P. tickets.”

He definitely heard her breath this time. Hissing slowly out this time in a long exhale. “Thank you but…no.”

“No? Did I mention you get to meet them afterwards?”

A soft noise that sort of sounded like a whimper or maybe even a low growl caressed his eardrum. “I said no.”

But it was the most unconvincing no Linc had ever heard. He could practically feel her conflict. “Come on, Miss Newman,” he pressed. “Why deprive yourself?”

“Because, Linc,” she muttered, her voice terse, “afterwards I’ll probably fuck you in your ridiculously sexy car.”

Linc’s pulse spiked at her direct prediction. Even if she had sounded utterly depressed over it. He laughed. “And that’s a bad thing?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. What if I promise to not let you fuck me in my car? Or anywhere else?”

It wasn’t going to win him the bet—but he really didn’t give a fuck anymore. Linc just really wanted to take her to the show. Because she obviously wanted to go.

She snorted. “I can be very persuasive.”

 4.5 StarTracey’s Review

If a book is published under the Entangled Brazen banner, I can always be sure that it’s going to be quick, fun, hot read that I can’t put down. And, if it’s by author Amy Andrews, these things are guaranteed in spades.

PLAYING THE PLAYER is the third book in Amy’s Sydney Smoke Rugby series, and is the kind of laugh-out-loud read that I love. Linc Quinn is a stereotypical baller, in love with his game, his friends, and women. Ah, yes, the women…After plenty of disappointment and some self-actualization, Em Newman has sworn off men, but there’s just something about Linc that she can’t say no to. I mean, months of abstinence can make even the strongest woman waver, and Linc, with his wit, his smile, and his downright sexiness, well, what woman wouldn’t find it hard to resist?

A book doesn’t have to have a HEA for me to enjoy it, but sometimes it’s really nice to just settle in with a book that you know is not going to disappoint. Humor, sexiness, and sass are always winners for me, and Amy has done a fabulous job of making sure that this series has all of these things and more. And, heck, it’s sports romance, so what’s not to love?

PLAYING THE PLAYER is an easy 4.5-stars for me, and I happily recommend it as a much-needed addition to combat the winter blahs. Add this book, and the rest of the Sydney Smoke books to your TBR. You’re in for a treat.

Synopsis

A Cry For Help

It only takes one phone call and Navy SEAL Drake Avery is rushing back to Tennessee in the middle of the night. His sisters are in danger and he will do whatever it takes to protect them.

A New Twist

Now is not the time for a relationship, but damned if Drake doesn’t cross paths with a smokin’ hot kindergarten teacher named Karen Eastman. Miss Eastman has Drake thinking naughty thoughts when he needs to have his head in the game. He never thought he’d be hot for teacher.

Demons from the Past

Part of the hell of going home is that you know everyone, and they know you. Just when you think you can trust someone, they can turn on a dime. Old and new enemies are thrilled to discover Drake has a beautiful new weakness: Karen. But messing with the women in his life, is a mistake. You mess with the bull, you get the horns.

EXCERPT

“Now, I want you to tell me all about yourself. Starting with how you met my father, what kind of relationship you have with the sheriff, and how you ended up in this car scaring the piss out of my sister’s baby girl.”

“I’m not scaring no baby.”

Drake held onto his gun with his left hand and with his right, he reached over the front seat and wrapped his big hand around the man’s scrawny neck. “You wanna re-think your answer?”

The man wheezed. Both of Fred’s hands came up to try and yank Drake’s iron finger’s away from his throat. It was no use. Finally, he gave up, his eyes bulging.

“Nod if you’re going to answer my questions.”

The man gave the best nod he could under the circumstances. Drake dropped him back into the front seat of his car.

“Prison. I knew your old man from prison. We done time together a couple of years ago.”

“He got ahold of you awfully fast considering he just got out three days ago.”

“Huey. Huey called us. He told us ole Norville was getting sprung. He rounded us up.” Great, it was a family affair. His dad’s cousin Huey was in on things. He’d always hated that fucker.

“Who’s us?”

“Us.”

Drake punched him in the back of the head.

The man let out a loud yell. “Are you trying to kill me?” he asked as he tenderly touched the spot where Drake’s fist had landed.

“That was a love tap. Give me names.”

“I don’t know everybody.”

The guy was a moron, Drake wanted to hit him again just to see if it would jumpstart his brain. “Give me the names you do know,” he gritted out.

“There’s Al, he did time for trying to steal a car. But it was an unmarked police car a block away from a police precinct. He’s none too bright.”

“That must mean he’s dumber ‘n dirt if you’re noticing.” Fred looked confused. “Go on,” Drake prompted.

“Leslie is a man, even though he has a girl’s name. He don’t like it when we try to call him Les. He got beat up a lot in prison. I personally think he liked it. Getting beat up, that is. Then there’s Snake. He’s with the brotherhood.”

Drake thought he knew what he was talking about, but he wanted to be sure.

“What brotherhood?”

“You know, the Aryan brotherhood. He’s a Nazi. He says next month he’ll have more guys coming.”

Fuck.

“Why is Huey so hellbent on recruiting guys to help my father?”

“It’s the other way around. Norville tells Huey what to do. Your dad and his cousin used to own this town. Huey’s been trying to keep things together, but Norville says he’s going to own the county with all his contacts.”

“How does the sheriff figure into all of this?”

“Snake told me that he doesn’t want to get his hands too dirty, he just wants kick-backs, so Huey’s been paying him and a judge off.”

Drake swallowed hard to keep the bile down. Just what kind of family tree had he fallen out of? And where the hell was Huey hiding out, because he sure as hell hadn’t been at the homestead last night.

“Where you from, Fred?”

“Kentucky.”

“This your car?” Drake could see the man consider lying. He knocked him on the same spot on the head.

“Ow. That hurts. It’s my aunt’s car.” Drake would bet anything that his aunt didn’t know Fred had it.

“Fred, you’re going to head back to Kentucky tonight. If I see your ass in Tennessee again, I’m going to kill you. Do you hear me?”

“Huey’ll kill me if I leave.” Drake set down his gun on the backseat, leaned over the front seat, grabbed him by the throat and used the thumb of his other hand to dig into the goose-egg on the man’s head. He was gratified by Fred’s scream.

“I’ll go. I’ll go. Please stop.” Drake waited a moment, then he felt tears hit the hand that was holding onto Fred’s throat.

“Give me your gun and I’ll let you loose,” Drake promised.

“I don’t have one.”

Drake dug in harder.

“It’s in the glove box.”

What a dumbshit. He’d had his gun where it wasn’t readily available.

“Open the driver’s side door and get out of the car when I let you loose, Fred. Then go to the hood of the car and assume the position.”

“I’ll do anything. Just stop hurting me.”

More tears hit Drake’s hand. He released Fred and prayed he wouldn’t make a play for the gun in the glovebox. Not that he’d have a problem subduing the asshat. Nope, he just wanted Fred to be conscious and able to drive back to Kentucky in the next ten minutes.

Fred opened the car door and was soon pressed spread-eagled over the hood of the car. Drake leaned over the front seat and pulled Fred’s pistol out of the glovebox. He then got out of the car and frisked Fred and found a switchblade in his boot.

“Pop the trunk of the car,” Drake directed, wanting to see if there were any more weapons.

The smell of body odor assaulted him when the trunk opened.

“My God man, haven’t you heard of deodorant?” Drake demanded. It had been rank in the car as the man sweated, but the pile of dirty laundry made him gag.

“I was going to go to the laundry-mat,” Fred defended himself.

“Just get home to Kentucky and burn your clothes, you can’t save them. If I see you here again, you’re going to be the first one I target. Are we clear?”

Fred nodded.

“Say the words. Are we clear?”

“Yes. I’m leaving town now. Can I have my gun?” he asked, proving just how stupid he was.

Drake shook his head and pointed to the open car door. “You’ve got one minute for me to see taillights. Otherwise you’ll be wishing Huey was here.”

Fred stood there looking at him.

“One, two, three,” Drake started counting, and Fred scrambled towards the driver’s seat. He hit his knee against the door. Once again, Drake had to listen to him whine. Fred gunned the car trying to get it to go. It was obvious the parking brake was on, but that didn’t stop him from continuing to press on the accelerator. God, he’d be lucky to make it out of Sevier County, let alone back home to Kentucky. Finally, Fred figured out his problem and the car lurched forward, and he did a fast U-turn. It had taken longer than the allotted time, but Drake always gave extra consideration to the chronically stupid.
