Grace had needed Rye to stay across the room. She was able to think better when he wasn’t touching her, but then again, he knew that. Well, if he was going to go down that road, so could she.

“Apparently, my connection to Brandon is out for all the world to see and dissect. No one really knows that you and I reconnected, and it needs to stay that way. Now that I’ve been cleared, the media will hopefully move on. The media, police, and public are always looking for connections in cases like these, and they’ll hit pay dirt when they figure out our history. You need to go to work and stick to your daily routine until this whole thing blows over.”

“Don’t you see that this gives us the advantage? Let us be the ones who control the narrative before this asshole tries to use this against us,” Rye suggested confidently, taking the coffee cup from her hand and setting it gently on the countertop. He leaned in close so that the entire front of his body was touching hers, causing an instant reaction. “I know how much it bothers you to lose control of the situation.”

Grace could have easily kept arguing, running them in circles until they each had to call a stalemate. Fortunately, an impasse would be in her favor, but all she could think of was that this could very well be the last time he was in her apartment for quite a while… at least until the police had caught the individual responsible for Brad’s death.

“You’re so mean,” Grace whispered encouragingly, tilting her head back as she finally allowed him to press his warm lips against her neck. Did he truly believe that she would fall for this type of persuasion? It would have been laughable had her body not responded to his in kind. Well, it seemed that she would have to improvise and turn the tables to her advantage. She ever so slowly ran her right hand over his wrinkled shirt until she was cupping the bulge in his pants. The vibrations of his groan traveled to every erogenous zone in her body. “Why don’t we think on the merits each other’s positions while we take a shower?”

Rye pulled back, his smoldering gaze zeroing in on her and clearly trying to find the angle she was working in her bid to get him to see things her way. He was a very highly intelligent man. He had to see that he would lose without her cooperation.

“Aren’t you doing the very same thing?” Grace countered, purposely slipping past him and heading for her bedroom without looking back. She made sure to emphasize the sway in her hips as she walked away. “Why don’t we see who comes out the victor?”

The L’Etoile family traced its roots back to the 13^th century. The name carried a popular familiarity thanks to a branch of the family that came to fame in the early 18^th century as perfumers to royalty. L’Etoile fragrances became known worldwide and their shop on the Left Bank in Paris remained one of the most famous perfume destinations in the world.

And one of my personal favorites.

Fifty years after the French Revolution one member of the family, Sebastian L’Etoile, settled in Eze, opening a shop to sell his brother’s fragrances. Eventually, he branched out and founded the Museum of Mysteries, mainly as a place to store artifacts brought back from expeditions to Egypt. Sebastian rediscovered a tunnel that extended from the back of the shop into the mountain, closed off long ago by an avalanche, perfect as a repository. So an entrance was created from the shop. A door, with no knob, no knocker, no lock. Just oak panels bound by iron. Which only the curator could open through a complicated puzzle that predated Sebastian L’Etoile’s rediscovery.

Curiosity had gotten the better of me, and so some research had revealed that, in the 5^th century, some of the women of Eze, after being branded witches, had used the tunnel as an escape route down to the sea. Their stories were told through carvings in the walls, which Nicodème had allowed me to see. Goodbye messages. Parting advice. Recipes for spells and potions. Final messages to those they were leaving behind. Seeing them at once both moving and hopeful. Now the old tunnel contained over three hundred rare objects.

One of them apparently gone.

Being carted away, through a rainstorm, across the streets of Eze by a thief.

Hildick-Smith hung a left at a fork in the street, which gave me hope. I knew Eze, every warren of turns and alleyways, every dead end. Clearly my quarry wasn’t as well versed since he’d just chosen one of the inescapable routes, this one ending at a viewing platform where tourists could gaze at the valley below, the towns in the distance, and the endless sea and sky.

I took the same left and saw Hildick-Smith ahead.

He stopped running, then casually joined a small grop of visitors with umbrellas enjoying the scenic vista. I slowed, caught my breath, and approached. To gain control of the wooden box, Hildick-Smith had drawn a pistol in the shop and held both me and Nicodème at bay. If threatened, he might use his weapon. My instincts told me to shout for the people to clear out so I could deal with the problem. But approaching I suddenly realized something.

He was gone.

So, say you’re a smart by not very, erm, experienced girl. And say that your bestie is not only super-hot with plenty of experience, but he also always has time for you. It only stands to reason, then, that you’d turn to him in your quest to get your groove back. And the rest, as they say, is history…

Kendall Ryan’s contemporary romances are guaranteed feel-good reads. I mean, it’s impossible not to enjoy the heck out of yourself when you crack open one of her books. She’s got a handle on all of the tropes, and they never cease to appeal. In LOVE MACHINE, Kendall tries her hand at the ‘friends to lovers’ story, with a touch of the ‘secret romance,’ and, well, she’s got another winner on her hands.

Keaton and Slate are both extremely likable, her for her nerdy earnestness, and him for his desire to be truly available to Keaton, and not just on a physical level. I love that their relationship has stood the test of time, and that they are actually invested in each other. Them making their way to each other seems more like a ‘when’ than ‘if’ scenario, and they are perfect for each other.

The secondary characters are fun and supportive, especially Penny, the cat, who steals the show, and help make LOVE MACHINE the easy 4 stars (and probably one of my top KR reads) that it is. Kendall’s fans, or any romance lover looking for some pure enjoyment, will want to make sure to grab this one right away and put it at the top of their summer TBR pile.

“She’s also brilliant—so don’t play cards with her—and fun as hell, so definitely drink with her,” Taite adds with a smirk.

I point a red fingertip at her and narrow my eyes. “You behave. Don’t scare away fresh meat.”

Matteo laughs, and it’s husky and warm, stroking down my spine and making me want to purr.

When I clock out and head for the park, anticipation runs through my veins like a good buzz on a night out. A reunion booking could be my way out of trouble. A five-day gig might bring me very close to the finish line.

Along the way, I stop in front of a dry cleaner, check my reflection in the plate-glass shop window, and reckon that I look the part April wants: dark jeans, motorcycle boots, and well-worn T-shirt that shows off the ink on my arms. Tribal bands, a sunburst, and a compass. I haven’t shaved in two days, and my stubble is rough. If she wanted clean-cut and business attire, I’d have covered up the tats with a crisp white shirt and a fine silk tie, then slid a blade across my jaw in the a.m. If she wanted sophisticated, I’d have given her the smooth, James Bond voice to boot. She could have me as a country boy, even, in a pair of steel-toed cowboy boots and with the drawl to match.

But April wants the guy who might have screwed her in the restroom of a bar.

She wants gravel and sandpaper, ink and danger, shades and leather.

The more you give someone what they want, the more you get in return.

When I reach the park, I head to the Terrace Bridge. She’s not here, but I’m early, since I like to get a read on any and every situation. What it has in store today is anyone’s guess. I lean my hip against the stone railing, and I wait. Two minutes later, I spot a threesome walking in my direction. My heart thumps, and I groan quietly.

Why does the universe do this to me?

Blond curls, lips like a bow, a tight trim waist. Even from several yards away, I can tell she wears little makeup—she has that fresh-faced, rosy glow about her, and something innocent yet knowing in her expression. Like Lily James, whom I developed a wicked crush on when I watched her in her latest movie.

April’s not tiny, but she’s not towering either. Maybe five-three, five-four. A delicious dream. Which translates roughly to “just my type.” She wears tight jeans, a long black shirt that clings to her figure, and a huge silver necklace with a heart charm that dangles between her breasts.

As if I wouldn’t already be checking them out without the pendant between them.

I’ve had many clients. Keeping it platonic has never been an issue since I’ve never been attracted to a customer.

Until now.

Looks like I’ll be getting familiar with how to resist temptation.

Sarina Bowen has this gift of bringing characters to life in a very realistic, humbling way. I think every reader of every age can identify with the characters. While one character is just beginning her path in life the other is learning to change theirs. I absolutely loved this book.
