good starLis Review

I must admit, I’m not a big fan of science fiction. Too much effort is needed to picture the world and I really have to read the details, sometimes over and over, to get that picture to form. I’m sure you know what I mean.. there’s satellites, and spaceships with weird names and all the jargon for ordinary items that if they just called a gun a gun it would be so much easier. Yes.. I guess that means I’m a lazy reader.

However, Elusive Radiance was such an easy read and the characters’ personalities jumped right out that I didn’t mind reading all the details of the world in which they live. Aidee Ladnier made the terminology fade into the background and in my opinion that makes this a good story.

We meet Security Officer Anais and Delegate Savea Blackmum as they first meet, just before Savea has to represent her planet for the first time at a major trade conference. Savea needs to make a good impression, and fortunately for her Anais is not only well trained to be a bodyguard but has studied the business of the different delegates at this conference so is able to help Savea navigate the negotiation process to get to the best contacts. The attraction between them is instantaneous and neither one lets the difference in their status or class keep them apart. Anais is smart as well as skillful. Savea is more than just a delegate and does what she feels is right at the end to enable Anais to gain her freedom and travel wherever she wants to go. Their time together is short but they make the most of it in order to be able to even consider a future together.

The story was compact as one would expect for a story of only 41 pages, but there was a lot of detail that brought all the scenes to life. This story was like the tip of the iceberg of the relationship between Anais and Savea. I wish we had more of a chance to explore their relationship. Perhaps this author will expand on their story in a future book.

She glided toward me with a sexy smile on her luscious lips.

“Hey, you.” Her voice was low and husky. Sexy as fuck.

Both our work schedules had been crazy and even when I’d called Eva to just have dinner with me, she’d made excuses why she could not see me. As tempted as I was to show up at her door again, I didn’t want to upset her and risk her refusing to accompany me to the event, so I got stuck in at work putting in more time than I had in the last few weeks.

“Fuck, I missed you,” I said as it hit me like a bullet between the eyes.

Red lips and long sweeping eyelashes were complemented by dangling earrings that shone as the light caught them. I took her hand in mine and kissed her fingertips before spinning her around so that I could admire all of her.

I nearly choked when she turned her back to me. The dress dipped to just above her ass, the fabric draped in such a way that it begged to be touched.

“You like?” she purred, turning her head so that she could peer seductively at me from under her lashes.

“I’m speechless. You look . . . so utterly fuckable, I just want to tear that dress off you with my fucking teeth,” I admitted.

“Haha. It took me hours to get ready. We have an event to attend, remember?” She raised a perfect eyebrow at me, smiling smugly. “And you look pretty dashing yourself.” She stroked my chest, smoothing out my dress shirt. “Hmm, a bowtie. That’s sexy as hell.”

Her fingertips brushed the edges of the black silk and then along my jaw line, causing my blood pressure to rise a few degrees. She stood on her toes and planted the softest kiss on my lips. Her perfume snaked its way to my nostrils and turned my mind to mush.

I frowned, not sure how I felt about her wearing that dress. Jealousy swarmed my gut and found a resting place in the pit of my stomach. I swallowed hard, trying to rein it in and act maturely.

“I’m going to be the envy of every man there.” She smiled knowingly. Fuck. This was doing my head in. “I will kill any fucker who tries to touch you. You are mine only. Remember that.”

Lis Review

“Tormented” is the continuation of the story of Eva Ryder and Harrison Summers. Thrown together by the fact that Eva’s brother and Harrison’s sister are a couple, they really didn’t seem like a very likely fit when we first got to know them in book 2 of this series “Unchain My Heart”. Harrison is dark, broody, mysterious and full of a desire for one thing: revenge against the bikers who killed his first wife and unborn child. Eva works for her father in the music business, a classy, in-charge businesswoman who wants more than just sex from the handsome cop; but since she is the sister of a biker who belongs to the club that he believes killed his loved ones, Harrison has a very difficult time letting this relationship be anything more than just sex.

Yet, here they are, still together. And in this book, we take the journey with them as they explore that relationship. It grows in intensity to the point where both realize how much they mean to each other. It’s more than lust, it’s more than scratching the itch. Slowly but surely they learn to open themselves to the possibility of need.. of desire.. of love. Harrison demands Eva’s submission, which she gives him willingly. They soon come to understand that by giving each other something they want, they gain so much more. Eva feels safe with Harrison, Harrison feels emotions again and both realize that they are working toward the healing they desperately need.

Yet Harrison’s reputation as a heartless, uncaring hatred-filled cop bent on gaining revenge at any cost, precedes him. When Eva takes him to meet her father, things unravel in a big way. Harrison’s darkness overwhelms him and he abandons Eva, at the exact time her ex, the revered Senator Parker, comes back into her life to claim her as his own. Eva feels that sacrificing her happiness to save Harrison is the only option she has. Harrison realizes just what Eva means to him and must battle the darkness within him to save her. Despite his profession, he’s failed at saving his wife and child, failed at saving his sister’s baby, so when faced with having to save this woman he’s come to love, he vows to be successful this time. Their conflicts are real and the resolution is not without tragedy.

With this book, Jani Kay has really upped her game. This story is gritty, emotional, and realistic in every way. She doesn’t sugar coat the evil, nor does she give us a romance viewed through rose colored glasses. What she does do is make these characters ones we want to shout at sometimes, cheer for at others. She has come so far as an author, and this book shows the depth of understanding of her characters and their fight to get to the life they desire. For those who’ve read the series, you won’t be disappointed, although you will be surprised at Harrison’s decision regarding the motorcycle club he vowed to destroy. For those new to Jani Kay’s biker series, jump right in to the crazy MC world of Ryder and Jade, Harrison and Eva, and all the members of the Scorpio Stinger MC

Lis’ Review

The authors of “Crimson Reign” and “Love, Life and Circumstance” have never been ones to shy away from digging deep to give their readers a story that pushes boundaries, makes the readers think and feel and clamor for more. Crimson Reign gave us the wickedly sexy vampire king and his angel in a paranormal world in upheavel. LLC gave us two men with a baby to care for in the South with all its prejudices. And now “Broken Oaths” gives us Ryan and Thierry, pushing the limits again with the story of a priest and a Navy Commander.

Thierry Donovan is a former Navy Commander falsely accused of treason and jailed in a super secure facility in solitary confinement. The only other people he sees are the guards who watch over him, including his friend A.J. who goes easy on the rules for the prisoner. Thierry has no outside contact until he asks for, and is sent, a priest, Father Ryan Flynn. Their connection is instant, but like anyone else whose life is tied up in the rules and restrictions of their chosen profession or current fall from grace, both try to deny what they feel.

We learn of their pasts right away. The opening chapters tell us why these men chose the path they did, and give us a glimpse of the obstacles they faced along the way. Thierry’s career and life have been destroyed by his imprisonment. Father Flynn’s profession is an effort to get rid of the sinner label he brought down on himself because of his and his foster brother’s teenage exploration of their growing attraction. Both hide behind these shields they use so effectively – for a while. Thrown together in the priest and penitent roles, they soon acknowledge that there is something more between them as they work to bring justice to Thierry and bring down the one who used him as a scapegoat in a treasonous plot. Their story is about learning to trust in themselves and in each other, never giving up on love no matter how hard the fight.

Orrin Hunt, Flynn’s foster brother, has loved Ryan since they were wayward teens who helped each other cope through the difficult nightmares they faced. He’s involved behind the scenes trying to find the truth behind Thierry’s imprisonment and as such, is the one who brings Father Flynn into Thierry’s life. Orrin’s love for Ryan has endured all these years, until he goes undercover in a local street gang and meets Jay Callahan, the young, smart mouthed leader of the group. Jay falls hard for Orrin, but Ryan is the white elephant in the room, the love Orrin has for Ryan a wall that blinds him to what’s staring him in the face. Their story is about letting go of the past and embracing the future, daring to take the risk for love.

And tying these two couples together is the intrigue, a plot very carefully constructed that makes the reader anxious to find out just exactly how the whole thing will be revealed. It builds like the walls of Thierry’s prison cell, brick by brick. And with four strong-willed characters, there is no doubt they will figure it out.

Unfortunately, the villains were the one area that let me down. Characterization and angst is definitely these authors’ strong suit and in this book the whole mystery was right up there with it. The plot was complex and excellently crafted, with all the characters’ actions and reactions to each other and to their situation adding to the edge of the seat reading experience. Until one particular scene that made me stop and go “Really?” I just didn’t buy it. With that one scene the villains, who up until then were wonderfully evil, became caricatures of themselves. That one scene weakened the intrigue, pushing it into campiness instead of suspense.
Everyday struggles for love, for recognition, for redemption made this book a winner, overcoming the problem with the villains. The love stories of Ryan and Thierry and of Orrin and Jay are well written and very realistic. They struggle with their feelings, each one questioning his worth, his actions, his heart. As they work through all the machinations of being together, we as readers realize right along with them that outer trappings don’t matter. It’s what’s in the heart that rules.

Synopsis

Reece Hatfield has just one rule when it comes to falling in love: don’t fucking do it. There’s no room in his life for another person. He can barely keep a handle on things as it is. A shadow of the man he used to be, Reece spends his days tattooing, the artist inside of him longing for the chance to do something different.

Avery Moore is all dance, all the time. Ballet is all she’s ever known, and she’s damn good at it. Her body is her art, a living canvas that captivates Reece the first time he lays his eyes on her.

He yearns to leave his mark on her body… in more ways than one.

The tattooed degenerate with a shady past. The beautiful ballerina with a bright future. They live in different worlds, yet somehow, they fit. But just because they fit doesn’t mean they belong together. Cracks sometimes form. Two pieces don’t always make a whole. The course of love never did run smoothly. Things get messy.

And Reece doesn’t do messy.

Not anymore.

Lis’ Review

I saw an ad for this book, clicked on amazon.com to check it out and did the “Look Inside” thing to read a few pages to see if it caught my attention. To say it did is an understatement. I was captivated by the Overture, then thrown a curve ball on the first page of chapter one when Reece starts talking. He’s all street kid, all the time. Yes, he’s closing in on thirty and stuck in a rut that life’s misfortunes have thrown him into. Yes, we get the hint that hard times are the only times he’s known. But I can see him, the aging punk in baggy, ripped jeans and worn hoodie, cigarette in hand, hanging out at the tattoo parlor where he works, trying to make it in the city that chewed him up and spit him out not that long ago. I can hear him, his no-nonsense description of life abrupt and to the point.. until he comes face to face with living art in the form of a dancer named Avery.

Avery is “my yellow.” She’s graceful, confident, and not beaten down at all. A student at Juilliard, she was born to be a dancer and she reflects the precise beauty of the classical ballet she’s studied all her life. When she wanders into Reece’s tattoo shop with her friend, he describes her as “a walking talking goddess, an angel in disguise, and she looks at me like she fears I don’t really see her at all.” But she does and she comes back for more.

The two of them are like night and day, his darkness to her light, his life mistakes like black paint on the unmarked pure white canvas that is the protected, naïve dancer. They click, a case of opposites attracting. But we soon discover they are connected in a way that nearly tears them apart.

The only other female to own Reece’s heart is his daughter Lexie. She’s a bundle of energy, a little girl who loves dinosaurs despite her mother’s attempts to give her Barbies. She’s like a runaway train, all loud mouth excitement and childish enthusiasm. She really likes her Daddy’s friend who’s a girl (that would be Avery) and Avery falls in love too, not with Lexie, but with how Reece loves Lexie and shows it in everything he does for her. Reece is a troubled artist, forced to give up what he loved and he’s drawn to Avery who is the protected prima donna dancer given the chance to discover life. And Lexie is the wild glittery glue that brings them together.

This book was a masterpiece of dialogue, description, and emotion. The art of painting in its various forms as done by the Hatter meets the art of dance as given to us in the art of words. The author beautifully describes the gritty side of graffiti covered New York City as well as the clean, montone, upscale side. Reece and Avery’s story unfolds slowly, the details taking shape like the fine lines and colors of the tattoos he works on in his shop. As a reader I was mesmerized, loving every beautifully crafted word. I knew there would be an ugly climax, but like every work of art, it all came together at the end, giving me a treasure of a story.

The Mad Tatter is a must read.. a 2015 favorite for sure.

“Don’t do it,” a deep male voice commands.

A whisper of a breeze caresses my cheek. With a frustrated sigh, I lower my foot and drag my gaze from the murky, dark water that beckons me with its siren’s song. Glaring at the unwelcome intruder, I dash the tears from my cheeks. He stands in the shadow, and all I can make out is that he’s tall with broad shoulders. Striding toward me, hands in his pockets, he starts whistling. The thought occurs to me I should be scared and run, but it’s as if I’m glued to the spot. As he comes into the light, I see he’s a priest. But he doesn’t look like any priest I’ve ever known. This guy is Hollywood gorgeous. Under the dim light, he appears almost incandescent and his emerald eyes seem lit from within. Their intensity burns a hole into my paper-thin bravado, which slips away and disappears like ashes in the wind.

Dammit, I’d just worked up the courage to follow through with my plan to leave this nightmare behind, and this stranger has interrupted, dragging me back to my personal hell on earth.

5StarSunLis’ Review

Just finished this book and I’m smiling big right now. This is the feel good book of the year. I didn’t know what to expect, but irreverent humor and lovable wacky characters won me over from page one. How can you not love a fallen angel with a potty mouth?

Evangeline is a lost soul, depressed, self-tortured with guilt and ready to end it all. Remi (short for Remiel) is a bored angel, who can’t quite toe the line up in heaven, so God sends him to earth to help save Evangeline… as a priest. They meet on a bridge as she’s contemplating suicide. He tells her “Don’t do it.” Which means don’t jump but his reason for her not jumping? “I can’t swim.” I know, not very priestly, or very angelic either, but his flippant attitude and smart ass remarks win over Evangeline before she even knows what’s happening to her. They are a match for each other – she refers to her hometown priest as Father Asswipe. He refers to her as Crazy Girl. Both are heartfelt titles, and we soon realize that once she accepts his offer of a ride home off that bridge, we will be journeying with them on a wild ride.

The secondary characters we meet along the way are hilarious and portrayed perfectly. God as a golf-playing CEO reprimanding his wayward employee angel is perfect. Along the way we meet Mary and Martha, portrayed as two busy-body old ladies; St. Francis of Assissi portrayed as Franco, the convenience store owner who give Evangeline a mangy dog to care for; the angel Rafael, portrayed as a hitchhiking cowboy, and Mary Magdelene, portrayed as a trashy but sexy barfly. Each character has their unique qualities and each plays a part in keeping the two star-crossed lovers on the right path.

However, it’s Remi and Evie that we root for. As readers we want things to work out for them because their love for each other saves them both. It’s bittersweet when Evie finally finds out Remi’s true identity and I was a little disappointed with the way the story had to go, but not enough to want to change a thing. This book made me laugh out loud, cry tears of sadness and joy, and end up smiling like a … Crazy Girl. Lord knows if I had a guardian angel I would certainly want him to be just like Remi. The lessons he teaches Evangeline were not lost on me as the reader; it’s a mantra I try to live myself. And believe me, I will never look at another kids’ play area ball pit in the same way again.

Kudos to Nancee Cain on her debut novel. It’s definitely a 5-star, feel good, have fun and be irreverent read, and I am so looking forward to more inspired stories from this author.

Nancee Cain writes contemporary and paranormal romances with a serrated edge. In her stories she addresses some tough social issues, but always with a healthy dose of humor.

Her daytime hours are consumed by nursing in the never boring field of substance abuse. This is rather ironic since at age 22, she met her real-life hero in a bar. She swears the amount of alcohol she’d consumed had nothing to do with her boisterous proclamation she’d met her future husband. A year later, she married him.

Raised below the Mason-Dixon line, she dishes sarcasm like a Southern woman dishes blackberry cobbler, sweet and tart. She considers life too short not to laugh and too serious not to discuss. Her ultimate book hero will always be Atticus Finch.

An avid reader and admitted autographed book junkie, Nancee needs a 12-step program for her compulsive book buying. Her Devoted Hubby swears her To-Be-Read list qualifies her as a certifiable book hoarder.

Lis’ Review

Cobra and Daemon.. twins and competitors, no sibling bond, only the younger twin always trying to out-do the older. Especially when it comes to Mia, Cobra’s wife, Dameon’s dream. Will evil triumph this time?

When last we saw Cobra and Mia, their son had been kidnapped and the search for him led to secrets being revealed, secrets Mia had kept buried for years. Secrets that were tearing apart her marriage to Cobra as they both tried to deal with the kidnapping. The first part of this book tells their back story, how they met, how Mia managed to escape her fate. It’s a tough tale, but important for the reader to understand the past to appreciate what happens in the present. Learning the relationship between Cobra and his twin and how it affects his relationship with Mia is a twisted tale of sibling rivalry taken to the extreme.

Fast forward to the second part of the book, the present where everything Cobra and Mia built is being tested as they search for their kidnapped son. Daemon’s role in the kidnapping is obvious, and the evil he perpetrates just gets worse and worse. Emotions are stretched thin as Cobra and Mia try to deal with their fears, their worries and their crumbling marriage. It’s gut-wrenching and gritty, and we feel everything they do along their journey.

This is book 4 in the Scorpio Stinger series and all the main players are back.. Ryder and Razor, Hammer and the rest of the MC, plus their reluctant ally, Detective Harrison Summers. The early days of the club, highlighted in part one of the book, give us a glimpse of what the boys were like at a young age, and how Cobra inherits the presidency from his father. Part two, we see the opposite… how they’ve matured in some ways, and how they struggle to cope when disaster strikes. This book shows how Jani Kay has improved as an author as well, the story both compelling and all too real, the characters becoming truly three-dimensional in every way. The author doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities and parts of the book are not for the faint of heart. But that’s real life sometimes.. and what makes Cobra and Mia finally come to realize the importance of holding onto the love they share.

Jani KayJani has been married for a long time to a special man, and her two children and their partners are the sunshine in her life. She is a voracious reader and would spend her last dollar on a book – always fascinated that for the mere price of a book, she can escape her world for a while and see through someone else’s eyes.

Besides reading, her favorite ‘thing’ is traveling – she has traveled the world, learning about the ways people live and has come to the realization that no matter where we live, we all ultimately want the same things. Her hobby – Scrapbooking – keeps her up till way after midnight and her usual subjects are her family and her travels.

Ever since she can remember, Jani wanted to write stories about people, about their lives and loves. Relationships and Happiness – arguably the most difficult things to master in life and yet exactly what everyone ultimately desires (in her humble opinion).

Lis’ Review

The story of Ansleigh’s Grotto is full of magic, interesting characters, and a beautiful love story. Dylan is a man who seems to have a charmed life… he’s just inherited a wonderful estate, his work for the gaming company is well received and his career is taking off. Yet when he returns to claim his inheritance, he realizes that something.. or rather, someone, is missing from his life but he just can’t quite remember who.. or why.

The meeting with Ansleigh of the title is rather normal..he’s an employee on what is now Dylan’s estate. Just like Silas and Aggie, who work in the house that Dylan now calls home. But we soon learn everyone in this book has a bit of fae magic inside them and that’s where the fantasy world and the real world collide.. in a big way.

The story is short, but the detail is rich and what makes this book so special. JT Cheyanne paints a picture of the estate Dylan inherits with such detail and precision that when the trees begin to talk, and the wind becomes malevolent, it’s so believable because we’ve become immersed in this fae fantasyland. As we read, we see what Dylan sees, feel what he feels, even smell what he smells. We question and wonder right along with him. Just like the video games Dylan designs, we are drawn in with each description, each portrayal of emotion that before we know it, the struggle to regain the love between Dylan and Ansleigh is real. The battles between the Seelie and UnSeelie fae are real. And the antics of the sprites and elves are real.

Dylan and Ansleigh’s love story is sweet yet sexy and powerful. We cheer for them but it’s truly the other fantasy characters that give life to this story. Sprites who are the equivalent of a bickering Tinker Bell and Peter Pan, elves who hide their true identities in the guise of elderly servants, and the Taco Bell godfather voice who advises Dylan to “Live mas” brought humor and depth to the whole fantasy becomes reality story. The evil UnSeelie is just as well developed. Like the fae of myth, he is handsome to look upon, but rotten and deadly underneath. The author’s research of the Irish legends is detailed and believable, and she brings some of the more interesting creatures to life in this book.

Deep down, this is a love story that touches on themes we are all familiar with. Is the bond of love strong enough to overcome past mistakes? Is a newfound love worth fighting for? Is the realization that no matter what the obstacles thrown in the path, two people who love each other with all their hearts and souls will ultimately triumph in their desire and intent to be together? Both Dylan and Ansleigh struggle with these questions and ultimately discover that despite the paths they have traveled separately, despite what they thought they knew, coming together again brings answers to questions that can and do make their history complete. JT Cheyanne has created another winning love story that you don’t want to miss.

Lis’ Review

The trip of a lifetime, to celebrate the 20th wedding anniversary. Most couples would be excited, but Lizzy Harper is anxious. Her fears stem from an emptiness she has finally realized exists in her life, in her marriage, in her relationship with her daughter. So when her husband backs out at the last minute, she does the unthinkable. Instead of giving in to him and staying home, giving up on the dream, she goes on the trip. Alone.

Ren Sawyer is a rock star, the lead singer of Temporal. He has everything fame can bring but deep inside he’s empty. At his last concert he had a panic attack so he runs away from it all, hops on a plane and flies off to Italy. The flight is turbulent and a woman literally falls into his lap as she tries to make it back to her seat from the restroom. And that’s how Lizzy and Ren begin the journey they both need to make.

There is a quiet intensity to this book, a depth of emotion that we see through the backdrop of warm Italian days and soft Tuscan nights. Lizzy and Ren are both at a crossroads in their lives, each daring to take the time to look deeply into their souls, trying to find where they have gotten off the path of happiness. Lizzy’s love of photography is reawakened in Italy, and as she sees beauty through the lens of a camera, she allows herself to open up to life again. Ren manages to rescue a puppy at one of the stops they make in their journey through Tuscany, a scrawny puppy with little hope until the rock star starts singing to her to calm her fears and bring her out of her hiding place into his hand. A hand that desperately needs to hold onto unconditional love instead of self-loathing and guilt. Lizzy and Ren discover themselves and each other at a time when they are most vulnerable in their lives.

The reader will think the story is on its way to the expected conclusion until a tragic set of circumstances brings the HEA into question. Ms. Cooper not only gives us the story from the point of view of the main characters, but also Lizzy’s husband Ty and her daughter Kylie. While Lizzy and Ren are written in first person, so that you get both points of view, Ty is written in second person (“You think you know someone.”) and Kylie is written in third person (“Kylie hangs up from the phone call with her dad….”). It may seem disjointed but it works beautifully because each style portrays the character exactly. Ty is full of himself. Kylie is the detached spoiled child. Lizzy and Ren live in the moment. And when it all comes together, Ms. Cooper’s exquisite, emotionally intense story makes us realize we’ve all been through our own crises the same way, experiencing it first hand if it’s our own problem, feeling detached and aloof if it’s someone else. The metaphors are obvious: the beauty of a far off land, the use of photography as a way to open up, the broken rock star who, despite the pact he and his brother made when they first started out, is on his way to being the cliché. Yet the story never feels contrived, never seems obvious. And that’s the beauty of it. “Rock Her” is a beautiful song about life, a quiet must read, a true romantic tale of love, loss and self discovery.
