A nip of his teeth, his hand at my waist…

And I was lost.

I forgot he was paying me to be his fake fiancée.

I forgot we weren’t REAL.

EXCERPT

Max stalked over to the barrier that divided the stands from the football field and jumped it. The fans went nuts as he brushed past them, some not even realizing it until he was down the aisle. The Jumbotron followed him.

“Good Lordy, what’s he doing?” Mimi asked, clutching at her chest.

“I don’t know,” I said rather weakly, taking the chance to study him the closer he came. He was beautiful, his shoulders impossibly broad. To add to the distraction, his helmet was in his hand and all that dark brown hair was flowing around his chiseled features as if he had a fan in his face. My Viking.

“He’s coming over here,” Mimi commented.

He was. But why?

I stopped breathing . . .right when he came to a halt in front of me and knelt down on one knee.

Eyes the color of a wild ocean gazed at me.

He took my left hand in his right one.

“Max,” I breathed, my heart fluttering.

He gazed up at me. “Sunny Blaine, will you marry me?”

The stadium went wild. In a daze, I looked up at the Jumbotron and felt like I was watching this happen to someone else. Camera phones flashed all around us.

My first clear thought was I’ll kill him.

Aloud, nothing came out but a faint wheeze. Clearly someone had stuffed a giant wad of cotton in my mouth. Clearly I needed something a lot stiffer to drink than this Diet Coke. Clearly my fake boyfriend was a freaking raving lunatic.

He sat his helmet on the ground next to my feet, reached inside it and pulled out a small black box.

No, no, no!

The box opened, and my stomach churned at the sight of the large round solitaire diamond ring that was nestled on the black silk. I blinked repeatedly to clear my vision.

With deft fingers, Max eased it out of the lining and slipped it on my left hand.

I stared down at it. Then back at him.

I was going to murder the hottest quarterback in the country.

Kiss her, Kiss her, the crowd chanted.

We were the focal point of the entire world.

Max stood and tugged me up with him until we were standing. He slid his hand around my neck and pulled his face to mine. The sky was blotted out as he kissed me.

But I hadn’t said yes!

I wouldn’t say yes.

Not to a fake engagement.

The applause of the stadium was deafening. And his kiss—it was deadly. Despite my rage, my body craved him. His lips were hot, so hot, and my tongue met his with a vengeance. We kissed hard, and I nipped at him, my teeth scraping across his lips. But the only one who’d end up bleeding in this scenario was me.

He eased back to take me in, and with a final look at my face he gave a thumbs-up sign to the entire stadium. They went nuts, chanting his name.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered in my ear, letting his hand trail down my arm as he stepped back from me. He walked away backward, eyes on me the entire time. The announcers for the game told everyone who might have missed it that Max Kent had just asked his girlfriend to marry him, and she’d said yes. More cheers came as they replayed him on his knee in front of me with a giant YES written across the top.

I plopped back down in my seat. Frozen.

“. . . did you see her face? Shocked . . .”

“. . . most romantic thing in football . . .”

“. . . luckiest girl in the world . . .”

My face went hot. Even my ears burned. I wanted to crawl under a seat.

God.

What a lie.

The half ended and our offense came out to the field, snapped the ball, and Max threw it straight to Tate who ran it in for another touchdown. My chest constricted and anger churned in my gut.

I didn’t care who won.

I hated football right now.

Most of all, I hated Max Kent, and I was going to make him pay.

Michel’s Review

As we all know there are thousands of romance novels based upon the theme of a fake engagement that leads to true love and the fairytale happily ever after.  Readers are suckers for these kind of romances.  With so many books on the market with this theme many could say it’s unoriginal and predictable.  That may be true but what makes each of these new books stand out and hook the reader completely is the delivery of the story, the characters, and the circumstances of their fake engagement.  The author has to dig deeper and become even more creative to make their book a success among the reading population.  The author has to make their characters larger than life as well as making them ordinary people with extraordinary circumstances so readers can easily relate to them.  Then the author has to add the meat of the story and make it very convincing.  The author also has to add the charm and magical qualities of true romance.  Ilsa Madden-Mills has found her magic formula and delivered an utterly charming and convincing romance that will leave the readers lining up for invitations to Max and Sunny’s wedding.  Fake Fiancee by Ilsa Madden Mills is a modern day fairytale romance.

Max Kent is the star quarterback at Leland.  It’s his senior year and he’s in the running for the Heisman Trophy.  Winning the Heisman Trophy is something his father, a former football star turned professional sports anchor, did not achieve in his illustrious football career.  Max has lived in his father’s shadow and also suffered from his father’s fame all his life. His talent on the field is undeniable but his volatile reputation could stand in the way of winning the trophy.  His toxic relationship with his former girlfriend and his fights with the second string quarterback were all over social media last year.  His senior year will be the defining factor in winning the trophy.  He has to lay low, play well, and keep out of the social media gossip.  When he meets his neighbor Sunny Blaine, she presents the perfect solution to his senior year.  She’s the ticket to winning the Heisman Trophy.  He is going to convince her to become his fake girlfriend until the football season is over.  It will benefit them both.  It’s also easy being around Sunny.  She’s a real girl who doesn’t let others dictate her life.  She’s smart, sassy, and fun to be around.  She’s truly someone he could fall in love with.

Sunny Blaine is dreading her senior year.  After a harsh breakup that ended without real closure, she’s dreading going to class.  Her ex boyfriend is in quite a few of her classes.  Their relationship never had real closure and left her wallowing in hurt from his deceptions. When Max offers her a solution to keeping her pride intact, she reluctantly agrees with his plan.

Max and Sunny had an instant connection the moment they met.  They developed a strong friendship that led to love.  With the end of the season approaching they will have to decide if they want to end their deceptions or grab onto something that is greater than winning any kind of award.  Fate put them in each other’s paths.  Fate had plans for them all along.  Who are they to defy fate.

I absolutely loved this book.  Fake Fiancee was heart-warming, charming, and entertaining.  Ilsa Madden Mills has created a fairytale romance!

Sometimes appearances deceive. Take me, for instance. I look like a respectable doctor with his shit together, but the rural Montana mental hospital I work at is actually a sanctuary from my demons. I’ve found peace when a new patient turns me inside out. Allison Cole is a beautiful, haunted survivor who fell into silence after witnessing a murder. But even without words, I’m drawn to her. The closer we get, the more I’m tempted to cross my professional boundaries and give in to my desire.

Tracey’s Review

It was easy to get lost in this book. I mean, really, first page, and I was gone. I have always appreciated and enjoyed author Brenda Rothert. She’s the mistress of a hot hockey read, which I love (Ryke forever!), but has recently stepped out into more of what I’d call romantic intrigue or suspense, and she is absolutely rocking it. First, there was HIS, which I picked up and could not put down. It was a great read, and I was excited to see that COME CLOSER would be a little bit different, as well. Brenda has written a book that I tore through because I couldn’t wait to see what the heck would happen next, and that I couldn’t wait to tell other readers about.

One of my favorite things about this book is the characters that Brenda has written. Doctor Daniel Delgado is a flawed man, but he’s self-aware and stronger because of it. His humanity and humility shine through in everything that he does, and make him the perfect doctor for the patients at Hawthorne Hill, including Allison Cole. His ability to meet Allison exactly where she is, and to gain her trust, sets the stage for this different, engaging, action-packed, intriguing gem of a book that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat until the very last.

COME CLOSER is full of twists and turns, and best read with no pre-conceived notions or clues, so I don’t want to give anything away, but believe me when I say that you want to read this book. It’s an easy 4.75 stars for me, and one that I happily recommend. You need it on your TBR right now; it’s that good. Enjoy.

She was my nightmare. Every time I closed my eyes, I watched her fall into that inferno. Over and over, I failed to save her.

I hadn’t been able to reach her, and the guilt only burned hotter over time. Four years later, I was the unreachable one.

Heroes aren’t always saints. Sometimes, we’re nothing more than jaded sinners driven by sleepless nights and hearts full of darkness.

And then I met her. She was a dreamer who managed to soothe my scars and heal my wounds.

But, as the flames closed in around us, I feared I wasn’t the right man to save her. That is until I realized she was the one woman I’d burn the world down to protect.

Chapter One

Jude

“Tomorrow, it’s on me,” I said, standing up off the barstool.

Behind the bar, Carmen waggled her eyebrows, seductively calling out, “Funny, I could be on you tonight if you stayed awhile longer.”

I laughed at her innuendo and tossed her a wink. “I gotta get home, babe. Seven a.m. comes way too early.”

“Well, offer’s on the table,” she purred.

It always was with her. And, if I wasn’t careful, I’d eventually take her up on it.

Not that sleeping with Carmen wouldn’t have been good. But, when you find a cheap bar only five minutes from your house, you don’t fuck that up by dipping your cock into the bartender.

“Later, Carmen,” I called, pushing the door open and heading to my car.

I wasn’t out of the parking lot before I heard, “Officer Levitt? We’ve got an alarm going off in Park Hill. You mind taking a look on your way home?”

Banging my head back against the headrest, I groaned to myself. Park Hill was about as “on my way home” as swinging past California on the way to Maine.

Switching my radio to my other hand, I complained, “I’m off the clock, Jocelyn.” I had been for several hours, even if I hadn’t made it home yet.

She laughed. “I’m sorry, but you’re the only one remotely close. I had to send two cars out to the Laslows’ to break up another argument between Cam and his old man.”

“They at it again?” I asked.

“Apparently, Cam told Lindsey he didn’t want the baby. Lindsey told his dad. Old Man Laslow lost his mind.”

I chuckled, putting my blinker on and then doing a U-turn in the middle of the empty road. “Christ. I bet he did. I know the man’s seventy-five, but I sure as hell wouldn’t want to go toe-to-toe with him.”

“I’m with you on that. So…you gonna head out to Park Hill?” she asked in a sugary-sweet tone.

I grumbled deep in my chest. “You’re gonna owe me some of that banana bread for this. I missed it the other day when you brought it up to the station.”

“I don’t owe you anything.” She giggled. “However, as a personal thank-you from the state of Illinois, Park County, and the owners of Park Hill, I’ll bring you in a loaf on Friday. Deal?”

“Deal. I’m en route now.”

“Stay safe, and radio in with your report.”

“Yes, ma’am,” I replied, knowing exactly how much thirty-year-old Jocelyn loved being called ma’am by a twenty-five-year-old man.

“Don’t you—”

“Gotta go.” I turned the volume down to mute her, grinning to myself as I flipped my lights and siren on.

I’d been a cop for two years. And, in that time, I’d been out to the privately owned Park Hill estate at least a dozen times. It wasn’t unusual for the alarm on the mansion to get triggered. It never amounted to anything. The expansive estate was on the very edge of the county, and trouble didn’t usually travel that far out. More often than not, a bird at a window or a bumbling new member of the grounds crew would accidentally trip the alarm. Truth was, no one actually lived in Park Hill. The owners visited sporadically. But, for the majority of the time, it remained empty.

Some minutes later, I cut my siren as I pulled up to the entrance. The cold air assaulted me as I stepped out of my patrol car with my flashlight in hand and aimed at the keypad on the massive security gate that blocked the driveway off. That damn thing alone had to have cost more than I’d make in a lifetime. Forget about the house inside.

The smell of wood burning in a fireplace wafted through the night air. I guessed someone was home for a visit.

I typed in the emergency code on the gate panel and then climbed back in my car and made my way down the tree-lined driveway. I’d spent the day on patrol, and, with the exception of some minor vandalism across town, it had been a slow one.

Though, in the blink of an eye, that would change.

Along with my entire life.

“Oh fuck,” I breathed as the main house came into view on the top of the hill.

After throwing my car in park, I jumped on the radio at my shoulder. I could barely get the words out as I slung my door open and took off at a dead sprint.

“This is Officer Levitt! I need fire support at Park Hill immediately!”

And then I froze as a wave of adrenaline crashed into me like a tsunami.

An inferno roared in the night sky, but it was the small silhouette of a woman perched outside a third-floor window, smoke pouring out all around her, that knocked the breath out of me. My heart stopped, but my feet continued to pound against the pavement.

Jocelyn’s voice caught me. “What’s going on?”

“I need medical too!” I barked as I got closer. “The whole damn place is in flames and there’s a woman trapped!”

The woman’s long, black hair blew out behind her like a battered flag whipping in a storm. I couldn’t make out her face or her skin color or even guess at her age for the black soot covering her, but her fear was unmistakable.

And unforgettable.

“Hang on!” I yelled up to her.

“Oh my God!” she screamed before it turned into a fit of coughing. “Help me!”

“Hang on! Don’t let go!”

Frantically, I searched the perimeter for a way in, but it wasn’t only her house that was on fire. Flames were encompassing her. The yard and all the surrounding flowerbeds. Top to bottom. The first and second floors were completely engulfed, and if the sound of shattering windows was any indication, it was quickly making its way up to the third floor—to her.

“No! Don’t leave me!” she screamed, panic thick in her garbled voice, as I started around the side of the house.

A wall of heat stopped me in my tracks. Throwing an arm up, I did my best to block my face while scanning the building for any possible entry—or, in her case, exit.

But there wasn’t a surface of that house that wasn’t ablaze.

Except the roof.

Son of a bitch.

I spoke into the radio. “I need an ETA on fire.”

Jocelyn replied, “They’re on their way. Five minutes out.”

I didn’t have one minute, much less five.

Fuck.

My pulse quickened, sending blood thundering in my ears. I was a cop. I’d trained for chaos. I should have been able to come up with a solution for a situation like this, but they didn’t teach you how to conquer the impossible at the Academy.

And, as I took inventory of the flames dancing beneath her, I knew that was exactly what I was up against.

My gut wrenched as I helplessly sped back around the house. She appeared almost childlike, hovering barefoot on that narrow brick ledge, but her long-sleeve top and her loose-fitting pants clung to the body of a woman.

Jesus Christ! Where was that fucking fire truck?

“Is anyone else in the house?” I yelled up to her.

Not that I could have helped them, either. Short of running into a burning building, on what would surely be a suicide mission, there was not one thing I could do. And didn’t that little reality feel like a wrecking ball to the chest.

“No!” she cried, a loud sob lodging in her throat. It turned into more coughing, her body shaking violently with every heave.

I fisted my hands at my sides as my anxiety spiraled higher.

“Please. Do something!” she begged.

I ground my teeth together and once again glanced around as if a water hose and a ladder were going to suddenly appear out of nowhere. “Hang tight, okay? Fire trucks are on their way.”

“I can’t hold on much longer!” she cried.

“Yes, you can,” I demanded.

“I…I think I need to jump,” she coughed out.

I assessed the massive fire below her. I’d never be able to reach her before it swallowed her. But there was no way I’d be able to stand by and watch her burn.

No. If she jumped off that ledge, she was going to get us both killed.

“Don’t you dare,” I barked. “Don’t even think about it. Two minutes. They’ll be here.”

“I…I can’t.”

“Two minutes,” I repeated. “Hold—”

Suddenly, a window to her left exploded, shooting glass and flames in all directions.

I covered my face as she screamed in a paralyzing mixture of fear and agony. It cut me so deep that I knew I’d bear the scars for the rest of my life, and that had nothing to do with the glass and everything to do with the heavy weight of my failure already lingering in the smoke-filled air.

When I opened my eyes again, I caught a glimpse of orange flickering in the window behind her. Panic built in my chest.

“You need to move!” I yelled.

She shook her head and continued to cough and cry.

But it wasn’t an option. I couldn’t help her. Though I damn sure refused to watch her die.

“Please. Just listen to me.” I swallowed hard. “You can’t stay there.” I looked to the roof.

Sending her higher seemed wrong and went against everything I’d learned in my limited fire training. But fuck, my options were having her jump into a conflagration or scale up the side of a building in hopes of buying us the precious minutes needed for the fire department to arrive.

Drawing in a smoke-filled breath, I made a decision that would haunt me for the rest of my life. “You need to climb up to the roof.”

“I can’t!” she shrieked.

My stomach twisted, but I gentled my voice. “Look, I know you’re scared. But I’m right here. I’ll help guide you up, but, sweetheart, it’s bearing down on you. You gotta move, and I mean now.”

She choked on a mouthful of smoke as she attempted to look over her shoulder.

“You’re going to be fine. I swear to you,” I lied. “But you have to move.”

“I’m not going to make it!” She had to have yelled it in order for me to hear her, but I felt her defeat slither over my skin like a whispered goodbye.

I took a long step forward, too focused on her to feel the heat singeing my skin. “Yes, you are!” I declared. “Move your ass up to the roof and we’ll both be out of here in time for breakfast.”

Her gaze landed on mine, tears forging paths down her soot-covered cheeks, her disbelief obvious even from yards away. “Are you sure?”

It was a ridiculous question. It wasn’t like I could make any guarantees. It was fire, for God’s sake. But that didn’t stop me from covering my heart with my palm and vowing, “I swear on my life you’re going to make it through this.”

Her hesitation was evident, but with one last sob, she inched her small body farther out onto the narrow ledge, reaching the tips of her shaking fingers out for the windowsill above her.

“Good girl,” I praised, a fraction of relief washing over me.

And then I sucked in a sharp breath as one of her shaking legs slipped out from under her.

“No!” I yelled.

On instinct, I rushed toward the flames, my arms stretched out in the air as though I could catch her.

A scalding heat blistered my face and forced me to stop, but the real pain was in my chest. I watched in horror for what felt like a lifetime as she fought to right herself, her dainty arms flailing like a wounded butterfly frantically trying to catch the wind.

But there was none to be found.

My heart lurched into my throat, and my breath seized in my lungs.

And then a deep, guttural sound tore through me, shredding me from the inside out, as I watched her fall.

I woke up in a cold sweat. It wasn’t exactly something new. I’d been dreaming of Butterfly for over four years. She always flew directly into the flames, screaming as I stood helpless to save her.

Swinging my legs over the side of the bed, I cradled my head in my hands and tried to pretend I was okay. That wasn’t exactly something new, either. I could still feel the heat on the back of my neck. My lungs were still thick with smoke. The pressure in my chest never left me.

The distance while I was living in LA had helped. But, in the week since I’d been back in Illinois, I’d woken up every morning at that blazing house. I didn’t even have to be asleep for the memories to assault me.

I should have gone back to sleep. It was my first day at my new job, and the last thing I needed was to show up haggard and sleep-deprived. But, as I’d learned over the years, another fiery butterfly awaited me on the other side of REM. No way I was volunteering for that.

I pushed myself off the bed and tugged a T-shirt on, preparing to head down to the hotel gym with hopes that I could outrun the mental fog that had been hovering over me since I’d returned. There was a reason I’d thrown all of my shit in my car and driven as far as I could all those years ago.

Yet, somehow, I’d come full circle.

But I’d come back a different man.

At least that’s what I’d told myself as the deafening roar of doubt had overwhelmed me the moment I’d driven across the state line.

Regardless, it had been time to go home.

I’d been gone too long.

Or, as I’d decided as I’d passed the exit to Park County, not nearly long enough.

PoppyLove and war. Two words that should have little association, but to me the two go hand in hand. Both are a tragedy. They rip you open and spit you out. The war killed my husband, Connor, shattered my will to live, and took my best friend. Brandon may not have physically died in that war, but his soul did. And now we’re left to pick up the wreckage. Expected to move on when all that is left is the ruins of a life we once had.

Brandon

War. It took everything from me, even myself. When you’re only able to exist, death seems like a blessing. Pain…a welcome distraction. I ran from everything associated with my past, and then she found me, fighting, drowning myself in whisky, trying to forget. She reminds me of Connor, of what I’ve lost—what we’ve lost. In the midst of destruction, she’s a salvation I don’t deserve.

I shouldn’t love him.

I shouldn’t love her.

Love is a war we never should have fought.

Michel’s Review

To be quite honest, I don’t know how to review this book. It was not a matter of liking or disliking the book. There was not an issue with the writing or delivery of the story. The writing was beyond excellent considering the subject matter. The subject matter had emotional triggers that affected me personally. When I finished this book it was with a very heavy heart.

War Poppy is not the typical romance. The story portrays real issues that war veterans and their families deal with after they have returned home. War Poppy is not an easy book to read. It does not have a HEA. In fact it is heartbreaking and leaves the reader with a very heavy feeling of despair. I believe that was the clear intentions of authors Stevie J. Cole and LP Lovell, writing as Nicole Lynn, had when writing this book. They intended for this book to leave an impact. They wanted this book to be thought provoking and raise awareness of the very real issues veterans and their families face dealing with PTSD. It is not light reading material. It is a fictional story of three people tied together through life and war.

Most readers pick up a book to escape the realities of the real world. They are looking for engaging entertainment. As a fair warning, War Poppy may have triggers that some readers may not be able to deal with. There are graphic war scenes, severe depression, extreme psychological issues resulting from PTSD, substance abuse, and self-destruction. These issues are handled with complete honesty and compassion for those who are living with these very debilitating problems.

Poppy, Connor, and Brandon grew up together. They became family. Brandon was Poppy’s first crush and first love. He was also Connor’s best friend. He was the protector of their family unit. When Connor chose to enlist, Brandon enlisted right along with him. When Connor died in war, Brandon may as well have died. His body is still alive but his soul is dying a slow death. Rather than facing Poppy after Connor’s death, he went AWOL and disappeared. Dying is easy, trying to live with the aftermath of war is excruciating.

Poppy was devastated when her husband was killed. Her heart was shattered. What made it even more devastating was losing Brandon as well. Brandon disappeared and she has made it her mission to find him. She senses his despair and wants to help him heal. He is as much a part of her as her husband Connor was. When she finally finds Brandon, he’s not the man she has known all her life. He’s lost in a dark world of haunting pain.

Poppy is at a loss on how to help Brandon. Her mixed feelings of friendship and love trigger her guilt about her husband’s death. Deep down she knows Connor would want them both to move on in life. She’s taking the steps to overcome her grief the only way she knows how. She’s doing everything in her power to help Brandon gain the courage to take his own steps towards healing. She is giving him her unconditional love with every ounce of her heart. Sometimes love is not enough.

War Poppy was written with compassion and brutal honesty. The authors did a fantastic job conveying this story. The bonds of love are never questionable. They are absolute. It’s dealing with all the other things haunting their souls that convolute their love for one another. Sometimes even the purest love and good intentions are not enough to keep the demons at bay.

As I finished this book, I couldn’t breathe. I was devastated. I was aching right along with the characters. The harsh truth of their lives is something that happens on a daily basis in real life. Sadly their story is not uncommon. That in itself is the true tragedy!

Michel’s Review

After reading How To Date A Douchebag: The Studying Hours , I was not sure how Sara Ney would be able to redeem Zeke Daniels or make him at least a bit likable.  This guy was a pure jerk.  His roommates ( who are equally just as bad in their own way ) even thought he was an A-hole.  He’s arrogant, confrontational, selfish, and closed off.  He doesn’t discriminate, he treats everyone he comes in contact with the same.  Unlike his roommate Oz, he doesn’t have a charming bone in his body.  He doesn’t claim to be a ladies man, he’s the exact opposite.  He knows his popularity with women is because he’s an athlete.  He doesn’t try to charm their pants off nor does he try to make them feel good.  Jock groupies are just easy lays in that moment in time.

Zeke is struggling with school.  He needs a tutor to help write his Biology paper.  His position on the wrestling team is also on the line and it’s not because of poor grades.  His bad attitude is taking it’s toll on the team.  The coach has laid down the law.  He has to become a Big Brother mentor or lose his place on the team.  It’s time to man up and get with the program.  Zeke is not a happy camper.  He hates the idea of kids.

Violet was assigned to be Zeke’s tutor but bailed when she saw him in the library.  He intimidated her.  Now she’s forced to own up to ditching him and do her job.  As she gets to know him, she begins to see there are many layers to Zeke Daniels.

Violet and Zeke’s paths cross outside of the library.  She babysits a young girl while her parents attend class.  They both are spending time with children in need.  The difference is how they approach their care.  Zeke quickly realizes he needs Violet’s help in the childcare department.

As Zeke’s layers begin to peel away, the readers begin to see a different side to Zeke.  He’s a closet nerd who loves building model planes and reading history books. He is also very observant of others and secretly helps the only way he knows how.  He has a penchant for gambling as well.  He takes on bets he cannot win.  His prickly nature is his armor to protect himself from disappointment.  He has abandonment issues that stem from his childhood.

Violet and Zeke have more in common than they both thought.  As both of their layers begin to peel away, they begin to find a true friendship.  They might even find love.  Zeke’s a work in progress but is worth the effort.  Violet is the only one brave enough to peel those layers away.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Zeke transform into the person both Violet and Coach saw hiding below the surface.  He’s not perfect and still a bit too blunt, but he is a good guy after all.  He’s a work in progress and is excelling.

I am thoroughly enjoying the How To Date A Douchebag series by Sara Ney.  The witty dialogue, snarky attitudes, and creative pickup lines before each chapter are a bonus that makes this series stand out.

About The Studying Hours

CRUDE. ARROGANT. A**HOLE.
No doubt about it, Sebastian ‘Oz’ Osborne is the university’s most celebrated student athlete—and possibly the biggest douchebag. A walking, talking cliché, he has a filthy mouth, a fantastic body, and doesn’t give a sh*t about what you or anyone else thinks.

SMART. CLASSY. CONSERVATIVE.
Make no mistake, Jameson Clarke may be the university’s most diligent student—but she is no prude. Spending most of her time in the hallowed halls of the library, James is wary of pervs, jocks, and douchebags—and Oz Osborne is all three.

She’s smart, sarcastic—and not what he expected.

…EVERY DOUCHBAG HAS HIS WEAKNESS.

He wants to be friends.
He wants to spend time with her.
He wants to drive her crazy.

He wants…

Her.

Michel’s Review

How To Date A Douchebag: The Studying Hours by Sara Ney was a hoot!

Sebastian “Oz” Osbourne is the star wrestler and manwhore on campus.  He is a pig and makes no apologies.  He’ll hookup with a girl in a closet, bathroom, hallway, or anywhere he can drop his pants.  He’s moving onto his next conquest before he has his pants zipped from the last.  He doesn’t do girlfriends or dates.  He’s too busy with wrestling, maintaining his GPA for his scholarship, and working.

When Zeke Daniels bets Oz he can’t get the nerdy looking librarian type of girl sitting at the table across from them to kiss him, Oz can’t turn the bet down.  As he approaches the girl in glasses, pearls, and a cardigan, he thinks it’s going to be easy pickings.  He’s in for a great surprise.  This girl could care less that he is the most desired guy on campus.  She doesn’t even know who he is.  Convincing her is impossible until he mentions money.  This smart mouthed girl is willing to listen.  She’s willing to help with the bet for a price.  The price doesn’t include getting to know him.

Oz is baffled by Jameson Clark.  She’s the first girl to turn him down.  She’s the first girl that actually stands up to him and talks to him as a person rather than a superstar jock.  He’s intrigued and wants to get to really know her.  The chase is on.

Oz and Jameson become reluctant study partners.  Their study dates turn into a friendship that has limits.  Oz is chasing Jameson.  Jameson is pushing Oz back every time he gains ground.  Oz has a lot to learn about real women and real people.  He has to learn the world does not revolve around him.  While Jameson may enjoy teaching Oz a few lessons, her heart is starting to get caught up in the process.

The Studying Hour was a delightful and fun reading experience.  I loved the snarky banter and witty comebacks.  The chemistry between Oz and Jameson was sizzling hot. I highly recommend this book.

Michel’s Review

Crown of Lies is the latest release by Pepper Winters.

In true Pepper Winters style, this book is a complicated, intricately executed story where words are chosen with conscious precision to add multiple layers to the complex characters and their evolving story. Each passage is delivered in perfect synchronicity that challenges the reader’s perceptions of the characters and the direction of the story itself. Her thought process and brilliant use of the English language give the readers more than a story, it gives them a dynamic reading experience that not only involves the mind but also engages all the senses. The reader becomes a participant rather than an observer. The slow burn of sexual tension to explosive passion is only a small fraction of what is happening between the complex characters. The true chemistry comes from their psychological sparring and foreplay. It is a battle of wills fighting against the battle within oneself. There are no dividing lines between right and wrong, black and white, or good and bad. It is all a part of the intricate puzzle that is completed with the last word.

The first sentence had me hook, line, and sinker….

“IN EVERY GIRL’S LIFE, there is betrayal.

“Betrayal from loved ones, unknown ones, and from the ones we choose to make our own. However, where there’s deceit, there’s trust, too. And sometimes, those two things camouflage themselves to mimic the other.”

Retail heiress, Elle Charleston, has been groomed to become one of the most powerful women in the United State. Her throne is the Belle Elle retail chain. She spent her childhood reading ledgers and spreadsheets rather than chasing fairytales. Instead of playing dress up with dolls, she dressed mannequins and window displays. She chose clothes for real women rather than Barbie dolls. She was the princess in a world of merchandise rather than an ivory tower. Her seclusion in a corporate world stole her childhood. She became socially awkward unless she was in a business environment. Her contorted perceptions, and social inadequacies were at war with a young girl yearning to experience the real world.

On her nineteenth birthday the desires of a young girl won the battle over the carefully groomed future CEO. The naive princess stepped out of her gilded castle to explore the kingdom known as New York City. She had been prepared to complete multi – million dollar deals but she was not prepared to navigate the streets. What happened the night she stepped out of her gilded prison would change her life and her perceptions of her carefully orchestrated life.

What starts as a celebration turns into a night of violence and paralyzing fear. Her knight in shining armor is a mysterious young man in a hoodie. A young man that is different from any person she has met in her world. Four simple words changed her world. “ Do you trust me?”. Those four simple words led her to adventure, her first kiss, and ultimately a broken heart. It was a night where the boy of her dreams vanished before the sun began to rise. Her unrealistic dreams were forever lost.

Three years later Elle is a completely different woman. She has succumbed to her prison. She takes her position as a prisoner, other wise known as CEO of Belle Elle, with great pride. She knows her strengths in the business world and the power she carries along with it. She has turned her back on the naïve young girl with grand ideas of romance and love. She no longer believes in romance and love. She no longer puts her blind trust in the hands of others. She has resigned herself to the life she was groomed to rule. In a sense she has betrayed her younger self.

Two men are vying for her attention. One has been groomed to become her husband and partner in business. The other is a repulsive man shrouded in mystery and deceit. One makes her blood boil in many ways. The other makes her soul recoil in everyway. The choices are hers to make. Is she willing to take chances with her perfectly synchronized life? Is she ready to step out of her gilded cage and become free at last?

“IN EVERY GIRL’S LIFE, there is betrayal.”

CLIFFHANGER… IN TRUE PEPPER WINTERS BRILLIANCE!

The reader is left with so many questions,. There are so many intricately woven lies that the truth is hiding within the pages and carefully chosen words. It will all be revealed in the Throne of Truth on February 28th, 2017.

Synopsis

~ Sometimes, one degree is all that separates you from the one you were meant to be with. ~

Wes Bergman was sex on a stick.

We’d been circling one another our entire lives, mingling at the same clubs… attending the same events…sharing mutual acquaintances…yet we’d never actually met.

Until . . . we both boarded a Windjammer Cruise in the Caribbean. And it was like meeting my long, lost best friend for the first time. I hadn’t ever connected with a guy that way before.

But Wes had a girlfriend. So, when the week was over, he walked off the ship, unknowingly taking a piece of my heart with him.

Now, over a decade later, newly divorced, I’m the proverbial fish out of water. Dating has totally changed. Apps. Swipe left. Swipe right. Catfishing. Men my age want two things: twenty-five-year-olds—like my ex’s new child bride of a wife—or just a quick hook-up.

After a string of bad dates, I finally did something I never thought I’d do. I had a hot one-night stand with a really handsome guy I met online who didn’t even know my real name.

Turned out Mr. Fling is a big shot for my company’s newest client. And just my

luck, that client’s CEO is none other than . . . Wes Bergman.

Now I’m separated by one degree again from the man who stole my heart.

And Mr. Fling could destroy my chance of what I want most –

A Do-Over with Wes.

Excerpt

His hand slowly stroking up and down the outside of my thigh is what roused me from my dream state. It was so soft and tender that I was getting more and more turned on with every movement. With my eyes still closed, I enjoyed the sensation. It wasn’t until his lips started brushing my shoulder, that I was unable to stifle a moan, revealing that I was awake.

“Good morning,” his whisper was hoarse.

“Mmm, good morning.” I stretched my body against his and turned my head to see his face hovering over mine, before our lips met.

“Sleep good?”

“Surprisingly, I did. I was so exhausted. Sorry for passing out on you last night,” I apologized.

“I think we both passed out the moment our heads hit the pillows.” Wes’ hand had migrated from my thigh to my stomach, where he softly drew circles with his fingertips.

Rolling over to face him, I pushed my hair out of the way, silently praying my humidity enhanced curls didn’t make me look like a deranged housewife, scaring the erection right out of the man. Slinging a leg over his thigh, I instantly got my answer. The crazy morning coif was not a cock killer. Thank God!

“You’re a morning person, I see.” Hiding my smile was not a possibility.

“Yeah, I am,” Wes laughed, moving closer to me, his eyes filled with the unmistakable desire to become lovers, something I’d dreamed about on the deck of a windjammer long ago.

“You can wake me up like this anytime.” I needed to let him know it was okay. He’d said he’d take it as slow as I wanted it and what I wanted right now was a slow rhythm of him plowing into me. Hard.

“Are you hard to wake up?” He was pressed up against me.

“I think you’ll figure out the secrets to rousing me.”

“You’ve already figured out the secrets to arousing me.” His voice still had that sexy edge of morning roughness to it, making me want to skip all foreplay and have him inside me.

“I’ll bet you have a few more secrets I can discover,” I said against his lips, as I shifted the leg I had slung over him, pressing my heat and wetness against his already throbbing cock.

Wes groaned and I could feel his smile against my lips. “You know you’re going to make it impossible to make slow, sweet love to you.”

“Good, because I don’t want it slow and sweet.”

Wes flipped me onto my back, “I can easily accommodate your wishes. Are you on anything or do I need to…”

“We’re good,” I assured him.

“Yes, we are.” He kissed my neck, then swiftly pulled my tank top over my head tossing it to the floor. “We’re going to be really good together. Of that, I have no doubt.”

And I knew he was right. Being with this man had been so perfect from the night we met. We meshed with ease and the result was pure joy.

The warmth in his eyes and smile made my breath catch, and in that moment, I was flooded with overwhelming emotion at how much I wanted him. How much I’d always wanted him. It was more than lust, beyond the heat of the moment. Wes Bergman was the man I had always wanted, from the night we met. That was clear to me now.

“I vote we skip the foreplay.” I wriggled out of my underwear.

“You’re on.” His smile told me he was taking on the challenge.

“You’re in,” I gasped, my breath catching in my throat, surprised at the swiftness with which he filled my request.

Michel’s Review

Julie A. Richman is in a class by herself when it comes to romance.  Her speciality is creating magical romances between mature adults while still including the wonders of young love in it’s purest form.  The memories of what once was or could of have been if the world would of been in sync, are part of her special magic.  The youthful mistakes, decisions in the works, and life dictating it’s own hand take her characters in new directions that are beyond their control.  She adds layers of life experiences that allow her characters hearts to percolate for years, preparing them to grasp the epic love story that is to come later when they are completely ready for it.  She allows them to mature and become the best kind of individuals they can possibly be.  Along the way they gain wisdom, experience the good and bad in life, and become emotionally stronger people.  They learn the true meaning of sacrifice, giving of oneself, and loving unconditionally.  They learn that love is more than a word or an emotion in a heated moment.  It is the true gift in life. A gift that completes a person as an individual as well as a partner.

It’s refreshing to read a romance that I can identify with as a mature adult.  Life experiences are priceless and mold a person into something more than they could of dreamed about in their younger years.

Tara and Wes were each other’s “one that got away”.  They met on a vacation cruise and instantly connected on so many levels.  At the time they were in different places in their lives.  Wes was living in California and was in a relationship.  Tara was building her career in New York City.  Their lives were miles apart and heading in different directions.  What seemed like a slip of fate was only the beginning.  Fate had something else in store for them.

Almost two decades later, Tara finds herself a new divorcee , single parent to her teenage daughter, and pushing forty.  She is once again thrust into the dating pool.  A pool that has changed severely since she last swam in it.  The rules have changed.  It’s not just herself that she has to consider.  She has to put her daughter first and her own needs second.  The players in the game have changed.  Potential dates are no longer fresh faced young men with a boat full of dreams and the world unexplored.  They are experienced men with their own suitcase full of baggage.  The game itself has changed as well.  Clubbing and hanging out with friends is no longer the way to play the game.  Online dating sites are the way to go.  She’s a fish out of water.  Trying to survive in this new world of dating is like swimming against the tide.  There are a lot of sharks, guppies, and minnows in the pool.  After some disastrous dates and a really bad experience, she’s ready to throw in the towel once again.  That is until she crosses paths with Wes Bergman once again.  What could of been might just be what’s next.

Wes Bergman has changed from the charming young man to an intense successful CEO. His life’s journey has brought him back to New York and founder of a specialized clothing company.  When his company hires a new advertising firm it brings him back to the charming young woman he met years ago on a vacation cruise with his sister.  This woman has matured into a devastatingly beautiful, intelligent woman who still sparks his heart.  What could of been is going to happen.  It’s his second chance at happiness.  This time he’s ready and he’s going to hold on.

Wes and Tara discover more than love.  They discover completion when they are together. Fate is finally smiling on them, or so they thought.  Fate is once again going to throw them in the waters without a paddle. This time around they are experienced swimmers in the game called life.  Their life experiences are going to collide but they are also going to be their saving grace.

Without giving anything away, I can say Julie A. Richman brings so much more than swoon worthy romance to the table.  She brings very real life issues to the table.  She brings an awareness of how precious life really is.  It’s not always sunshine and roses. It’s how one deals with life that makes the difference.  Choosing to love is what matters most.

Julie A. Richman has once again floored me with her gift of storytelling, her compassion for mankind, her wisdom, and insightful observations.  She created a story that is very real and emotional.  It was a true pleasure to read The Do-Over.

The Fall Away Series – Book 4.5

Synopsis

New York Times bestseller Penelope Douglas introduces Quinn, younger sister to Jared, Madoc, and Jaxon, in the latest novella in the series that began with Jared and Tate in Bully….
Quinn Caruthers has several problems.

Her father, Jason, and her three older brothers, Jared, Madoc, and Jaxon.

Under the close watch of the men in her family, Quinn has found it nearly impossible to spread her wings–or even date–without them jumping in to hover. And when a family friend–several years older–from her childhood captures her heart, she knows they’re going to be a problem. Lucas Morrow is a man–experienced, sophisticated, and important. And knowing her brothers, he may as well be forbidden.

But Lucas left town years ago and shows no signs of returning. Quinn knows she shouldn’t wait for him anymore.

But then a package turns up on her doorstep with no return address and its contents reveal family secrets that threaten to turn Quinn’s world upside down. She’s never asked about the tumultuous path of her parents’ romantic history, but she soon learns their happy marriage had a very rocky and passionate start.

As she begins to see things around her with new eyes, Quinn will have to make tough choices about whether she’ll keep waiting…or finally go after what she really wants.
*Next to Never is a 60,000 word novella from Quinn’s point-of-view. It is NOT her love story. That will be a full-length novel eventually. This story deals with some family history, introduces the new generation, and catches up with the original couples.

Michel’s Review

The Fall Away Series by Penelope Douglas has been one of my all time favorites.  When I saw Next To Never release, not only was I surprised but also thrilled.  I thought the series was over until the next generation was ready to take over the pages.  Next To Never brings the series full circle and also introduces the readers to the next generation, who are screaming for their place on the pages.

It all begins with Quinn Caruthers.  Quinn is about to begin senior year of high school and hasn’t really committed herself to one thing.  She has always done what she’s been told, kept busy in all the extra curricular activities, and was basically a ” yes ” girl.  She is questioning her life and the choices coming in the future.  Her mother and father want her to attend a certain college and are encouraging her to go the extra mile to get in.  It’s not that she doesn’t want to go but she never thought about what other options she has.  What else is out there?  What does she really want to do?  One thing always seems to stand out when she thinks about it.  An abandoned garage on Main St.  This empty building has so much potential and needs to come alive once again.  Maybe she can change it’s future when she finally finishes hers.  Her life is full of questions and her dreams are unrealized. Her future is mapped out for her until something unexpected happens. She receives an  anonymous novel in the mail.  There is no return address.  The only clue she has is the postmark is from Canada.  Once she opens the book it’s going to change her course in life and her perspective on everything she thought she knew.

What begins as an intriguing forbidden romance novel evolves into something more.  The characters begin to take on a life themselves.  They begin to become more and more familiar to her.  By the time she finishes the novel she realizes she has known these people all her lives.  Their story is not what she believed it to be.  This novel not only changes her perspective on those she loves, it also inspires her to reach for the stars and build her own dreams.  It is the defining moment for her life.

Retreat

The Getaway Series – Book 1

By Jay Crownover

Synopsis

Every once in a while, you need to get away from it all.

I was a woman on the edge, shaken and shattered after a breakup that felt like it tore my entire world apart.
My best friend, sick of watching me drown in misery and melancholy, harassed me until I agreed to go with her on a week-long wilderness retreat.

She promised days spent bonding and getting in touch with our inner bad-asses. It was supposed to be all about the two of us roughing it and making do with the bare minimum. She assured me we were going to be pushed to our limits in ways that were unimaginable. Neither one of us could have ever guessed just how right she was.

Nowhere in the glossy brochure did it say anything about the fact I was going to have to battle the insufferable but deliciously rugged and sexy trail guide instead of the elements. The brochure also forgot to mention the part that warned when you left civilization behind, there was no place to pack your inhibitions and fears.

I was told that I would be facing a week where the only thing I should expect was the unexpected. However, no one mentioned that I was going to have to fight for my life…and my heart as soon as I ventured into the unknown.

I was a pro at hiding from my feelings but when it came time to face a real threat, one that could change everything, I learned I was more of a no surrender, no retreat kind of girl.

Retreat is a standalone novel, the first in the Getaway series which centers on the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women that dare to love them.
These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

Michel’s Review

Wow!  Jay Crownover stepped out of her element and delivered a fantastic romantic suspense layered with emotional passages.  This book was not only a romantic suspense, it was also a journey for a woman who is questioning everything about herself.  She’s angry, hurt, guarded, and fearful.  She has emotionally boxed herself into her little self absorbed world and sealed the lid.  She’s lost herself.

Leo’s best friend convinced her to come to Wyoming for a wilderness retreat.  One week spent on the trails, living off the land, and becoming one with nature.  This is not Leo’s idea of a good time but she’s willing to suck it up because she has been a miserable selfish friend and it’s time to turn that around.

Leo thought she knew what she was getting into.  In her mind she pictured the typical cowboys guiding their group and bonding around the campfire at the end of the day.  She envisioned easy riding trails and scenic views.  Her expectations were way off base.  The trail guides are not the typical cowboys.  The Warner Brothers are in a class by themselves.  One is grumpy and looks more like a model biker, one is friendly but reserved, and the other is sullen and quiet.  They are there to do their jobs and make sure their clients have the best experience communing with nature.

The entire trip starts off balance.  One of the brothers has to stay behind because of a family emergency. The grumpy brother, Cy Warner has to take over the expedition until his brother can rejoin them later in the week.  The trail group is not the greatest group of people to be spending a week with on the trails.  An entitled dysfunctional family from New York City that includes two smart mouthed teenagers, two city women that aren’t used to nature,  two oddball men who are completely stand offish to the entire group, and two guides that are pushing their limits.  It ends up that was the easy part of the trip.  What happens while they are on the trail is something no one could of foreseen, not even their experienced guides.  The peaceful retreat has turned into a dangerous endeavor forcing them to fight for survival.

Through all of this Leo finally faces herself, she conquers her fears, and gains new strengths she never knew she had.  She also finds what she thought was love was only an illusion.  Cy Warner has taught her to reach for more and give more of herself.

This book literally blew me away.  It was unlike anything Jay Crownover has written.  I was on the edge of my seat when the danger kicked up full throttle.  What made it even more intense was the reality of the situation.  This situation is something that could happen anywhere.  Jay’s vivid descriptions made the story come alive.

Leo was not my favorite character in the beginning.  As the book began to progress and Leo’s layers started peeling away, I began to see a completely different individual. I enjoyed witnessing her growth as an individual.  Her prickly personality masked the vulnerable woman hiding behind her fears.

The chemistry between Cy and Leo was sizzling.  Their verbal sparring and heated moments added the fire in this book.  There was the right amount of romance mixed within the events evolving throughout the story.

I am looking forward to reading more books in the Getaway series.  There are two Warner brothers screaming for their own stories.  They both deserve it after what happened in Retreat.
