Tina’s Review

*** ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ***

Lucille is looking for a little fun at the Annual Halloween costume bash she and her two best friends are attending. She recently moved to Washington D.C. after interning in Rwanda and taking a job with the local NGO. Chaz Browning is a photojournalist. He’s fresh back from an assignment from Pakistan and, at the last minute, decides he needs a little American holiday traditions.
They spot each other from across the room. She knows almost immediately who he is, even after nine years, but Chaz does not recognize her through her costume. Lucille is glad that he does not recognize her as the girl from next door that teased and tormented him all through childhood up to graduation.
~
Although the recognition was one-sided, the instant attraction was mutual. After an hour or so of give-and-take at the bar, they decided to go back to his place. She’d been adamant about not revealing her identity and only staying for a few hours of fun. He’d been determined to change her mind, wanting to keep her for as long as possible. Several hurtles were thrown in their path and eventually, his mystery girl slipped through his grasp. Like in Cinderella fashion, he’d lost the girl and could not find her anywhere.
Living only a few doors apart, Chaz and Lulu found themselves bumping into one another at a fairly regular rate. The sparks of attraction kept amplifying.
—–
Ms Kelly writes some very dynamic characters, it’s not hard to become emotionally invested in them. The main characters are very enjoyable, as are the secondary characters. The story flowed smoothly with excellent dialogue and interaction. The plot had enough dimension to keep it from feeling stationary. Overall, it was a sweet romance about childhood neighbors / frenemies that meet years later and discover that their adult selves recognize the deep-seated emotions from childhood may have been “more”. Second chances and forgiveness play a large role in the plot. A slight conflict was presented with wonderful resolve and good closure.

Synopsis

Sometimes before we fall . . . we fly.

One dark moment was all it took to turn twenty-four-year-old Dominic Kinkaide’s world black. On the night of his high school graduation, a single incident changed him forever, and he became a hardened man-famous in the eyes of the world, but tortured inside. Now all he cares about is losing himself in the roles that he plays.

At twenty-three years old, Jacey Vincent doesn’t realize how much her father’s indifference has affected her. She is proof that sometimes it isn’t one specific moment that wrecks a person, but an absence of moments. She tries to find acceptance in the arms of men to fill the void-a plan that has worked just fine for her, until she meets Dominic.

When jaded Dominic and strong-willed Jacey are thrown together, the combination of his secrets and her issues turns their attraction into the perfect storm. It could change their lives for good-if it doesn’t tear them both apart . . .

Kelley’s Review

Before We Fall by Courtney Cole takes you on an emotional journey as you follow the lives of two very broken people on the path to redemption.  In the beginning I did not like Jacey or Dominic.  At 20 percent of the way through this read I almost put it down.  I had a hard time identifying with these characters.  They were dirty and perverted and I had their path already plotted in my head.  I decided since I was reviewing this for Romance @ Random that I would continue reading the story.

Dominic Kinkaide has been dealing with horrible guilt for the past six years because he  blames himself for a terribly tragedy that was no one’s fault.   No matter what he does he can’t get over it.  He has decided that he is only worthy of sexual perversion and will not allow himself to get emotionally attached to anyone.  He has accepted that he is a monster and shuts everyone around him out of his life.  This makes him lonely, bitter, and unbearable to be around.

Jacey Vincent is working as a high priced scantily clad cocktail waitress as she puts herself through school.  She allows men to ogle her and grope her for tips.  She is one step up from stripping.  She looks at it as a job and the money is good.  She does not plan on doing it forever but what she does not completely realize is that her image gives others the impression that she is cheap and easy.

When Jacey meets Dominic Kinkaide at a party she is working, she is awestruck.  She can see that he is wrestling some serious demons.  Sparks fly between the two of them and Dominic is intrigued but blows her off like every other woman he comes across.  He does not believe that she will be any different than any of the women who want him just because he is famous.

I really thought I had this story pegged but boy was I wrong.  These characters possess deep dark secrets worse than you could ever imagine.  Their path to redemption is very rocky and emotionally gripping.  I was up until 1:30 a.m. reading because there was no way possible for me to predict what was going to happen next.  Courtney Cole is a masterful plotter and she really took this story twisted and turned it and then dropped a bomb that I never saw coming.  She also throws in a tiny paranormal twist in epilogue that brings the reader right back to the beginning of the book.  This book was so much more than I ever imagined it could be.  The supporting cast was written so well that I can’t wait to read each of their stories.  The phrase I think that sticks out for everyone in this read is “before we fall, we fly”.

My interpretation of this phrase is that when two people begin to fall in love they fly.  Everything is wonderful and they live in a bubble and have this feeling of euphoria before they fall deeply and madly in love.  You have to fly first and feel all that is good before you can truly fall in love taking the good with the bad.

I am really looking forward to reading more books in this series.

Club X Series- Book 2

Synopsis

Stefan March lives for a good time. Born into wealth, he sees everything in terms of what he can have, especially women. So far, life has denied him nothing and no one. When he meets his newest bartender, he instantly knows who his next conquest will be, but Shay’s not like the usual women he collects. To get her, he’ll have to be more than just the player he’s always been.

Shay Callahan is beautiful, determined, and intelligent. She’s got plans for her life, and they don’t include getting sidetracked by a man, and certainly not her wealthy player boss. Her job at Club X is for one thing—money to fund her education—but if she can make Stefan March see he’s not God’s gift to women, all the better. She never expects to find out there’s more to him than meets the eye.

As different as day and night, can these two see past who they think they are to find love?

Michel’s Review

I have to admit that I have never read any of K.M. Scott’s books. When the blog tour for Surrender-Club X came through my email, I was very intrigued with the blurb. I am always looking for new authors to add to my “must buy” list. K.M. Scott is undoubtedly on that list! I loved Surrender- Club X! It can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order.

The Club X series is based around three brothers that own a club where fantasies can come true. Stefan March is the youngest of the three brothers and the one with the most sullied reputation. He has earned the reputation of being a man whore that uses women without remorse. His older brothers are usually left to clean up his messes and make restitution for his escapades. His messes don’t stop him from moving on to the next woman, the next sticky situation, and the next notch in his belt. After all , he knows his looks and charm can land him any woman he wants whenever the whim hits him. He is a bad boy through and through and makes no apologies for it. He has never been turned down and always has his next target in sight. That is until Shay Callahan comes to work at Club X as a bartender. She wants nothing to do with Stefan. She is immune to his charm and good looks. She has her own agenda to focus on and that does not include the man whore boss. With quite a bit of taunting from his brother and a huge dose of sibling rivalry, Stefan has made Shay his next mark. He will do anything to win and show up his brother. The chase is on.

Shay Callahan is a smart woman. She has taken the bartender job at Club X to make enough money to fund her continuing education abroad in microbiology. She doesn’t have the inclination or the time for a self proclaimed man whore. She knows the game well. Stephan’s cockiness and arrogant attitude rub her the wrong way. She wouldn’t mind bringing Stefan down a peg or two and show him how the real game is played.

From the moment these two meet there is combustible chemistry between them. The game is on. As each player makes their move, the sexual tension escalates. The rapport and banter between the two is entertaining, witty, downright sexy, and challenging. It makes one wonder who is playing who.

The more these two are together the more bonded they become. Shay begins to see the true Stephan that he keeps hidden from the world. She sees a man that is much more than what meets the eye. Stephan finds that Shay is the one woman that can touch his soul like no other. These two will have to let go of their agenda’s and give their hearts to one another in order to win the big game.

K.M. Scott did a great job with Surrender -Club X. The story was fast paced, super sexy, with larger than life characters, entertaining dialoge, and panty dropping romance.

I highly recommend Surrender-Club X. I am looking forward to the next book in the Club X series!

Michel’s Review

Fight For Her Vol. 4 by JJ Knight is the final book in this series.  Maddie has once again left Parker without an explanation or goodbye.  She refuses to take his calls.  She has reverted to only allowing Lily to talk to her father on Thursday nights.  Everything seemed to be falling into place in their relationship.  They were finally communicating and working to find solutions for their problems.  They were on the right track to becoming a real family.  Everything was going great until the last fight in Vegas and the attack from past enemies.

Maddie has returned to New York and shut Parker out.  Parker is facing the biggest fight of his career.  This fight is for a title and could put him in the big leagues.  Without Maddie and Lily in his corner his career means nothing.  He is willing to give it all up for his girls.

Parker is determined to make things right in his life.  He sets out on a mission to fix all the wrongs that have affected their lives.  He intends to get Maddie’s homeless father off the streets, end his fighting career, and become the father Lily needs.

When the truth comes out about Maddie’s abrupt departure, it will change his recent decision.  A former friend has endangered his family.  He will stop at nothing to take down that friend and keep his family safe.  This time he has Maddie on his side.

The Fight For Her series has been an addicting series that showcased more than the MMA world.  This series focused on the importance of love and family.  It focused on becoming a better person and making personal sacrifices for others.

JJ Knight is a talented writer.  She incorporates romantic suspense, emotional angst, steamy love scenes, and gripping cliffhangers.  By the end of the series the readers have had a very satisfying reading experience.

I am looking forward to future works by JJ Knight.  Keep a watch out for JJ Knight’s next project in early 2015.  She will be writing as Annie Winters with partner Tony West.  The new series is called Vigilante’s Lover.  It is a spin off from one of the sexy characters in the Fight For Her series.  Jax DeLuca is going to rock our world, burn up the sheets, and redefine the meaning of safe house.  More to come….

Tina’s Review

Maxx Hughes is cajoled by her best friend, Erin, into being a ring side girl for a match one night in the hopes of obtaining a position as an event coordinator. She needs the job and feels the need to contribute to the bills and groceries as she lives with Erin; Erin’s brother, Luke; and their friend, Logan. She’s had a crush on Logan since childhood, but was denied and firmly placed in the “friend zone” years ago. She wishes he’d just see her as a desirable woman, not the frumpy friend.
Logan “Unbreakable” Kellar fights in these semi-legal events. He’s taken by surprise that his yoga pant-wearing, nerdy friend, Maxx, could transform into the sexiest siren of a ring girl that he’d ever seen. He’s always thought her curvy nerd look was on the sexy side, but kept her at a distance. She’s is calm in the storm, his rock, his anchor… but given his upbringing, he does not feel he can give her what she needs – what she deserves.

I’d been wanting to read BLIND and DEAF for a while now and then I won BLIND from Love Affair with Fiction in a giveaway! So here we go:

These are not full-length novels. They average less than 150 pages.
In an increasingly popular format, this story is written in the alternating first-person POV. There are a lot of mental asides that are sometimes directed to the reader, other times are just mental ramblings or inner thoughts. Her thoughts are more snark and insecurity and his are more volatile and self-depreciating. It’s a bit odd, a bit difficult to adjust to, and sort of makes Maxx and Logan seem a bit… mentally unstable. It’s kind of uncomfortable, the way it’s written, as if they are telepathically talking to you, the reader, while holding a verbal conversation and interacting with the others. The plot is solid, with great secondary characters that are truly enjoyable. There really was not any predictability, so I am pleased there, however the continual conflict was never resolved and the story does not conclude; it is left completely unfinished – which seriously bums me out.

Tina’s Review

The mental tirades of Maxx and Logan continue in this second installment of SENSES. It’s still a bit off-putting, but in the interest of “getting over it”, I’m going to do my best to ignore the chosen format and judge more on the characters and plot itself.
Best line? “Just because you lick it, doesn’t make it yours, Logan.” Loved it, such a current phrase thrown in with unexpected sass. The characters are well-written. Mostly enjoyable, but human. There are flawed personality traits and they don’t always do/say the right thing or make the best choices. Dean is a wonderful addition, especially in the way that he adds more dimension to Logan’s personality. I wish the shadowed back stories of C.J. and Erin as well as the kindling of Luke and Stuart would be highlighted just a little more. The flow of the book progresses smoothly and has enough dynamics to not feel stagnant; not an easy thing to do when you are reading novella-length books. Although, to be fair, these books do NOT individually have closure like a regular book would, it’s more of a serial: “to be continued”. Thankfully, there’s really no predictability. DEAF is just as open-ended as BLIND was; do NOT expect closure or resolve, you WON’T find it here.

Senses Series Book 3

4 starTina’s Review

After a colossal misunderstanding and some serious lack of communication, Logan and Maxx are once again ranting to the readers while trudging though the muck that is their misery. I have to say, the best line that made me laugh -out loud & uncontrollably – was “I don’t know what demons are eating you up inside, but I can tell by the way your Botox induced face is trying to wrinkle, they are something nasty.” Wow, that was fantastic snark, loved it! The side stories of C.J. and Erin as well as further developments with Dean continue in the background as Logan and Maxx still struggle to find their way through their trials and mishaps. Logan is more likable this time. While the plot flowed smoothly and was great, and some of the conflicts found resolve, there are still gaping holes left unconcluded… Once again, it’s to be continued in HUSH, coming out in December.

HUSH, which is part four, is due to release in December and so is SAVOR (a prequel). VITAL is the final part to the series and is expected to release in January. Since each book here is a continuation of itself, I am breaking from my normal format of writing independent reviews for each. It’s hard to create character introductions to characters you should have read by now. If you haven’t, you will be 100 percent, completely, no-doubt-about-it lost. And, given the length of these novellas, it would almost feel like an incomplete review if I were to do this any other way.

Come back in January 2015 for the second 3-in-1 review for this series!

However, when a new—and utterly delicious—neighbor takes up residence in the house that ruined her marriage, Pricilla fears that her careful world will fold faster than a deflated soufflé.

Trent Walker knows what he wants and his sweet, sassy neighbor is at the top of the list. He’s certain that the chemistry between them would be explosive, but Priscilla fears that an affair with him, however hot, could be a recipe for disaster.

Tina’s Review

*** ARC Provided by Author in Exchange for an Honest Review. ***

Recently divorced from her high school sweetheart, who was having an affair with the younger neighbor, all professional pastry Chef Priscilla “CeCe” Westcott wants is to get herself and her life back on track, but that’s not easy to do when she’s the poster child for “hot mess”.

A job transfer brings Trent Walker to town and he’s just rented the house next door, the same house that her ex moved into when he left her for the slutty neighbor. To say their initial meeting got off on the wrong foot would be a gross understatement.

First person POV from CeCe that, at first, feels clinical and too much like step-by-step, scripted narrative (much like in a play) but it loosens and warms quickly enough. There is humor and a quirk that makes you smile easily and laugh often. CeCe is a 24/7 Murphy’s Law victim that turns to alcohol when things go wrong. For being 31, she suffers from immaturity, too. Trent is devilish, he has a wicked humor and he’s not afraid to charm you given half the chance. The secondary characters are lively, vibrant and a joy to read. Ms. Hollyfield truly captures the essence of the small-town, busybody nosy old neighbor perfectly; I could not help but laugh, picturing my own mother as Mrs. Humphries. The plot is pretty full and takes some unexpected turns now and again, which is great. The predictability of the cause of major conflict between CeCe and Trent was predictable, but still climactic enough to keep me interested in how things would be resolved. The EXTERNAL conflict was completely unforeseeable, well done! The conclusion is well-covered and solid, leaving no holes or cliffhangers. Overall, I’d say it’s a fresh and fun read with good twists.

“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”

I turn in my chair and give Vera a curious look. Yet another English saying that I don’t know. “I’m afraid I don’t understand.”

She gives me a soft but tired smile and sits down on the arm rest. I immediately wrap my arm around her waist and pull her down into my lap, where she comes to a rest with a giggle, her hair obscuring the impish smile on her face. No matter where she is, I can never stop touching her and now more than ever I need her to relax, to feel safe, to know I’m going to get us out of this.

“Explain,” I demand. “Or I will punish you with kisses.”

She raises her brow. “Followed by punishment by penis?”

I shrug. “That can be arranged. Now, tell me my Estrella.”

She sighs and buries her lips into my neck. I can’t help the small moan that escapes from me, nor my hardness building beneath her plump, round ass. I close my eyes and fight the urge to pick her up and take her to the bedroom, the only other way I know how to make her feel safe and sated, the only way I know how to escape.

“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” she says against my throat, “is a saying. I don’t know where it’s from but it means, well, nothing is scarier than a pissed off bitch.” She pauses, sucking in her breath and I know she fears she’s said the wrong thing. “Sorry,” she quickly adds and I feel her body tense up beneath my fingers. “I didn’t mean that Isabel is a bitch.”

She is still so skittish over her words, the way she blurts things out, but it’s one of the reasons why I love her. I cup the back of her head with my hand and let the softness of her hair sink over me. “I know you didn’t,” I assure her. “And, well, she is being a bitch.”

“Can you blame her though?” she asks, her voice rising a pitch and when she pulls away from me, her eyes are wet. It breaks my heart. I’m getting tired of my heart breaking and I know that this isn’t going to change anytime soon. Every day there is another weight on us, another crack appears.

“No,” I tell her honestly. “I cannot blame her.”

A silence lapses over us, heavy like a wool cloak. It does this sometimes. What we’ve done, it coats us.

Finally she clears her throat. “She’s going to hurt for a long time,” she says. “She’s going to be angry. This isn’t going away. I thought everything was behind us now, that she’d move on. You’ve been divorced for a year, if she’s still this mad a year out…”

“She is mad because I am going back to Atletico,” I tell her. “She is mad because of the paparazzi, the way they are hounding us again. She is mad because she feels she is being made to look like a fool. If I had just stayed with my head down, she wouldn’t be doing this.”

“But you can’t live your life in fear, Mateo,” she tells me.

I smile at her and brush her sunset hair from her face. “And neither can you.”

She settles back against my body, sinks, conforms, melds. She is second skin. She is a part of myself I can’t bear to separate from. I pray I never have to. I pray we can survive whatever is coming our way.

And I can feel it coming, that tension, that storm rolling in the weeks and days.

I pick her up in my arms and for all her pillowy curves, she weighs nothing more than a feather. I take her down the hall to the bedroom, throw her on the bed.  She glows in the afternoon sun that streams in through our window and it isn’t long before we are both naked and I am climbing over her, pinning her arms above her head and drinking in her body like the most beautiful, decadent wine.

I will devour her until all of this is gone.

I will consume her until we are all that’s left.

I push inside her and let my hunger take over.

Robin’s Review

My sincere appreciation goes out to author Karina Halle for providing an advanced reader copy of Love, in Spanish. I am once again honored to provide my honest review.

Love, in Spanish is the new companion novel to the contemporary romance Love, in English. It’s a brand new story from author Karina Halle that offers a glimpse of characters Mateo Casalles and Vera Miles approximately one year after the events of Love, in English.

Karina Halle has created some impressive male characters, and she is exceptionally talented when writing from a man’s point of view. Dex Foray. Javier Bernal. Sage Knightley. Camden McQueen. And now, Mateo Casalles. Mateo is mature, responsible, a father who dearly loves his daughter. He wants to provide for those that he loves. Mateo is proud. Loving. Sexy. Territorial. Mateo claims Vera as his own. He sees Vera in his future. If you have read Love, in English you know this.

But circumstances have not been perfect for Mateo and Vera. They face problems which seem to be compounded by Mateo being a high-profile public figure. They are citizens of two different countries, struggling to overcome language and cultural barriers. Their fifteen-year age difference seems to be insurmountable. Mateo has a bitter ex-wife, the paparazzi is unrelenting, and they both have work-related issues.

If anything can go wrong, it simply does. For this reason, the tone of Love, in Spanish felt somewhat discouraging to me. But I also found it believable that a couple with this many differences is going to struggle with problems. It was how Mateo and Vera responded to these problems that felt real, emotional and true. This author’s words have a tendency to pull at reader emotions. I clearly felt the desperation and sadness of these characters through the writing. Karina Halle is a gifted writer. She has the capability of bringing a scene to life by combining random details with sensory descriptive words. The overall effect is extraordinary. Love, in Spanish is full of the same top-notch writing that her fans have come to expect. The writing just flows beautifully. For Love, in Spanish, Halle has earned a solid 4-star rating!

Michel’s Review

It’s interesting how two people can read the same book at the same time and walk away with different impressions and thoughts.  Robin and I both had the privilege of receiving ARC copies of Love In Spanish.

Love In Spanish is the sequel to Love In English by Karina Halle.  Love In English had mixed reactions from readers of the romance genre.  It’s subject matter, a forbidden love between an older married man and young free spirited woman rocked the norms expected in a romance novel.  This book did not condone adultery.  It was a story of two people that found  their once in a lifetime soulmate at the wrong time.  While Love In English was a beautiful love story, it was also brutally honest about the repercussions of an illicit affair.  It portrayed the ugliness of betraying a marriage, hurting all those that you love, losing the respect of your friends, piers, and general population.  It portrayed the death of a relationship and the grieving of that loss.  It was a story of picking up the pieces and moving on in life.  Moving onto the life that was meant to be lived and celebrated.  It was not an easy road and the characters wore their battle wounds with pride and regret.

Love In Spanish occurs one year after Love In English.  Mateo Casalles and Vera Miles have survived the initial shock that their forbidden relationship has rendered.  They are building a life together after tearing apart the lives they once lived.  The road is not easy for this couple.  They have a lot of obstacles to overcome before their relationship can be a true success.  These obstacles could destroy the beautiful bright shining love they have found with one another.

Mateo Casalles is a high profile individual.  He was a former soccer star and married into a very affluent family.  He was also a highly successful businessman.  When he left his wife for a younger Canadian woman it created a scandal that the paparazzi is exploiting.  Not only is his relationship with Vera being exploited, they are exploiting his relationship with his young daughter, feeding fuel to his ex wife’s grievances, and exploiting his new career.

If that isn’t enough to destroy his and Vera’s relationship, they have other things working against them.  They are from different countries and citizenship issues may pull them apart.  There is also the fact that their nationalities create a vast difference in their cultural upbringings and beliefs.

There is also the issue of their age difference and maturity levels.  Mateo is at the age where he is more settled, confident in his maturity, and has a firm grasp of what he wants in life.  Vera is still quite young.  She has not finished her degree and settled into a career, she has not thought about what she wants out of a lasting relationship, in fact she has never been in a serious relationship.  She is insecure with her inexperience.  Mateo is insecure with his age.

Vera and Mateo have a lot of obstacles to overcome.  They will have to learn what works best in their relationship.  They will have to choose how to handle all the negative press that is destroying their lives.  They will have to choose to fight for their love or let their relationship burn out.  Neither one is willing to let this happen.

Love In Spanish is a beautiful continuation of a difficult love story.  There is never a question of Mateo’s and Vera’s love for one another.  It is beautiful how they cling to one another when the world is tearing them down.

Karina Halle wrote an emotional love story that is brutally honest.  She did not skim around the ugly issues that comes in the aftermath of divorce.  She allowed these characters to suffer the ramifications of their affair.  This made their love more credible.  It also made their relationship stronger.  Both Mateo and Vera grew as human beings.  They also learned that love is worth fighting for.

I highly recommend Love In Spanish.

He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.

He speaks Spanish. I speak English.

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.

I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now.Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the damn truth.

***

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Spanish charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks.

Excerpt

As we pull our hands away, I grow nervous because now I have to actually kiss him. And not just kiss him, but kiss my first guy ever.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” I double check, wiping my palm on my jeans. “Because I don’t know what I’m doing.”

“I’ll show you.” He’s already leaning in, his intense aqua eyes zeroed in on my lips.

My heart dances like a crazy person in my chest, and I feel like I’m going to throw up. “Micha, I …” I trail off, sucking in a huge breath as his lips touch mine. My fingers tense around the chains and my whole body stiffens while I try to figure out what on earth I’m supposed to be doing. Clearly not just sitting here, frozen.

“Relax,” Micha whispers, putting a small bit of space between our lips.

Thinking the kiss is over, I let out a quiet, relieved breath. But the relief is short lived because, a microsecond later, his head dips forward and his lips brush against mine again. Only, this time, it’s different. This time, he slips his tongue into my mouth.

Oh, my God, his tongue is in my mouth.

Micha Scott’s tongue is in my mouth.

And I just touched my tongue to his.

Before I can even register what’s happening, we’re kissing. And I mean full on French-kissing. It goes on for what feels like minutes, our knees knocking against each other as Micha plays with my hair and continues to kiss me. Unfamiliar feelings prickle inside me, ones I’m pretty sure I’ve never felt before, and that terrifies the living daylights out of me. They make me feel so…

Out of control.

And Micha is supposed to be my stability.

I’m about to pull away because I can’t take the terror hounding inside me anymore when a loud crash echoes from nearby and we both jerk apart, wide-eyed and gasping for air. My cheeks start to burn and even Micha appears embarrassed, which has never happened before—at least, from what I’ve seen.

Seconds later, reality crashes over me.

Oh, my God, I just kissed my best friend.

Robin’s Review

I noted a couple of outstanding characteristics about Renee Carlino’s writing while reading After the Rain, her third full-length contemporary romance. First, each story written by Carlino is very distinct from her previous novels. And second, her writing flows beautifully – something which has never been more evident to me then when reading this novel. After the Rain is a story about second chances, about recovering from tragedy, and about hope.

Avelina Jesus de los Santos Belo grew up on a cattle ranch in Central California. After meeting Jake McCrea at a rodeo, she fell in love. Three short months later, eighteen year-old Avelina dropped out of high school and married her cowboy. Jake and Avelina settled on a ranch a hundred miles northeast of Great Falls, Montana, earning their living as wranglers. After a brief period of happiness, Avelina experienced heartbreaking tragedy. And now, years later, she is terribly misunderstood.

Nate Meyers is following in his father’s footsteps. After graduating from UCLA Medical School, Nate has become the youngest attending surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center, where his father is chief of staff. As a cardiothoracic surgeon, Nate has a promising future ahead of him. He works extremely hard and his career has always come first in his life. After making a poor judgment call during surgery, Nate becomes involved in a medical malpractice lawsuit. His father grants him a one month leave of absence from work, sending him to visit his Uncle Dale on a ranch in Montana to gain some perspective on life. In the most unlikely place, Nate meets the reclusive Ava McCrea.

The plot and setting of After the Rain combine to make this story so unlike any other contemporary romance that I have ever read. Although parts of this story are tragic, I feel the overall mood of After the Rain is one of quiet beauty. Much of this story involves scenes in nature, such as riding horses and being outdoors under the big sky of Montana. I had trouble connecting with Ava’s character, although I believe the reason that I felt this way had more to do with her circumstances in life. I loved the ending to After the Rain! Without giving away what happens, I feel the unique method in which Carlino ends this novel strengthens the story, really bringing out my emotions when I was reading! My overall impression of After the Rain is beautiful, favorable, earning Carlino a solid 4-star rating.

Michel’s Review

Renee Carlino has another success with After The Rain.

After The Rain is an emotional book that not only gives the main characters the love of  a lifetime, it is a story about second chances in life.  It’s a story of emotional growth and acceptance.

Two unlikely people come together and find more than love. Avelina Jesus de los Santos Belo has suffered a great loss at a very young age.  After the death of her father her family is torn apart.  When she meets the charming young cowboy at a rodeo, she drops out of high school and marries at the very young age of eighteen.  Her young love is her world until tragedy strikes and destroys her life.  Rather than grieving and moving on in life, Avelina is stalled.  She feels guilt for living, she feels responsible for the loss of her husband’s life, and she’s lost the only love she has ever known.  When Nate Meyers arrives on the ranch, she begins to change.  She realizes that no matter what, she is still the one who is living and that it might be time to let go and move on.

Nate Meyers has always wanted to be cardiothoracic surgeon.  He has focused his entire life on that goal.  He reached this goal at an early age after sacrificing much of his youth.  Now he has the career he has always wanted.  When a surgery goes wrong and Nate loses a patient, it is more than a professional loss he is feeling.  He suddenly is questioning his life choices and sacrifices.  He is questioning his career and purpose as a doctor.  A visit to the ranch and introduction to Avelina will change everything.

Nate and Avelina will find a new life that is waiting for them.  It doesn’t necessarily mean that this new life is with them together as a couple.  They will have an emotional journey that will forever change how they are as individuals.  It is a journey of emotional growth and learning what matters most in life.

Renee Carlino wrote a touching story that was mature, insightful, and beautiful.  I highly recommend After The Rain.

Tracey’s Review

Take one inexperienced girl, bent on putting her sheltered past behind her, and combine with not one, but two, mega-sexy guys that are more than happy to help her, and what do you have? You have a panty-melting, swoon-inducing, fan-yourself ’cause it just got REALLY hot in here read from Roni Loren.

Cela Medina may be inexperienced, but she knows that Ian Foster and his roommate, Pike, are absolutely able to help her with that. Sharing a bedroom wall with Foster has told her a lot about what makes the two men tick, and when the opportunity to learn what they have to offer first-hand presents itself, Cela is all in.

OMG, just OMG, where have I been? NOT UNTIL YOU was my first introduction to Roni’s writing, and I have no doubt that it will not be my last. This book had me alternately laughing out loud and fanning myself, because it was all hot action from the beginning. As well as scorching scenes and great dialogue, though, Roni has crafted a story that is immensely readable and more than just sex. Her characters are all too human, and, even given their not-so-ordinary proclivities, more like us than not. An interesting back story made me want to grab Foster and just hug him, and Cela is the perfect combination of strong and submissive, which made me really just want their relationship to work.

I can easily say that NOT UNTIL YOU is one of my most enjoyable reads this year, and give it 5.5 sweet, sexy, hot stars. I’m really looking forward to SO INTO YOU, and can’t wait to read Bret’s story.
