anything but mineAnything But Mine – Book 1

Rock star Logan King has come home to Winchester Falls for the annual Summer Festival. Only this time he’s hauling a helluva lot more baggage than a few suitcases and vintage guitars. His closet contains more than the usual skeletons…and if he doesn’t keep the door firmly locked, someone might get harmed. The specter of what haunts him forces him to turn away from anything more than one-night-stands.

Until Izzy and her topaz eyes finally give him a reason to try again.

Since moving to town Isabella Grace has found friends and a place to belong for the first time in her life. Running the Summer Festival is the perfect way to show how important her new community is. She just never planned on a whirlwind fling with a man too used to saying goodbye. Or to fall for a guy who has as many secrets as he does hit songs.

Logan is used to protecting himself, but protecting Izzy is all new territory. With everything that matters to him at risk, he refuses to let her get hurt—even if that means he has to walk away. For her own good.

Review

For Logan King, rock star and frontman for All the King’s Men, Winchester Falls, VA, represents home, a safe place away from the frenetic pace that is his life. When Logan returns to Winchester Falls to head up the annual summer festival, he’s not prepared for Isabella Grace. Isabella has made Winchester Falls her home, and herself a valued part of the community. In an effort to give back, she’s taken on the job of putting together the summer festival. When she and Logan meet, there are sparks and then some.

When I open a Taryn Elliot book, I know a few things for sure: I will be hooked immediately, I will fall in love with the characters, and I will love every single minute of the story. Every single one of these things is true of Anything But Mine, the first book in the When You’re Gone series. I started reading, and I could NOT put this book down. From the minute that I met Logan and Izzy, along with all the other great residents of Winchester Falls, I could not flip the pages quickly enough. I mean, hello, REALLY hot rock star. And, smart, strong, self-assured woman. This is a match made in heaven, and the heat between them is palpable. Taryn writes so realistically, and with such passion, that I could literally feel the chemistry between Logan and Izzy. Add in the back story of Logan’s and Izzy’s pasts, and the angst that still fuels him, and this is one heck of a read.

Anything But Mine is part of a trilogy, so, yes, there is a cliffhanger. And it’s one that will grab you and send you running for Bulletproof Weeks, the second book in the series, so that you can pick up right after the action in this book. I cannot recommend this book, or this series, or Taryn Elliot, strongly enough. She and her characters have quickly become some of my go-tos, and I happily give Logan, Izzy, and the gang 5+ ‘steamy, swoony, oh, my gosh, this book is on fire’ stars. Add it to your TBR and fall in love.

bulletproof weeksBulletproof Weeks – Book 2

Being a famous rock star for almost two decades means putting his life on display. But for the last two years Logan King has dealt with the uglier side of fame. When his stalker escalates to issuing veiled threats against the first woman he’s allowed in his life, Logan locks down and shuts Izzy out. His stalker isn’t just anyone—she’s as famous as he is with a financial reach that makes her infinitely more treacherous.

Falling for Logan King wasn’t part of Isabella Grace’s plans and their spectacular public breakup didn’t make it easy to move on. Whispers and pitying looks from people in her small town send her fleeing from the first place that finally feels like home. Her solace becomes her travel for work, but the niggling sense that someone is watching her follows her from city to city. When she begins to unravel the secrets that surround the man she still loves, she discovers her personal security detail and demands answers. And they all point to Logan.

Letting him back into her life comes with many more challenges–and rewards–than she could’ve ever dreamed. But loving a man like Logan comes at a dangerous cost. One that has a lasting effect that could echo into all their tomorrows.

Review

Following her very public break-up with Logan King, Isabella Grace has thrown herself into doing what she does best. Immersing herself in her business, Between the Lines, she doesn’t have the time to think about Logan and what they had. Although he’s left Winchester Falls for New York City, Logan hasn’t stopped making Izzy’s safety his top priority. Knowing how dangerous his ex can be, he will never stop protecting the woman that he loves.

After picking my jaw up off the floor at the end of Anything But Mine (When You’re Gone Book 1), I lit into this book like it was my job. I NEEDED to see how Taryn would resolve the way things broke down between Logan and Izzy. And, as ever, our lady does not disappoint. These two are just as magnetic as ever, just as hot as ever, and just as all-consuming as ever. I regularly fall in love with my book boyfriends, but, let me tell you, Logan is in a league of his own. Everything about him, especially the way that he loves Izzy, is swoony, sexy, and just, mmmmm….And Isabella is perfect for him, loving all of him, even the stuff that isn’t so easy to deal with.

As she does, Taryn leaves us with a heart-stopping cliffy, one that left me thinking, ‘Are you KIDDING me?!’ and hyperventilating. Even knowing that things could not be as easy as they appeared, the way that this one ends just wrecked me. Even so, I cannot wait for Edge of Forever, the third and final book of this trilogy. In the meantime, Bulletproof Weeks is a must-read, and gets 5+ ‘I’m still fanning myself, I have to have the next one!’ stars. Read these books now!

edge of forever

Edge of Forever – Book 3

One night gave her everything. One night almost took it all away.

Isabella Grace never had a place she could call home until she moved to Winchester Falls. When a romantic moment ends in pain and horror, Isabella must deal with the aftermath of one woman’s vengeance.

After tragedy rocks the small town, the people rally around its newest member, and Logan King, Bella’s rockstar boyfriend, is doing his best to help her pick up the pieces of her shattered life. In spite of the secrets and suspicion that have dogged their every step since the beginning, he helps her find her way back to herself in the midst of her heartbreak over all she has lost. But his unrelenting need for revenge is shaking the bedrock of the foundation of the love they’d only begun to build—and Bella isn’t at all sure they’ll get through it unscathed.

Or alive.

Review

I went into this book with my heart hurting, scared to see what the fallout would be following the devastating end of Bulletproof Weeks (Book 2). Tears, absolutely. This final book is the culmination of the build-up in the previous two, and Taryn does it masterfully. This is a true love story, a story of the constancy of love, of the refusal to give up when things get tough. Logan and Izzy are dealing with issues that would break other people, but Logan, especially, proves that he, that they, are stronger than the people that would drive them apart and bring them down. If possible, I love him even more. And Izzy, broken and bereft, rises to his challenge, and comes out of her heartbreak stronger than ever.

A storyteller to the very end, Taryn does a fantastic job of keeping up the mystery, and, I have to admit that I did not guess beforehand ‘whodunit.’ I could not have asked for a more satisfying wrap-up to this series, nor recommend it any more strongly. Five beautiful, rewarding, heartwarming stars for this book. If you haven’t done it already (what are you WAITING for?!), read these books!

Synopsis

Welcome to Destiny Falls, New York, home of Bomb Squad–an ice hockey team full of rugged military heroes. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has the team captain packing his bags for greener pastures, but saying good-bye to the woman who’d captured his heart is easier said than done…

After being wounded in combat, Brandon Theroux lives every day like it’s his last. He never could have imagined that the sleek mechanics of his prosthetic leg would open so many doors, including minor celebrity status as a fitness model and a well-earned reputation as a rakish playboy. The only door it hasn’t opened is the one to Harper Johnson’s bedroom.

Harper has too much self-respect to join the ranks of Brandon’s “carpe diem” conquests, but when she needs someone to keep the peace in the tavern she owns, Brandon offers his help–as long as she agrees to a very tempting trade. It isn’t long before the two realize that a deal struck between friends who can’t keep their hands off each other has the potential to be a whole lot hotter than either of them is prepared to handle…

Tracey’s Review

Harper Johnson and Brandon Theroux have what you might call a ‘complicated’ relationship. Harper, local bar owner, and Brandon, decorated war veteran and captain of the local hockey team, have spent years dancing around each other, constantly fanning the flame of their attraction to each other. When life-changing events arise in each of their lives, will the spark grow or quietly go out?

I started reading this book and I could NOT put it down. Melissa Cutler has taken a very real, very sobering subject, and woven it into a story about love, passion, and finding that person inside yourself that you’re truly destined to be. I absolutely felt that the ‘heavy’ subject matter only made Harper and Brandon and their relationship more real. They are working through things that many of us face, and their long journey to a place of self-acceptance, finding their bliss, and opening themselves to the reality that has been a long time coming is well worth the read. I am a sucker for a friends to lovers read, and when there is enough angst and growth to make it a little harder to get to that place, even better. The chemistry between Harper and Brandon is white-hot, but it’s the evolution of their relationship, the blossoming of a true friendship, that had my heart. And, I’m not gonna lie, the sexy time here, oh, my goodness, break out the fan! Saying that the love scenes are steamy is not doing this book justice, and Brandon might just be one of my new favorite BBFs. I loved seeing his growth as he realizes what will truly make him happy. And Harper’s strength, her journey to a place of true peace, is so uplifting, and a lesson in a follow-your-bliss, take no prisoners approach to life. The addition of a quirky, loveable, unique cast of supporting characters make for a group of folks that seem like a lot of fun to be around, and make me eager to read more about them all.

Game Changer is a book with plenty of heart, passion, and soul, and turned out to be a gem of a read that I couldn’t recommend more. I easily give it 5 stars, and look forward to reading more books by Melissa Cutler.

Michel’s Review

I absolutely love the Bomb Squad series.  This series not only gives the reader a sizzling hot romance, it also gives the reader a deep and meaningful story that is realistic. It touches on many emotions and insecurities that we all possess.  It taps into their greatest fears as well as their greatest triumphs. This series features the wounded heroes that sacrificed a part of themselves for our country.  Now they are home and learning to live with their losses.  They are trying to make a new “normal” in their lives.  They are trying to put the war in the past and move forward.  Each character has a story that is going to win the readers over.

Game Changer is a friends to lovers kind of romance.  Both Harper and Brandon fought hard to overcome their issues.  Their love for one another was astounding.

Once again Melissa Cutler has delivered another fantastic book!

Synopsis

Avery Yeung’s biological clock just went off early. Thanks to her family’s medical history, she’s running out of time to get knocked up. And the only guy within donating distance? Her overprotective—and irritatingly hot—best friend. So clearly she needs an anonymous donor…

Anonymous donor? Over Sheriff Drew Flannery’s dead body. While daddyhood will never be in the cards for a man with his past, Drew won’t let Avery shop for a “popsicle pop.” He’ll do what’s right for his best friend by doing his best friend. But only if they do it properly.

But there’s nothing “proper” about it. Between the bed, the kitchen counter, and against his squad car, Avery and Drew are having the hottest sex ever. They can’t get enough of it—or each other. And without knowing it, they’ve crossed the one line that could ruin their friendship forever…

Tracey’s Review

After learning that she has inherited a genetic trait that will make it hard to have a baby the older she gets, Avery Yeung has made the decision that she is going to be a mother. Right now. No matter that there’s no man in the picture, because once Avery makes up her mind, there’s no going back. Drew Flannery, town sheriff and Avery’s BFF since the tender age of seven, is not about to let Avery select the father of her child from an a la carte menu at some paternity clinic. Before he can stop to think about the wisdom of his decision, Drew offers himself to Avery, and life as they know it is about to get very real.

I really enjoy reading books from Entangled Brazen. They are spicy, sexy, and oh, so much fun, and this book definitely does not disappoint. Avery is a kick-butt, take no prisoners kind of lady. After finding out that both she and her sister are likely to suffer from the same health issues that took their mother from them at a very young age, Avery tends to live life to the fullest. Drew has been her partner in crime since they met as little kids, so the thought of him as something more has Avery a little flustered. Because, if this crazy idea works, then it could be the best thing ever, but if it doesn’t, then they each stand to lose their best friend.

This book was a quick read, because it was so entertaining, and just really darned sexy, but no less satisfying for the way that I sped through it. The chemistry between Avery and Drew is sizzling, and the whole ‘best friends to lovers’ history, one of my favorite tropes, just adds to it. Author Katee Robert has a way with dialogue, both between characters and in their own heads. Add in the great supporting characters, and this is a book that I would happily recommend. 4.5 sexy steamy stars for this one. Grab it, read it, love it; you will not be sorry.

By Roni Loren

In this erotically charged novella by the New York Times bestselling author of Call on Me, Nothing Between Us, and Not Until You two strangers take an asphalt-burning ride into the wildest night of their lives…

But he’s having trouble resisting the redhead with the smart mouth and the killer legs. So when Natalie’s night goes from bad to worse, there’s no way he’s letting her spend her birthday alone. He makes her a deal–he’ll take her home but not until the sun comes up.

Tracey’s Review

A girl’s 21st birthday should be a big deal. Romantic dinner, celebrating with her boyfriend, memories in the making. Finding herself with a broken-down car on the side of the road is not a good omen, and Natalie Bourne’s day just keeps getting worse. But life has a way of surprising us with gifts that we don’t even know that we’re looking for, and, before the night is over, Natalie will get the best gift of all.

I am a huge fan of Roni Loren. Her Loving On the Edge series is one of my favorites, so I jumped on the opportunity to read this standalone novella. Nice Girls Don’t Ride is an absolute treat. Full of sass, spunk, and some serious spine, Natalie is such a refreshing character to read. Although she’s been keeping her inner goddess under wraps in her current relationship, she’s about to come out with a vengeance, thanks to Monroe Hawkins, Natalie’s unexpected white knight. With his wit, his charm, and his bad-boy swagger, Monroe is much more than meets the eye. Sweeping in on his motorcycle to offer Natalie a night, and more, to remember, he quickly became an immediate favorite.Their instant chemistry, their snark, their openness with each other makes these two the best example of why NA can be so much fun to read.

‘Monroe walks over and swipes the phone out of my hand. “What’s Romeo’s name?”
“Hey, give that back.” I jump to my feet and reach for my phone.
But he steps back and holds it up. “Smile.”
I grit my teeth. “Give.It.Back.”
“Pissed and mean, even better.” He grins and takes a pic with my phone.
“What the hell?” I stalk toward him, but he backpedals until he’s behind the counter, scrolling through my phone.
“There it is, Caleb with the little heart symbol next to it,” Monroe says triumphantly. His thumbs fly over the screen, typing. “Hope…work…is…worth…missing…this.”
“Oh my God.” I lunge around the counter, but Monroe slides out of reach and shows me the screen. He hasn’t hit Send on the message yet, but the pic of me is there–cheeks flushed, eyes a little wild, and my cleavage on prominent display. I don’t look like myself. I look kind of dangerous. And hot. Go me.”

Although this is a novella, so shorter than Roni’s other books, I loved Nice Girls Don’t Ride just as much. It’s fast-paced, joyful, even when dealing with some darker moments, and plenty hot. The sexy moments between Natalie and Monroe are signature Roni, and absolutely fan-worthy. I could not have enjoyed this read more, and highly recommend adding it to your TBR. Five+ sexy, sassy, satisfying stars for this one. Grab it, read it, enjoy the heck out of yourself. You will not be sorry.

‘”It’s going to be amazing”–he takes one of my hands and puts it over his heart, right where his tattoo is–“because we’re chasing our bluebirds, Nat. And nothing feels better than that.”
I swallow hard. “Think we’ll catch them?”
He lowers his face, a breath away from mine, his palms cupping my jaw. “Yeah, I think we will.”
And then he kisses me, and any doubts I have left are lost in the rush of emotions.
This feels good.
This feels right.
This feels…like happy.
I may have even heard a bird sing.’

Happy Release + 5 Star Reviews: Under The Influence by L. B. Simmons

Under the Influence KINDLE
Under The Influence
By L. B. Simmons

Dalton,

I loved you once. A love I thought irrevocable. A love I mistakenly believed could transcend both time and circumstance. Under the influence of my dimwitted, naïve, traitorous heart, I became intoxicated with what I now know was simply a figment of my self-indulgent imagination. So drunk on the feeling, I couldn’t see what was right in front of my face. So foolishly enamored, I blindly followed my heart into the depths of an emotion that would ravage me.

Years later, I know now what I wish I knew then. I am stronger. Smarter. Tougher. I will not allow myself to be broken again.

I loved you.

I raged for you.

I wept for you.

And now, I’m letting you go.

Author’s Note: Under the Influence is the journey of two childhood friends that spans the course of five pivotal years in their lives. It is a story about their discovery of true friendship as it blossoms into first love, their experience of crucial sacrifice and ultimate betrayal, and their endurance of agonizing heartbreak on the way to finding lasting redemption.

Dalton POV:

All that remains is the orange in the sky and the sweet scent of the angel lying next to me. Nothing else.

We watch in silence as we always do until the sun finally sets, then both breathe out a long sigh before I turn to face her. “I have something for you. It’s not much, but I saw it and thought of you.”

Her eyes widen with excitement as an equally joyful smile spreads across her beautiful features. I reach into my pocket and pull out the item I spied just a couple of days ago, buying it as a gift for her birthday, but it turns out I really suck at surprises. Who knew?

Dangling the long strand of black beads in her face, an unexpected rush of anxiety races through my system. I’ve never given anyone anything. Ever. I find it extremely unnerving.

Her grin widens further as she extends her hand, uncurling her fingers and exposing her palm. I lower the bracelet and watch as it coils into her grasp. My eyes rise to meet hers and I swallow deeply, trying to rid the nerves constricting my throat. “It’s uh …They’re onyx—the beads. I read that they offer protection for the person who wears them. I just…”I clear my throat. “I wanted you to be protected even when I’m not around.”

Her smile is hindered as her teeth graze her bottom lip. I fight the urge to take that pouty lip in between mine, breaking my stare from her mouth and bringing it back to the bracelet before glancing back to her sky blue eyes.

She turns to fully face me, the bracelet still secure in her clenched hand. Her expression timid, she inquires, “Put it on me?”

I nod and slowly uncurl her grip, allowing my touch to linger on the soft pads of her fingers with each one drawn away. She shivers in response and I breathe a light chuckle through my nose, still amazed each time I elicit those involuntary reactions from her. Once the bracelet is pinched between my fingers, she turns her wrist and waits patiently as I hook the ends together. Releasing it, I watch as it slides gracefully along the skin of her arm to land across the bones of her wrist. My hand instinctively rises and my fingers trace its traveled path, raking over the bracelet as I clench her hand in mine and press a soft kiss in the center of her palm.

Her breath shudders before she whispers, “I love it, Dalton. It’s…perfect. Thank you.”

I feel my face warm with her compliment, so break my eyes away from her to focus on the stars. After a couple of moments of peace-filled silence, I inquire, “If you were a color, what color would you be?”

Taking her eyes away from the bracelet, she giggles and twists to look at me. “What color would I be?”

I nod. “Yeah…”I stall, stunned with my need for honesty. “It’s just, sometimes I feel like a chameleon, you know? Forced to change my colors based on where I am in my life.”

I release a weighted breath. “Lately it feels as though I change them so often, I’m nothing more than a fucked-up version of an impressionist painting.”

Glancing to the side, my heart lurches as she crinkles her nose in confusion, my absolute favorite of her expressions. My eyes linger the light scattering of freckles on the bridge of her nose before once again seeking comfort in the obscurity of the night sky. “To those far away, I project a solid, recognizable image. But in reality, I’m comprised of nothing but a series of angry, incoherent brush strokes in every color imaginable. Disjointed.”

I twist my neck and pin her with my stare. “Broken.”

Her mouth dips at the corners before she turns on her side and tucks her hands under her cheek, her blue eyes sincere. “Do you think Renoir and Monet didn’t know what they were doing? That they didn’t purposely place each stroke of their paintbrush in order to create their envisioned masterpiece?”

She tightens her gaze. “You are a work of art, Dalton. Your own masterpiece, regardless if you choose to acknowledge it or not. Every experience that paints your picture is a stroke made just for you. Each one of them is essential in order for you to grow, to learn, and to teach.”

She shrugs her shoulders. “You ask me what color I would be? Well, I would be every single color I could because to me, those colors are emotions. Feelings. And life would mean absolutely nothing without the many colors that surround us. The many … experiences we live through that propel us forward into the people we are meant to become.”

Tracey’s Review

Dalton Greer and Spencer Locke have been best friends since they were very young, seeing in each other a safe place, the other half to each other. But Dalton is hiding the truth of his life from Spencer, a life that will ultimately bring devastation and division in its wake, and will test the love that has grown between them.

What makes a book a 5-star read for me? It has to grab me from the minute I start reading, to be a read that I can’t put down, that keeps me from doing anything else until I finish. And it will be the book that evokes emotion, that brings out all of the feels, running the gamut from joy to tears to angst. Under the Influence has all of this and more.

OMGoodness, L.B. Simmons, you’ve gone and done it. Nine percent into this book, and I was crying. You had me for the duration, and I had only made it through the first couple of chapters. I was hooked on Spencer’s and Dalton’s story from the very beginning, and it just never stopped. Both Dalton and Spencer have experienced the worst that life has to offer a child, and so find themselves irrevocably drawn to each other. But while Spencer has been able to move forward, Dalton has hardened himself, not allowing himself to love anyone.

“I find myself utterly fascinated, awestruck even, that there are people actually capable of truly loving someone without wondering when and how they will be betrayed. However, the knowledge of their existence also saddens me because the cold reality is, I will never know that type of love.”

Dalton breaks my heart. Capable of so much more than he has allowed his circumstance to dictate, he has closed himself off from feeling anything for anyone, except for Spencer, and for his friend, Rat. Just as he allows himself to admit his feelings for Spencer, he is faced with the ultimate loss, a loss that will completely alter the course of his, and Spencer’s, life. And Spencer shines, just beautifully exemplifies what true love is all about, in accepting Dalton, with all of his flaws, and loving him, perhaps more, because of them.

Under the Influence is ultimately a story about facing our demons and emerging stronger on the other side. L.B. Simmons has done an amazing job of crafting a book filled with characters that are flawed, yet redeemable, capable of love even when they don’t realize it, and stronger than the sum of their fears. This is absolutely one of the best books that I have read this year, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Filled with joy, pain, intrigue, and a healthy dose of passion, Under the Influence gets 5+ ‘I can’t put this book down to save my life’ stars from me. Do yourself a favor and add this to your TBR.

Michel’s Review
Once again L. B. Simmons has surprised me.  After reading the synopsis for Under The Influence, I had formulated an idea of what this book was going to be about.  When I dove into the story I quickly realized that this story was much more than I expected. It was a complete surprise!
One choice, one decision, one moment in time can forever change your life.  It can send your life into a new direction.  It can lead to new opportunities or it can hold you imprisoned in a world you didn’t understand.
Dalton and Spencer have been friends since their early teens.  The two have a deep connection to one another.  Spencer is everything good.  Dalton needs her goodness. But he made choices at an early age that guarantee that his life is going to be anything but good.  To protect Spencer from his ugly life he will make choices that will break both of their hearts.
Dalton made that choice.  He never knew that choice would keep him from the woman that is the light in his world.  He never knew that he needed someone when the sun set at the end of the day.  He never knew he could love.  He never knew what it felt like to be loved.  That one choice could destroy everything.
I am not going to say much more about the book because this is one each reader needs to experience themselves. The story is captivating, emotional, and fast paced.  L.B. Simmons has once again delivered a beautiful story of love and redemption.
I highly recommend  Under The Influence by L. B. Simmons

Synopsis

One bucking bronco. . .

Oklahoma ranch hand Tyler Jenkins is too young, too sexy, and too damn wild to be tied down by any single woman–for more than a few steamy hours. . .

One hard-working widow. . .

Widowed rancher Janie Smithwick is too busy paying off her debts to play rodeo with a reckless young cowboy like Tyler–no matter how hot he gets her. . .

One midnight ride they’ll never forget. . .

As a rule, Janie should be dating a man her own age, like her handsome neighbor Rohn–not the twenty-four-year old ranch hand he employs. Tracey’s Review

When ranch hand and bronco rider Tyler Jenkins decides to hit the local bar for a good time, his plans do not include beating a hasty retreat to prevent bodily harm. And the last thing that young widow Janie Smithwick expects to find in the back of her pick-up while on a trip to the nearby lumberyard is a hot young cowboy in a state of undress. At first glance, these two have little in common, but they will quickly find out that opposites often attract.

There are plenty of books out there with older men and younger women making a love match, but I’ve not come across nearly as many where the woman is the older of the two. This alone made me excited to read Midnight Ride by Cat Johnson. Janie is no young unschooled girl, unfamiliar with the ways of the world. She has loved and lost, and is doing the best she can to carry on with her life. When Tyler literally comes crashing into her world, she sees a charming young guy and not a prospective lover. But for all his youth, Tyler knows a great thing when he sees it and sets about his pursuit of Janie with complete dedication. I mean, really, here is a hot, hard-working, big-hearted guy, smitten with her and unwilling to let her deny their connection based on their age difference. I found myself cheering Tyler on and alternately grinning and fanning myself as their relationship unfolded. And I really appreciated the way that Cat wrote the characters, especially Tyler, with more layers than we would expect. It was refreshing to see a younger man that knows what he wants and is unafraid to do what it takes to grab it. Janie was very relatable, feeling all of the things that a woman dating a young and attractive man would realistically deal with. With a great cast of supporting characters that made me laugh out loud at times, Midnight Ride was an absolutely enjoyable read, and I am looking forward to seeing more of these characters. I can’t wait to read Midnight Wrangler, Rohn’s story, and I happily recommend this new series, giving it 4+ sweet, sexy, feel-good stars.

Tracey’s Review

This second book in the What the Lightning Sees trilogy picks up immediately following the action in Part 1.

Now that she and Jake are no longer together, Haven is doing her best to get back to life as she does it best, focusing on furthering her career and spending time with her brother and best friend. Jake, missing Haven, but unable to get through to her, is prepared to throw himself into his next business venture, one that will take him away from London, and from Haven.

I have been waiting for this book since I read ‘The End’ in the first book in the series. Waiting to see how Louise would bring us back from the ‘Oh, my goodness, she didn’t!’ ending. Waiting to see where Haven and Jake could go from how things left off. Well, Louise is awesome, and has seamlessly crafted a second installment that answers all of my questions. Haven, by her own account, is no good at relationships, having learned early on not to get too attached to people. And Jake, as his sister Beth so eloquently points out, is no pro at commitment. But what is true about both Haven and Jake is that they desperately want each other, and just have no idea as to how to go about it. I loved seeing them work their way back to each other, despite all their quirks and snark, finally ending up where they want to be.

Now, the hardest part: waiting for Part 3 after another doozy of a cliffhanger, one that surpasses the ‘Are you kidding me?!’ ending in Part 1. In the meantime, I can only say again how much I am loving Haven’s and Jake’s story, and give this book 5 sexy, steamy, ‘oh, my gosh, you’re killing me’ stars.

Tracey’s Review

A night in jail has left Aedyn Cumberland angry and determined to leave Granger, Iowa, and all the memories of his past in his rear-view mirror. But as he tries to forget home and the betrayal by Lauren Mitchell, Aedyn finds himself unable to stop thinking about the woman that he loves.

Driven By Destiny is the second book in the AEDYN series by Eve Carter. I had not read the first book, and felt like I was missing out on the backstory with Aedyn and Lauren, so I do suggest that you read them in order. That being said, I enjoyed this story. It is fast-paced and full of action, not to mention some seriously hot scenes between Aedyn and Lauren. I was glad to see Lauren finally stand up to her bully of an ex and be strong enough to leave her old life behind to pursue her dreams with Aedyn.

There is more to Aedyn’s and Lauren’s story beyond the ending of Driven By Destiny, so this book ends on a cliff-hanger. It was well done, though, and left me wishing that I had Saved By Destiny (Book 3) ready to dive into. As it stands, I give Aedyn and Lauren 4 steamy stars, and look forward to the speedy of arrival of the ending to their story.

Heather Morrison wants to become a country music star, and she is not going to let any man get in her way. She’ll gladly take their money as a dancer at

friend’s brother, a man who once called her too hot to trot, is the one who comes to her rescue.

Zack Taylor has life by the balls. He’s at the top of the game as a bull rider, owns a rough stock herd which is his retirement plan, and has a life plan

“We’re having a threesome,” Zack announced with a grin.

Heather was comfortable with her battery-operated-boyfriend, and maybe that would help them transition to the big show. And he was also curious what he had
to measure up to. He’d never actually used one before himself, he liked doing things the old-fashioned way, so this would be new for him too.

Heather shot up to sit and glare at him. “I don’t think so, cowboy,” she said, scooting toward the foot of the bed. Zack grabbed her arm, and she tried to
pull away.

“With Bob,” he clarified, laughter bubbling in his throat. “Where do you keep him?”

“Oh!” she said, then her eyes narrowed. “Really?”

“Really,” Zack confirmed.

Heather huffed a breath as she collapsed on her back on the bed. “You had me scared there for a second.” The tremble in her voice made him sorry he’d
teased her.

With a growl, he laid beside her and put his arm over her waist. She looked at him, and he held her gaze. “I will never do anything to scare or hurt you,
Heather. You’re still in control, angel. Always in control. Do you understand?” She nodded, and he kissed her forehead. “Now where does Bob sleep?” he
asked, with a laugh, trying to get her comfortable again.

“In the nightstand drawer,” she replied with a giggle. “He has a nice, comfy velvet sleeping bag in there.”

“Only the best for Bob,” Zack said. He rolled to the edge of the bed, sat up and pulled open the drawer. Fishing around blindly, his pinkie brushed velvet,
and his hand closed over a very small pouch, which confused him. “Bob’s awfully small,” he commented pulling out the pouch to loosen the strings. He
emptied the small silver bullet and rubber ring out into his hand and was even more confused.

“Bob is a vibrator, not a dildo. That’s in the closet, because I kind of bought one that was a little too big.” She rolled up behind him, then sat up to
take the vibrator from his hand. Shoving it into the rubber sheath, Heather slid it onto her forefinger, and wiggled it. “Voila—instant orgasm. No man
needed,” she said smugly.

“Yeah, but how will it be with a real man behind the controls?” Zack asked, sliding the rubber band from her finger to put it on own. He wiggled it under
her nose. “Put on your seatbelt, baby—Bob is on the bus, but Zack is driving it to O-town.”

4.5 Star

Tracey’s Review

Heather Morrison’s life is about to change. An aspiring singer, Heather is on the verge of finally getting her chance at the big time, but just one moment changes everything. Zack Taylor is just where he wants to be. At the top of his game as a rodeo bullrider, life couldn’t look better, but trying to do the right thing has altered his course completely.

Too Hot To Trot is the third book in the Cowboy Crazy series by Becky McGraw, and is the same enjoyable read that I have come to expect from Becky. Heather is a spitfire, relying only on herself after years of having no one else to help her. She will do whatever it takes to keep her past buried, and whatever she needs to get by. When circumstances arise that threaten to reveal what she’s worked so hard to overcome, she’s in need of a helping hand. When that helping hand ends up being Zack, in need of some help himself, neither of them is expecting where things will lead.

Becky is a master of the alpha man meeting his match in a strong woman. Zack is completely unprepared to be bowled over by Heather, and watching it happen is entertaining, hot, and romantic. And Heather gives as good as she gets, but seeing her finally let down her guard enough to trust Zack is heartwarming and swoon-inducing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book that is by turn funny, dramatic, and downright sexy. 4.5 sassy, steamy, can’t turn the pages quickly enough stars for Becky McGraw and Too Hot To Trot.

Excerpt:

Some women always managed to get it right. To make the right choices, to pick the right man, to nail this crazy thing called life. Meg Thompson, on the other hand, managed to end up single and pregnant. But she couldn’t regret the baby growing inside her, and from now on, she was determined to get things right.

She pulled on her favorite pair of jeans, tugged them up over her hips, and unsuccessfully attempted to close the button. She grunted and lay down on the bed, pulling the sides closer together but no luck. She wriggled, sucked in a deep breath, and tried again, only to end up huffing out a stream of air in frustration.

“Didn’t these fit just last weekend?” she asked herself, peeling the denim off her legs and tossing them onto the floor with a groan.

She glanced down at her still-flat stomach, placing her hand over her belly. “How could something I can’t see or feel cause so much upheaval in my life?” And how could she love the baby growing inside her so much already?

A vibrating buzz told her someone was sending her a message. She checked her phone.

Lizzy: Almost ready?

Meg sighed. Her best friend, Elizabeth Cooper, was due to pick her up in ten minutes. Girls’ night out. Or, in Lizzy’s words, hookup night and Meg’s last chance for a hot, no-holds-barred fling before she started to show and her sole focus became being a new mom. Meg was up for girls’ night, but no way would she be picking up a stranger for a one-night stand. Her days of choosing the wrong men were over. Mike was the last in a long line of sucky choices. So not only didn’t she trust her judgment when it came to the opposite sex, it no longer mattered. She was finished relying on men to define her or make her happy.

“Right, baby?” She patted her belly and headed to her closet for a pair of elastic-waist leggings.

* * *

Meg and her friends settled into their seats at Mel’s, a popular spot for casual drinks after work and on the weekends. Mel’s was a dimly lit bistro with a wood-fired oven and grill in the back, dark mahogany-looking tables throughout, and a funky bar where people gathered. Meg loved it here.

She waved to the waiter, who stepped over to their table.

“What can I get you ladies?”

The girls ordered alcoholic drinks, and the good-looking waiter turned to Meg.

“I’ll have a club soda. With a lime.”

“Going for the hard stuff, I see.” He winked and scribbled down her order.

Meg smiled. “Designated driver.” Which wasn’t a lie. Lizzy might have picked her up, but Meg would be the one driving home.

She glanced around at the women she’d ignored for a long time in favor of her asshole ex and, unfortunately, her baby daddy. She was grateful these women were here for her now because Meg had a bad habit of dropping friends in favor of men. Men she looked to for the love and acceptance she’d never received from her own father she barely remembered. Meg sighed and rested her chin on her hands. Her childhood memories included a string of Alicia’s boyfriends who came and went from her young life.

Her mother had set a pattern Meg unconsciously followed. First she’d latched on to Dylan Rhodes, the one and only good guy in her life. He’d been her high school boyfriend and her rock until they broke up before going to college, and then Meg began emulating her mother’s taste by choosing men who always took advantage one way or another.

Luckily she and Dylan had reconnected when they’d moved back to Miami years later, but Meg had over-relied on Dylan instead of standing on her own two feet. It took Dylan falling hard for another woman to wake Meg up to her too-needy ways. Dylan was her friend, but he was now Olivia Dare’s husband. And Meg was determined to be independent. Everything the way it should be.

“Earth to Meg.” Lizzy waved a hand in front of her eyes.

Meg blinked, startled. “Sorry. Just got lost there for a minute.”

“Nowhere good, from the look on your face.” Lizzy tilted her head to one side, her long blonde curls falling over her shoulder. “Everything okay?” Her friend studied her, her brown eyes soft and concerned.

Meg smiled. “Couldn’t be better. I was actually thinking about the changes I’ve made—that I’m determined to keep making in my life. And it’s really good to be out with you guys,” Meg said, meaning it.

“It’s great to be out with you too,” Lizzy said.

The waiter stopped by the table and passed out their beverages. Meg took a long sip of her cold soda, appreciating the way it eased her dry throat.

“Well, you must be doing something right because you’re glowing,” Lizzy said.

“It’s the pregnancy hormones,” Meg muttered.

“No, seriously. You look beautiful,” her friend insisted.

Meg smiled at her. “Thank you.”

Allie Mendez, the office secretary and the third woman in their posse, slipped her cell into her purse and leaned closer to join the conversation. “Maybe I should get myself pregnant, because Lizzy’s right. You’re gorgeous.”

Meg blushed. “And you two need glasses.”

“Not if the guys at the next table are any indication. Look. The blond one can’t take his eyes off you!” Lizzy said, her voice rising in excitement.

Oh no. All Lizzy needed was a target and she’d be aiming Meg his way all night. “I’m sure he’s looking at one of you. Not the pregnant woman in the elastic-waist pants.” Lizzy and her blonde beauty or Allie and her olive skin and luscious curves attracted men wherever they went.

“You must not have looked in a mirror before leaving the house,” Allie told her, a frown on her pretty face.

“Oh, look! He’s coming this way. Now remember. There’s nothing wrong with getting yourself some before your life gets serious.” Lizzy nudged her arm.

“I don’t want some,” Meg muttered. “If he’s so hot, you should—”

“Hi, ladies,” the man said, bracing an arm on the back of Meg’s chair.

“Hi!” Lizzy said too brightly.

“My friends and I would like to buy you all a drink.” He spoke to the table, but his eyes were on Meg.

She shook her head. “We were just having a private convers—”

“We’d like that,” Allie chimed in.

“Mind if we join you then?” he asked, making Meg wonder if he was dense, oblivious, or just that ego-driven.

In response, Lizzy slid her chair away from Meg, making room for the other man to sit. Which, after grabbing his chair and pulling it over to the table, he did. His pals joined them too.

Meg shot her friend an annoyed look.

“Give him a chance,” Lizzy mouthed behind the man’s back.

Rob, Mark, and Ken, they said their names were, as conversation began to flow. Ken was the one closest to Meg, and with his light hair and coloring, he definitely resembled his Barbie-doll namesake. Even if she were interested in a hookup, a preppy man who liked to talk about himself wouldn’t be her choice. She disliked his wandering hands even more.

He brushed her back.

She stiffened.

He sat forward so their shoulders touched. She shoved her chair in the opposite direction.

Somehow he ended up close beside her again, his thigh touching hers.

She was all too ready to go home, but her friends seemed to like the guys they were talking to, and she didn’t want to ruin their time by being rude to Ken. She wouldn’t leave with him, but she’d be pleasant while they were here.

“So what do you do for a living?” he asked.

“I’m a kindergarten teacher.”

He blinked, long lashes framing green eyes. “That’s … brave.”

“Don’t like kids?” she asked, none too sweetly.

He fake-shuddered. “Not for a good long while. But you must have a decent pension plan?” he asked, back on the subject he liked best. Ken was a stockbroker and investor, and soon she found herself listening to all the ways she could save more money by investing with the best of the best. Him, of course.

She hid a yawn behind her hand, and when her bladder informed her she needed a trip to the restroom, she nearly groaned out loud in relief.

“If you’ll excuse me, I need to go … freshen up. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” Meg rose and Ken followed, helping her pull out her chair.

Allie met her gaze. “Gentleman,” she mouthed in approval.

Meg swallowed a groan.

“I’ll be waiting,” Ken said as she walked away.

“Oh, please don’t be,” she said to herself, making her way to the bathroom at the far back of the restaurant.

She spent a long time in the restroom, checking her phone, swiping some gloss on her dry lips, and washing her hands, twice, in her effort to stall returning to the table.

When she did, she paused by Lizzy’s chair and whispered in her friend’s ear. “I’m going to bail. I’m not up to this. I’m really sorry. Will you be okay driving?”

“Of course. I barely had a sip. But I can leave and take you home.”

She shook her head. “No need. You seem to be hitting it off with Mark. I can get Uber,” she said of the car service in most cities, including Miami.

“I’d be happy to drive you,” Ken said.

She hadn’t realized he’d left his seat and had overheard them.

“No, really. Stay and have fun. I’m just not feeling too well.” Which was a lie, but it was nicer than go away, I’m not interested.

Which was ironic, since not too long ago, Meg would have been all too willing to see where things went with a guy who showed her any interest at all. Maybe the baby really was changing her, making her more self-reliant and aware as well as giving her better taste in men.

“Then you really shouldn’t go home alone,” Ken said, grasping her forearm.

Oh no, he didn’t. She pinned him with an annoyed glare. “Let. Go.” And what was it about her that attracted assholes anyway? she asked herself, as she tried to extricate herself without resorting to insults or calling management.

Lizzy jumped up from her seat just as the jerk released her arm, and a familiar voice reverberated in her ear.

“Touch her again and you’ll answer to me.”

Michel’s Review

When the father of her unborn child proves to be one more in a string of bad choices in the man department, Meg Thompson decides that she’s ready to do things on her own terms. Pregnant and alone, she’s determined that she can take care of herself. Scott Dare has been burned in love. Having faced the ultimate betrayal at the hands of his ex-wife, he has no intention of falling for what he sees as the myth of happily ever after.

I am a long-time fan of Carly Phillips and her DARE series. Dare To Hold is the sixth book in the series, and, once again, Carly has another winner on her hands. I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Meg and Scott evolve. Meg realizes that tying herself to less-than-desirable men is a pattern for her, and is trying very hard to change. Scott, like all of the Dare men, is one heck of an alpha, and makes no bones about his desire to be with Meg. Having seen firsthand what she is dealing with with her ex, he is not about to let her handle things on her own. The dynamic between the two of them makes for some serious sparks and sizzle, and, in typical Carly fashion, more than a little uber-sexy time.

These books are always quick reads for me, for no other reason than that I cannot stop once I pick them up, and Dare To Hold is no exception. The plot moves quickly, and the presence of the entire Dare clan feels like visiting old friends. I am looking forward to getting Avery Dare’s story in Dare To Rock, but in the meantime happily give Dare To Hold 5+ ‘super-sexy, you really need a fan to read this’ stars.
