Michel’s Review

All Wound Up is the tenth book in the Play by Play series by Jaci Burton. This is one of my favorite sports romance series and it never fails to disappoint. Jaci Burton has this special magic that brings her characters to life. The added bonus that features a professional athlete makes this series score high.

Tucker Cassidy is the sexy pitcher for the Rivers. While he is fantastic on the mound he is not so successful in the romance field. It becomes quite obvious when he tries to let his ex girlfriend down at a party and ends up with a knee to the groin. Rather than making a quick exit, he is singing soprano. A man’s worst nightmare and greatest pain. When the lovely doctor checks him out and declares his bat & balls are in order, he is smitten. The only problem is Aubrey is the team owner’s daughter. Between her father and her career, she seems like the impossible catch.

Aubrey is very focused on her career. She’s really not interested in dating. She is determined and very smart. To top it off, she’s quick witted and knows how to handle a player. When her friends encourage her to give Tucker a chance, she reluctantly does. She is in for a whole new game and her focus is going somewhere unexpected.

Aubrey and Tucker had a magical chemistry. Between their hilarious banter and red hot chemistry the reader is counting every play. Both are dedicated to their careers but need something more. They need each other for completion.

I fell head over heels in love with Tucker. He had a quirky sense of humor and creative dating skills. A guy who is willing to take a girl to a cooking class on a date because they are both cooking impaired is truly one of a kind.

This book has the right amount of humor, sexual tension, relationship tension, and steamy romance. Jaci Burton has a way of bringing her characters to life. They jump off the pages into the readers hearts.

I can’t wait to see who’s on deck in the next Play by Play book.

I highly recommend All Wound Up by Jaci Burton. It can be read as a stand alone novel.

MAKE YOU BURN
The Deacons of Bourbon Street #1
Megan Crane
Releasing Aug 4th, 2015
Loveswept

Meet
the Deacons of Bourbon Street, bad boy bikers who are hell on wheels—and heaven
between the sheets. Megan Crane revs up an irresistible new series co-written
with Rachael Johns, Jackie Ashenden, and Maisey Yates.
Sean
“Ajax” Harding’s oaths are inked into his skin. Once second-in-command of the
Deacons of Bourbon Street motorcycle club, he left New Orleans to protect the
brotherhood, and only the death of his beloved mentor, Priest Lombard, could
lure him back. Walking into the old hangout gives him a familiar
thrill—especially when he gets an eyeful of the bar’s delectable new owner. A
wild ride with her is just the welcome Ajax needs. Then he realizes that she’s
Priest’s daughter, all grown up and totally off limits.
Sophie
Lombard loved her father, not his lifestyle. She’s done with bikers . . . until
Ajax roars into town—arrogant, tough, and sexy as ever. And although he treats
her like the Catholic schoolgirl he once knew, Sophie’s daydreams tend to
revolve around sin. With the very real possibility of heartbreak looming,
Sophie knows better than to get too close to an outlaw. But every touch from
Ajax is steamier than the Louisiana bayou—and heat like this may just be worth
getting burned.

This close, she could see too much. Entirely too much. The years hadn’t been particularly kind to Ajax, but then, he’d started off entirely too pretty for his own good. She remembered him in his feral early twenties, bright and blonde and so stunning that tourists had followed him around the French Quarter like they thought he was a harmless wolf cub set loose from his pack, like that hard smile of his was merely teeth and there was something more than violence in his sweet blue eyes.

I’m so glad you came back from Afghanistan in one piece, she’d heard one of the besotted tourists giggle at him once upon a very late night, over at one of the Priory tables with her too- short denim skirt already shoved out of his way.

And Ajax had responded, that angelic face of his never quite as hard as those eyes, No one comes back in one piece, bitch. With his hands high on her thighs and murder in his tone. They just come home.

His face was leaner now. Tougher. Less angel, more warrior. This Ajax wore his danger and his power right there on his face, in the lines that made his eyes look bluer, in the beard that made him look like the walking calamity he was, and no one would mistake this man for anything but that, blue eyes or not. He was lethal. And Sophie couldn’t help but think that he was far more beautiful for it, God help her. A battered, dark gold, finely-honed machine of a man, and he was grinning at her like he already had her pants at her knees and her ass over the nearest table.

No small part of her wished he did.

And she was fucked, because once that image was in her head, she couldn’t think of anything else—and she was positive he could read it right there on her face.

“You better tell your girl to put down that phone,” he said softly, so softly and so close that Sophie had to blink to make sense of it, so entranced was she by that mouth of his. “If the police show up in the middle of my homecoming party I might lose my sense of humor.”

“I’m fine, Danielle,” she called, and the bartender behind them froze, her cell phone clenched tight in her hand. “Sean here is just an old friend of my father’s.”

“You don’t have any idea when to quit, do you?”

“Because you, of course, are the model of restraint.”

That dangerous curve of his mouth tightened, and so did everything inside of her. “I’m not the mouthy piece of ass pinned up against the back of a bar, with a golden opportunity to rethink my attitude. If I were you, I’d take it.”

“I’m not afraid of you.”

Ajax studied her. “Then you’re as dumb as you act. Bad combination, babe. Especially in this neighborhood.”

“Should I interpret that as concern for my well-being?” she asked, her voice as acidic as it was sweet. “It’s hard to tell while you’re choking me out.”

A different sort of grin lit his face then, changing that look in his eyes and then dancing all over her. He shifted, sliding that big, hard hand of his up over her chin and then dragging his thumb over her lower lip, slowly. The grin drained from his face as he watched and he looked . . . hungry. Needy. Then he tested her teeth on the way back with the pad of that big thumb of his, and the urge to close her lips around him was so intense, so overwhelming, she lost her train of thought.

There was only Ajax, big and threatening and so beautiful it was making her shake.

He did it again. And it was the way he did it. It was pure sex in a simple little scrape of his thumb on her lip, then against her teeth, and it was dirty as all fuck.

Ajax lifted his gaze to hers then, and his blue eyes had gone hot. It shuddered through her, intent and heavy. A threat, she told herself. Dark and hard and life-altering. A distinct and deliberate threat.

But she was far more worried it was a promise.

her inability to wow audiences with her singing voice required a back-up plan.
Accordingly, she graduated from Vassar College and got her MA and PhD in
literature from the University of York in England. She wrote her doctoral
dissertation on AIDS literature, mostly so she could wallow in her obsession
with the remarkable multimedia artist David Wojnarowicz and her idol, the
bitter and hilarious David Feinberg. After many years in the rain and subject
to the whim of seasons, she followed the sun to Los Angeles, where she lives
with too many pets and an artist named Jeff. She is still plotting her Broadway

Want more of your favorite characters from the The New York Times & USA Today bestselling IN THE SHADOWS series? GOLD SHIMMER is Cass and Calder’s story.I never thought that my plan to crash a masked party to exact a bit of revenge would fall apart so easily. It was a foolproof plan. The absolute best scenario. Moon-and-stars-aligned worthy. No one would suspect I was anyone other than the wealthy, self-absorbed girl I pretended to be. The one who would wreak havoc that night.

Then again, I also didn’t plan on running into a wall of sharp wit and steely determination named Calder. The captivating Navy SEAL might’ve called me by Celeste’s name, but he refused to let me hide my true self from him. His special brand of honest, seductive charm was impossible to resist. He was confident and demanding…and everything I wanted. But the deeper I fell, the higher the stakes rose while playing a role. So I held onto our intense connection for as long as I could, knowing that he would never know me as Cass.

When an unexpected turn of events gives me a second chance to see Calder again, of course the opportunity comes with strings attached. I had no idea how dangerously tangled and deeply knotted those strings would become, but for the one man who gave me the courage to live my life for me again, I’d do just about anything.

Even become someone else.

Note: GOLD SHIMMER is meant for readers 18+ due to mature content. This is the first book in the BLACK SHADOWS duet, Cass and Calder’s story. The duet falls within the main IN THE SHADOWS series. Robin’s Review

I began reading The Paper Swan during my 30-minute lunch break at work. Sitting at my desk, in amongst my fellow employees, the noise and talking, my attention was solely focused on the pages of The Paper Swan. It’s violent. More intense than watching a movie, Leylah Attar gets into your head with her words and plays on your fears. The Paper Swan begins with eyes-wide-open terror – the inconceivable fear of a woman who has been abducted. Leylah Attar immediately grabbed my attention with the scattered, panic-stricken thoughts of twenty-three-year-old Skye Sedgewick. She is at the mercy of her abductor. Unable to see who he is, her imagination runs wild. Who would do this to her? And to what end? It’s probably one of the best starts to a novel that I have ever read.

The Paper Swan is an epic tale about friendship, betrayal, vengeance, family and love. Despite the differences of their station in life, Esteban and Skye are the close childhood friends. Their parents shield them from the harsh realities of the Sinaloa cartel while they spend lazy, sultry days at Casa Paloma. Childhood memories are a respite from the violent beginning to The Paper Swan. Recollections of lullabies sung by MaMaLu, origami animals hand-crafted by Esteban, and bedtime stories, including one about a magic swan that graces the grounds of Casa Paloma, the villa owned by Warren Sedgewick. But as The Paper Swan progresses, Esteban and Skye’s young friendship morphs from something of pure innocence to a story about vengeance, of retribution, and we are introduced to Damian Caballero.

The Paper Swan is to be savored, like a Cuban cigar or the finest wine. This romantic suspense novel is powerful, enchanting, vibrant and poetic. Leylah Attar is an artistic author. Her words are colorful, her writing unconventional. She knows just which words to use to convey the feeling of a scene, to give a reader the maximum effect. Attar intersperses scenes of both past and present, mixing in beauty, darkness and suspense. She sprinkles in bits of humor to soften the blow of fear. We are able to sense real character development in Skye and Damian. They are each on a journey as they face the demons of their past, and their story comes full circle. The Paper Swan is a lovely book, one of the best that I have read so far this year. There have been so many wonderful books published this year, but in my opinion, The Paper Swan truly is in the top tier of books for 2015. I’m awarding Leylah Attar 6 stars for The Paper Swan!

Nico Vitale was kneeling in one of the pews at St. Monica’s, praying for his mother and father. They’d been gone two years, but the pain of losing them still lingered. He had only been twenty-eight when they’d been killed, and he’d expected to have them for many more years, to give them the daughter-in-law and grandchildren they had wanted.

Their future had been stolen. From all of them.

He forced down the fury that had become all too familiar. Anger was good. Productive. It’s what drove him to seek justice, to right the wrong perpetrated against his family, against the honor code that had survived decades under the rule of some of history’s most violent men.

But this wasn’t the place for anger. This was the place for peace. Repentance. He took a deep breath and tired to calm himself.

His mother had always gone to St. Patrick’s, but Nico made a point of moving around the city, sitting in any church with an open door. He liked the anonymity of it. Liked knowing that no one would know him or remember his parents.

His faith was only a shadow of the belief that had sustained them. Nico didn’t believe in the edicts of the Church. It had been organized by man to benefit man. He worshipped his own god, and his god didn’t turn the other cheek. He might forgive, but that forgiveness didn’t preclude a punishment justly earned. Still, he liked to sit in silence and remember, to send love to his parents, wherever they were, and to stand on the side of any god who believed in vengeance.

He was reciting the Lord’s Prayer when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He instinctively shook off the hand. When he turned to see who had interrupted him, he was even less pleased.

“What is it, Dante?”He forced his voice even as he took in the leather jacket and jeans worn by the man in front of him. A dress code was part of Nico’s organizational reboot, but keeping cool was a point of pride, part of his mission to remake his father’s business for the twenty-first century. And having a reputation for being calm only made him more formidable when the situation called for his wrath.

Dante shifted in his seat, his face flushed, eyes feverish with excitement. “We got her,”he said. “We got the girl.”

Nico looked around before tipping his head at the church’s massive double doors. “Not here.”

Dante stood, hurrying down the aisle. Nico followed slowly, letting the peace of the church wash over him as he made his way out the door.

He took his time following Dante down the steps of the church. When they reached the sidewalk, they stepped back to stand near an adjacent building.

“Any trouble?”Nico asked.

Dante shook his head. “She didn’t see it coming.”

Nico didn’t like the note of excitement in Dante’s voice. Nico’s father had ingrained old-fashioned chivalry in his bones, and Nico never sanctioned hurting women. These kinds of things were a necessary part of doing business, not something he enjoyed.

“You didn’t hurt her.”It wasn’t a question.

Dante sighed, and Nico caught a hint of annoyance in the other man’s face before he could hide it. “We did it just like you said. Knocked her out, put her in the van, took her to the basement. She’s fine.”

Nico nodded. “Good. Make sure she’s comfortable.”

“Comfortable?”Dante’s laugh was bitter. “Why do we care if that bitch is comfortable?”

Nico clamped a hand on Dante’s shoulder and squeezed until he flinched. “We don’t call women bitches in this organization. Ever. Understand?”

Dante nodded, his eyes lit with the fire of indignation.

“Good.”Nico released his grip. “Now go make the pick-up.”

“Will do.”Dante rolled his shoulders, like doing so would free him of Nico’s grip when they both knew only death or dishonor would do that. “Want a ride back to the office?”

“No.”He didn’t owe Dante an explanation.

Dante nodded and headed for the car double parked at the curb. Nico watched him get in and drive away. He waited for the car to disappear into traffic before he started walking.

Dante was a problem. Nico understood it, but he was still trying to settle on a strategy for dealing with it. He knew Dante resented him. That Dante believed his father, Gabriel Santoro, should have been Underboss to Nico’s father before his death. If that had been the case, Dante’s father would be Boss now, and Dante himself would be the crown prince of the New York territory.

Instead, a year before his death Nico’s father had inexplicably turned to Nico, pleading with him to step in as Underboss. Only twenty-seven at the time, Nico wasn’t ready to take on the mantel of responsibility held by his father. He didn’t even believe in the mob. Not the way it was then; stealing and killing and raping in the name of money. In the name of power.

But his father had been unsettled. Even Nico, as young and wrapped up in himself as he’d been at the time, could see that. And his father — his family — meant everything to him. So he’d gotten his act together and joined the business, learning it from the inside out. He was just beginning to feel like he had a handle on the basic operations when his parents were murdered, execution style, outside the restaurant where they’d met over three decades ago. They had been celebrating their thirty-second anniversary.

Nico had spent the two years since remaking his father’s legacy. Raneiro Donati, head of the Syndicate that acted as governing body to criminal organizations all over the world, had stepped in as a mentor and father figure, guiding Nico through the early stages of grief and the rage that threatened to undo him. Gradually, Nico had found a focus for his fury, and he’d poured every ounce of his energy into targeting that focus and reimagining his father’s legacy.

Some of Nico’s soldiers embraced the change. Others, like Dante, clung to the old ways. Nico understood, but the reorganization wasn’t optional. They would comply or they would be gone.

Nico didn’t like taking the girl. A decade ago, something like that would be off the table, a blatant breaking of rules that had been in place since before the Syndicate formally existed. But nothing could be rebuilt without first dismantling the rotting foundation of what had come before.

And unfortunately, the girl was part of that foundation.

He checked for traffic on 2nd Avenue and crossed just before a taxi barreled through the intersection. He felt liberated by his time at the church. Lighter on his feet. Maybe he would call one of the women who acted as a physical companion when he felt the urge.

After all, he wasn’t a saint.

Tracey’s Review

“You’re the only thing I’ve wanted for as long as I can remember. And the one thing I can’t have.”

Jasper King is like no one that Muse has ever met. Sweeping in with his tiger eyes and raw strength, he is a man of secrets and silence. The two of them will change each other in ways that neither ever expected.

Oh, how I love Michelle Leighton. She infuses her books with so much feeling, with heart and soul. And Michelle’s men, well, I haven’t met one that I don’t love. So, enter Jasper King. This man, this self-contained multi-layered man, has absolutely stolen my heart. From the moment I met him in the heartbreaking prologue, I was in love. The product of a horrific past, Jasper has fashioned himself into someone that knows no fear. He’s the one that gets things done, tying up loose ends so that others don’t have to. When he meets Muse, the attraction is immediate, the chemistry between the two unmistakeable. But Jasper is certain that he has nothing to offer Muse because of who he is.

“I’m doing you a favor, Muse. You don’t want to get to know me.”
“Maybe I do. You can’t possibly know that.”
“Maybe I don’t want you to,” I confess quietly.”
I hear her huff of frustration before she flounces back in her seat, crossing her arms stiffly over her chest and turning to stare out the window.
She’s better off not knowing me. She just doesn’t know it.

STRONG ENOUGH is an action-packed thrill ride, as Jasper does his best to protect Muse from an unknown threat, and to fight his ever-growing feelings for her. Michelle had me flipping pages furiously, swept up in the intrigue of the story, and bowled over by the absolutely combustible moments between these two. I mean, I am talking the kind of heat that jumps off the page. And the feels, this book’s got them in spades. Bottom line, I love these characters, I love their story, and, heck, yes, you need to read this one now. 5 ‘dark, delicious, heartbreaking, heartwarming, add this to your TBR now’ stars.

“Jasper, I love you. I’ve loved you from the second you walked into my life. And I never stopped. Not for one minute. Nothing else matters. Nothing. And no one. All I want, all I need is you. Just you…”

(P.S. And, hot guy friend alert, the next book in the Tall, Dark, and Dangerous series, TOUGH ENOUGH, is out this fall, and I cannot wait to read it!)

Strong Enough by M. Leighton was fantastic.  This action packed thriller was not only loaded with suspense but delivered a red hot romance that will leave the readers swooning.  I was held hostage by this book until the very last page.  The thrilling part is that this book is the beginning of a new series that is going to have the readers counting the days for the next release.

Michel’s Review

I am a huge fan of the Assassin Series by Toni Aleo.  This series features a professional hockey team with charismatic players that touch your heart.  Overtime is the seventh book in this series and it is another record breaking goal.

I have to say that Overtime was a hard book for me.  It deals with alcoholism.  Having come from a home affected by this disease I could easily relate to the recovery process and the ongoing battles.

Jordie Thomas has been out of the season due to an injury.  Hockey is his entire life or so he thinks.  Jordie uses his sport as a way of coping with his messed up life.  He came from a pretty horrific abusive background.  He was grossly neglected.  He has a lot of demons that haunt him.  Another way Jordie has learned to cope is with liquor, partying, and sex.  But this time around his drinking and partying has gotten out of control.  His position on the team is at risk unless he gets help.  He is forced to go to rehab.  He is forced to face his demons.  He is forced to face himself.  He is forced to admit that he is an alcoholic. He has to make amends and admit he is in deeply love with a woman that he carelessly hurt.

Jordie has realized what he lost when he carelessly let Kacey King go.  He convinced himself that he should not be messing around with his best friend’s little sister.  He has convinced himself that he isn’t good enough for Kacey.  Deep down he loves her with his entire heart and soul.

Once Jordie goes through rehab and faced his demons he realizes that he needs to get Kacey back in his life.  He wants to be a better man for her.  He wants to love her with his entire being.  He wants her to be his future.  He will have to prove he is worthy of this woman.

The meat of this story is Jordie’s journey.  Admitting to being an alcoholic is the hardest step.  Learning to forgive himself and accept his mistakes is hard.  As we all know there are 12 Steps to becoming sober.  It was heartbreaking and uplifting witnessing Jordie go through this journey.  He had a very solid support system along the way.   His sincerity was commendable.

Kacey on the other hand was a hard pill to swallow.  She came across as a needy, immature, and self centered woman.  She was so wrapped up in how Jordie hurt her that she forgot what made her fall in love with him.  Once she found out Jordie was on the road to recovery she was not as supportive as she should of been.  She was very insecure and insanely jealous.  That is the last thing a recovering alcoholic needs.  I felt like she needed therapy herself.  She definitely needed to be in the Al-anon program in order to support Jordie the way he needed to.

I wish we could of seen more of their previous relationship to understand their deep love for one another.  I had a hard time grasping their love.  This book was very focused on the issues and I felt the couple lost some of their magical chemistry we look for in romance. The deal breaker that kept me from giving this a five star review was Kacey.  She was just too much.

Toni Aleo tackled a very difficult subject and made it real in this book.  I have to commend her with delivery of this story.
