Dream Maker

Nashville Nights Series – Book 2

By Erin McCarthy

Buy: Amazon / B & N / ITunes

Synopsis

The bestselling author of Heart Breaker returns with another sultry Nashville Nights novel of country hits and stolen kisses, as a one-night stand turns into the beginning of an irresistible partnership.

Shane Hart loves the ladies. Like hit records, he can never have too many. Shane swore long ago never to treat a woman the way his abusive father treated his mother, but his traumatic past has kept him from making any solid commitments—even to a fiery redhead like Avery O’Leery. Shane’s happy enough to rescue her from a tight spot, but that’s as far as their connection goes—until their unforgettable liaison has him rethinking his impulse to love ’em and leave ’em.

Avery has big plans: first, shake the dust of small-town Kentucky from her boots; second, become a bona fide songwriter; and third, keep the truth hidden about her birth father from everyone in Nashville. Nowhere on that list is she supposed to land in bed with a sexy stranger who rescues her off the street at midnight, especially if that stranger is Shane Hart. Avery’s trying not to fall for the dreamy music producer who could make or break her career. But her best-laid plans seem to be no match for a love that feels like destiny.

Michel’s Review

Erin McCarthy has her mojo back.  Dream Maker is the second book in the Nashville Nights series.  It is a winner.  I liked this book much better than the first book in the series and felt that special blend of magic Erin always puts into her books.

Shane Hart rescues a damsel in distress.  The damsel in distress, Avery O’ Leary, was abandoned on the side of the road by her ex boyfriend.  Avery came to Nashville as an aspiring songwriter.  She also brought her secrets with her.  The last thing she wants is to seem like an optunist when music producer Shane Hart rescues her.  The problem is that she really likes Shane as a person.  She wants to be around this dynamic man.

Shane Hart is a great guy even though he is anti relationship.  His childhood left Shane scarred and fearful that he could not live up to commitment.  The heart wants what it wants and he is rethinking his views on relationships.

Shane and Avery have undeniable chemistry, the one thing that makes it even better is they both truly like one another.  Shane has to get over his issues and Avery has to get over her secret before they can move forward together.  They are connected in more ways than a budding friendship.

I truly enjoyed this book and felt the characters come alive off the pages.  It wasn’t loaded down with angst and strife.  It was a genuine romance.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Pilot Hockey Series – Book 4

By Sophia Henry

Kristen Katsaros wants a life full of adventure and laughter. After a difficult childhood, her motto is to live each day like it’s her last—because it just might be. So when Kristen’s parents send her on a post-grad singles cruise in the Caribbean to meet a Greek husband, she promptly hooks up with the hottest guy she’s ever met. Michel’s Review

After having read all the previous books in The Pilot Hockey Series by Sophia Henry, I can honestly say I did not see this book coming.  Like the previous books, this book had a unique, emotional storyline that steps outside of the typical sports themed romance genre. Reader’s were introduced to both the leading characters in the first book, Delayed Penalty. Although they were secondary characters, they each had interesting dynamics to their personalities.  Readers were left with some distinct impressions that were definitely misleading once their true personalities are exposed in Unsportsmanlike Conduct.  I walked away with a bad impression of Pavel in the first book and fell for him in this book.  I didn’t have a lasting impression of Kristen in the first book but walked away from this book with a lot of respect, compassion, and admiration of her character.  I admired her inner strength and honest outlook of her life.

Kristen Katsaros has a mantra of making every moment worthwhile.  She lives every day like it is her last.  She has very validating reasons for living life the way she does.  She has dealt with a debilitating disease all of her life.  She has to manage her health every moment and be prepared for the worst.  Those good moments are the ones that count.

A gift of a cruise from her parents is just what she needed until she finds out that the guy they want her to marry is also on the cruise.  She doesn’t need a husband, she needs the freedom to explore all the possibilities her life has to offer.  When a gorgeous guy pretends to be her boyfriend throughout the cruise, it makes it a vacation of a lifetime.

What happens on vacation quickly bleeds into the everyday realities of life.  Pavel/Pasha and Kristen are connected in more ways than a vacation romance.  The realities of Kristen’s life are not going to change Pavel/Pasha’s course.  He knows what it takes to go all the way, he’s determined to win Kristen’s complete heart, and will do everything within his power including Unsportsmanlike Conduct.

Although this book had some heavy subject matter, it was still a charming romance.  I walked away with a different perspective of the characters.  I also walked away with more compassion of those who suffer from CF.

Auden Berezin is used to losing people: her father, her mother, her first love. Now, just when she believes those childhood wounds are finally healing, she loses something else: the soccer scholarship that was her ticket to college. Scrambling to earn tuition money, she’s relieved to find a gig translating for a Russian minor-league hockey player—until she realizes that he’s the same dangerously sexy jerk who propositioned her at the bar the night before.

Equal parts muscle and scar tissue, Aleksandr Varenkov knows about trauma. Maybe that’s what draws him to Auden. He also lost his family too young, and he channeled the pain into his passions: first hockey, then vodka and women. But all that seems to just melt away the instant he kisses Auden and feels a jolt of desire as sudden and surprising as a hard check on the ice.

After everything she’s been through, Auden can’t bring herself to trust any man, let alone a hot-headed puck jockey with a bad reputation. Aleksandr just hopes she’ll give him a chance—long enough to prove he’s finally met the one who makes him want to change.

Landon isn’t afraid of telling Gaby that he’s got it for her bad. The problem is, she seems unwilling to believe it. And though Landon enjoys his reputation as a cool-headed athlete, he hates losing—both on the rink and off. She also notices that the coach is way hotter than she expects, but Linden won’t let herself get burned by another athlete. Been there, done that—and had a kid at seventeen to show for it.

Michel’s Review

This is the first book I have read by Annika Martin.  I didn’t realize that it was the third book in the Dangerous Royals series.  Although I haven’t read the first two books I was easily drawn into Savage Mafia Prince and picked up the back story of the series right away.

Patient 34 is in the Fancher Institute, a hospital for the criminally insane.  These patients are an absolute danger to society and beyond treatment.  A Fancher patient will never gain their freedom or their sanity.  They are a lost cause.  When a ruined investigative journalist is planted within the Fancher Institute as a nurse to uncover a drug operation, she discovers something else.  A patient that is not what he seems.  He has managed to control his reactions to the intense drug regimen to control his violent actions.  There’s a real person locked behind the blank stare and zombie like presence.  She intends to find out more about Patient 34.

Patient 34 is the Dragusha son that has been missing for years.  He is also the Savage Adonis that surfaced two years earlier and violently murdered the professor studying his savage behavior.

Kiro Dragusha was kidnapped as a baby.  He was abandoned in the wilderness as a child.  He was raised by wolves until he was discovered by civilization.  Now he is a prisoner chained to a hospital bed.  He is waiting for the moment to escape and return to the wilderness.  The kind nurse may be his only chance for escape or the final lock on the chains that hold him to the bed.

Nurse Ann is more than a kind nurse.  She is his salvation, she is his mate.  When he escapes barely with his life, he takes Nurse Ann with him.  Unbeknownst to him, Nurse Ann is his enemy, she is a journalist.  The enemy that landed him in the Fancher Institute.

Kiro and Ann’s journey is more than an escape to the wilderness.  It is a discovery of who they both are as individuals.  It is also a discovery of who Kiro really is.  Only Ann can help him.  What he doesn’t realize is his real family has been searching for him.  Is it the wolves or the Dragusha brothers that will claim their long lost brother?

This book had me glued to the pages.  After reading this book I had to go back and read the first two books in the Dangerous Royals series.  This series is captivating.

Synopsis

The whole world might be in love with him. But all he’s ever loved is her.

Grant Turner’s name is synonymous with football. The fans and media can’t get enough of the player known as The Invincible Man, a nickname he earned while growing up in one of the toughest neighborhoods in the country and the nickname he’s kept by being one of the best players in professional football today. No one can take him down. He’s unstoppable.

But even a suit of armor has its weak point, and Grant’s has always been Ryan Hale.
They were a couple of kids when they fell in love, and just when it looked like the happy ending neither expected was within reach, Ryan disappeared. No explanations. No good-byes.

Grant coped by throwing himself into the game for seven years, and he’s finally moved on. Or so he thinks.

When she walks back into his life, all of those feelings come crashing back, despite the warnings in his head that tell him she’ll leave him again. Grant can withstand the league’s toughest defensive line, but he’s always been weak where she’s concerned.

No man can take Grant Turner down.

But one woman certainly can.

One woman will.

Excerpt

How had I gotten here?
That was the question still cycling through my head when I heard the shower turn off. In the minute that followed, I did everything I could not to think about what was behind that closed bathroom door. What being a wet and naked Grant Turner.
What being the only man I’d ever loved and the only man I ever would. My life felt like it was ending, but his was only really getting started. There’d be more for him, despite whatever he said or thought. There’d be love, heartache, and more love. For Grant, I would be one of the many. For me, he was the one of them all.
When the bathroom door opened, a fog of steam burst into the bedroom. It wasn’t a plume; it was a thick fog.
“Do you have any skin left after that scalding shower?” I asked, turning toward the dresser so my back was to the bathroom. Grant fresh from a shower had always been a weakness for me, and I guessed nothing about that had changed.
“I don’t know. What do you think?”
I saw him from the corner of my eyes, standing beside me. When my gaze shifted to confirm whether he had or had not scalded off his skin, my breath caught.
“Why are you naked?” I blinked a few times to keep my eyes facing north. It was a chore though. I felt as though two metal weights dangled from my eyeballs and were trying to draw them downward.
Grant chuckled, pulling open the bottom drawer. “I’m not naked.”
“Why are you mostly naked?” When the fight against gravity became too much and my eyes dropped below his navel, I literally felt flames licking up my throat. Fuck me. That man had always had an amazing body, but now . . . I knew women who’d auction off their souls for a chance to be entertained by a body like that for a night.
“Because I figured you wouldn’t prefer the alternative of me being fully naked.” Grant pinched at the white towel tied around his waist as he pulled a pair of light grey sweats from the drawer. “But since I can tell from your shock I was wrong, what the hell.” In one flick of a finger, the towel fell to the floor.
“Grant!” It came out as more of a shriek than I’d intended, but he was standing two feet in front of me, fully naked.
“What?” His voice was innocent, but his smirk was the opposite. “Nothing you haven’t seen before.” His muscles rippled when he shrugged, tugging on his sweats. “Just seven years older is all.”
When he turned to pick up his abandoned towel, I got the full view of his back which, like this, looked as wide as the span of my arms.
“And seven years bigger,” I muttered, still unable to believe he’d just bared it all like that. Actually, the more I thought about it, I shouldn’t have been so shocked. Grant wasn’t exactly modest.
Glancing back at me, he winked. “Why thank you. Glad you noticed.”
When I caught what he was getting at, heat settled beneath my cheeks. “That’s not what I was talking about.”
“Maybe. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t what you were thinking about.” He slid the waistband of his sweats around until he found a comfortable spot. Which happened to be a good half foot below his navel.
“In your hurry to make me uncomfortable, you forgot to put on underwear.” I flattened my expression to give the impression that I was not half as shook up as he thought I was.
The truth was, I was probably twice as shook up as he thought.
“I don’t believe in them,” he said simply.
“You don’t believe in what? Underwear?” I felt my forehead crease.
“I’m anti-underwear.”
“Anti-underwear?”
“You know how some people are anti-gun or anti-abortion? Well, I’m anti-underwear,” he explained with a shrug. “But are you?”
My arms folded and I looked across the room. “Am I what?”
“Uncomfortable?” He moved a step closer, when he’d already been five steps too close.
Now, it wasn’t just the image of him clouding my mind. It was the way he smelled. The sound of his breath. The feel of the warmth cascading off of his body.
Sealing my eyes closed, I focused. I imagined the most Zen, peaceful place on the planet. “No,” I said as firmly as I was capable.
“Liar.” I heard the twisted smile in his voice. After a moment, I felt him move closer. “Why do I make you uncomfortable? I never used to.”
My eyes opened right into his. As dark as Grant’s eyes were, a person would never notice the flecks of light in them if they didn’t get close enough to see them. Up close, his eyes were more light than dark.
“You don’t make me uncomfortable.” I could hear the lie in my voice like it was a shout.
One by one, Grant’s hands formed around the outsides of my elbows, his fingers circling around my arms. His body pressed closer until his chest touched mine each time he inhaled. “Then why are you trembling?” His head dropped, his mouth moving just outside of my ear. “Why do I make you uncomfortable, Ryan?”
His voice, his body. His words, his touch. He was wrecking my resolve, one moment at a time, until I could feel the last of it about to crumble.
“It’s been a long day, Grant.”
“It has.” His head nodded beside mine. “Let’s keep up this trend and make it a long night too.”
My heart started to echo in my eardrums as a growing ache pulsed inside me.
“We should get to bed.” My voice was trembling now too.
“We should.” His head dropped lower to my neck. He took in a long breath, like he was trying to take me inside him. “Yours or mine?”
Despite my resolve, I smiled. “They’re all yours technically.”
“They’re whatever you want them to be just as long a you say which one you want me to carry you into. Or feel free to point in the general area too. I can figure it out.”

Michel’s Review

Nicole Williams is one of those authors that has a gift of delivering an emotional story with complete compassion.  She gives the readers the right kinds of information that validates the characters emotional journey.  Once again she has written a story that touches the heart.

Without giving too many spoilers I will give a brief review.  Grant and Ryan came from a horrendous background.  They grew up in a violent and dangerous world.  Their only reprieve was each other.  Just as they are on the brink of their adult future Ryan disappears without a trace.  Seven years later she is back but it may be too late.

From the bitterness to the passion, Grant and Ryan will fight for their love.  Their lives are on the line this time and there is someone else depending on them.

I highly recommend reading Touching Down by Nicole Williams.

Tracey’s Review

When you’re father is the president of the United States, people expect you to behave a certain way. Like, maybe not breaking into a lab to free test animals. Or spending all your free time helping at an animal shelter. Or walking around building sites in jeans, sassy tee-shirts, and mud. But Madeleine McGuire isn’t the typical First Daughter. She knows how to play the political game, and does it grudgingly, all while being her off-beat, big-hearted self.

Jake Simmon knows how to play the game, too. When your mother is the current VP, with sights set on becoming the next president, you have to walk the walk. As a wounded warrior, Jake is happy to give back to other veterans, but what he wasn’t counting on was Maddie. Frenemies for as long as they can remember, Jake and Maddie have an edgy sort of relationship. Except, suddenly Jake is looking at Maddie with new eyes, and Maddie is seeing him in a different way, too, and, well, chemistry.

BEDMATES by author Nichole Chase is a sweet, heartwarming, and, yes, sexy read. Although I tend to steer clear of the NA trope these days, there is something refreshing about this one. Maddie is a bit of a wild child, having inherited her free spirit from her mom. Although she tries to toe the line, well, life happens. When Maddie and Jake are forced to work together to promote a housing program for veterans, they have to make nice for the cameras, and, soon enough, find that they’re interested in spending more than just air time together.

Nichole has managed to capture the tenor of a life lived in the public eye, and what it must be like to always have to be ‘on.’ At the same time, she’s written Jake, Maddie, their famous families, and the people that make Washington, D.C., what it is, in a way that makes them more likable and approachable.

I really enjoyed that the storyline involves current events, things that will resonate with many different types of people. The animal rights issues, the wounded warrior issues, the political games, all add up to make a book that I liked very much. I would happily recommend BEDMATES, and rate it 4 stars’ worth of love, laughter, and steaminess, with the added bonus of political celebrity thrown into the mix. Definitely a nice addition to your TBR.

In Ruins

The Something More Series – Book 3

By Danielle Pearl

Genre: New Adult

Buy: Amazon / B & N / ITunes / Kobo

Synopsis

The first New Adult spin-off novel in the bestselling YA Something More series by Danielle Pearl!

She wanted to start again. To be someone—anyone—different. . .

Freedom. When Carleigh Stanger thought of college, that was the word that came to mind. Freedom from her unhappy home life. Freedom from high school mistakes. Freedom from the memory of that terrible morning. Only instead of bringing a sweet escape, Carleigh’s first campus party traps her in the scornful gaze of the last person she wants to see, Tucker Green.

It wasn’t long ago that being close to Carleigh was everything Tucker wanted. But that was before he realized she was just another scheming girl who’d do whatever it took to get her way. Even lie to the guy she claimed to love. Unfortunately while Tucker’s brain remembers the pain Carleigh caused, his body only remembers the pleasure . . .

Excerpt

I linger half in a dream, wondering why I feel as if I’m waking up inside my past. My fingers automatically reach to the base of my throat for the white gold crown charm Tucker gave me before graduation last year, a reminder that I would always be his princess. But always didn’t last, and my fingers come up empty as I recall tearing off the necklace and stuffing it unceremoniously into my bathroom drawer minutes after he broke my heart.

The subtle scent of fresh spring soap, aftershave, and the faint musk of last night’s sweat ambushes my senses. My eyes flutter open to find dawn breaking in through the window shades. It’s still early enough that I doubt anyone else will be awake for a while, but I know that whether it’s minutes or an hour, once Tucker’s eyes open, it won’t be long before I’m asked to leave.

It takes no more than another second or two to register the pattern of his breathing, too lively to indicate sleep, and I stiffen above him. I swallow anxiously and reluctantly look up.

He’s watching me, gaze impassive, but his arms don’t move. His fingertips dance, feather-light along the small of my back, and I wonder if it’s what woke me. I clear my throat, though I have no idea what to say in this moment. But Tucker speaks first.

“This can’t happen again. You know that, right?”

I nod. Because I do know. We’ll never be friends if we blur the lines with this. Not just the sex. Not even mostly the sex. But this. This intimacy. This is what could break us. Break me.

In an instant, the haze of last night’s lust begins to lift, and anxiety settles in its place. Because I doubt I could survive his breaking my heart a second time, and that’s precisely what I’m setting myself up for. I’ve laid my own trap, and I need to free myself before it’s too late.

“We shouldn’t be laying in bed like this,” I tell him.

His smile is wistful. “I know.”

But he makes no move to disentangle himself from me. Instead, he does the opposite, his hand leisurely roving up the avenue of my spine, as if it’s going for a Sunday drive.

I shrug it from my body and sit up, startling him. “Stop doing that,” I snap.

“Touching you?” His brow furrows.

“No! Yes. Touching me, and agreeing with me but continuing this… this affection anyway.”

“Sorry,” he murmurs half-heartedly.

“No you’re not.”

He frowns as I yank the sheet out from under the bedspread and drape it around myself.

“Maybe it was wrong of me,” I admit. “Coming here last night. Maybe I was stupid to believe we could just hook up and walk away. Or that I could. But Tucker, if you wanted to fuck me, then why couldn’t you just fuck me?” My words drown in regret. “You can’t say these things—about my eyes, how you think about me… You can’t stare at me the way you do, or call me Princess. It isn’t fair.”

“Carl—”

No, Tuck. You know how I feel about you. And you said it yourself. When you love someone more than your own life, you don’t let them go for anything.” I stare at him meaningfully. “Anything.”

Tucker shakes his head, eyes lined with exasperation. “Carl, I tried to talk to you about that last night—”

“No, Tuck. I get it now,” I assure him. “And maybe I always should have known. But you must have, right? Or at least you do now.”

“Know what?” His brow furrows deeply, vaguely bewildered.

I glare at him, trying to determine if he’s undermining my intelligence or if I’m somehow not making sense. But I know him better than that, and as easy it would be to vilify him right now, I can’t lie to myself. “Maybe you really did believe it at the time,” I admit. “That you loved me back.”

“Carl—”

“Or maybe you really did love me. Just not enough, you know?” I don’t bother fighting the tears. He’s seen them plenty of times now anyway, and if there’s ever been a time to let them flow, it’s now.

And Tuck stops his attempts to explain. He blinks at me, stunned silent, and I suspect he’s finally grasping the weight of his own words. And I realize that even though he’s the one who said them, it’s only now that he’s really understanding their implications. The truth is obvious and cruel, and with it I can stop wondering. I can stop analyzing his words and guessing at their meaning. Because now I know.

Eventually Tucker sighs, raking his fingers through his hair as he searches for words to placate me. But I don’t want his guilt, and I definitely don’t want his pity.

I avert my gaze and it lands on his overnight bag, three feet to my right. I force in a deep breath and shove my hand inside it, pulling out the first piece of clothing I can grab, grateful to discover it’s a t-shirt—fitted for him, but oversized for me. I hastily slip it on.

I look back at him, feeling utterly defeated. “You let me go.”

We both know now what that says about his love, but this isn’t about blame—this is about acceptance. It’s about moving forward. “So let me go,” I beg him, and then hurry out the door.

Michel’s Review

Carleigh Stanger wanted college to be a fresh start in her life.  Her childhood was anything but good even though through in the eyes of the world she appeared to be a privileged girl that didn’t want for anything.  Appearances are always deceiving.  Assumptions aren’t always the truth.  Secrets can be devastating.

Carleigh and Tucker were high school sweethearts.  Their love for one another was pure until Carleigh’s secrets were exposed.  Her secrets destroyed Tucker’s family.  He was devastated by her deceptions.  His heart was destroyed.  His love turned to pure hate.

Carleigh and Tucker had planned on attending college together.  They are still at the same university but no longer together.  Carleigh is doing her best to avoid Tucker and move on in her life.  Fate keeps throwing them together.   Their new social groups seem to constantly cross paths. They are in one of the same classes even though both of them changed their schedules after the breakup. Now they are forced to work together on a group project that is a major portion of their grade.  Being forced to work together is painful.

College life is quite different than the high school world.  They are now adults having to deal with real adult situations.

The more they are around each other they begin to see each other in a completely different light.  They begin to take responsibility for their previous actions.  Their misconceptions, insecurities, and assumptions were based purely off of immature emotions and ideas.  They are learning the world isn’t black and white.  Their parents actions are not their actions.

History has a way of repeating itself.  Once again Tucker and Carleigh are going to have to face the ugly truths of their past lives.  This time it may end up killing one them.  The one thing that hasn’t changed is their hearts.  They still love one another deeply.  They have to learn forgiveness and acceptance.

Danielle Pearl wrote a compelling new adult novel.  It was loaded with the right amount of angst and the right amount of romance.  She created the perfect college environment. I enjoyed In Ruins and would highly recommend this book.

Rebellious

True Brothers MC Series – Book 2

By Gillian Archer

Buy: Amazon

Synopsis

Every rebel needs a cause—and a woman to believe in. Discover why Heidi McLaughlin raves that “the sexy, alluring bad boys of the True Brothers MC will make your mouth water” in this smoldering novel from the author of Ruthless.

The black-leather-clad biker who just roared up on his Harley doesn’t resemble any single father Emily Clark has ever known. But as she watches “Reb” bonding with his son, Emily realizes there’s a lot more to this bad boy than his alpha-male attitude or his sinful good looks. And when Reb takes an interest in her, there’s no way she can resist his surprisingly tender touch. The one thing Emily won’t give up is her hard-won independence.

As president of the True Brothers MC, Reb owes a sacred debt of loyalty to the club, but his first priority is making sure that his son grows up right. Pursuing an unexpected affair with Emily is a close second. Then a violent stalker threatens her life, and this unconventional guardian angel really turns up the heat. Nobody messes with Reb, or anyone under his protection. Trouble is, how’s he supposed to defend Emily when she insists on going it alone? He’s willing to put his life on the line for her. Now, maybe, he needs to open his heart.

Michel’s Review

Rebellious is the first book I have read by author Gillian Archer.  I didn’t realize it was the second book in the True Brothers MC series.  I realized it when I got a bit into the story.  Usually I am a stickler about reading books in series order.  I can honestly say that Rebellious can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order.  Readers will enjoy it either way.

Emily Clark just wanted to go home and relax after work.  Instead she finds her neighbors son sitting on the steps alone eating a bagful of junk food. How can you impossibly ignore a kid that needs to be taken care of? She’s going to confront his father since his mother is obviously not doing her job.  Little did she know she would be facing down the president of the True Brothers MC.  Or that she would be shoved in the middle of a custody battle and nasty divorce.

The last thing Reb needs is another relationship.  He’s got his son to worry about, an ex wife to get rid of, and a club counting on him.  He can’t stay away from Emily Clark even though she is not a part of his world.  She’s a fighter and she fought for his son, how could he resist?

Emily is not sure she fits into Reb’s world.  She doesn’t know if she can handle the biker world.  The one thing she is sure of is that every day it gets harder and harder to resist Reb.

Reb isn’t the only one with problems in his personal life.  Emily has her own set of problems in her life.  She’s a fiercely independent woman bent on handling her own problems.  A stalker may be beyond her capabilities.  She just needs to admit she needs Reb in her life.

Between the crazy ex’s, a pyscho stalker, and a war brewing with a rival MC, Rebellious has everything readers look for in a Biker / MC romance.  I will definitely be reading the first book in the series and the next releases by Gillian Archer.

Boss gives Miri a hit

Despite Miri’s disgusting appearance, her nasty addiction to heroin, and the fact that her maybe-boyfriend had been stealing from me to feed her habit, I felt responsible for her. It was my shit she got hooked on, and she just seemed… frail and in need of someone to take care of her. It was almost as if she were sent here as penance for my past failures to take care of my mom and sister.

Besides, Miri intruded on my property. She knew where I lived. I couldn’t just toss her out. It was highly unlikely, but she could call the cops and get them down here with a warrant in the blink of an eye.

Better to get her dosed up and calmed down before trying to talk.

“Jase,” I barked.

One of my men immediately appeared at my side. “Yes, Boss.”

“Bring me the kit.”

With a sharp nod, he left the room and reappeared in less than two minutes to hand me a small zippered pouch. “Here you go, Boss.”

“All of you leave,” I ordered as I began prepping the kit. One by one, I lined the items up on the table, in the order I would need them. Everyone obeyed my command but one.

“Boss, come on…”

“Milo, don’t push me any further tonight.” I turned to give my lieutenant a dark stare that said don’t fuck with me. He better not press his thoughts in front of a stranger.

Milo’s lips pressed tight as he struggled to keep his mouth shut and follow my orders. Nothing new from the big, strong-willed man. He was very opinionated at times. Tense and agitated, Milo gave in and agreed. “Fine. I’m going home then, Boss.”

“See you in the morning.” I dismissed Milo and returned my attentions to the sweaty, gross, trembling girl in my kitchen.

Using an alcohol pad, I wiped my hands to kill any germs. Then I picked up a tiny packet of white powder, careful not to spill any, and poured it into a spoon designed to lie on a flat surface without tilting. The rubber tourniquet was long compared to Miri’s razor-thin arm. I knotted it around the tiny limb, holding back a pained grimace at touching her filthy skin. When I glanced up to check on her, I found Miri watching intently. I blinked and tore my gaze away from those wide green eyes to search for a vein. There wasn’t a single usable one on her scar-riddled arm.

“Shit,” I muttered when an inspection of her other arm turned up the same.

“I-I use my feet.” Miri’s voice was so soft I nearly missed her response.

Caught in the sliver of emerald in those captivating eyes, it took me a minute to reply.

“All right.” I removed the tourniquet, put it around a slender ankle, and placed her left foot on the floor to get better blood flow to the extremity. A single bluish vein stood out, surrounded by a half-dozen faded and fresh track marks. “There it is.” I grabbed another alcohol pad and swabbed the area. Syringe in hand, I uncapped a vial of sterile water and drew up a small amount, adding it to the powered opiate in the spoon. Using a lighter, I cooked the drugs until the mixture was reduced to a clear, bubbling liquid. As I waited for the chemicals to cool, Miri became frantic.

“I-It’s okay. I c-can take it hot. Really. I-I don’t mind. Please…”

“No.” I shook my head. “It’s not safe. You could blow a vein or worse.”

“I don’t care! Give it to me.” She started to struggle in the chair, in danger of tipping it over again.

Fed the fuck up with today’s events and bullshit in general, I caught her chin between my thumb and forefingers and pinched hard enough to hold her still.

“Stop this immediately or you’ll get nothing. Listen carefully, because I’m only going to say it once. I’m never, ever hospitable to intruders, so you should consider yourself lucky to still be breathing right now and not being driven to a remote location where no one will ever find your body.”

Those dull eyes widened with fear and her lip trembled. “Okay, okay. I’m g-good. I’ll be good. I’m s-sorry.”

I ripped open another alcohol swab and wiped off my fingers. Filthy junkie. Once the mixture was cool, I drew it up into the syringe using a filtered needle and made sure the air was out.

“Ready?” I’m not sure why I bothered—I knew the answer before the question was asked.

“Yes, please, please, please.” Miri vibrated with anticipation.

Despite the fact I grew up around drugs, despised drug use, watched my family implode from drug addiction and never once allowed anyone to get high in my house or permitted drug use among my employees, I went against everything I believed personally and stuck the needle into the vein on Miri’s foot. I pulled back to watch as dark red blood entered the syringe. With visual confirmation I hit a vein, I removed the tourniquet and slowly injected the opiate into her system until the syringe was empty. Working efficiently, I cleaned up the kit, put the used items in a container for the staff to dispose of, and washed my hands at the sink.

Then I sat down and waited.

Michel’s Review

Miri never dreamed her life would take the path she is on.   She is addicted to heroin.  She lives for her next hit.  She will do anything for it, no matter how degrading it may be.  She is a junkie.

Looking for her next hit lands her in a very dangerous situation.  She has gone to the Bossman, the man in charge of all the drug sales in the city, for her next fix.  He would just as soon have her killed than give her a dose of his precious commodity.  But something triggers within him, rather than seeing a strung out filthy junkie, he sees a human being that is worth saving… or at least saving today.  He sees the regrets of his past and a way to amend some of it.

Jagger Bosman is the most ruthless drug lord to grace the city.  He climbed to the top after taking out the previous drug lord at a young age.  He rules his city without mercy or conscience.  His commands are absolute, no room for interpretation.  If one of his employees defies him or disregards his commands, they are dead within a moment.  For the life of him he can’t figure out why he allowed a filthy junkie to live after she entered his compound without permission.

Bossman is a peculiar man with extreme OCD and other quirks.  His peculiarities came from his past.  He is beyond redemption but he does have a soul.  He is giving a girl a chance to live her life drug free.  A life that does not belong in his world.  A chance at real happiness.  He will imprison her, care for her, and get her drug free.  He will set her free of the world that binds her to her next fix.

Everything the Bossman does is premeditated.  He does not act upon whims or spontaneity.  Every decision is precisely calculated.  But once Miri enters his life, his existence begins to change.  His behavior is changing.  It’s making him look weak to his employees and his enemies.

A war is coming.  Miri might get caught up his world by association rather than need.

He has to figure out what his next move will be before it’s too late to control it.

The Bossman is about control.

Heather C. Leigh has started a very dark series that is almost impossible for a happily ever after for both Miri and Jagger.   Their world is brutal and the strong are not going to survive.  Junkie ended on a cliffhanger that will take the Broken Doll series in another direction.  I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Chapter 3

Jeffery

“Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley

A good person, a good man, a good father wouldn’t leave his children a few days after their mother died to go hide in a secret love-shack he once kept with their biological mother. Juliet and Jacob deserve a good parent, and not a shit mess like me. I’m a worthless, empty excuse for a man without my wife, I’m nothing without Sara, and they can’t see me like this. If they look into my eyes, they’ll know I’m dead, too.

My secretary has left no less than two voicemails every fucking hour on the hour—my father-in-law, too. The whole world wants to tell me how sorry they are for me. I only check my phone to make sure it’s not my babies trying to reach me. My parents and my whole family are at my house with them, and all I can think about is how alone we are. My mind won’t let me forget about Sara—the girl I once met in a New York club on a dirty dance floor, the girl that offered to blow me as a joke, only the joke was on me. Just one kiss and she fucked me up for life, but I’d do it all over again because I owe her everything. What the fuck is wrong with me? It’s as if my heart is finally allowed to explode and all the feelings and thoughts I’ve trained my mind to keep under control are blasting out, and I can’t do anything but let it consume me. The prophecy I’ve held onto for fourteen years has waited long enough, and it begs to finally play out.

Michel’s Review

Lost In Rewind by Tali Alexander is the third book in the Audio Fools series.  I have never read any to Tali’s books and went into this book blind.  I can honestly say that I am happy that I haven’t read the previous two books in the series.  If I had read the previous books, which I will, I think they would of influenced my reactions to this story.  I think I would of had a definite negative opinion about Jeffrey.  Going into this story blind allowed me to see every facet of Jeffrey’s life and how he was influenced by uncontrollable circumstances in the past.

Imagine a fortune teller saying something about your future that hits home.  A prediction that is right on mark.  A prediction that is so believable it can’t be anything but the truth.  Like most things, there are always two sides to a story, a bigger picture in the scheme of things.  Jeffrey allowed a prediction to dictate his life.  He hung on to the hopes the prediction entailed.  Was he right to do this?  Yes and no.

In the course of fifteen years Jeffrey’s life was beyond his control.  He loved two women with all of his heart or so he thought.  By hanging onto a prediction about his future, he let that rule his life rather than living for each moment.  He missed out on gifts that life had to offer.  The special moments  he could never get back.  His actions hurt other people.  Most of all, he hurt himself.

After his wife’s death Jeffrey finally thinks he’s free.  He can finally live the life a gypsy told him would have.  What he thought was his future life has the potential to destroy him completely and destroy his children.  The gypsy had the prediction right, just not what Jeffrey perceived.

He will have to face his past, open his heart, and embrace the future.  It was written in the stars long ago.

When I first started this book I thought Jeffrey was a complete jerk.  As the pages progressed, my views about Jeffrey changed.  I was able to see a vulnerable man that had loved deeply but forgot to love himself.  He was too busy trying to pave the path he thought his life was on.  When the truth and reality hits home, he’s a lost soul.  Jeffrey is brave enough to reach out and find what really matters in life.

I will definitely go back and read the first two books in the series now that I know what a good person Jeffrey is inside.  I think if I would of known any of his story before hand I would not of read this book.  Like I said before, there are always two sides to every story.
