Lauren Layne
Releasing Aug 25th, 2015
Loveswept
In
a novel that’s perfect for fans of Abbi Glines and Jessica Sorensen, USA
Today
bestselling author Lauren Layne delivers a sexy take on the timeless
question: Can a guy and a girl really be “just friends”?
When
Parker Blanton meets Ben Olsen during her freshman year of college, the
connection is immediate—and platonic. Six years later, they’re still best
friends, sharing an apartment in Portland’s trendy Northwest District as they
happily settle into adult life. But when Parker’s boyfriend dumps her out of
the blue, she starts to wonder about Ben’s no-strings-attached approach to
dating. The trouble is, even with Ben as her wingman, Parker can’t seem to get
the hang of casual sex—until she tries it with him.
The
arrangement works perfectly . . . at first. The sex is mind-blowing, and their
friendship remains as solid as ever, without any of the usual messy romantic
entanglements. But when Parker’s ex decides he wants her back, Ben is shocked
by a fierce stab of possessiveness. And when Ben starts seeing a girl from
work, Parker finds herself plagued by unfamiliar jealousy. With their
friendship on the rocks for the first time, Parker and Ben face an alarming
truth: Maybe they can’t go back. And maybe, deep down, they never want to.

I scoop up the last bite of cereal from my bowl as I stand. “We should probably get going,” I say, still chewing. “IKEA gets crazy on Saturdays, and I don’t want to risk them being out of stock on the extra-large shelves.”

“You have that many dolls?” Liz asks, looking torn between being creeped out and feeling completely sorry for me.

“Fifty-seven and counting,” I say, straight-faced. “And actually, Ben, if you’re going to be a while, I might just run upstairs and brush their hair? I noticed last night Polly was starting to develop a tangle.”

Ben drains his coffee, pushes back from the counter, and shakes his head at me. “You poor, sick weirdo.”

Then he turns to Liz, putting his hands on her skinny waist and pulling her forward with an apologetic smile. “You mind if I take a raincheck on breakfast?”

I barely hide the snort. In Ben’s world, raincheck is a synonym for I’m going to intentionally lose your phone number.

In under a minute, Ben is nudging Liz out onto the front porch, and, impressively, she doesn’t even look pissed. I follow them out, just to be annoying, watching as he whispers something in her ear. Her eyes go wide and sympathetic and she gives me an It’s gonna be okay, little buddy smile. She heads toward the sidewalk with a wave.

“What did you just tell her?” I ask, taking a sip of my coffee as we watch her leave.

“I told her you were an abandoned orphan and that the only thing your birth mother left you with was a doll named Polly. Hence the sad obsession.”

I shake my head. “You know I’m going to have to rewrite the house rules. And No dolls will so be going on there.”

Liz turns back and gives one last wave. Both Ben and I wave back, and I can’t help myself. “Enjoy your walk of shame!” I call after her, my voice sweet as sugar.

Liz’s head snaps back as though trying to determine if she heard me correctly, but Ben puts a hand over my face and shoves me back into the house before closing the front door.

He absently rubs a hand over his abs as he looks me up and down.

“You should change. You can’t wear your ratty booty shorts and that ugly T-shirt to IKEA.”

“First of all, you can absolutely wear your rattiest and ugliest T-shirts to IKEA. That’s pretty much the IKEA dress code. And second, we’re not going to IKEA. Really, are you getting so comfortable with your lies that they become fact in your mind?”

“We are going to IKEA,” he says, running both hands through his short brown hair before heading toward the stairs.

“For what?” I ask.

“I need a new dresser.”

“What’s wrong with your old dresser?”

“It broke.”

I wrinkle my nose. “How the hell do you break a dresser?”

He shoots me a look over his shoulder and wiggles his eyebrows.

It takes me only seconds before I put the pieces together. “Airhead?” I hitch a thumb over my shoulder at the departed female. “You banged her against the dresser?”

“Hey, she was unusually tall, which gave me the unusual opportunity and prime angle to—”

I slap my hands over my ears and start singing Billy Joel’s “Piano Man,” my default protective gesture whenever Ben gets a little too colorful with descriptions of his sexual antics.

Another house rule: Parker absolutely does not want to know what happens in Ben’s bedroom.

“Hey, do you and Lance have plans today?” he asks.

“Maybe you should have asked that before you mandated an IKEA trip. But no, he’s got an all-day study group.”

Lance is getting his MBA from the University of Portland.

“Cool. Let’s grab lunch after.” He heads into his bedroom without looking at me.

Lunch, huh?

I narrow my eyes and sprint up the stairs after him, pushing open his door before he can shut it in my face.

Sure enough, his dresser is definitely leaning unhealthily to one side, and I count two, no make that three, condom wrappers.

He pulls a green polo from the tiny closet in the corner and looks around his messy floor until he finds his jeans.

I wait expectantly.

“What?” he asks.

“Lunch?” I lift my brows. And wait for the explanation.

Ben scratches idly at his slightly stubbled chin. Sharing a bathroom with the guy, I know he shaves every morning, but the stubble seems to be perpetual.

“Well, you know that girl I dated a couple weeks ago? Kim?” he asks. “She wanted me to go to her sister’s engagement brunch, and I told her I was busy all day. But she’s just crazy enough to stop by and see if I’m actually out of the house, so I thought we should be elsewhere. . . .”

I hold up a hand. “Fine. I’ll be your alibi. But I get to pick the restaurant, and you’re buying. Oh, and you have to put the toilet seat down every day for an entire week.”

He raises his hand as though wanting to say something in class. “I’d like to add a house rule: Parker isn’t allowed to tell Ben how to pee.”

You don’t make the house rules. I do. And I didn’t tell you how to pee,” I say exasperatedly as he wrenches open a dresser drawer and pulls out a pair of boxers. “I’m trying to do your future wife a favor by teaching you how not to be a pig.”

He inches by me into the hallway. “Another house rule: Parker shalt not say profanities as future wife to a dedicated bachelor.”

“You’re not a dedicated bachelor. You’re just a typical horny twenty-four-year-old dude, and, again, you don’t make the house rules—hey!”

He shuts the door to our shared bathroom in my face, and too late I realize that I’d missed all the classic signs of a skilled Ben Olsen diversion. He’d just wanted to beat me into the bathroom.

“Don’t use all the hot water!” I shout, pounding my palm on the door.

The door opens just enough for me to see one blue eye blinking back at me. “Didn’t you say Polly had a tangle? You better go get on that.”

The door shuts again, and I pound a second time. “Remember, the green towel is mine. The white one is yours.”

I wait for confirmation, but there’s only silence.

“Ben, I know you can hear me! Don’t ‘accidentally’ use mine just because yours smells funny.”

More silence.

Damn it. He is so planning to use my towel.

So, yeah, my best friend is a guy. Doesn’t mean I have to like it all the time.

Michel’s Review

Blurred Lines by Lauren Layne was an absolutely charming feel good kind of book.  I love the “Friends To Lovers” theme.  These kind of books are easy to read because the characters already have an established close relationship and the reader doesn’t have to muddle through the meet & greet process.

Parker and Ben met in their freshman year of college and became best friends.  Six years later they are still best friends.  They know each other in and out.  They know each others quirks, weaknesses, faults, and strengths.  They have built a mutual respect for one another.  They have established a platonic loving relationship.

When Parker breaks off with her long term boyfriend, Ben ,a one night stand kind of guy, starts looking at Parker in a whole new light.  When Parker wants Ben to teach her how to embrace single life it puts a whole new twist on their friendship.  They are going to be friends with benefits.  Let the fun begin and falling head over heels in love take over.

This book was fun.  The banter between Parker and Ben was witty, fun, and charming.  Their relationship once it moved to the benefits phase was sizzling hot.  When they hit the falling in love phase it was down right swoony.

I highly recommend Blurred Lines by Lauren Layne if you are looking for a warm and fuzzy romance.

Code of Honor

Spontagio Family Series – Book 1

By Missy Johnson

5801e-goodreads

Synopsis

In a series debut for fans of Tracy Wolff and Sylvia Day, New York Times bestselling author Missy Johnson asks a burning question: What happens when love is undeniable—and taboo?

Pietro Gustovi is loyal, polished, and hard as stone, the kind of guy women want and men respect. At twenty-three, he’s survived tragedies that would break men twice his age. And he owes it all to his father’s closest friend, Giovanni Spontagio, who took him in as an orphaned teenager. Pietro would give his life for Giovanni . . . but his heart belongs to Giovanni’s daughter.

Raised in Chicago under the spotlight of power and privilege, Lucia Spontiago feels most alive on stage. Determined to become a prima ballerina, she escapes her father’s protective gaze long enough to audition for the ballet in New York City. Soon, however, Lucy realizes that she is not alone. Pietro is watching her back. And though he’s like a brother to her, Lucy cannot deny the thrill she feels knowing his eyes are on her.

Pietro could never betray his mentor by sleeping with his only child. But Lucy follows her passions, no matter how forbidden. Soon their nights are consumed by explosive, red-hot temptation—a dance that will expose shocking secrets and burn everything else to the ground.

Note: Code of Honor ends on a cliffhanger. Pietro and Lucy’s story continues in Code of Love!

** Provided by Netgalley in Exchange for an Honest Review **

Judging a Book by it’s Cover:
Sharp dressed man that looks to have the weight of the world on his shoulders and mind. Makes a gal want to try to alleviate some of his stress. 😉
Looking Deeper:
First-person POV, alternates with clear definition. Pietro feels indebted to Giovanni for taking him in when he was a teen after his parents were killed. His attraction to Lucia, Giovanni’s daughter must be kept a secret for fear of Giovanni’s reaction. He’s also determined to get to the bottom of his parents’ murder, although danger surrounds the case from every angle. Lucia was a little breathing room to become her own person, regardless of how much she loves her overly-protective father. She’s attracted to Pietro, even when everyone refers to them as siblings. Their chemistry is natural to two people that spend their teen and young adult years living together and discovering each other in new capacities. (Sort of similar to a Step-sibling story, but not quite.) There are some interesting secondary characters that add a nice depth and some dynamics to the plot. Their whole relationship and his past are nothing but conflicts, but they manage to work though them in ways that would be appropriate to the age and situation. There is some predictability, but not too bad. The conclusion was completely ABSENT. At no time were we informed that this was a SERIAL, ending on a cliffhanger. I’ve wasted hours of what little time I have for an incomplete story… not happy about that at all. HOWEVER, if I had been informed and forewarned, I’d think that the story in itself was pretty darn good so far.

BOOK BLURB:

Trish Grant is not a romantic. Okay, so she may read her share of romance novels, but that doesn’t mean she thinks that some fellow with a six pack is going to ride up on a horse and sweep her (literally) off her feet. Romance like that just isn’t for her. It belongs on the page.

Max Jackson noticed Trish at his cousin’s funeral, of all places. She was hard to miss with her citrus-colored hair, violet contacts and fiery attitude.

Trish was just as captivated by Max. He makes her laugh, which is rare, and it doesn’t hurt that he rocks blue hair and the most killer smirk that drives her crazy. Max is there for her during a rough time and even if she wanted to, she can’t shake him.

There are things about Trish that Max doesn’t know, and she’s not going to tell him. She hasn’t told anyone and doesn’t plan on it, thank you very much. But when Trish’s life is ripped apart by a dark piece of her past, will she let Max in? Or will she give up her potential fairytale to protect her already-scarred heart from further damage?

Michel’s Review

Together We Heal by Chelsea M. Cameron is the fourth book in the New Adult, Rise and Fall Series.  I am a huge fan of this series and have read every book the moment they were released.

Reader’s first met Trish Grant in the first book as a secondary character.  Her character has been a strong supporting character throughout the series.  She’s the girl that marches to her own beat and is extremely loyal to her family and friends.  At the same time she is a bit snarky, sarcastic, and a realist.  It’s obvious she has her own hidden secrets and inner turmoil.  Readers have been anxiously awaiting to read her story.

Together We Heal is quite different from the other books in the series.  This book starts with Trish already in a relationship with Max Greene.  They met at a funeral and clicked.  They began seeing each other on a regular basis.  Their relationship is at a stand still.  Although they are affectionate with one another in public it’s quite a different story behind closed doors.  Trish is very reserved about letting the relationship progress into a more intimate relationship.  She is dealing with demons from the past and fear of abandonment. She desperately wants to get past her issues because she really likes Max.

Max is a one of a kind guy.  He sees beyond the outer layer Trish presents to people.  He really likes her on all levels.  He’s patient enough to stick by her side and help her with her issues.  Once she opens up to him, he falls even more in love with her.  She also understands that he has issues of his own.  Seperately they are both a mess, together they are a beautiful portrait of a loving committed relationship.

The one thing that Trish and Max have going for them is their support system.  The whole gang from the Rise and Fall series will always have their backs.

Once again Chelsea M. Cameron wrote a compelling emotional story that will touch your heart.

Tracey’s Review

Mackenzie Morgan is on the receiving end of her family’s attempts to get her to settle down, but she’s in no hurry. Independent and unafraid to speak her mind, she catches the attention of Texas Ranger Daxton Chambers at a charity event. Dax finds Mackenzie a breath of fresh air. Smitten, he can’t forget her and, when Fate intervenes, he won’t miss the chance to meet her again.

Reading a new-to-me author is a little bit like opening a present. I don’t know what’s inside, and there’s always a little bit of wondering whether it will be a good fit or not. But, still, I’m a fan of presents, so when I had the opportunity to read JUSTICE FOR MACKENZIE by author Susan Stoker, I was in.

I enjoyed so many things about this book. Mackenzie is a real hoot. A self-professed babbler, she talks about everything that pops into her mind, unfiltered. But she’s met her match in Dax. At 46, he’s ready to settle down, and falls for Mackenzie pretty much immediately, loving her just as she is. I really appreciate seeing a couple that is a bit older than the norm in the romance genre, because the life experience is something that I can more closely relate to. Mackenzie is not perfect, but Dax doesn’t want or expect her to be, and it’s their normalcy, their whole down-to-earth attitude that makes them readable and appealing.

There is a dark undercurrent to this story which adds another layer of interest for me. I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say that there are some intense scenes that made me a little uncomfortable, but nothing that would keep me from recommending it.

I have found a new author to follow in Susan Stoker (and, by the way, she is just a lovely person, too, so added bonus!). JUSTICE FOR MACKENZIE is a solid 4-star read for me, and I look forward to reading more from her in the near future.

Salvage

Salvage Duet – Book 1

By Tiffany Aleman

Synopsis

***This book contains mature content and touches on the basis of child abuse, bullying, and alcoholism. If the themes listed above bother you and you still choose to read, please proceed with caution. This book is intended for readers 18+ and has a cliffhanger. ***

The first book in the SALVAGE Duet will always be a beloved book to me. It’s not a love story with a big red bow at the top. Aleman plans to make us work for the fairy-tale ending we crave. Brilliant writing, gut-wrenching story line, and characters that will forever be in my heart. Salvage, Book 1 is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to continue this journey in the sequel. ~ Shayna Renee’s Spicy Reads

“Sometimes love isn’t enough to salvage a relationship. This book is about redemption and second chances and will keep you turning the pages.” ~ Heather Davenport – Naughty and Nice Book Blog

Stereotypical trailer trash. That’s how people saw me. I’m Karmen Butler, the girl everyone teased, tortured, pranked—bullied.

After graduating high school, I left my shithole of a town behind with no intentions of ever returning. My dreams were within my grasp. Or so I thought…

Luck. That’s what was on his side. Brayden Stephens was on top of the world and the biggest prick of all. At least that’s how I remember him. Then he lost it all. His vices took over and now he’s a washed-up has-been with a cocky smirk and arrogant attitude.

Valued. That was how he made me feel. One night changed everything for us. In an instant I was lost to his touch, his voice. Everything about him captivated me.

Against my better judgment, I let him in. I let him see the real me. Since he’d walked into my office, he’d been trying to redeem himself of his past mistakes.

Glimpses of a love and life I’d never known before were all he had given me. Now he’s done it, the one thing he said he wouldn’t. He’s broken me. AGAIN.

Excuses are what I was fed. The truth restrained him, bound him to his past, and now, I’m left to deal with the aftermath.

Is there anything left to SALVAGE?

I don’t know…

You tell me.

Tracey’s Review

Life has been anything but beautiful for Karmen Butler. Bullied and humiliated throughout her entire time in high school, she was finally able to get away from her small hometown and the people that made her life a living hell. Back home after the death of her parents, Karmen has a career that she enjoys and the support of her best friend. Things are finally looking up, until he shows up.

Brayden Stephens seemed to have it all in high school. Rich and good-looking, he was a football star and BMOC. And, although he wasn’t the one doing the bullying, he spent years standing on the sidelines, doing nothing while his friends tortured Karmen. Back in Reidsville after a career-ending injury, Brayden will be working for the one person that he knows must hate him.

I was so excited to have the opportunity to read SALVAGE by Tiffany Aleman. This is the kind of book that, even as it is gutting you, you cannot put down. Karmen has been through so much heartache, and is finally in a place that feels safe, both emotionally and physically. When Brayden reappears in the picture, she doesn’t know whether she can trust him or not. But there is more to Brayden than anyone understood. While his life appeared to be perfect, he was also hiding his own personal hell, and is still dealing with the fallout all these years later.

This book is sexy, heartbreaking, and angsty, and I absolutely could not stop reading. SALVAGE is a solid 4-star book for me, and I am very much looking forward to Part 2.

Tina’s Review

Judging a Book by it’s Cover:
Yet another shirtless cowboy, yay (sarcasm). In this case, it was the synopsis that gripped me.
Looking Deeper:
I do not understand how Amazon has this classified as a Sport romance or a New Adult / College romance. I think Amazon needs to re-evaluate it’s categories for this one to obtain maximum exposure and benefit the author better.
Ryan is 30 when widowed, now a 33-year old single dad to Olivia, his 15-year old daughter. He is the Sergeant for the local police department and helps out on the family ranch on occasion. He’s barely just going through the motions called life on auto-pilot for the sake of Liv, until the day he spots a gal kicking her flat tire on the side of the road.
Amber is mid-twenties but has enough life experience to not truly be considered a New Adult and she’s not a college student. He ex is a cheating bastard and her parents are too self-absorbed to be called family. On a whim, she decides to take advantage of the parental situation by having her dad buy out her mom’s unwanted old bakery inheritance in small-town Montana and leave Chicago behind for a new beginning with the help of her best friend, Bailey.
This is a first person POV story, from alternating perspectives – clearly defined for easier comprehension. If the Prologue does not punch you in the gut, you better make sure your heart is still beating. Ryan is an emotionally developed character and it’s easy to fall in love with him. He’s very well portrayed. Amber is full of love, life and joy – something Ryan and Olivia truly need. I did not feel the depth of character as much, but she’s still a wonderful lead female. There seemed to be two tiers of secondary characters: Olivia, Ryan’s brothers and mom, and Bailey then a lower tier of Ryan’s dad, random townsfolk, and miscellaneous others. Each added a fullness to this story that really is a longish novella. The chemistry and compatibility build slowly and naturally through believable dialogue and interaction. The plot was a little bit “standard fare” with not a lot of dynamic energy, but it flows well. There were some conflicts and hurdles to overcome that were handled in a variety of ways that felt right for the characters. Predictability was minimal to nil. There is a wonderful prologue that ties most loose ends up, HOWEVER, in the final bonus scene, there’s a fun quick glimpse into what may be in store ahead.
This is the first book that I’ve read from C.A. Harms, although I have been interested in reading several of her books for a while now. If they are anything like this one, I do believe I’ll be picking them up in the future.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Down and out with an injury keeping him away from the game, Assassins’ defenseman Jordie Thomas lives for the blades of his skates on the ice and the feeling of oblivion off it. With no choice but to heal, he’s forced away from the sport that runs through his veins. With everything at stake and darkness setting in, he quickly finds himself spiraling even further out of control. As his life begins to come crashing down around him and his contract with the Nashville Assassins on the line, he’s given an ultimatum. Ready or not, Jordie is forced to face his past, the fears that consume him, and the one woman he let walk away.

Kacey King had her professional dreams come true, yet her heart was battered and broken. With an Olympic gold medal around her neck, she’s ready to look forward to the future but without the one man she wanted in it. She’s missing the key pieces of her heart she left months ago with the only person who was capable of destroying it, causing her to falter in all her plans to move on.

>In the game of life, there are winners and losers, and neither Jordie nor Kacey want to be on the losing bench. If only Jordie could convince Kacey he’s a changed man and that he wants her right by his side as his MVP for the biggest and best parts of a life they build together. With emotions running high and the game on the line, can two proud people find happiness with each other, or will their hearts and souls be left in the cold? Will they see that sometimes having someone by your side who knows the good, bad, and broken is better than going it alone and losing everything through the back of the net? They are out of time on the game clock and fighting for the win of their lives.

But overtime was made for an Assassin like Jordie.

Jordie Thomas knew he was screwed.
There were two things that he didn’t want, ever, in his life.
Herpes, and to be called into Elli Adler’s office.
Everyone knew that it wasn’t good to be called into the office of the owner of the professional hockey team he played for, the Nashville Assassins. If it was something good, usually she just called to chitchat, as she called it, and dote on her players. But when she called them into her office, ten out of ten times, they were screwed.
And today, Jordie must be screwed.
As his good leg bounced from the nerves, Jordie waited for the door to open to Elli’s office. His shoulders were taut, his other knee ached, and his heart was pounding. Ever since he got the call that she wanted him to fly from Colorado to Nashville for a meeting, he had been replaying every single scenario in his head. He hadn’t been making the greatest decisions lately, and he was pretty damn sure this had to do with his spur-of-the-moment vacation to Louisiana.
He should have just stayed home.
That whole trip was a clusterfuck. That’s the only way he could describe it. He hadn’t acted like himself, he kept trying to forget a certain someone, and he really should have just stayed home and healed. Not only had it pushed him back a week in PT but now he was worried that something he did there may be back to haunt him. As he replayed the weekend, which consisted of a lot of alcohol, a lot of women, and a good long visit in the ER that resulted in even more great sex, he couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary that could have brought him here. Then again, Elli didn’t like when her players’ whore-like tendencies hung out, but still, she usually called and warned them to clean it up.
Hell, he had gotten that call plenty of times. Maybe that’s why he was here? She was done with his ways? Damn it. Hopefully, that wasn’t it though. He was on the road to recovery after a really nasty hit into the boards last year, and nothing was going to keep him off the ice.
Well, except Elli Adler, that is.

Michel’s Review
I am a huge fan of the Assassin Series by Toni Aleo. This series features a professional hockey team with charismatic players that touch your heart. Overtime is the seventh book in this series and it is another record breaking goal.
I have to say that Overtime was a hard book for me. It deals with alcoholism. Having come from a home affected by this disease I could easily relate to the recovery process and the ongoing battles.Jordie Thomas has been out of the season due to an injury. Hockey is his entire life or so he thinks. Jordie uses his sport as a way of coping with his messed up life. He came from a pretty horrific abusive background. He was grossly neglected. He has a lot of demons that haunt him. Another way Jordie has learned to cope is with liquor, partying, and sex. But this time around his drinking and partying has gotten out of control. His position on the team is at risk unless he gets help. He is forced to go to rehab. He is forced to face his demons. He is forced to face himself. He is forced to admit that he is an alcoholic. He has to make amends and admit he is in deeply love with a woman that he carelessly hurt.

Jordie has realized what he lost when he carelessly let Kacey King go. He convinced himself that he should not be messing around with his best friend’s little sister. He has convinced himself that he isn’t good enough for Kacey. Deep down he loves her with his entire heart and soul.

Once Jordie goes through rehab and faced his demons he realizes that he needs to get Kacey back in his life. He wants to be a better man for her. He wants to love her with his entire being. He wants her to be his future. He will have to prove he is worthy of this woman.

The meat of this story is Jordie’s journey. Admitting to being an alcoholic is the hardest step. Learning to forgive himself and accept his mistakes is hard. As we all know there are 12 Steps to becoming sober. It was heartbreaking and uplifting witnessing Jordie go through this journey. He had a very solid support system along the way. His sincerity was commendable.

Kacey on the other hand was a hard pill to swallow. She came across as a needy, immature, and self centered woman. She was so wrapped up in how Jordie hurt her that she forgot what made her fall in love with him. Once she found out Jordie was on the road to recovery she was not as supportive as she should of been. She was very insecure and insanely jealous. That is the last thing a recovering alcoholic needs. I felt like she needed therapy herself. She definitely needed to be in the Al-anon program in order to support Jordie the way he needed to.

I wish we could of seen more of their previous relationship to understand their deep love for one another. I had a hard time grasping their love. This book was very focused on the issues and I felt the couple lost some of their magical chemistry we look for in romance. The deal breaker that kept me from giving this a five star review was Kacey. She was just too much.

Toni Aleo tackled a very difficult subject and made it real in this book. I have to commend her with delivery of this story.

“I’d like to hire you to paint my portrait.”

Harlow almost bounced out of her seat, but caught herself with a single thought. Can’t appear too hasty. “Okay,” she said, playing with the edge of a piece of paper. “If you insist. And if the price is right.” She’d drawn countless images of Beck, but the thought of painting him to scale and seeing him in full color intoxicated her. She could play with different shades of gold, brown and bronze, and even a wealth of greens to get the emerald flecks hidden so deeply in his eyes just right.

Maybe Kimberly had nailed it. Maybe Harlow had stared at Beck for reasons that had nothing to do with the job.

“Name a figure.” He slowly, leisurely, walked back to the couch and eased down, the whiskey in hand. “Whatever it is, lollipop, I’ll pay it.”

The new endearment startled her, considering he hadn’t used one these past three weeks. The fact that he’d gone with lollipop, something sweet and edible he’d never called the others…

I’m special to him.

Oh, no, no, no. Red alert! Red alert! That was the true danger of him. Somehow, he made everyone feel special.

“That’s a daring thing to say,” she stated quietly.

“But true nonetheless.”

She placed her elbows on the desk and leaned forward. “Very well. The price is…” Inspiration struck, and she smiled evilly. “You can’t have sex for a week.”

His eyes narrowed to tiny slits, but he appeared far from angry. “Why do you care about my sex life?”

“I care about you, and I think abstinence will help build character.”

He didn’t miss a beat. “You care? Very well, I accept.” No time to celebrate. “With two caveats,” he added. “The week won’t start until the painting is done.” He smiled now, and it was a wicked one. “Also, I want the painting to be a nude.”

Her breath caught in her throat, only to exit on a gust. “I…you…excuse me?”

“A nude. Meaning I won’t be wearing any clothing. If you want to strip down, that’ll be okay too.”

This was punishment for daring to impede his sex life, wasn’t it? “I’ve never actually painted or even drawn what you’re suggesting, and I’m not sure I have the skill.” Or if she would survive.

“I have complete faith in your ability. And as an artist, a professional, I’ll expect you to view me strictly through objective eyes. You can do that, can’t you?”

“Of course,” she said. She could absolutely, one hundred percent view him through objective eyes…if he wore a cloak of invisibility. But even then it would be iffy. “Why do you want a nude?” she demanded, hoping to shame him into retracting his request.

“Maybe I enjoy the thought of disrobing for you.” His voice had gone low and husky, a caress of unfettered temptation, making her shiver. “Maybe I like the thought of your eyes on my bare skin and your hands forming the shapes of my body.”

She gulped. Having only ever dealt with boys, never with men, she had no idea how to respond to so blatant a statement.

“Or,” he said, his voice returning to its normal fun, flirty tone. “Maybe I’m narcissistic and want to immortalize every inch of myself. How is one to know?”

How indeed. “When would you like to start?”

“Tonight.”

I’m going to hate myself for reminding him of this, but… “What about your date? I can’t—won’t—hurt Kimberly.”

“I think we both know she was about to cancel on me. Which makes me wonder what the two of you were discussing.”

Shifting uncomfortably, she said, “I will never betray a confidence.”

“I could change your mind, but I won’t. I admire your mindset.” His gaze dropped to the pulse fluttering in her neck. “I’ll arrive at seven, and I’ll bring dinner.”

“Yes. I’d like that.” A lot. And it wasn’t the thought of food that made her heart race, but the thought of having him in her space. Alone…naked. Within reach.

She sucked in a breath. Oh…crap. The worst had happened, hadn’t it?

Kimberly had figured it out, but Harlow had done her best to deny it until the truth practically vibrated in her bones. How had she ever fooled herself into thinking she could fall for West…when she’d already fallen for Beck?

“What’s wrong, dove?” he asked gently. He came around the desk and sat at the edge, turning her chair to trap her between his legs. “You were twinkles one moment, sullen the next.”

He always read her so well, while she always struggled to make sense of his moods. Life wasn’t fair. “It’s nothing I want to discuss right now,” she said, refusing to lie to him. But she had to talk to someone about this.

Who? She had no confidants, and any secrets she revealed to others could be used as a weapon against her. A game of “humiliate Harlow for sport.”

“What will it take to get you to trust me, hmm?”

Was he serious? “Beck, for the past three weeks you’ve treated me like I’m a carrier of cholera. Why do you want my trust?”

“You’re my friend.”

But I want to be more. “Yes,” she said, and cleared her throat. “You’re right. I am.”

“So talk to me like a friend. Share your past with me. Tell me what changed you in high school.”

Her mouth went dry. Always they circled back to this. “Forget I agreed to be your friend. We’re enemies.”

“You’ll tell me what’s easy, but nothing that’s hard.”

“I don’t like to think about what changed me. It hurts.”

“Pain fades. Rip off the bandage and give the wound a chance to heal.”

“No.” If she told him, she’d have to show him. If she showed him, he’d never want her again. And right now he wanted her. He had to. The way he was looking at her…

He leaned down until his nose almost brushed against hers. “One day, Harlow, you’ll open up to me.”

“One day,” she whispered. “Maybe. But probably not.”

He cupped her nape, the heat of him making her gasp. “Definitely. And in more ways than one. I’ll make sure of it.”

Michel’s Review

The Hotter You Burn by Gena Showalter is the second book in the sizzling hot contempory series, The Original Heartbreakers.  These bad boys are going to burn up the pages and smolder your heart.

Beck Ockley is the womanizer of their family.  He goes through women like water.  His only rules are one night only and no repeats.  He’s not interested in relationships.  He just wants to have a little fun.  His womanizing ways are a deflection of what is really below the surface of Beck Ockley.  Being a product of the foster care system has left a negative effect on his heart.  He has a jaded view of love.  When he catches Harlow Glass, the town pariah, he is in for a change of heart.  Can he handle it?

Harlow Glass is the true definition of “mean girl”.  Her heartless antics and cruel behaviors in her youth have made her the town pariah.  She was truly a horrible person, that is until something happened when she was a teenager.  Since that time she has become a recluse.  She withdrew from high school and was not seen again by the townsfolk.  In the past ten years her mother has died, she lost her beloved home, and has become a homeless recluse.  She can’t get a job in town because of her past behaviors.  She is the most hated person in the area.  She is now homeless and close to starving.  When she is caught stealing a pie from her former home by Beck Oakley it is a blessing and curse at the same time.

Beck is touched by Harlow.  He understands what it feels like to be down and out.  He understands that mistakes can haunt a person for their entire life.  He respects the fact that Harlow owns her mistakes and misdeeds.  He admires her strengths as well as her vulnerabilities.  What he doesn’t realize is that he has fallen head over heels for Harlow Glass.

Harlow is grateful for Beck’s help.  She is grateful for her new job.  She is grateful for new home.  She strives to make amends to all those she has hurt.  She has regrets.  She also has dreams.  She wants to be truly loved.  She wants a solid relationship that leads to commitment and family.  Beck’s flirtations and advances are thrilling but not enough.  He can’t give her what she wants most.

Both are falling in love and changing.  What is it going to take for Beck to surrender his heart completely? Will it take a terrible life threatening event to wake Beck up?

This book was loaded with angst and passion.  I absolutely loved Harlow.  She owned her past and never tried to flinch away from it.  Beck was a bit wishy washy when it came to matters of the heart but after what he went through as a child it was valid.

I love this series and am looking forward to the final book.  These heartbreakers have stolen my heart.

Synopsis

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood delivers the first novel in an enthralling new series set amid the shifting dynamics of a Southern family defined by wealth and privilege—and compromised by secrets, deceit, and scandal….

For generations, the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world. Their sustained wealth has afforded them prestige and privilege—as well as a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that by all appearances plays by the rules of good fortune and good taste. Downstairs, the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade. And never the twain shall meet.

For Lizzie King, Easterly’s head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing that she intended or wanted—and their bitter breakup only served to prove her instincts were right. Now, after two years of staying away, Tulane is finally coming home again, and he is bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane’s beautiful and ruthless wife; not his older brother, whose bitterness and bad blood know no bounds; and especially not the ironfisted Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many, many terrible secrets.

As family tensions—professional and intimately private—ignite, Easterly and all its inhabitants are thrown into the grips of an irrevocable transformation, and only the cunning will survive.

Michel’s Review

Fans of J. R. Ward are in for a treat with the release of her new contemporary series , The Bourbon Kings.  This new series has been optioned for television.

The Bourbon Kings series is quite different from the previous series by J. R. Ward.  The writing and tone is in a class by itself that follows along the lines of contemporary fiction rather than romance fiction.  It does not have the fast paced, intense action that readers are used to in the Black Dagger Brotherhood or Fallen Angels series.  The characters are not the hard core alphas with loads of attitude to back them up.  This series is based upon  a prestigious family and their elite world.  The characters are elitist that have been raised with entitlement and vast wealth.

The first half of the book revolves around world building and character introductions.  It is very wordy and overly descriptive.  The pacing is slow and tedious.  I found myself getting bored and quickly losing interest and then the J. R. Ward magic happened.  The second half of the book was enthralling.  I could not put the book down.  The characters came to life.  The family dynamics became complex and mystifying.  The plot clearly started to unfold and set their world into play.  The mystery and intrigue as well as the inner workings of the family kept me captivated.  In the end there was a cliffhanger that had me interested in what was going to come next.  The cliffhanger was not angsty or a do or die moment but an integral part of the story that is beginning to unfold.

After I finished the book and tried to formulate my thoughts I could clearly see how this is written for television.  I think that this series is going to be a very entertaining television series that will have the same kind of effect on viewers that Dallas and Dynasty had.

I can’t wait to see what happens next in The Bourbon Kings series.
