Excerpt: Chapter One

WINTER

I didn’t know which one of us looked more surprised when Finn O’Malley walked into the Riverside Café at about ten minutes before midnight. The café was experiencing a lull in the post-late night, pre-bar closings time period, and there were only two customers: myself and a man in his fifties over by the counter.

And now Finn.

“Winter,” he said, his tone a cross between disappointment and disbelief which I understood immediately. He’d come to this run down café—far from where he lived and worked—to…well, I wasn’t sure what he’d want other than get away from anyone who might know him.

And there I sat. The girl who’d had an enormous, unrequited crush on her older sister’s high school boyfriend. And said older sister might have been the worst girlfriend he’d ever had. If my speeding heart was any indication, my crush was far from dead.

“Finn. Good to see you.” He looked terrible—or as terrible as Finn could ever look. Tall with dark hair set against ivory skin and the lean, muscular build of someone who did manual labor for a living. Finn would never look bad.

But grief had hollowed out his cheeks, and his shocking blue eyes were bloodshot. His inky black hair stood in clumps around his head as if he’d run his fingers through it multiple times. He wore a gray T-shirt that hugged his strong frame but had dirt smudges all over it. His worn jeans displayed dust and grime.

He worked in construction—or more accurately, he flipped houses, the last I’d heard. Not that I kept up on the doings of Finn O’Malley that much.

His eyes shifted around the restaurant, as he probably wondered how he could take a seat away from me and not appear too rude. I solved his dilemma by grabbing my purse and library book and sliding out of the booth.

“I was just going,” I said.

He licked his upper lip and I about died on the spot. But I was an adult now. All of twenty-two years. Crushes might have made my heart squeeze and my knees shake, but they didn’t paralyze me. Giving him a tight smile, I walked toward the door. He didn’t move, and unless I was going to walk around a table or two, I’d have to brush by him.

So I did.

And smelled him.

And suddenly I couldn’t leave.

The sour, sweet stench of alcohol was so strong I wondered if he’d poured a bottle of vodka over his head. It was a familiar fragrance because my sister had been wearing it regularly for the past ten years. Her alcohol addiction, among other things, was a reason Finn and she were exes when many people had thought they’d get married out of high school.

I backed up. “Did you drive here?”

The side of his mouth quirked up—not quite a smile, more of a wry acknowledgment of my thought process. “I’m not drunk,” he said. “I…it’s a long story.”

“I’ve got time.” I started back toward the booth. “Come sit with me. My book was boring anyway.”

Good manners drove him to follow even if he didn’t want to. He dropped into the opposite bench, and I pushed my water glass toward him.

“Thanks.” He drained it in three gulps. I was way too fascinated with the motion of his throat and the way that his Adam’s apple signaled every gulp. He set the glass down carefully as if almost surprised by his own sudden thirstiness.

Due to his long arms, his folded hands reached halfway across the table. I kept my arms locked by my side so I wouldn’t accidentally on purpose touch him.

My role was friend, not girlfriend, no matter how many inappropriate fantasies I’d dreamed up when I was a girl.

The waitress came out and delivered another glass of water and refilled my now empty one.

“I’ll have a burger. Plain. Order of fries,” Finn rattled off without looking at the menu. He pointed at me. “You want anything?”

I shook my head. “I’m good.”

The waitress left, and Finn stretched his long legs out and leaned back into the booth, looking completely wiped. If I moved my legs, even a little, I’d brush against him. I stayed still because I wasn’t sure what I would do if I touched him. Something embarrassing, no doubt.

“What are you doing here?”

Clearing my throat, I managed to form a coherent answer. “I just got off work. Closed tonight.”

Surprised, his eyebrows shot into his forehead. “What are you doing that has you working until midnight?”

“I work at Atra, the ink shop two doors down.”

“Oh,” he started and then stopped. “I thought you were working at a marketing firm.”

A tendril of pleasure sprang to life at the idea of Finn keeping track of me. We may have been friends once, but my sister was the connecting thread. And when she’d snapped their tie, Finn and I had drifted apart like florets from a blown dandelion.

He’d floated one way and I’d floated another. We’d lived in the same city going on three years now—since he got back from attending an out of town university—but the first time I’d seen him since he and Ivy had broken up had been at his father’s funeral a month ago.

“No, I was downsized but I still do freelance design work for them and a couple other companies, but my primary job is commissioned artwork at Atra. I also help around the shop, doing bookings and stuff. Tonight I had a late consultation with a friend of Tucker’s. He owns the shop,” I explained and then shut up, not wanting to ramble.

Finn nodded as if he found this interesting. “Sounds like you are putting your talent to good use. I always thought your work was tremendous.”

“Thanks. So what brings you here?”

He looked around. The man hunched over his coffee at the counter hadn’t moved. “I just got off work too.”

“I thought you were flipping houses?”

“Like you, I had a change in jobs.” His voice was grim. It didn’t take a genius to guess the change wasn’t a good one like mine was. Or maybe he was just angry about life right now, which he had every right to be.

“I know this sounds like a stupid Hallmark card, but it does get better.” I couldn’t hold myself back any longer. I placed my hand over his folded ones. “I promise.”

He tilted his head back, and his eyes fluttered closed, his ridiculously long lashes feathering across the top of his cheeks. Was he shutting out the pain or me? Or everything?

After long moments of silence, so long and so quiet that I could hear the hum of the refrigeration unit that held bottles of soda and beer behind the cash register, he spoke. “When I was thirteen, my dog Hunter died. Dad and I had bought him when I was four. He’d developed some kind of doggy liver disease, and we had to put him down. That was the worst kind of pain, I thought. But that was like a pin prick, while Dad’s death is like a dull knife dragging itself across my body one painful inch at a time.”

I bit down on my lip so I didn’t cry in front of him. I remembered that pain, and hated that someone I cared about had to suffer it too. “I’m not going to say it’s easy to get over a loss like that; only that it does happen—eventually.”

He snorted, a rough and unhappy sound. “I have been drinking. Not going to lie about that.” His eyes opened halfway, which was probably for the best. The piercing blue came off as too beautiful to be real and too mesmerizing to look away. “But not tonight. Tonight I decided to throw my bottles against the wall instead of drinking them, and because I’m a stupid fuck, I failed to realize I was standing in the splash zone.”

The food arrived before I could respond. He pulled a napkin from the tabletop dispenser and shoved half his fries onto it. “Eat or I won’t be able to.”

Obediently I put a fry into my mouth and watched him dig in. Grief or no grief, he was still eating, which was a good sign. And he didn’t seem drunk. No slurred words, no inappropriate comments.

“Sorry I jumped to conclusions,” I said after polishing off another fry.

“Don’t be. With your past, I can see why you’d be concerned,” he said between bites. My past. He was referring to dealing with my sister’s addictions, which had spiraled out of control after our parents died when she was nineteen.

“She’s better now,” I said. “If you were wondering.”

“Really?” Disbelief was clear in every long drawn-out letter.

“Really. She hit a bad place shortly after her release, but she’s been clean for…” I counted in my head, “almost thirty days.”

“That’s good. Good for her and for you.” He popped the rest of the burger into his mouth and washed it down with the entire glass of water.

“Did you chew that or inhale it?” I laughed, remembering the days he’d linger in our kitchen eating anything and everything Mom would cook.

“I haven’t eaten since noon so if I could have just pressed it into my face and absorbed it via osmosis, I would have.” We shared a laugh, just a small one, but I was breathless by the end. His smile was too much for me, and it was the first one I’d seen from him for so long. It lit up his eyes and revealed the deep creases on the corners of his mouth and his even, perfect white teeth.

“No burgers on the west side of the city?” I joked to disguise my growing and uncomfortable desire for him. Now was not the time nor the place. He was not ever to be mine.

His grin grew wider. “Why do you think I’m here? Trying to avoid being seen by my roommates. I don’t know if you met them at the funeral?” I shook my head. I’d only had eyes for Finn. “I live with four of them. Adam Rees is one.” Adam was a friend of Finn’s from high school. He had a famous father. That was about all I remembered, but I nodded anyway, and he continued. “Their idea of helping me cope is to get me involved in increasingly dangerous activities.”

“What have your roommates made you do?”

“What haven’t they made me do is the question. I’ve been to strip clubs, paintballing, ATVing, a firing range, rock climbing, fishing.” Finn tapped a finger on the table to punctuate each activity. “I’ve got two former Marines living with me, and I think they’re planning to push me out of an airplane. So I can’t go home.”

“You can stay with me,” I said with a nonchalant shrug.

His eyes drifted around my face, lingering on my lips and then dropping lower. I could feel my unbound breasts tighten under the cotton of my T-shirt. I hated bras and was small and perky enough I could get away without wearing them. The only problem was I had fat, eraser-sized nipples, and right now they were pointing directly at Finn. He stared at them for what seemed like an eternity.

“Is that right?” His voice was husky.

The air in the room disappeared, and I barely had enough breath to croak out, “No, Ivy’s there. She and I live together now. Have for—” I paused, not wanting to bring up her recent incarceration, “—for a couple of months,” I finished awkwardly.

He made a noise in the back of his throat, one I couldn’t decipher. “So have you been seeing anyone?”

I didn’t know what to make of that. Why was he at all remotely interested in my love life?

“No, not recently. Not since—”—” I broke off again.

“Not since Ivy got out of prison,” he said dryly.

“You heard?”

“I heard.” He was done with the subject of Ivy and that was okay with me. It made me uncomfortable to talk about her while I was perving on her ex-boyfriend.

Anxious to change the subject, I asked, “What about you?”

“I don’t think what I’ve been doing constitutes as seeing anyone. Not since my dad died. Not feeling it.” His blue gaze pinned me against the booth. I heard what he wasn’t saying out loud. He had been sleeping around and from the interested way he was eyeing me, the suggestion was I could be next. “I’ve been trying not to feel for a while but tonight? Maybe tonight should be different.”

It wasn’t a question; it was an invitation. And all the teenage feelings of longing and lust rushed over me until I was dry mouthed and full of want.

He looked out the window, considering something, and then back toward me. “You had a crush on me for a long time. Am I taking advantage of you?”

I didn’t pretend I was confused about what he was asking, even though it was a bit mortifying to be confronted by my unreciprocated feelings. I shook my head. “No. I think it’s the other way around.”

“It’s not. Why don’t we get out of this place?” He stood and threw two twenties on the table and waited for me to lead the way out.

I was acutely aware of his large frame behind me as I walked carefully across the tiled floor to the entrance. The heat of his body nearly burned me as he pressed against my back to reach around me with a large, work-roughened hand to push the glass door open.

He placed a hand on my lower back and guided me to his truck. It was a monster of a thing with big black tires and a menacing silver grill.

“You really expect me to climb into this thing?”

He opened the door and in one swift motion lifted me onto the seat. “I forgot what a bitty thing you are.”

“I’m not small. You’re just very tall. With a very large truck.”

His hands didn’t release my waist; instead, he moved closer. I opened my legs to make space for him.

“Don’t worry, Winter. Everything’s going to fit fine.” With a firm hand on my neck, he drew my face down to his. I heard his lips part before I felt them press against mine.

A thousand thoughts tumbled in my head. Would Ivy be okay with this? Should I really be taking advantage of a grief-stricken man? How were his lips soft and firm at the same time? Could I have an orgasm from just kissing? Was this what love felt like?

His mouth took mine in a firm possession—no hesitation. He wanted this if not me. And I took what he gave me because when did a girl ever get to kiss the boy she’d crushed over for years? Hardly ever.

Only in the movies.

I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and dug my hands into his hair, giving into every desperate desire I’d always tried to stomp down.

He groaned and pulled me tighter to him, the seat somehow perfectly situated at groin level so I felt the strong, heated evidence of his desire through our jeans. He rubbed his tongue along the edges of mine. He outlined my lips and then stroked the flat of his tongue against the roof of my mouth.

Even if I hadn’t had a crush on him, I would have been weak-kneed. Finn O’Malley knew how to kiss. He wasn’t just thrusting his tongue into me, he was exploring me, learning me, tasting me.

A large hand cupped one breast and squeezed it tightly. I cried out, part in pleasure and part in surprise at how the slight pain felt so good.

“Too rough?” he asked, pulling away.

I shook my head. He gave a half smile and yanked down the vee of my T-shirt until my bare breast popped out. The overhead light had gone off in the truck, but there was enough moonlight that anyone coming out of the café could probably see what we were doing.

But any concern I had ended when he placed his mouth over my ripe nipple. With the same lavish care he took kissing me, he explored every inch of my breast. The top received a dozen wet kisses and tiny nips. The areola he licked thoroughly, and the nipple was sucked on so hard and with such long draws that I felt as if a string connected my nipples to my pussy. A string I hadn’t known existed.

While he sucked, he made low growls of delight that fueled my lust. I squeezed my legs around his hips, drawing him closer, drawing him inside where only he could relieve the painful ache between my legs.

“Fuck,” he rasped, breaking our connection and backing away. The cool spring air made my taut nipple tighten even more. “Not here.” He gently straightened my T-shirt and then tucked me inside the truck.

We drove a short distance to a chain link fence that opened upon a press of a remote.

“What is this place?” I tried to catch my breath. Peering out the window into the dimly lit night, there appeared to be nothing but bare land filled with machinery and surrounded by fences. Beyond it was the river.

“My new job. Left to me courtesy of Mr. Sean O’Malley.” There was a faint twinge of bitterness. “Dad wanted to stamp his signature on the city and chose this downtown revitalization project. But then he died and left it to me, so I don’t know whether to love or hate him.”

“It’s okay to feel both. Love and hate,” I clarified unnecessarily.

“I suppose you’re right.” He stopped the truck in front of a trailer.

“You can cry you know. I did a lot of that.”

“I like to have my emotional release come a different way.”

“Like what?”

He shifted in the truck seat to look at me. His hand reached out to cup my face. “You’ve grown into a very beautiful woman. I’d very much like to take you inside the trailer and fuck you against the wall.”

“That’s kind of a coarse invitation.”

His thumb ran over my lower lip, using some of the moisture of my mouth to wet my lip. I shivered, and a grim but knowing smile spread across his face.

“It’s the only kind I’ve got in me. All the tender emotion has been eaten up by my dad’s death. I want to lose myself in you, Winter.”

He got out of the truck and opened my door, giving me an expectant look. Was I in or out?

I knew what he was saying. It wasn’t that he loved me, wanted to date me, or wanted me to be his girlfriend. He’d probably be disappointed if he saw me next to him tomorrow morning. He’d lie awake wondering if he had to chew off his own arm to escape. He was offering a hard fuck in his trailer, not lovemaking in his bed.

I knew all of this and still wanted him.

Maybe the sex would burn away his mystery, and I wouldn’t internally sigh when I heard his name. Maybe it wouldn’t. But it was a risk worth taking, and I planned to get my money’s worth.

“How many condoms do you have?” I answered boldly.

His eyes glittered in the moonlight. “How many do I need?”

“Depends on your stamina and recovery time.”

“Honey, you’re going to have a hard time walking out of the trailer when we’re done.”

My heart ached at his words, but I took his hand and followed him inside.

Synopsis

The girl who’s had everyone meets the boy who has no one.
For Bella, the sweet-talking, free-loving, hip-checking student manager of the Harkness men’s hockey team, sex is a second language. She’s used to being fluent where others stutter, and the things people say behind her back don’t (often) bother her. So she can’t understand why her smoking hot downstairs neighbor has so much trouble staying friends after their spontaneous night together. She knows better than to worry about it, but there’s something in those espresso eyes that makes her second guess herself.
Rafe is appalled with himself for losing his virginity in a drunken hookup. His strict Catholic upbringing always emphasized loving thy neighbor—but not with a bottle of wine and a box of condoms. The result is an Ivy League bout of awkwardness. But when Bella is leveled by a little bad luck and a downright sinister fraternity prank, it’s Rafe who is there to pick up the pieces.
Bella doesn’t want Rafe’s help, and she’s through with men. Too bad the undeniable spark that crackles between the two of them just can’t be snuffed.

shameless excerpt

I heard the band start to play the classic one-two Merengue rhythm that I’d heard my whole life. On the dance floor, the energy picked up as the geezers began to move to the faster beat.

“Let’s go,” I said, standing up. I offered Bella my hand.

But Bella shook her head. Even worse, she scooted her chair toward the wall.

“Don’t leave me hanging,” I said, my hand still waiting in the air. “Come on now. Nobody puts Bella in a corner.”

On the other side of the table, Bella’s sister snorted into her white wine.

Bella rolled her eyes. Hard. “You did not just quote Dirty Dancing.”

I leaned down near Bella’s ear. “I did. Now get your ass out of that chair, like the girl in the movie, or I’ll have to put you in a fireman’s hold.”

Her mouth tight, Bella stood up. Not one to waste an opportunity, I clasped her hand, tugging her onto the dance floor. When we were right in the center, I put one hand onto Bella’s waist and took her opposite hand in mine. She was as stiff as a piece of wood. “Shake it off, chica. This is supposed to be fun.”

“Your job tonight was to make my life less embarrassing. Not more.”

“I am doing that. We’re going to be the best looking dancers on this floor, and everyone in this mausoleum is going to wonder how I got so lucky as to be here with you. Now listen to this rhythm, okay? Just step to the beat. And let your hips absorb the motion.” I began to move to the music. The merengue is a Dominican dance, and every kid in my neighborhood can merengue before his fifth birthday. It’s just not that complicated.

With nervous eyes, Bella began to move.

“Use these hips,” I prompted, touching the silky fabric of her dress. As I watched, she loosened up a tiny fraction. “Yes! But even more. You look great. I wouldn’t steer you wrong. And think of pressing the balls of your feet into the floor.”

Biting her lip, Bella moved with me.

“That’s it! See? Nothing to it.” Just like that, we had a proper merengue going on.

“Can I sit down yet?” Bella asked.

“Not even close,” I laughed. “See, I knew you could move.”

Bella pouted. “We’ve seen each other’s moves, Rafe.”

She lifted her eyes, and the heat in them went straight to my dick.

Jesucristo. That was the trouble with getting so close to Bella. I was always going to be susceptible to her. Anything she did to remind me of that night was always going to knock me right over.

“Ha.” She said. “I finally found a way to shut you up.” Bella put a little more effort into her merengue then, looking smug.

818GCay3WHL._SL1500_The Year We Fell Down – Book 1

The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves has someone else. What now?

She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.

Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He’s way out of Corey’s league.

Also, he’s taken.

Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the “gimp ghetto” of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.

They’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she’s falling. Hard.

But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won’t, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness — one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who’s afraid to love her back.

81J5WH4NrbL._SL1500_The Year We Hid Away – Book 2

She’s hiding something big. He’s hiding someone small.
Scarlet Crowley’s life was torn apart the day father was arrested for unspeakable crimes. Now the shock has worn off, but not the horror.

It’s a safe bet that Scarlet is the only first year at Harkness College who had to sneak past TV news trucks parked on her front lawn just to leave town. But college will be Scarlet’s fresh start.

Clutching a shiny new student ID — with a newly minted name on it — she leaves it all behind. Even if it means lying to the boy she’s falling for.

Bridger McCaulley is a varsity hockey star known for being a player both on and off the ice. But a sobering family crisis takes that all away. Protecting his sister means a precarious living arrangement and constant deception. The only bright spot in his week is the few sensual, stolen hours he spends with Scarlet.
The two form a tentative relationship based on the understanding that some things must always be held back. But when grim developments threaten them both, going it alone just won’t work anymore. And if they can’t learn to trust one another now, the families who let them down will take everything they’ve struggled to keep.

71xMq-VxtUL._SL1500_Blond Date – Book 2.5

A blind date. A nervous sorority girl. A mean-spirited fraternity prank. What could go wrong?

As a sorority pledge, there are commandments that Katie Vickery must live by. One: thou shalt not show up for the party without a date. Two: the guy shall be an athlete, preferably an upperclassman.

Unfortunately, Katie just broke up with her jerkface football player boyfriend. Even worse, her last encounter with him resulted in utter humiliation. She’d rather hide under the bed than attend a party where he’ll be.

Yet staying home would mean letting him win.

Enjoying herself tonight was out of the question. She could only hope to get through the evening without her blind date noticing that he was spending the evening with a crazy person.

Andrew Baschnagel is living proof that nice guys don’t finish first. He’s had his eye on Katie since the moment her long legs waltzed into his art history class. So when her roommate sets Andy up to be Katie’s date, he’d be crazy to say no. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a lot of practice with either girls or parties. Yet.

81cohD5ne1L._SL1500_The Understatement Of The Year – Book 3

What happened in high school stayed in high school. Until now.

Five years ago, Michael Graham betrayed the only person who ever really knew him. Since then, he’s made an art of hiding his sexual orientation from everyone. Including himself.

So it’s a shock when his past strolls right into the Harkness College locker room, sporting a bag of hockey gear and the same slow smile that had always rendered Graham defenseless. For Graham, there is only one possible reaction: total, debilitating panic. With one loose word, the team’s new left wing could destroy Graham’s life as he knows it.

John Rikker is stuck being the new guy. Again. And it’s worse than usual, because the media has latched onto the story of the only “out” player in Division One hockey. As the satellite trucks line the sidewalk outside the rink, his new teammates are not amused.

And one player in particular looks sick every time he enters the room.

Rikker didn’t exactly expect a warm welcome from Graham. But the guy won’t even meet his eyes. From the looks of it, his former… best friend / boyfriend / whatever isn’t doing so well. He drinks too much and can’t focus during practice.

Either the two loneliest guys on the team will self destruct from all the new pressures in their lives, or they can navigate the pain to find a way back to one another. To say that it won’t be easy is the Understatement of the Year.

Warning: unlike the other books in this series, this heartbreaking love story is about two guys. Contains sexual situations, dance music, snarky t-shirts and a poker-playing grandmother.

Synopsis

Taz:

My life is finally perfect. My dreams have all come true. I’m where I want to be with the bureau; having the career I’ve been planning since I did my stint in the military. I’m married to the one and only woman I’ve ever loved; my heart beats for her alone. Together we’ve made beautiful babies that I adore. I’m thirty-three years old and I’m complete.

Then one day, it all changes. Slate recruits me for a temporary assignment that is underneath the radar for a reason. The bureau hasn’t sanctioned it as a priority, but Slate feels it is because of who is involved: Sue Ellen Reynard. Yeah, remember her?

Lindsey:

Our lives were perfect. Taz and I had everything we’d ever hoped for: family, careers and an everlasting devotion to one another. Suddenly nothing is the same. In a single moment, my biggest fear is realized by one phone call from Slate: an ‘agent is missing’.

My agent; my Taz . . .

This is just the beginning of our long journey. Will things ever be the same again?

Portrait of a handsome young man leaning against a rock

Excerpt

As soon as the nurse left, I had another visitor.

My wife.

Lindsey.

I hadn’t seen her since the day she’d left in tears and my alleged younger sister had chewed my ass out for my boorish behavior.

“Hey,” I said softly, giving her a smile. Hell, if I could choose only one thing from my past to resurface in my memory it would be anything or everything having to do with her. She was beautiful and it wasn’t hard to see why I’d been drawn to her.

“Trace,” she said, coming over to take a seat in the chair closest to my hospital bed. “You look better than you did the last time I was here.”

Yeah. Trace is my real name. Learned that a week or two ago.

“It’s been awhile,” I replied. “I’m sorry if I scared you off, Lindsey. I’m trying like hell to remember.”

“It’s nothing you can help,” she replied quickly, giving me a weak smile. “All we can do is work with what we have, I suppose.”

She’d brought some photo albums with her. “I thought maybe we could look at some pictures together, that is, if you feel like it.”

“Sure,” I said, “My doctor recommended doing just that.”

“Okay, well let’s start with this one then,” she said, pulling the one from the bottom. “We’ll take this in chronological order, how’s that?”

And she opened the album and began showing me pictures that had been taken five years prior. She pointed out my mother and father, her best friend Darcy who I recognized from her earlier visit with her husband–and my half-brother, Easton. I saw Slate in many of the pictures, along with his wife who was also Lindsey’s mother. Very pretty. I could picture Slate with her.

“How did we meet?” I asked, and noticed a blush cross over her face.

“Well, I knew you because of Mom and Slate–but we actually didn’t get involved with one another until after they got married. I…uh, I kind of got toasted at their reception. You were nice enough to offer me a ride home, and well…I threw up all over your truck.”

I laughed at this and, for some reason, I loved the fact that given the choice, Lindsey could have provided a much more appealing story of how we met and I wouldn’t have known the difference. Yet she put the truth out there, no matter how disgusting it was. “God, I hope I wasn’t an ass about it.”

She laughed too and it was music to my ears. “Not at all. You were actually very sweet about it. You took me back to your place, put me in the shower, gave me some of your clean clothes to wear, insisted I brush my teeth and gargle, and then put me to bed.”

Michel’s Review

Taz is the latest release in the G-Men series by Andrea Smith.  I have to say this book took me completely by surprised and rendered me speechless.  Andrea did something gutsy, unheard of , and risky.  She took this couple to a complete new level.  They were already living their HEA.  Readers were happy with their story.  They were invested in this couple’s journey.  This couple built a solid foundation and were living the dream.  Then with one stroke of the pen ( or should I say keyboard) Andrea brought their world crumbling down.  It was like a tornado whooshing through their life and leaving despair and devastation.  The only thing they had to hang onto was the solid foundation they had worked so diligently to build.

The book starts out with Taz going about his normal day.  He is reveling in the family he and Lindsey have created.  He adores his wife and loves his children.  Life is good until he gets one phone call.  A phone call that makes him meet Slate for a beer.  One sip of beer and his life is changed.  He is recruited for a sensitive mission because of his background, his expertise, and the person the FBI is hunting.  It will be the beginning of the storm that will tear his life apart.  It could ruin his relationship with Lindsey and destroy his family.

Without saying too much more and giving a ton of spoilers away I will say this.  Taz said he would of never taken this mission if he knew what was going to happen to his life.  He would of walked away.  Hindsight is definitely not conducive in this situation.  The moment he took this mission the reader had a sense that something was going to go very wrong.

The emotional trauma that all the characters go through is devastating.  The destruction of Taz and Lindsey’s life broke my heart.  Andrea had the guts to break these very strong people.  But they reared their heads and proved to her that they were stronger than what she originally created.  They were not going to let her take away their HEA.  Instead they redefined the meaning and made it more. They rebuilt their love, reassembled their life, and made their own destiny.

I have to commend Andrea for the bold writing.  It takes a talented author to pull this off.  I was truly amazed.

I highly recommend Taz by Andrea Smith.  Although it is part of the G-Men series, I think a reader new to this series could easily pick this book up and become as involved in the story as the seasoned reader of this series.

About Andrea Smith

andrea smith-2I was born and raised in southern Ohio, and with the exception of a brief stint in Dallas, TX, have been an Ohioan most of my life. My dream has always been to write a novel, and back in the early eighties I tried to do just that, having been influenced by authors such as Kathleen Woodiwiss, Johanna Lindsey, Rosemary Rogers and Laurie McBain. I remember writing to all of them through their listed publishers, and the only response I received was from Johanna Lindsey (who lived in Hawaii at the time.

Ms. Lindsey advised me to continue with my dream; and to submit to various publishers again and again. Of course, at that time, publishing e-books yourself was not on the horizon; there were vanity publishing houses of course, but she advised me to avoid those.

So my dream was put on the back-burner for more than 25 years until June of 2012 when suddenly I no longer had a reason not to write a novel. My sons were grown; I found myself without a career (blessedly) and the creative juices flowed once again.

I finished my first novel, “Maybe Baby” in September of 2012; the next two books in the “Baby Series” titled “Baby Love” and “Be My Baby” were published in early 2013. I learned a lot in my first endeavor with self-publishing. I’ve made so many friends as a result that it is over-whelming.

In the spring of 2013, I had an idea for a different type of Alpha, and wrote Book #1 of the “G-Man” Series, titled “Diamond Girl.” This book was well-received, and I followed it with Book #2, “Love Plus One.” These are stand-alone books.

I am finally doing what I love and I sincerely appreciate the wonderful readers who provide feedback and take the time to comment. I hope that with each book, my writing has grown and improved as I strive to publish quality fiction..

Excerpt

His laughter, it didn’t really sound the smallest bit amused. “Christ. You’re done here.”

“Ah, no. I’m actually not. Now see, this is where we have a problem.” I folded my arms. Then unfolded them because like fuck I’d look defensive. He was the one in the wrong, not me. “You’re not prepared to take me, or my feelings, seriously. What you want is to hide away in Mr. Too Cool for Commitment land and just play with my affections when it suits you. Okay, I’ve accepted that. But none of that means it’s okay for you to come in here and act like you’re the boss of me. None of it.”

“That so?” he asked, leaning down so that we were almost nose to nose.

“That’s so, baby.” I play-punched him in the shoulder, which it should be noted, I barely came up to. Okay, so maybe the alcohol on a mostly empty stomach had made me slightly/lots braver/sillier. “So why don’t you take your little caveman jealous tantrum bullshit somewhere else. See, I do this funny thing I like to refer to as whatever the fuck I want. Understand?”

He just stared.

“And as pretty as you are with your beard and your muscles, you are too damn tricky and . . . complicated and shit for me.”

“I am?”

“Yes, you are. Are you finally seeing my point here?”

“You bet.”

“Excellent. So take your hotness elsewhere, kind sir. I want no part of it!” Huh. I had so told him. Drunken bravado was the best.

Michel’s Review

This is a bittersweet moment writing the final review for the Stage Dive Series by Kylie Scott.  Readers have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for Ben’s book to arrive.  At the same time I think they were dreading the release day because we knew this was the last book in this phenomenal series.

I can honestly say that Deep was the perfect ending for our favorite band, Stage Dive, and the final tour.  We’ve witnessed a deep feeling poet &  lead guitarist shed the strings that held him back to find what true love is really about.  We’ve rode the ADHD ,fueled my pure sugar hyped up on steroids crazy train, otherwise known as Mal Ericsson, the highly adrenalized drummer for Stage Dive ( still my all time favorite book boyfriend).  We’ve gave the finger and the hi ho to the egotistical, self centered lead singer and forgave his transgressions.  Yes, we wanted the jerk to find happiness and love.  Through it all has been the quiet, strong and steady bass player.  He rolls with the punches, lends a hand when necessary, never rocks the boat, and always plays with perfection.  He is easy going, mild mannered, and a carefree spirit.  He has a bit of wanderlust, a big dose of commitment issues, and no clue how to be in a relationship.  He has quite  a mystery throughout the series and peaked the reader’s interest.

Ben is going to steal the readers hearts.  This man is a swoon worthy rock- n- roll fantasy wrapped up pure hunkiness and manly hair.  As we all know, he is the beat and rhythm that keeps the band’s music flowing to perfection.  His perfect beat and timing is going to rock the readers hearts.

As we have all suspected, Ben and Lizzy were definitely attracted to one another.  All those text messages Ben seemed to be wrapped up in, you can only guess who he was texting.   When the Elvis Vegas Wedding binds another Stage Dive couple, Ben and Lizzy make their own coupling.  A one night stand results in the appearance of Little Bean, otherwise known as baby on the way.  What happened in Vegas did not stay in Vegas.

Ben’s not ready to settle down.  He doesn’t want commitment.  He does want to be a stand up guy.  He respects Lizzy and wants to be the friend she needs.  But is he really ready to be a father?

Meanwhile backstage, other members of the band are up to all kinds of good & bad things.  Jimmy and Lena are also expecting.  Jimmy wants to railroad Lena and take care of her.  Lena just wants to kill Jimmy ( not really),  Could another wedding be in the near future?  And Mal, well besides teaching Killer (the puppy) how to kiss with his tongue, he wants to kill Ben.  Trouble is brewing between the band members and it is not pretty.  All of this is happening just as they are starting a sixteen week world wide tour.  This is a tour to go down in Stage Dive history.

The romance between Ben and Lizzy is a slow build that becomes something absolutely beautiful.  It is a wonder to watch them both change for the better.  It is a wonder getting to know who Ben really is beneath his easy going exterior.

Just as it looks like Ben and Lizzy are going to have their perfect Stage Dive Happily Ever After, the story will take another turn.  An old nemesis will pop up with her claws sharpened and ruin the perfect tour.  The Stage Dive series will go full circle and it will be up to Ben to stop the vicious cycle.

The Stage Dive Series is one of my all time favorite series.  Kylie Scott has created magic with these colorful musicians and their leading ladies.  She has given us humor, heartbreak, witty dialogue, interesting strong leading ladies, a tight knit family, and romance that makes the heart beat out of control.  Each and every book is a 5+ Star Book.

Don’t miss out on the final show for Stage Dive.  Read Deep…it will rock your soul.

“Where have you been?” My sister rushed forward, catching me up in a tight hug. “I’ve been trying to call you all day. We checked everywhere and couldn’t find you.”

“Sorry. I just needed some alone time.” I squeezed her back, unable to stop from smiling. The thought of Anne turning her back on me had scared me more than I liked to admit.

“Well, I get you might want that.” She stepped back. “But you could have told someone.”

“You can’t just disappear like that.” And Ben kept right on frowning. “Shit, Liz, you’re pregnant.”

“Don’t upset her,” snapped Anne.

Ben ignored her. “I don’t know what the hell’s going on in your head. But you need to let me know where you are.”

My eyebrows went up and my mouth opened, ready to rip him a new one.

“She doesn’t answer to you. She’ll let you know if and when she decides to let you know,” said Mal, laying down the law to his bandmate before turning my way. “You will text your sister next time you decide to go wandering for a day, understood?”

My mouth, it still hung open.

“Christ, man.” Over and over, Ben’s hands rolled into tight fists before releasing again. “Can you cut the shit and get off my back for a fucking minute?”

“Don’t swear at him.” My usually sensible and staid sister poked a finger dead center in Ben’s broad chest. “You’re the one that caused this mess, thank you very much. She might still be a little young and naive, but you’re definitely old enough to know better.”

“That’s right.” Standing about as tall as a skyscraper, despite only coming up to Ben’s nose, Mal stared him down. Or up. Whatever. “This is a family matter. You can leave, thanks.”

Synopsis

He may very well be the perfect ex…

Isaac McKnight has had enough loss in his life to know never to take anything for granted. So when the perfectly-imperfect-woman-for-him puts an end to their relationship out of the blue, it’s Isaac that makes sure they remain friends. Now a year later, whether it’s at his gym or her brewpub, or the dog park they visit every weekend–though neither of them own a dog–he and Xoey are steadily getting sucked deeper into buddy-zone galaxy, with its dangerous proximity to watch-me-settle-down-with-someone-else abyss. It’s a reality he’s resigned himself to. That is…until one drunken confession changes everything.

But she’s looking for the perfect ‘oh’

For Xoey Montenegro, history has taught her that sometimes, it’s Prince Charming who vanishes without a trace. And fairytale love? Highly overrated. Heck, give her a real and perfect ‘oh’ over that fantasy any day. So as far as rock-solid tequila-fueled plans for her love life go, coming up with a match-finding formula based on the qualities of the men responsible for her three most epic ohs seems brilliant. Except for the fact that one-third of her genius little man-quation is all about her friend Isaac. Actually, more than a third if Xoey were being honest with herself–which she’s not. Because full honesty would require thinking not just about how perfect Isaac really is, but also about how perfect the fourth epic oh she’s kept buried deep in her past once was.

An easy enough thing to keep ignoring…until her past isn’t past tense anymore.

Isaac plopped down beside her on the bench. “Hey, that’s a cute puppy. I’m adding him to my list,” he declared, planting a warm kiss on her cheek, along with an icy cold cup of frozen coffee goodness in her hands.

Xoey wasn’t sure which was making her shiver.

“You have over two dozen dogs on that list of yours. Unless your future wife is Mrs. Doolittle, you’re going to have to start making some cuts to your future white picket fence pet,” she replied in an impressively steady tone. It had taken awhile after their break-up, but with time, Isaac’s lips on her skin no longer made her punch-drunk with lust.

Not outwardly, at least.

Sipping his piping hot black coffee, he nodded over at the fancy iced mocha drink he’d brought for her—or as he liked to call it, the milk and sugar with a splash of caffeine—and gave her a smug smile as he reached for the bag of doughnuts she’d brought for their breakfast.

The man knew her frighteningly well.

It had begun as a game a while back. He’d guess what she was selecting for their little weekly breakfast picnic, and bring the drinks he knew would pair with it. In the last few months, he’d only been wrong once.

Isaac munched on a doughnut thoughtfully and watched the puppy in question flopping along next to the engaged couple. “Nope, that one’s too cute. He’s staying on the list.” With a half shrug, he concluded, “I guess that means I’ll have to marry Mrs. Doolittle.”

Xoey was just plain shocked at the sharp bolt of pain she felt tearing through her chest over the joke.

“Hey, you okay, sweetie?”

Isaac squeezed her knee, a worried gaze running over her face and then lower.

To where her hand was pressed against her heart.

“Heartburn,” she fibbed, rubbing her chest the way she saw folks on antacid commercials do it.

Instantly, her bag of bacon doughnuts were yanked off her lap. “I knew these things were bad for you. You’re calling your doctor in the morning to get a check-up. Sometimes, heartburn is a symptom of something dangerous. In the meantime, I’m going to set you up with one of my trainers to get you on a cardio plan.” Reaching into her pocket, he pulled out her phone and entered her password to unlock it.

She peered over and saw him googling something. “What are you doing?”

“Checking to see if these cups of liquid sugar and caffeine over ice you drink can cause heart problems.” He read through the results for a minute and shook his head. “Apparently not, but better to switch to tea or just plain water to be safe.”

Intense hazel eyes proceeded to x-ray every inch of her body, while gentle, utterly masculine hands that every inch of her body still remembered stroked her back.

She released a jagged breath.

Which of course, he interpreted as her final descent toward the big, bright light at the end of the tunnel.

He gripped her hand. “Do you want me to take you to urgent care or the ER?”

“I’m fine, Isaac. Calm down.”

He did not look convinced.

He then proceeded to slide his fingers over to her wrist to check her pulse.

Oh God, the man was just too lovable sometimes.

“I lied, I don’t have heartburn,” she admitted, to stop what was clearly going to be a call to 911 in a bit.

A puzzled frown crossed his features, along with marked relief. “What’s going on, Xo?”

“I just…I was holding my heart because I was jealous. Of Mrs. Doolittle.” She snatched back her precious bacon doughnuts. “If you go off and have a few dozen puppies with Mrs. Doolittle, who’s going to come to the dog park with me every morning?” she threw in to make this less of a declaration of the heart. “I’m too old and set in my ways to break in a new weird friend who’ll get me the way you do.”

Silence.

Until warm, calloused fingers reached over and broke a piece of doughnut off.

After a few quiet moments of chewing, Isaac put his arm around her. “Can you imagine the industrial sized pooper scooper I’d have to buy to pick up after a few dozen dogs?” He shook his head. “I think Mrs. Doolittle and I would be doomed within the first week,” he lamented gravely. “Looks like you’ll be stuck with me for a bit longer, babe.”

Improbable promise coming from a catch like Isaac or not, Xoey held on to it tight like a security blanket.

Chapter One Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Business opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming.
—Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group

When her sister and brother-in-law said they wanted to talk to her at the diner Monday evening, Megan Kane assumed they were going to tell her they were finally expecting the niece or nephew she’d wanted for as long as they’d been married. But the words that came from Brett and Nina in stuttering, halting sentences had nothing to do with babies.

“Moving overseas.”

“Selling the diner.”

“So sorry to do this to you.”

“It was an amazing opportunity.”

“We couldn’t say no.”

“You can come with us.” Nina seemed crushed to be delivering this news to her “baby” sister, who was almost twenty-eight and hardly a baby anymore. “I’d love that. We could run around and explore together while Brett is at work. It would be so fun.”

Megan shook off the shock and found her voice. “No. You’ve been taking care of me since you were twenty-two, Neen. It’s time to go live your life. I’ll be fine.”

“We really do mean it when we say you should come with us,” Brett said. He was always so kind to her, never once in all these years acting as if her tight bond with his wife was a problem for him.

“I can’t do that. I can’t crash your party. I’ve been around your necks long enough as it is.”

“You’re hardly around our necks, Megan,” Nina said. “We could have so much fun! Would you think about it before you automatically say no? Please?”

“Fine.” Megan said what her sister needed to hear. “I’ll think about it.”

“Great!” Nina said, beaming with pleasure at the small victory.

“If you decide to stay here, we’ll help you find another job,” Brett said. “Maybe the new owners of the diner would want to keep you on. They’d be crazy not to.”

He’d been a terrific brother-in-law to her since he married her sister nine years ago. A teacher at a nearby boys’ prep school, he’d apparently applied for overseas positions in the past but they’d never materialized until now.

Work at Nina’s Diner without Nina? Unthinkable. “I’ll figure something out. You guys don’t need to worry about me.”

“Of course we’ll worry about you, Meg.” Nina reached for her sister’s hand across the table. “I don’t know how not to worry about you.”

“It’s probably time I got a life of my own.” Megan tried to stay calm even as she panicked on the inside. Not see Nina every day? Unbearable. “Mom and Dad would be horrified if they knew I was still living in the garage apartment.”

“They’d be proud of you.”

“No, they’d be proud of you, but you deserve it. You’ve created such a wonderful business here, and now you have this fantastic opportunity to travel. I’d never hold you guys back from doing what you want.”

Brett’s relief was so visible he practically sagged under the weight of it. Obviously, they’d worried about telling her their news. “You really can come with us if you want to, Megan,” he said. “It would be great to have you in France.”

“I’d love to come visit while you’re there, but this is home.” In reality, Nina was home to her, not Butler or the house where they’d once lived with their parents, but Megan kept those thoughts to herself.

“You said you’d think about it!” Nina said.

“Neen, I can’t just go traipsing off to France, as fun as that sounds. I need to figure out my life and what I’m going to do with it. I can’t do that in France. I don’t want either of you to worry about me. I swear I’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure?” Nina asked tearfully. “You’d tell me if you didn’t mean that, wouldn’t you?”

“I’m very sure.” Megan kept her emotions out of it—for now anyway. “This could turn out to be a good thing for me. It’ll give me the kick in the butt I’ve needed to move on.” Megan had been marching in place for more than ten years, since the snowy night they lost their parents in a car crash during her senior year of high school.

Nina had been her rock ever since, acting as mother, father and big sister all rolled into one. The sisters had held on to each other for all these years, and the thought of everyday life without Nina was unfathomable to Megan.

“If you agree, we’re going to rent the house,” Brett said, “but the garage apartment is all yours for as long as you want or need it. We told the rental agent the garage wasn’t part of the deal.”

“Of course I agree. No sense the house sitting vacant when you could be making some money.” Her brother-in-law’s sweetness nearly broke her emotional dam, but she refused to cry in front of them. Since there were going to be tears—and lots of them—she had to get out of there immediately. No way would she make them feel bad about something they were so excited about. Knowing she was on borrowed time where the tears were concerned, Megan gathered up her belongings and stood. “I’ll see you guys in the morning.”

“Let me drive you home,” Nina said.

“That’s okay. I could use the fresh air after being inside all afternoon.” They’d used their afternoon and evening “off” to do their monthly deep clean of the diner.

“You’re sure you’re all right?” Nina asked.

Megan bent to kiss her sister’s cheek. “I’m fine, and I’m thrilled for both of you.”

Nina held her tight for a minute. “Love you, Meggie.”

Megan couldn’t remember the last time Nina had called her by her childhood nickname. “Love you, too.”

Feeling as if she’d been set adrift, untethered from the one sure thing in her life, Megan stepped out of the diner, taking a moment to breathe in the fresh, clean early-autumn air. The tears she’d managed to contain in front of Nina and Brett broke loose in sobs that had her looking for a place to hide until the storm passed.

She crossed the street and ducked behind the Green Mountain Country Store, planning to hide out until Brett and Nina left for home.

The last thing she wanted was for them to see her crying, and nothing short of a miracle would help her keep it together tonight.

After another twelve-hour marathon in front of the computer, Hunter Abbott stood and stretched out the kinks in his shoulders and back. As the chief financial officer for the Green Mountain Country Store and other Abbott family businesses, Hunter worked pretty much all the time. If it weren’t for the pressing need for food that his body demanded every few hours, he’d probably work around the clock.

It wasn’t like he had anything better to do. And wasn’t that a sad, pathetic fact of his life?

His stomach let out an unholy growl that had him checking the time on his computer. Nine ten. With the diner closed today, that left pizza as his only option in town at this hour. He dialed the number to Kingdom Pizza from memory and ordered a small veggie and a salad. If he was resorting to eating junk, at least it was somewhat healthy. Before his twin sister, Hannah, had remarried over the summer, Hunter might’ve headed for her house to bum some dinner and conversation. But with Nolan now living with Hannah and the two of them in starry-eyed newly wedded bliss, Hunter steered clear.

He turned off his computer and glanced at the stack of files still awaiting his attention. Bring them home or leave them for tomorrow? After a brief internal debate, he shut off the light and left them. His tank was running on empty, and tomorrow would bring more of the same.

In the outer office, he was surprised to find the light still on in his sister Ella’s office. He went over to knock on her door. “You’re working late.”

“As are you.”

“Except I always do. What’s your excuse?”

“Getting some new products entered into the system, and dealing with a pile of paperwork that never seems to get smaller no matter what I do.”

“I hear you there. So much for being self-employed, huh?”

She smiled at him, but he noted a hint of sadness in her eyes that caught him by surprise. Ella was one of the most joyful people he’d ever known—always happy and upbeat.

“Everything okay?”

“Sure. Why do you ask?”

“You just seemed . . . I don’t know . . . sad or something for a second there.”

“I’m fine. No need to worry.”

“Okay then.” Hunter took a step back, planning to leave, but there it was again—the sadness he’d seen before. “You know if there’s anything wrong, you can come to me, right? We may see each other a thousand times a day, but I’m right over there if you need me. No matter what it is.”

“Thank you, Hunter. That’s very sweet of you. I know you want to take care of everything for all of us, but some things . . . Well, some things can’t be managed. They are what they are.”

More confused than ever, Hunter wasn’t sure whether he should stay and try to force the issue or give her some space to deal with whatever was bothering her. “I’m here, El. I’m right here. Don’t suffer in silence.”

Her smile softened her face. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Do you want me to wait for you so you’re not here alone?”

“No. I’ve got another hour or so, and I can lock up.”

“Give me a quick call to let me know you got home okay.”

“Hunter . . .”

“What? You’ll always be my little sister, so call me.”

“I’m only four years younger than you.”

“And I vividly remember the day you were born.”

“Freak.”

Hunter chuckled at the predictable comment. His family teased him every day about his photographic memory and ability to recall facts and figures from years ago that should’ve been impossible to remember. Sometimes he wished he could forget some of the crap that rattled around in his brain, but it was his lot in life to be a walking, talking data warehouse. “See you in the morning.”

“Have a good night.”

“Call me.”

“Go!”

Hunter went down the stairs thinking about what Ella had said about him wanting to take care of things for everyone. Perhaps it was also his lot in life as the oldest of the ten Abbott siblings, but he wanted the people he loved to be happy and their problems to be few, even if that meant taking on more than his share of the load.

Hannah had been after him recently to work less and play more. If only he could think of something he’d rather do than work.

Totally pathetic. He knew it, but damn if he could figure out how to snap out of the rut he’d fallen into. When had he become an all-work, no-play stick in the mud? If he were being honest with himself, he’d been in the rut for a long time, probably since he graduated from college and joined the family business full time. College had been the last time he’d been truly free of responsibility and obligation.

Thinking about the blissful college days had him remembering his late brother-in-law Caleb, Hannah’s first husband, who’d died in Iraq seven years ago. If he came back to life and saw how ridiculously out of balance Hunter’s life had become, he’d raise holy hell.

Raising holy hell was on Hunter’s mind as he stepped into the cool darkness and waited for the motion-sensitive light to come on. Once it did, he turned to lock the door behind him. Ella would see to setting the alarm system. Leaving her alone at the store made him anxious, but he would check on her if she didn’t remember to call him.

A sound to his left had him stopping to listen. Was that sniffling? “Who’s there?”

“It’s me, Megan. I’m sorry to scare you.”

That voice . . . It cut through him like a knife slicing butter. Every nerve ending in his body stood up to take note of her nearness, which happened every damned time he came into any kind of contact with her. “Megan,” he said in a voice that was barely a whisper. “What’re you doing here in the dark?”

“Hiding out.”

“Why? Are you hurt? What’s wrong?” True to form, he wanted to make things right for her, no matter what it took. His heart beat quickly, as if he’d been running for miles, and his hands were suddenly sweaty and clammy. He’d never understand why this particular woman provoked such a strong reaction in him every time he laid eyes on her—or in this case, heard tears in her voice as she spoke in the dark.

“Nothing’s wrong. I just needed a minute. Sorry to trespass on your property. I’ll get out of your way.”

“Wait. Don’t go.” The words came out sounding far more desperate than he’d intended. “At least let me drive you home.”

“That’s all right. I can walk.”

“I wouldn’t mind at all.”

She stepped into the light, and the sight of her tear-ravaged face broke his heart. What could possibly be so wrong?

“It’s out of your way.”

“I’ve got nowhere to be.” He watched her expressive face as she pondered his offer. Her lips pursed, which brought her cheekbones into sharper relief against the pale skin on her face. Exquisite was the word that came to mind whenever he looked at her, which was as often as he could. Until recently she’d had a major crush on his brother Will, but that had no bearing whatsoever on how he felt about her. He looked at her, and he wanted. It was that simple.

Except she barely knew he was alive, which was a problem.

“If you’re sure you don’t mind,” she said after an impossibly long pause.

“I really don’t.”

“Thank you.”

She walked with him to his silver Lincoln Navigator and stood by his side as he held the passenger door and waited for her to get settled.

As he got into the driver’s side, his growling stomach reminded him of the take-out order. “Have you had dinner?” The words were out before he could take the time to overanalyze the situation.

“Not yet.”

“I have a pizza and salad on order. I’d be happy to share.”

“I don’t know if I could eat.”

“Come along and keep me company?”

“Um, sure. Okay.” She reached into her purse, withdrew a tissue and wiped her eyes.

“Are you going to tell me why you were crying?”

“Do I have to?”

“Of course not.” He was surprised that she would think he’d try to force it out of her. “But I’m told I’m a good listener.”

She had no reply to that, so he turned the key to start the engine, lowering the windows a bit to get some air.

“I probably stink from cleaning the diner,” she said.

“No, you don’t.” As he drove, he thought of a thousand things he’d like to say to her, but none were the sort of things a guy blurted out when he finally had a moment alone with the woman he desired.

How exactly did you tell a woman who barely knew you were alive that you thought about her constantly? That seeing her upset killed you. That wanting her kept you awake at night. How did you tell her it didn’t matter if she had once been obsessed with your brother? That there was nothing you wouldn’t do to see her smile, to see her pale blue eyes light up with joy?

How could he say any of that and not sound like a total creep?

He couldn’t, so he kept his mouth shut and hoped he wouldn’t do something embarrassing like hyperventilate from the overwhelming effort it took not to say all of it.

Tracey’s Review

Being the oldest of the ten Abbott children, Hunter Abbott has always been the stable one, the level-headed one, the one that everyone can count on to keep things on an even keel. But still waters run deep, and Hunter is about to shake things up. Megan Kane has not had an easy life, but is happy with the way things are. When life as she knows it gets turned upside-down yet again, having a safe harbor is just what she needs.

Reading a book by Marie Force is always such a pleasure for me. Her characters feel like old friends, and seeing what they’re up to is like coming home. Her Green Mountain series has quickly become one of my favorites, and I couldn’t recommend them any more highly. I liked Hunter in the previous books in this series, but fell in love with him in And I Love Her. He may seem like a sedate sort of guy, but there’s a lot simmering below the surface, and it’s sexy as all get-out. His take-charge attitude when it comes to Megan is hot, sweet, and endearing, all at the same time. He knows what he wants and is finally reaching out to take it. Megan lets him know on more than one occasion that she isn’t relationship material, and that she’s not looking for a permanent thing, but she doesn’t stand a chance against him once he steps up his game, seeing her fear for what it is, and wasting no time showing her that love is worth the risks.

I have to mention, too, how much I adore Hunter’s whole family. His grandfather Elmer, his parents, and all of his siblings, cannot help but butt into this poor man’s business. The love that they feel for each other is evident in every conversation, and it just makes the story that much more heartwarming.

Marie and her books just keep getting better and better, and I will happily read anything that she puts out. I highly recommend both this book and the whole series, and look forward to reading It’s Only Love (Book 5) when it releases. 5 couldn’t-be-lovelier stars for Hunter and Megan and the whole Abbott crew.

Synopsis

Lindsey:

I took a shower and dressed for bed. Part of me hoped that Taz would tap on my door and suggest we continue what we’d started earlier, but the other part of me prayed he wouldn’t.

What would that serve?

I crawled into our huge bed and, for some reason, it felt emptier than it had over the past couple of months.

I tossed and turned for a few minutes, punching my pillow several times to get it just right and then squeezing my eyes shut, trying to force sleep to descend upon me.

As if that would erase the vision of my husband’s face, his eyes closed, calling Talia “baby girl” as she fucked him, that had now become etched in my brain.

Fuck that bitch!

He was my husband!

He was my lover!

His cock belonged to me, not her. By denying him what I desperately wanted every bit as much as he did, I was allowing that bitch to fuck me over!

I am not a weak person.

It’s time I claim what’s always been mine.

I threw the covers off of me and traipsed down the carpeted hallway to his room, not bothering to knock on the door.

I caught him by surprise as I threw the door open, and saw him standing in front of the tall dresser, rooting around for something to wear. He was fresh out of the shower; a white towel slung low on his hips.

He turned around as he heard my intrusion. I didn’t pause in my mission, making my intent perfectly clear as I closed the distance between us, and with quick swipe of my hand, yanked the towel from his body.

I didn’t miss the quirk of his brow as my eyes perused his body, loving every inch of it, and knowing it was meant for my enjoyment alone. It was my playground; my turf, and I sure as hell was claiming it again.

“Lindsey?”

“On the bed, Taz,” I said, meaning business. “I’m the only one that rides your cock.”

A slow, sexy smile graced his lips The rugged appearance he now rocked as a result of his beard and dark, spiky hair caused me to take a deep breath as his arms reached for me.

taz 3About Andrea Smith

andrea smith-2I was born and raised in southern Ohio, and with the exception of a brief stint in Dallas, TX, have been an Ohioan most of my life.
