TRAE
It’s a call that changes my life–and my little girl’s. Years ago, playing for the NBA was the dream, but the Seattle Stallions suck. Worse than that, my old teammate is now the star center–not to mention my number one rival. There has to be a catch, some sort of agenda. Before I was injured, I was the best. Now? There’s no way they want me.

But when I see the roster and salaries, it all comes together. It’s a chance to get on the court again and change our lives. And I just can’t wait for the opportunity to finally take him down. What I never counted on is Courtney Cohen being the game changer.

COURTNEY
I inherited the Bad News Bears of the NBA. When I discovered the star center, my ex fiancé, cheating on me, all I want is to jump ship before the whole thing sinks. But with revenge on my mind, I exact a plan. Take down the dirty player and save my father’s dream.

Suddenly twelve minutes is too little time, and a season is not long enough.

Excerpt

“You still afraid of me?” Courtney asks. I push her hair out of her face. “No.” “I’m afraid of you.” “No beer muscles tonight?” I ask, glancing at her empty glasses. She shakes her head. I scoot in closer to her. “Tell me what you’re afraid of.” “Liking you too much,” she says then takes a drink. I turn her in her seat so she’s facing me. “You’re gonna like me even more when I’m inside you.” Her body grows taut. “You can’t say stuff like that. It makes me uncomfortable.” “Well, now I’m going to have to do it more often to get you used to it; make you crave it, beg for it.”

Michel’s Review

I am a huge fan of sports themed romance books. I have read about almost every sport except for basketball.  When I was presented with the opportunity to review Offensive Rebound by MJ Fields, I jumped on it because I knew it would be a new reading experience for me.  While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, liked the characters, and felt the passion, I found a few glitches in the story that held me back from fully investing in it.

Courtney Cohen has inherited the Seattle Stallions Basketball team.  This team is relatively new and the joke of the NBA world.  Her father had purchased the team and built a state of the art arena with the hopes of leaving a legacy behind for her.  Before he could carry out his intentions and build the legacy he passed away from a sudden heart attack.  Courtney was still in college and had no idea how to handle a multi billion dollar business.  She handed the management over to her boyfriend, Brock Boehiem, who was the star player of the Seattle Stallions.  Months later she’s informed that the organization is almost bankrupt and is about to go under.  She is forced to take over the reins.  Upon her arrival she not only finds out that her team has been mismanaged but that her boyfriend is also a lying cheat.  He has a solid contract so she cannot fire him but she can take over the management.

The organization is a complete mess.  She is going to have to rebuild the inner management from the ground up.  She is also going to have to assert her management over the players and the coach.  She is not a member of the good old boys club and is met with defiance, rebellion, and attitude.  She must gain control of the players before the ball is in her court.  The only player cooperating is the new guy, Trae Rhodes.  Trae Rhodes is a washed up college player that was signed by her father before he passed away.  Why would her father bring on a player that isn’t on the same playing level as her team members.

Trae Rhodes is grateful for the opportunity and a chance in the pros.  His life had drastically changed after a college injury that left him unable to play the game he loved.  His life went in a different direction and he had new priorities that outshine basketball.  Playing at a professional level will give him the income he needs and the credibility he needs in the world of basketball.  It is merely a stepping stone in his life.  Becoming a Seattle Stallion will also give him the opportunity to settle an old score with Brock Boehiem, his most hated enemy.  Charlie Cohen signed him on for a reason and it may not be for his playing abilities.

It’s become clear that Courtney Cohen is Brock Boehiem’s achilles heel.  Trae isn’t sure if can use Courtney to settle his score.  He had too much respect for her old man.  He is beginning to immensely respect the powerful woman Courtney Cohen is becoming.

All is not right on the Seattle Stallions playing court.  Courtney and Trae will soon learn there’s a different game being played.  Together they can turn this team around and make it a contender in the NBA world.

I thoroughly enjoyed the romance between Courtney and Trae.  I loved his dedication to the ones he cared about.  I loved his sense of integrity.  I enjoyed watching Courtney grow from a naive young woman to a powerful executive and sensual woman.  The story had a good premise but I struggled with the professional aspects of it.  My logical mind struggled with it.  It takes more than one or two people to handle a multi billion dollar business.  An organization of this magnitude has an army in the office. It takes multi managers, multi departments, micro managers, and a specialized staff.  The players are professionals under contract.  Their careers and lively hood depends upon their performances.  Their performances dictate whether they stay within the professional world of basketball.  In this book the players seemed to have a high school or college mentality that followed the leader rather than relying on their agents and attorneys.  One player had too much control and that would never happen in the world of professional sports.  The same goes for the coaches.  Coaches and players are not involved in the financial aspect of the business other than receiving their earnings and meeting contractual obligations.

I enjoyed this basketball romance and would recommend to other readers.

Synopsis

I was a Sixty-Eight Whiskey—a combat medic. So when I hear someone shout “MEDIC!” training just kicks in. It’s automatic, immediate. I don’t think I even saw the guy whose leg I tended to, not really. All I saw was him. Zane Badd. His tuxedo fit him like he’d been sewn into it, and his eyes reflected the fury and the hardness of a combat veteran, but when he looked at me, he just…softened. By the time I had his brother patched, Zane and I were both covered in blood, and I knew I had to have him.

The trouble with Zane isn’t getting him, it’s keeping him.

And the trouble with me is, even if I could hold onto a man like Zane, I wouldn’t know what to do with him. It’s not in my nature, and if life has taught me anything, it’s to not trust anyone, least of all men like Zane. He’s a warrior through and through, hard, muscular, gorgeous, tenacious, and yet oddly tender toward me.

Experience and instincts are telling me to run from Zane Badd as fast as possible, but my heart and my body are telling me to stay, to hold on and not let go. Yeah, it’s a conflict as old as humanity itself, but it’s brand new for me.

*   *   *

Life as Navy SEAL doesn’t exactly prepare you for normality. Yeah, I can tend bar and goof off with my seven crazy brothers, but what do I do when the woman of my dreams—dreams I didn’t know I’d had until I saw her—explodes into my life like a frag grenade? I’m trained to attack, to win, to survive at any costs, and figuring out what to do about a woman like Amarantha Quinn will take every scrap of tenacity and courage I possess. Combat is easy, it turns out, in comparison to facing your own fears and scars.

And then sometimes, just when you think you’ve got it finally figured out, fate throws you a screwball and sends everything FUBAR.

Michel’s Review

The eight sexy BADD brothers are back and not only serving up the cocktails but also serving up some red hot, panty melting action in Ketchikan, Alaska.  We met the oldest brother, the sexy bar proprietor, Sebastian Badd in the first book, Badd Motherf*cker. Now it’s time to meet another BADD boy in the second book, Badd Ass.

The seven younger BADD brothers left Ketchikan to pursue their own dreams, leaving Sebastian behind to run the family bar. After their father passed away, his seven brothers were forced to return home for one year and help run the legacy he left behind. A bartender, a Navy Seal, a semi-pro football player, a sexy stunt pilot, rock star twins, a wanderlust soul, and a certified genius are serving up the sexy along with the cocktails.  The ladies are flocking to the bar with hopes of experiencing a whole lot of BADD.  It’s going to take some very special women to handle the BADD boys.

Zane Badd was the first brother to return home.  He resigned from his commission as a Navy Seal to return home to Ketchikan to carry out the stipulations of his father’s will for his older brother Sebastian, who has sacrificed everything for them.  Upon returning home he finds his older brother is falling in love and heading towards the alter.  Watching his brother experience the ins and outs of a committed relationship is an eye opener.  For the first time in his life he is questioning if there is more to his own life than being a soldier and a brother.  He’s definitely not ready for love and commitment but sees the potential down the road.  For now he’s happy to please the ladies, enjoy the pleasures of one night stand hook ups, hang with his brothers, and resettle into Ketchikan life.  That mantra falls to pieces when his younger brothers cuts his leg in a drunken bout at Sebastian’s wedding.  The sexy medic that steps up to help has his full attention. He is taking this sexy medic home and straight to his bed. A one night stand that blows his mind and leaves him wanting more.  He intends to monopolize every moment of her free vacation time burning up the sheets and bringing down the house.  He never intended to fall in love.

Amaratha ( Mara ) Quinn is not the typical female looking for love, marriage, and happily ever after.  In fact she has never really done relationships and prefers one night stand hookups.  She has a healthy sex drive and satisifies it without expectations of more.  She’s a one and done girl.  She has a good career and has made a life for herself in San Francisco.  It was great until her best friend moved to Seattle and made her life seem lonely.  She’s heading to Ketchikan to meet up with her best friend Claire for a few days of vacation and fun.  While waiting for Claire’s cruise ship to arrive she wanders into a bar that is throwing an open wedding party and meets one of the sexiest men she has laid eyes on.  He’s the perfect male specimen to scratch her itch and add to her vacation fun. A one night stand that literally melts her panties.  Maybe she should rethink the one and done and have a vacation fling.

The chemistry between Zane and Mara is sizzling hot.  They are burning up the sheets and finding out there is more to sex when they open their minds and hearts to the possibilities. A vacation fling may change their lives forever.

I loved this book.  It was not only loaded with erotic romance, it was light hearted, fun, and loaded with BADD charm.  Not only did the reader get to know Zane Badd but also began to see the distinct personalities of all of the BADD boys.  I have fallen in love with each of these BADD boys and can’t wait to see which one falls next.

Tracey’s Review

And, here we are, at the end of the twisting, turning, action-packed, passion-filled ride that is the Careless Whispers series by author Lisa Renee Jones. I’m a little sad to see it end, but, what a journey it has been.

In this third installment of the series, Ella’s memories of a murky and dangerous past become more and more clear, and revolve around a man who will do anything to obtain the things that he wants. What he wants, along with one of Ella’s still-emerging secret, is Ella herself. With the help of Kayden and the Underground, as well as another surprising ally, Ella is finally able to put all of the pieces together, and bring everything full-circle.

SURRENDER is a fast-paced read, dark, mysterious, and rife with danger, passion, and edge of your seat intrigue. Lisa does a fantastic job of tying up all of the loose ends, bringing in characters from her Inside Out, the books where we first met Sara, as well as her and Tall, Dark, & Deadly series, and giving Ella and Kayden the ending that I’d been hoping for. 5 delicious stars for this book, and, while I’m sorry to see this story end, I cannot wait to see what Lisa has in store for us. I cannot recommend the SURRENDER and the whole Careless Whispers and Inside Out series enough. My recommendation? Start at the beginning and savor this amazing group of characters.

Excerpt

~twenty-four years ago Nick pressed two fingers into the sleep deprived headache pounding in his temple and tried to concentrate on professor Jenkins’s explanation of ideal gas law. He circled a line of notes, ignored the knock on the auditorium door until he heard the familiar cry. Hannah, who he’d left in the university daycare two hours ago.

The high pitched wail wasn’t his two year old sister’s hurt cry. It was her scared cry with a touch of pissed off. In the six months since their parents’ death, he’d learned to tell the difference. He’d learned a lot of things. Like if he didn’t take her to the bathroom, she’d likely wait too long and have an accident. Like green beans made her throw up, but she’d eat them if he told her to. And she would never, ever go to sleep without Mr. Bunny.

He was up, out of his seat, and halfway down the auditorium stairs before his professor laid his pen down.

Nick’s eyes narrowed on the young blonde in an oversized sweatshirt with silk greek letters sewn on the front. She held a sobbing Hannah dressed in the sunny yellow sundress he’d picked out that morning. She hadn’t been crying when he left her. Now her eyes were red and snot mixed with tears dripped into her mouth. Hannah lunged for him. His arms engulfed her small body and his heart squeezed like it always did when she held onto him.

“I stay you,” Hannah said. Each word tumbled out of her with a jerk of her tiny shoulders.

“What happened to her?”

“Nothing happened to her. She hasn’t stopped screaming for the past hour and she bit three people. We can’t keep her like that.”

Several responses came to mind.

She’s just a baby.

She missed her nap.

And the loudest of all, it was my fault for leaving her.

Hannah raised her head to look at him, giant tears hanging from golden lashes. “I bite.”

“Well. At least she’s honest.” Professor Jenkins turned his questioning eyes to Nick. “She yours?”

He hesitated, but only a second. “My sister. But yes, she’s mine.” And at that moment she became even more his, which seemed to be the case every day. Every day, a little more his.

Michel’s Review
They say all good things are worth waiting for and for the most part that is true.  For Nick Walker and Mia James the wait was a painful journey that changed both of their lives.
***
Worth The Wait by Claudia Connor is a spinoff of the highly rated McKinney Brothers series.  In the new McKinney / Walker series, readers are meeting Hannah Walker’s ( Worth The Risk) older brothers.  It all begins with Nick Walker, the oldest of the boys, and the man who raised Hannah after their parents death.
***
Nick Walker was a nineteen year old college boy when his parents where killed.  Rather than allowing distant relatives to break up their family, Nick stepped up.  Dealing with his fourteen year old twin brothers and sixteen year old rebellious brother was enough to keep him busy but raising his two year old sister made him a parent.  The first few months were almost impossible.  He was a boy becoming an instant father.  He was determined to give Hannah the best life possible.  When he met Mia James at school, it was the wrong time as well as the right time.  They both instantly clicked even though their lives were on different paths.  Through sheer determination Nick and Mia made their lives work.  For twelve years their lives were good.  They became Hannah’s parents.  Their relationship was finally moving towards the next level.  It was time to marry and begin their own family. But life has a way of changing things in a single moment.
***
Hannah was kidnapped at age fourteen.  The months she was missing tore Nick and Mia apart.  Their relationship crumbled.  When Hannah was finally returned and irrevocably broken, Nick had to focus only on her.  He lost himself and he lost Mia.  Mia was just as devastated by Hannah’s kidnapping.  Not only has she lost the man she loves but she also lost the girl she has nurtured and loved for years.
***
Their lives were torn apart.  They both went in different directions.  Ten years later they once again in each’s others paths.  This time Nick is going to do everything in his power to get Mia back.  He has lived with his regrets for ten long years.  He’s raised his sister.  Hannah has become a whole person.  Through the love of Stephen McKinney, she is grabbing a hold of life.  Now he must do the same.
***
I have loved the McKinney series but Worth The Wait has become my favorite.  Claudia Connor delivered an emotional story that every person can relate to.  Nick and Mia won my hearts from the very beginning.  I hurt right along with them and rejoiced when they found each other once again.  A love that powerful is Worth The Wait!

I remained still, my arms wrapped around my knees, my jean shorts digging into the space where thigh met crotch as my red hair was whipped around my face by a passing breeze. I breathed in and out, counting backward from a hundred. Taking deep breaths and closing my eyes, I allowed positive energy to burn through me and eat away at the bad.

Giggles wafted from the benches below, near the fountain, and then drifted off as the other girls made their way out of the sports complex. Reality returned. It was present day, not back then when I was helpless.

Today I was in control.

Only after the others left—not that it mattered, I was invisible to them—did the coach nod in my direction and motion for me to come down.

That simple gesture felt like something more. Like I meant more to him than was appropriate for a coach and his student. His head tilted to the side for a beat too long, his gaze rested on me more thoughtfully than it had on the others, and he squinted at me in a way I liked very, very much.

“Think you can keep up with them?” He jerked his head back toward the gymnasium, a smirk twisting his mouth.

I zoned in on his lips and became a sailboat slicing through the sea, jumping into the blue ocean that was his eyes as I made my way down the stairs.

That’s your coach, Juliette. Let it be.

“I play singles, so I’m pretty sure I’ll hold my own with or without them,” I said from the bottom step, allowing my natural confidence to make an appearance. Hello, ego, my good friend.

“Yeah, I know. I meant, think you can hold your own with that crowd? In general?”

“I’ll be fine. I’m looking forward to it,” I lied. I wasn’t looking forward to dealing with them. Not today. Not tomorrow.

Though, now that I was in the presence of Coach King—up close and personal, outside, shouting, coaching, wearing shorts—I was more excited than before. His forearms fascinated me all over again. They rippled with strength when he moved, making me wonder what they would look like braced over me.

I pulled my hair back into a messy knot at my nape, allowing the breeze to hit my heated neck. “Thanks for asking me to come and watch.”

Michel’s Review

Looking for a forbidden romance that is loaded with angst?  Break Point by Rachel Blaufeld is what you are looking for.

Juliette Smith is a tennis superstar.  She had problems at her former college and is now being recruited for another school.  When her new coach, Drew King, shows up at her home, she knows she’s going to have problems at her new school.  She’s attracted to her new coach and suspects the attraction is mutual.

Drew knows he has to keep his attraction for Juliette hidden.  It could ruin them both.  The temptation is too much for either to handle.  When they finally give into the attraction it changes the course of their lives.

Their short lived affair has changed them both.  Drew left the school so that Juliette would have the opportunities she should have.  Juliette ended up leaving school anyways.

For six years both have lived their lives in the shadows of what could of been between them.  Their passion for one another isn’t the only secret being kept.  Will the ultimate truth tear them apart further or will it finally lead them to where they need to be?

I loved Drew King’s character.  He was truly an honorable man and handled a bad situation with great care.  I struggled with Juliette’s character.  I felt that she was a bit self centered.  She was more concerned about her repercussions than she was about Drew.  Her immaturity and selfish actions caused Drew to miss the first six years of being a father.  In this day and age, there was no need to keep this secret from him.  He was a good guy and always had her best interest at heart.

I personally struggle with these type of books… but that’s just me.  Break Point was well written and had some very emotional moments.  Fans of this type of book are going to embrace it whole heartedly.

5Star
Tracey’s Review

What do you get when two hot-blooded, artistic, people are in the same room? Well, if it’s DIVINE DESIRE by author Audrey Carlan, you get Mila Mercado and Atlas Powers, two of the sexiest most well-paired yoga instructors to come out of Lotus House.

All that Mila the artist really wants to do is to work on her craft. Seeing a subject in most everyone, she yearns to focus on doing what comes naturally to her full time, to pour out her passion in her painting and share it with the world. In the meantime, though, she’s busy as a yoga instructor at Lotus House. Well, that, and fighting her passion for Lotus House’s newest yogi, Atlas Powers.

When Atlas suggests teaching an, erm, unorthodox form of yoga as part of the Lotus House line-up, Mila is tapped to attend and report back to her bosses. But what Mila mostly gets out of the class is a major case of the hots for him, and a wicked idea that will have them spending lots of time together.

Audrey’s Lotus House series has so many things going for it. I have come to understand things about yoga that I did not know before, and her inclusion of the practices of yoga make for an earthiness and sensuality that add so much to these books.

Mila and Atlas are a fiery mix of artistic temperment that combust to make one heck of a hot couple. Beyond the physical, though, both are working through things from their past, and trying to make their way to their happy despite it. When those ghosts from the past come home to roost, Mila and Atlas have their work cut out for them, and it’s an emotional road that the two have to travel to come out on the other side.

Audrey has once again written a story that simultaneously grabs you by the heartstrings and heats things up, and it’s one that I thoroughly enjoyed. 5 no-question stars for DIVINE DESIRE, as expected. And, based on the little snippet at the end of this book, we’re going to love LIMITLESS LOVE, the next book in the series, so if you haven’t read the first books, now’s the time to get caught up. Fans of Audrey should move these books right to the top of their TBRs, and get reading!

The light in her eyes turned to concern and puckered her brows. “Are you okay?”His heart drummed inside of him, and he moistened his lips. Taken aback, he’d never had anyone ask him that question and feel like they honestly wanted to know the answer.

He nodded. “I’m good. A little stiff and sore but good.”

Heather shook her head and leaned closer to the table, reaching for his hand. He crossed his arms.

“Don’t be like that,” she whispered. “I care about you.”

“Don’t.”

Her eyes widened. “Don’t care?”

“Shit is going on, Heather. You look out for yourself and stay away from me.” His rapid heartbeat made his chest hurt, and he forced a deeper breath inside of him. “I shouldn’t have played around with you. You’re a good woman.”

“And, what? You’re a bad man?” Heather smirked. “Give that story to someone else. Whatever is going on with you has everything to do with you being attacked. It’s not about how I enjoy your company, and you’ve shown me you’re interested.”

“Like I said, you’re a good—”

“I am.” She stood from the table, stepped toward him, and bent down. “You’re also good. That doesn’t mean I’ll let you act like an asshole toward me. Go home, get some rest, and for God’s sake, take care of yourself.”

She kissed the top of his head, shocking him. All he could do was sit there and watch her walk up to the group of women across the room and join their conversation. She’d spoken words as if ordering him around and yet delivered them softly he could still feel the vibration of warmth she’d left behind in his chest. That feeling had him feeling better than he’d felt since he got his ass handed to him.

Heather leaned forward. Her hard, round ass pressed tight against her jeans. He stretched his leg out, leaned back in the chair, and wondered if Heather was aware of him ogling her. She shifted her hips side to side and then straightened, tilting back her head, and drinking from a bottle of beer.

Not from a glass, which Gia preferred.

Not a mixed drink, which Jana consumed.

No, Heather wrapped her slim fingers around the cold bottle and drank as if she enjoyed simply putting her lips on the glass.

Rod brushed the back of his hand across his lips. He’d taken things slow and gotten to know her without putting any demands on her and had enjoyed every fucking minute of frustration.

He hadn’t planned a relationship with Heather. It happened the moment she’d stepped forward without stepping back and decked him in the mouth. Her strength surprised the shit out of him. Most people backed away.

Drawn to that strength, he discovered pure softness. It wasn’t easy to get behind the layer of safety she carried herself. Short on sharing and hesitant of his intentions, she’d slowly let down her guard until he was afraid of hurting her. Hurting Swiss. Hurting the club.

If he were a good man, he’d have her in his bed every night and keep her to himself because he hated the thought of one of his MC brothers having her. But even Heather could see he was an asshole at heart.

He had to be.

Because he was one.

He shook his head, looked away from the woman who made him forget and stood. It was time to get out of here and go find the person after him. He never once believed the attack was a random hit.

He wasn’t that lucky.

Pre Release Blitz + Excerpt + Giveaway : Romancing Dr. Love by Rebecca Heflin

It’s all about the chemistry.
ROMANCING DR. LOVE
Sterling University #1
Rebecca Heflin
Releasing March 7th, 2017

Dr.
Samantha Love says it’s all about the chemistry. A brainy psychology professor
and researcher, Sam has based her entire academic career on the theory that
what we call love is simply a chemical reaction. She is currently running a
study to prove that her compatibility blood test reveals perfect matches—sort
of like an organ donor, but for relationships. No romance required.

Along comes
sexy literature professor, Dr. Ethan Quinn, who says it’s all about the
romance. He thinks the pretty psychology professor has taken love and all its
mysteries and reduced it to something as romantic as a cholesterol test, and he
sets out to prove her theory wrong.

When Ethan
signs up for her study, Sam discovers to her horror, that according to her
compatibility test, they are a perfect match. Sam faces an existential crisis
over her career and her research. If she believes in her science, shouldn’t it
follow that she believes Ethan is her perfect mate? And if she doesn’t believe
he’s her perfect mate, doesn’t that bring into question her research? Her
compatibility test? Her reputation? And her very career?

As Sam struggles with her dilemma, Ethan pursues her with all the romantic
tactics in his arsenal. Will Sam’s theories succumb to his challenge? Or will
Ethan lose the battle for Sam’s heart?

“No, no, no. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening,” Samantha Love muttered as she gently banged her head against the steering wheel.

She turned the key again. Nothing. Not even a wheeze. This was the icing on the cake of her otherwise craptastic day.

A bead of sweat trickled down her back. And another one between her girls. God, she hated boob sweat.

When she’d taken the research and teaching position at Sterling University in North Georgia last fall, she’d never have guessed the summer would be so hot.

Throwing open the door of her car to let in even more stifling heat, she searched for the lever to pop the hood. Finally locating it, she pulled it, then walked around to the front of the car. As if she knew what to do.

Just as she leaned under the hood to jiggle some wire thingies, she heard, “Dr. Love? Do you need some help?”

She let out a startled squeak hitting her head on the underside of the hood. “Ow!” Rubbing the offended spot, she turned and saw Ethan Quinn standing there looking all adorable. Not to mention manly.

Dammit. Why did it have to be him? “No. I’m fine.” Yeah, right. For all her parents’ preaching on women and self-sufficiency, she didn’t know a dipstick from a spark plug when it came to cars. She turned back to the mystery parts under the hood.

“You need a jump.”

“I beg your pardon?” She spun, hand on her hip.

“Your battery.” He pointed in the direction of her open hood. “It probably needs a jump.”

“Oh. Right.” Of course he meant her battery. What else would he be talking about?

“I have jumper cables in my car. I’ll have you going in a few minutes.”

“He’ll have me going in a few minutes,” she mumbled under her breath as she watched him walk to the far corner of the parking lot. Tall, athletic build, dark-wash jeans, white button-down shirt. And that hair. Tousled espresso-brown waves just brushing the top of his collar. “He’s already got me going,” she said to herself.

He tossed his messenger bag in the car and climbed in. And, of course, his car started. Because that’s what cars did. They started when you turned the key. Then they blew cold air, so you didn’t have to stand in the mid-July Georgia heat. Unless they dated back to the Stone Age like hers. Another bead of sweat trickled between her breasts.

She released a wistful sigh. Bet the AC felt good.

He pulled his recent model American-made car around to face hers and then got out to pop the hood. Walking around to the trunk, he opened it and grabbed a set of jumper cables, looking like he knew what he was doing.

Good thing somebody around here did.

“It’s a hot one today,” Ethan commented, as he connected one of the clamp doohickeys to what she assumed was the car battery. His sleeves were rolled up over his forearms, displaying muscles with a light dusting of hair.

Clamping the other end of the cables to his own battery, he then returned to her car. When he walked past her, his cologne wafted to her nose, temporarily erasing her angst at being in his presence.

Then he touched his hand to her back. And the anxiety returned tenfold. “Stand clear.” He leaned into the gaping mouth of the car and attached the remaining clamp, throwing a spark.

“All right. Let’s see if we can get this baby going.” He climbed into the driver’s seat of his car and turned it on.

“Give her a try,” he hollered over the din of his car’s running motor.

Sam dropped into the front seat and turned the key. The older-than-dirt engine tried but couldn’t work up enough energy to turn over.

“Hold on,” Ethan called, then revved his car. “Okay, try her again.”

Her car wheezed then reluctantly cranked a couple of times before coming to life.

Ethan was at her door, leaning over, hands braced on the roof. “Great. Let her run a bit, then I’ll disconnect the cables.” A bead of sweat trickled down his temple. “My AC’s on full blast. Why don’t you sit in my car until yours is ready to go.” He stepped aside to give her room to get out.

Sam felt as wilted as week-old lettuce, so against her better judgment she took him up on the offer.

He opened the front passenger door of his shiny black Lincoln MKS—such a gentleman—and she sank into the leather seats and stuck her face in front of the vent. God, it felt good. The door closed with a solid thunk. Resisting the urge to wipe away the boob sweat, she settled for drying the perspiration on her face and neck.

The car dipped as Ethan took a seat on the driver’s side before shutting the door and closing out the rest of the world. Music played softly in the background—something popular. The intimacy of being alone in the car with Ethan washed over her.

“I’d offer you something cool to drink, but I don’t have anything.”

She realized she hadn’t said a word in the last five minutes. “Thank you.”

“No thanks necessary. You’d do the same for me.”

“No, I wouldn’t.” She smiled. “I don’t know a thing about cars.”

He nodded as a grin split his face. “Well, from the looks of your battery, you’re going to need a new one. I can follow you to Burt’s Automotive. He can have a replacement installed in fifteen minutes.”

She shook her head. “Thanks, but I don’t want to put you out in any further.”

“It’s no trouble. Besides, if you go straight home, I don’t think she’s going to start for you in the morning.”

“Oh.” That would not be good.

“She should be juiced up enough to get you to Burt’s. Stay here until I unhook the cables.” Ethan got out of the car and set to work.

She’d steered clear of Ethan Quinn since the day she was introduced to the rest of the college faculty. The moment they shook hands she’d felt a connection. And from the look on his face, he’d felt it too. That flood of adrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin one feels when there is a strong physical attraction.

Relationships were complicated, but getting situated at a new university was already complicated enough.

No. Being in close proximity to Ethan Quinn was a bad idea. So as much as she hated to leave the cool comfort of his car, she jumped out and got in her rolling oven before he could say otherwise.

4. Don’t believe client when he says he really, really wanted to call.

5. Remember, the client is always right—so you can’t junk punch him when he
demands new design after new design.

6. Ignore accelerated heartbeat every time sexy client walks into room.

7. Definitely ignore client’s large hands. They just mean he wears big gloves.

He scrubbed
his palms over his face and rested his elbows on his knees. “This was not how I
saw this night going.”
“Big
Valentine’s Day plans?”
He lowered his
hands and looked at me like I’d just claimed I single-handedly caused the storm
raging outside. “I didn’t even know that was today. Does this mean we’re each
other’s valentines by default?”
I scoffed.
“Not a chance.”
He chuckled.
“Always so blunt. I like that about you.” He quickly cleared his throat as if
he hadn’t meant to say that. “Well, non-valentine, looks like we’re going to be
stuck here a while. Have anything in mind?” he said.
I decided
against packing on another insult. He was being nice, and this sure as heck
beat staring at the wall the rest of the night. “My form of entertainment is at
6 percent battery, so I’m open to suggestions.”
“Mine is fully
charged. Want to watch something?”
“Sure.” What
else did I have to do? Before I knew it, I was sitting on the bed next to him, leaning
against the ornately carved headboard. Snow gusting against the window was the
only sound in the room as he searched for a show for us to watch.
So quiet.
Way too quiet.
I fidgeted
with my necklace, moving the small diamond back and forth on the chain. The
last time I was in bed with Ryder… I didn’t even want to finish that thought,
because it’d do nothing but make this situation worse. I chanced a peek in his
direction.

He chewed the
inside of his cheek, swiping through our options. “This is awkward, huh?” he
said.
“We’ve
achieved Urkel status.”
He chuckled
and scrolled through the show queue. “Would you rather watch Law
and Order: SVU
or Criminal
Minds?”
“That is quite
possibly the worst Would You Rather question ever asked.”
His eyes cut
to mine. “I didn’t know I was playing a game.”
“You’ve never
played it?”
He shook his
head.
Lainey and I
played this game all the time in college, and when we’d take road trips
together. She always came up with the grossest ones. “It’s simple. All you have
to do is ask the person which horrible thing they’d rather do. The harder the
question, the better. Like would you rather lay in a pit of snakes, or eat
questionably dead roadkill?” I pointed to his phone. “Oh, John
Tucker Must Die.
I like that one.
“Negative,
ghost rider.” He scrolled past my suggestion. “And what the hell does questionably
dead mean? Is it still twitching, or are we talking
suspicious cause of death?”
I shrugged.
“The interpretation’s up to you.”
“You’re
absolutely no help.” He swiped his thumb across his beard and contemplated. “I
guess I’d go with the snakes.”
“Okay, now
it’s your turn,” I said.
“Do I really
have to play? I thought we were picking a show.”
I shot him a
look.
“Fine. Would
you rather have me or Chewbacca as your valentine?”
“Too easy. The
spider.”
He put his
hand to his heart. “You wound me.”
“Stop being
such a baby.” I swatted at his chest and immediately pulled my hand back. Nope.
Would not go there. “Okay, would you rather not be able to see or talk for a
month?”
He answered
instantly. “See.”
“Right. You’d
probably go nuts if you couldn’t open that big mouth of yours.”
His lips
twitched. “You’re one to talk.”
“Excuse me?”
Okay, I did have a tough time keeping my thoughts on lockdown outside the
office, but that was my own cross to bear.
“Don’t even
try to play it off like you’re innocent.”
I’d dated a
lot of losers in the past, most who hadn’t even bothered to get to know me, but
even after only hanging out a few times, Ryder had me pegged. He was
perceptive. I saw the look in his eyes whenever I dealt with Jason. His attention
focused solely on me was unnerving. “Jerk,” I sputtered.
“Now I know
you’re holding back. You can do way better than that.” He scrolled through his
phone again. “How about Die Hard?”
“Are all your
show selections about death? I’m starting to worry I made a mistake coming over
here.” My lips pulled into a smile and I quickly extinguished it. God, I wanted
to hate him.
“Fine.” He
continued looking at the Netflix queue. “Would you rather eat sushi from a taco
stand, or lick an airplane armrest?”
“Good one.
Sushi.” I pointed to his screen. “How about 10 Things I
Hate About You?”
He shook his
head and chuckled. “Are all of your suggestions
going to not-so-subtly tell me you hate me?”
I smiled
sweetly. “Maybe.”
“Just think,
most people would find this to be a romantic escape. Two people, stuck in the
mountains on Valentine’s Day,” he said.
“We’re
Hallmark movie material, all right,” I deadpanned.
“Okay, fine.
How about The Walking Dead?”
“Your show
picking powers have been officially revoked.” I grabbed the phone from his
hand.
“Hey!” He
grabbed for the phone, and I held it out of reach. “You’re going to regret
that.” Within seconds he was on top of me, playfully pinning me to the bed, his
strong hands circling my wrists. Air evaporated from my lungs as our gazes
connected.
I was
immediately transported back to that night.
Tell
me what you want, Zoey. Tell me what you need from me.
I swallowed
hard. That was months ago, and those words still haunted me from time to time.
Because he did exactly that, gave me what I wanted and needed. Repeatedly.
