New Release + Release Blitz: Violent Triumphs by Jessica Hawkins

Title: Violent Triumphs
Series: White Monarch #3
Author: Jessica Hawkins
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: November 12, 2019

Blurb

The highly anticipated conclusion to the “emotional,
steamy, and dangerous” USA Today bestselling White
Monarch
 series.

I’ve become a queen to the forsaken, a leader to thieves, and the wife of a man
who instills fear in all who cross his path. He was the husband I didn’t want.
Now, I can’t fathom life without my king.

I should’ve been ready for anything. Like the caterpillar that feeds on poison
during metamorphosis, I was raised in the dangerous world of cartel crime. But
nothing could’ve prepared me for Cristiano de la Rosa, his brother’s poison, or
the Calavera cartel.

This is still a story about a love strong enough to topple households, unite
enemies, and divide brothers. Resilient enough to bring down those who would
try to destroy it . . . and selfless enough to make the ultimate sacrifice.

But I was warned, and so were you. Death’s day always comes. This time, it will
find what was once a caterpillar is now a butterfly—and hell hath no fury like
the White Monarch.

At the stadium’s
concession stand, I took a tall stool, putting Georgina and I at eye level
since she stood. “So, why didn’t you kiss François?” I asked. “Bad breath?”
She gasped
into her hand. “My breath is fine.”
“I meant
his. I’m sure yours is pure relish on a hotdog.”
She made a
face. “Gross.”
“I happen
to love relish,” I said. “But does François?”
Each time I
said François with flourish, she
flinched. I didn’t care. Something about him bugged me—I just couldn’t put my
finger on it.
“We didn’t
kiss because you interrupted us,” she pointed out.
“So? If I
were in his position, and we both wanted that kiss, I wouldn’t let anyone stop
me.”
Frank and I are clicking,” she said,
scowling. “There was even mention of spending time at his summerhouse.”
“Hamptons?”
She coughed
into her fist. “Boca Raton.”
The idea of
Georgina spending a summer with him in Boca Raton was tragic enough that I
almost smiled. I got the sense she was playing up the date. If it was so great,
why wasn’t she sitting here with him? And why was I more relieved than smug
about that? “Meanwhile, Justin and I will be clamming in Montauk.”
“You two
should really just make it official and announce your love to the world.”
“But then I
wouldn’t get to flirt with pretty girls.”
“For
someone who pretends to have as much game as you,” she said, “I still haven’t
seen you successfully flirt with any
girls since I’ve known you.”
I smirked.
“How do you know I’m not flirting with you right now?”

I found Manning waiting at the base of the porch steps with Blue, looking every inch a man in jeans and fishing boots, the porch swing’s floral printed cushions under one arm. Any fears I had vanished. This was about the man I loved, a man both tough and sensitive, determined but attentive.

“Why are you wearing galoshes?” I asked, taking his outstretched hand. I started for his truck but he pulled me around the side of the house, toward the back. “And what’re the cushions for?”

“Guess,” he said.

Manning and I had explored the woods behind the house plenty of times. Usually we went back there for two reasons—to walk Blue, or to go on the lake. Neither of those seemed like great after-dark activities. “I’m stumped,” I said.

As we crossed from our backyard into the woods, Manning kept me close with an arm around my shoulders. Blue darted through the trees but always sprinted back when we whistled for her. Perhaps if I’d been anywhere except the place I called home, I might’ve been spooked by the cover of darkness. By the rustling bushes, or the haunting hoots and flapping of wings echoing around us. Instead, I snuggled into the side of the man I knew would kill to protect me or die trying.

The closer we got to the edge of the forest, the more convinced I was that Manning had lost his mind and decided to recreate the night we’d snuck out of camp, gone for a drive, and wound up in the water.

The woods spit us out into a clearing that opened up to a tiny lake we’d come to know well. It was shallow, mostly off the map, and small enough for us to drift aimlessly. Manning kept the first dinghy he’d ever made there, tied to a stake in the ground. He’d built other boats—some he’d sold, and with help, a larger one we kept at one of Big Bear Lake’s marinas—but we had this little slice of heaven all to ourselves most of the time.

“We’re going on the lake?” I asked.

“Bingo,” he replied. “Go on. Climb on over the starboard side.” Manning winked before he added, “And into my lap.” It was the same thing he’d said to me my first night at the house in Big Bear.

No matter how endearing his invitation, I stayed where I was. We’d made love in this boat. I’d laughed until my sides had ached watching Manning try and fail to catch a fish with his hands. We’d drifted around in it on hot afternoons eating orange slices as the sun had set. But we’d certainly never taken it out at night.

Blue whined, probably sensing she was about to get left behind. “Blue and I are going to need a bit of an explanation before we proceed,” I said.

He squatted to untie the boat, and I heard the smile in his voice. “What’s wrong? Don’t trust me?”

“To steer this thing in the dark?”

“The stars are out.” He gestured up at the sky. “They’ll guide us, Birdy.”

“Actually,” I said, hands on my hips, “it’s a crescent moon and particularly dark tonight.”

“I know,” he said. “I wish I could say I planned it that way, but we just got lucky.”

Warily, I climbed over the starboard side and set up both cushions. Once I was seated at the bow, he pushed the boat through the weeds and waded in after it.

“Stay,” he told Blue.

She barked once to get her point across but plopped down at the edge of the lake, watching us go as she had many times before.

“Where are we headed?” I asked once Manning had climbed in.

“To the middle.” Slowly, he rowed us out on the water. As the night spread around us, complete stillness punctuated by occasional splashes and croaks, I began to wonder if the journey was the destination. Though Manning and I had planned a fairly low-key weekend, there was no getting around the chaos that came with having friends and family in one place. It’d been days, maybe even weeks, since I’d experienced this kind of stillness and peace.

“Okay, this was a good idea,” I admitted, shutting my eyes and relaxing against the back of the boat to enjoy the warm breeze.

“We’re here,” he said.

I opened my eyes. “Where’s here?”

“Middle of the lake. Best spot to see the show.” He reached for me. “Come.”

Taking his hand, I let him guide me forward to sit between his legs.

He enveloped me, hugging my back to his chest. “Look up.”

I relaxed against him, resting my arms on his as I scanned the countless stars. In the pitch black, they shone especially bright. “They’re beautiful,” I said.

“You know I’ll always move the stars for you if need be,” he said. “Whatever it takes.”

Though I appreciated the warmth behind his words, wasn’t it possible some fates couldn’t be rearranged? The vastness of the black sky and the sheer number of stars overhead made me feel small and insignificant—but not in a bad way. Did the universe have plans for us? Or had Manning and I really defined our own destiny? And what did either of those realities mean for our future?

Manning bent his mouth to my ear. “Lake?” he asked.

“Hmm?”

“Did you hear me?”

Whatever it takes. It occurred to me as we sat under the glittering stars that Manning would do anything in his power to move them in our favor—but what would it do to him if he couldn’t?

Release Day Blitz + 5+-Star Review + Giveaway: Move the Stars by Jessica Hawkins

We are pleased to share the release of MOVE THE STARS, the highly anticipated conclusion to the Something in the Way series by Jessica Hawkins.

Lake
It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents’ house. If I’d known then what I do now, would I have kept on walking? Manning was older, darker, experienced—and I’d trusted him when he said the story would only ever be about us. I’d held those words close and challenged fate, but I had lost.

A part of me is still that sixteen-year-old girl squinting up at Manning, but no matter how far I fall or high I soar, I’ll always be a bird without her bear and nothing without him.

Manning
When I close my eyes, I can no longer see her. The decisions I made were to push Lake in the right direction—away from me. But now that she’s gone, would I have made those same choices?

I’d walked away like I was supposed to. I’d kept my distance. I’d bent over backward to keep Lake pure, but she’s no longer that girl, and I don’t know if I can stay away anymore. I only know I don’t want to. She’s still everything I want and nothing I should ever have, but if anyone can move the stars, it’s her great bear in the sky.

Tracey’s Review

Oh, my gosh, oh, my gosh, OH, MY GOSH. I have been waiting for MOVE THE STARS, the final book in the Something In the Way series by author Jessica Hawkins for months. MONTHS. Sitting, waiting not so patiently, for Jessica to bring me back from the sob-fest that was the end of SOMEBODY ELSE’S SKY, I had plenty of time to ponder exactly how things would play out. I could not have even imagined what she had in store for Lake and Manning, and I am still in book hangover land.

This entire story gripped me from the first page of the first book, and Jessica did not disappoint with MOVE THE STARS. With truly no idea of what to expect, I was completely sucked into this third book, and could not put it down. With intensity, passion, and angst galore (it’s Jessica Hawkins, after all!), this was a book that I devoured. I mean, unstoppable. There was no way that I could not keep reading to find out the fate of this star-crossed pair.

MOVE THE STARS is one of those reads that made me both uncomfortable and over-the-moon happy, sometimes at the same time. There were times that I found myself wondering what in the world Jessica was thinking, that this was absolutely not the way that things were supposed to go down, but she brought everything together so beautifully, so masterfully, that any reservations were laid to rest, leaving me with a heart full of love for this exquisite story.

MOVE THE STARS is the perfect way to wrap up Lake’s and Manning’s story. It pushed my boundaries, swept me up, and carried me away, and I could not recommend it any more highly. It is 5+ gorgeous and emotional stars, and, along with the rest of the series, ranks in the top of my recommends for 2017.

Blurb
If I closed my eyes, I could still see them—all blonde sunshine, ocean-blue eyes, and long limbs. The glint of Lake’s gold bracelet. Pink cotton candy on Tiffany’s tongue. My scenery may have changed from heaven to hell, but some things never would: my struggle to do right by both sisters. To let Lake soar. To lift Tiffany up. The sacrifices I made for them, I made willingly.

A better man would’ve walked away by now, but I never claimed to be any good. I only promised myself I’d keep enough distance. If I’d learned one thing from my past, it was that love came in different forms. You could love passionately, hurt deep, die young. Or you could provide the kind of firm, steady support someone else could lean on.

Lake was everything I wanted, and nothing I could ever have. I was nobody before I knew her and a criminal after. The way to love her was to let her shine—even if it would be for somebody else.

 Tracey’s Review

Oh, my freaking goodness. This book, this series, is like crack, y’all. I sped through both the first book and this piece of beautiful in two days. Seriously. Two days, because, once I started reading, I just could not stop.

Author Jessica Hawkins has absolutely mastered the art of deliciously forbidden and heartbreakingly angsty reads, and, just as with SOMETHING IN THE WAY, I loved every single page of this second book in the trilogy. Lake, Manning, and even Tiffany, owned my heart here, and I could not put the books down because I needed, yes, needed to see where things would end up.

Falling in love with Lake and Manning and their star-crossed story, staying the course through this emotionally charged book, made for some of the best reading I’ve done to date this year. “Edge of your seat” is putting things mildly, because there were so many moments that were truly heart-stopping, right up until the very end. And, okay, I knew that the cliffhanger was coming, but, how I’m supposed to wait until October to find out the final piece of the story is beyond me. I am not good at waiting, and these books are so good!

SOMEBODY ELSE’S SKY is what I call a ‘big’ read, because it’s one that consumed me, one that I will keep thinking about until I can get my hands on MOVE THE STARS. 6+ intense, heartbreaking, beautiful, selfless stars for this one. I cannot recommend the books in this series highly enough. You’d be doing yourself a favor to add these to your TBR, but, hang on, because you’re in for quite the ride.

The First Taste by Jessica Hawkins

Series: Slip of the Tongue #2

Genre: Contemporary Romance

The First Taste Ebook Cover.jpg

Synopsis:

Andrew Beckwith has already devoted his life to one girl—and as far as he’s concerned, she’s all he needs. The rough-around-the-edges bad boy left his reckless ways behind six years ago when his daughter Bell was born. To the female population’s dismay, he’s unapologetically single. When Bell’s mother walked out on them years ago, he vowed never to let another woman close enough to hurt them again.

Amelia Van Ecken isn’t just another woman. She’s an independent, smart, and savvy businesswoman who doesn’t have time for sex, much less love. In the midst of a drawn-out, bitter divorce, all she wants is to bury herself in work. But when sharp-tongued Amelia and stubborn Andrew cross paths, sparks fly—and burn. Two things are obvious in an instant: they want each other, and they’re from different worlds. It’s the perfect formula for an off-the-charts one-night stand. After all, it’s not as if opposites ever attract.

The First Taste, a standalone spin-off of the Slip of the Tongue.

Tracey’s Review

Andrew Beckwith and his daughter Bell are doing just fine. Deserted by the mother of his child, Andrew has more than risen to the challenge of raising a healthy happy girl, a strong, honest, loving girl, secure in the knowledge that she is loved. Andrew, however, is another story. Guarding his heart from further heartbreak means that falling in love is not anywhere on his radar. Amelia Van Ecken has seen first-hand what giving up control of her heart means, and she wants no part of it. Happy to immerse herself in her business, avec, Amelia could not be less interested in romance.

If you follow my reviews, you know that I loved, loved, loved SLIP OF THE TONGUE by author Jessica Hawkins, a book that put me through the emotional wringer and left me thinking it about it long afterwards. One of the things that I particularly liked about that book was my introduction to Sadie’s brother, Andrew, and her niece, Bell. Just a glimpse of the two of them, and I was hooked, and I was excited to see that Andrew’s book would be coming our way soon.

So, here it is, that book. THE FIRST TASTE has all of the immediately engrossing qualities of all of Jessica’s books, that hook that grabs you and does not let you go until you’ve turned the last page. Here, again, are the characters that were introduced in SLIP OF THE TONGUE: Sadie, Nathan, Amelia, Andrew, and Bell. But, make no mistake, this book is a completely different story, and Andrew owns it.

Andrew is comfortable in his life. Secure in his love for Bell, and hers for him, he’s happy with the occasional hook-up, but is not looking for anything beyond the physical. When he meets Amelia, it couldn’t be more obvious that they are completely different from each other. But, when layers begin to be peeled away, and realities revealed, they realize that they are more alike than not, and that all of the things that they’ve been doing to protect themselves are keeping them from growing.

I inhaled this book. I loved everything about it, the characters, the story, the dialogue, just everything. Andrew had me from the first scene, from the way that he interacted with Bell to his snarky sexy encounter with Amelia. He takes no crap from anyone, and is fiercely protective of those that he loves. Strong in his vulnerability, he had my heart, and is, hands-down, one of my favorite book dads ever. And, Amelia, I think that there’s a little bit of Amelia is so many women. She’s lost because she trusted, and so she’s holding her heart so very closely. At first glance, she’s not the sort of woman to give up control to anyone, any man, but, as time goes on, and her relationship with Andrew evolves, her real self begins to shine through, and she’s like a completely different person.

Sadie and Nate have a continual presence in THE FIRST TASTE, and seeing them now must be like seeing how they were before they got to the point they were at in SLIP OF THE TONGUE. They are easy with each other, a couple secure in their love for each other, and there in every way to support Andrew, Bell, and, later, Amelia. And the rest of the supporting characters bring unconditional love and support, and made this read even better.

I knew that I would like this book, because the short glimpse that I’d had of Andrew and Bell in the first book had me invested in them. I didn’t know, though, that I would love this one even just a little bit more. Where SLIP OF THE TONGUE was viscerally intense, keeping me wound up throughout, THE FIRST TASTE has a bit more softness to it, somehow. There is still plenty of angst, of oh, no, she didn’t moments, but the personalities of Andrew, Bell, and Amelia, along with the softer and more relaxed Sadie and Nate, spoke to me in a different way. This is a definite 5-star read for me, and I highly recommend both books. They are absolutely on my list of top reads for this year, and they should be on your TBR.

Excerpt:

“What’re your plans tonight?”

She scoffs. “It’s Friday night. What aren’t my plans? I have drinks with friends in an hour, then a late dinner, and who knows after that.”

“Cancel them.”

She gapes at me. “Cancel my plans? Why would I?”

“Come out with me. Sadie says there’s a place around here with great pizza.”

She laughs, tilting her head and exposing the smooth column of her throat. “First, I don’t eat carbs, so there’s no way you’re getting me to do anything with the promise of pizza. Second, I just told you—I don’t date.”

“And neither do I.”

“Then why are you asking me out?” she asks.

“Because despite what you may think, I am a gentleman, and it’s only good manners to buy you dinner first.”

“First?” she asks, wrinkling her nose. “What’s second?”

We stare at each other. I let her figure it out on her own. It’s rare to meet a woman like me, someone who truly has no interest in finding a partner. I’ve heard that claim from enough girls to know when they’re bullshitting me, and unless Amelia is a Grade-A con artist, she definitely isn’t looking to get serious.

When she understands, the wrinkles on her forehead ease, and she parts her lips. I answer with a knowing smile. Suggesting sex within half an hour of meeting someone might normally get me slapped, but I get the feeling Amelia appreciates a more direct approach.

“I don’t date,” I say, “but I’m still a man with eyes.”

She makes no secret of looking me up and down. “You’re not my type either,” she warns. “I like men who carry a briefcase and see a barber regularly.”

I run my hand through my black hair, which I know is too long. “How’s that working out for you?”

She narrows her eyes. “Fine. Perfect.”

“I have some tattoos too,” I say. “And ride a motorcycle. Since that’s normally how I get most girls, I suppose those are turn-offs for you.”

“They are,” she says immediately, straightening her shoulders. “I’ve never understood the appeal of a bad boy.”

“Then tonight, we’re a match made in heaven, aren’t we? It shouldn’t be hard for either of us to say goodbye afterward.”

She bats her eyelashes a few times, not because she’s flirting but because she’s thinking. Considering. Which means it’s basically a done deal. I’ve never gotten this far with a girl only to have her walk away. “Why even bother with dinner?” she asks.

I take a moment to study her, her shoulder-length, perfectly coifed blonde hair. Her defined red lips that look like a heart when pursed, which is often. Yeah, based on the fact that I’m noticing details—something I try not to do anymore—I know I’m feeling her tonight. Most guys would jump at the opportunity to skip the small talk, but that doesn’t really appeal to me. I like women, always have. Just because Shana fucked me in the head doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate them. Doesn’t mean I don’t want to spend time around them—just so long’s it’s surface stuff.

I don’t want to scare her off by suggesting I might want to have a conversation with her, so I just shrug. “Because I’m starving.”

“I’m not hungry.”

“Indulge me then. I need my energy.”

“For what?” she asks.

I arch an eyebrow at her. I’ll definitely need my energy for a night with her.

She reads my expression and her cheeks redden. “Oh.”
