Love is heaven that hurts like hell…

Rodeo cowboy Canyon O’Donnell is a champion with more national titles than any pro bull rider in history. He’s also one week away from ending his own life. Haunted by mistakes from his past, Canyon isn’t looking for redemption, let alone love. But when a beautiful girl with her own tragic past practically falls into his lap, he can’t resist taking her under his wing. He can’t promise her forever, but maybe he can help ease her pain.

A little over a year ago, Lily Lawson was murdered. Now she’s back on earth in a new body, sent to redeem a lost soul before it’s too late. But her first good will mission is complicated by a powerful attraction to the tortured cowboy she’s been sent to save. Soon she wishes she could promise Canyon forever, but she only has a few days and time is running out.

Lily’s willing to do whatever it takes to save Canyon’s life. But what if the one thing he needs—her love—is the one thing she can never give?

Thoughts of tomorrow’s encounter should have filled her head too full to dwell on the pretty cowboy splashing around in the water below, but her brain had other ideas. Her sleep-deprived synapses were weary of stressful thoughts and eager for something to take her mind off heavier issues. Consequently, she had a hard time keeping her eyes from Canyon’s muscled back as he swam to the far bank and an even harder time controlling her response to the moment he emerged from the river, his soaked shorts clinging to the curves of his ass. The man had one phenomenal backside. No doubt about it. Swallowing hard, Lily wrenched her gaze from the swimming hole, taking her time spreading her towel out on the rocks near the bend in the river, doing her best to pull herself together. She wished Canyon hadn’t known about this particular spot. All the other tourists were down at the well-marked river beach with the manned lifeguard stand, which meant they were alone here, with nothing to distract Canyon from noticing that she was practically drooling all over herself. She’d never been ruled by lust before—she’d only slept with two men, though she’d certainly been attracted to others—but a bear claw had never tasted as delicious as the one at the donut shop last night, either. Time away from a human body had sharpened her senses, making her a slave to every sweet-smelling scent on the breeze, each bite of suddenly magical-tasting food, and the hunger to feel another body warm against hers. Preferably Canyon’s, the way it had been last night. It was all sorts of wrong, probably akin to a nurse lusting after her patient. She’d been sent here to help this man, not think about how good he looked in a swimsuit. She was ashamed of herself, but not so ashamed that she could keep her eyes from drifting from the romance novel she’d purchased last night to where Canyon frolicked in the water. Romance had clearly been a bad choice. She should have brought poor Grace’s well-worn copy of The Bell Jar and spent an hour inside the mind of a depressed genius, instead. But she was tired of sad, depressing things. She didn’t want to think about being in a body her sons wouldn’t recognize or that the man she would always love like a piece of her own soul was married to someone else. She didn’t want to think about only having a week to save a good man’s life or what waited for her on the other side of this brief return to earth.

Tracey’s Review

After so many months wandering the world in-between, light and weightless as a feather, coming back into a human body hurt like hell.

And so begins the story of Lily Grace Lawson and Canyon O’Donnell in EIGHT SECOND ANGEL, the follow-up novella to ROPES AND REVENGE in the Lonesome Point, Texas, series by Jessie Evans.

Lily Grace, wife of John Lawson, was killed in ROPES AND REVENGE, and, feeling that she still has unfinished business in the here and now, has been in the ‘in-between,’ unwilling to cross over. Canyon O’Donnell has suffered great loss himself, and, feeling that this world would be better without him, has decided to take matters into his own hands. It’s up to Lily Grace to show him just how precious life is.

Jessie is one of my go-to authors. I just love the way that she writes, her words, her characters, the love that she infuses into each of her stories. Jessie’s Lonesome Point, Texas, series is one of my favorites, full of strong sexy cowboys, women full of sass and strength, and tales of overcoming odds that sometimes seem impossible.

EIGHT SECOND ANGEL is a true second-chance romance, of sorts. Both Lily Grace and Canyon are living in the past, and it isn’t until the possibility of losing each other in the now arises that each are able to let go of what was and find the redemption that they seek.

This story may be one of my absolute favorites in the series. It’s full of love, loss, tears, smiles, and, yes, plenty of steamy sexy time, too. Canyon and Lily Grace touched my heart, making me want their HEA from early on. I happily recommend this book, and the whole Lonesome Point series, with 5+ ‘I’m crying, I’m smiling, life IS good and beautiful’ stars.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Jessie Evans, gave up a career as an international woman of mystery to write the sexy, contemporary Southern romances she loves to read.

She’s married to the man of her dreams, and together they’re raising a few adorable, mischievous children in a cottage in the jungle. She grew up in rural Arkansas, spending summers running wild, being chewed by chiggers, and now appreciates her home in a chigger-free part of the world even more.

When she’s not writing, Jessie enjoys playing her dulcimer (badly), sewing the worlds ugliest quilts to give to her friends, going for bike rides with her house full of boys, and drifting in and out on the waves, feeling thankful for sun, surf, and lovely people to share them with.

Synopsis

Two broken hearts, one chance to make something beautiful with the pieces…

Eight months ago, John Lawson lost his wife and best friend in a tragic accident on his family’s ranch. In the time since, he’s devoted himself to two things–taking care of his two newly motherless sons and proving that Lily’s accident was no accident. Now, he finally has hard evidence that his wife was murdered and he won’t rest until he has the killer’s blood on his hands. He doesn’t have time for anything but vengeance, especially not a crazy ghost hunter wanting to poke around the old spring on his family’s ranch.

Persephone Styles–Percy to her friends–learned about ghosts the hard way, when she was orphaned by a violent crime at the age of seven. Ever since, she’s seen spirits and been obsessed with studying souls beyond the grave. She’s in Lonesome Point to document the town’s spectral activity, but finds herself powerfully drawn to widower John Lawson and empathizing with his grieving children. For the first time in years, Percy is as riveted by the living as she’s always been by the dead and longs to be a part of John’s life.

But when one night of passion becomes something more, Percy realizes John is as haunted as she is and that the man she’s coming to love is walking a dangerous road that may end with him becoming a murderer’s next victim.

Tracey’s Review

John Lawson is a broken man. Having lost the love of his life, he’s having a hard time putting the pieces of his life back together. Although Lonesome Point law enforcement has ruled Lily’s death an accident, John is sure that there is more to the story, and lives for the moments that he meets Lily in the in-between, the space between waking and sleeping.

Persephone ‘Percy’ Styles has a gift. Able to communicate with the spirit world, and having spent all of her time with those no longer here, she’s ready to focus on the living, and to bring comfort to a man she doesn’t even know. After encountering a psychic exchange between John and Lily, Percy feels called to visit Lonesome Point and to help John heal, and Lily to pass over to the next world.

The Lonesome Point, TX, series by Jessie Evans has been a favorite of mine since the first book. Small-town life, quirky and loveable characters, mystery and intrigue, and, oh, yes, absolutely swoony cowboys and the ladies that are lucky enough to capture their hearts, make for a winning combination at every level.

I have loved each and every book in this series, but the Lawson brothers hold a special place in my heart. Loving, loyal, and completely committed to family, these three men are truly something. John, the eldest, is the rock of the family, the man that had stepped in when his father died, who has always been there for his mother and brothers, and who had found happiness with his true love only to have it ripped away. Losing Lily has thrown him into a tailspin, and the feeling that her death was no accident has kept him from being able to move on. When Percy shows up, he wants nothing to do with her particular brand of ‘help,’ figuring her for a nutcase, and pushes her away.

“I understand that’s not part of your belief system,” she said. “And I can respect that, but I have reason to believe there are spirits here who need my help and I’d like to stay until they feel safe enough to make contact.”

“Safe enough to make contact,” he echoed, his next breath emerging with a huff. “What are they going to do, come whisper in your ear?”

“Something like that,” she said, lifting her chin.

Percy quickly shows that she is what she says, and John, eager for answers, and intrigued by Percy and her gifts, finds himself working with her to unravel the mystery of Lily’s death.

This wouldn’t be a Jessie Evans book without a sweet, sexy, and heart-melting romance, and she does not disappoint. Almost from the beginning, John finds himself drawn to Percy, not only as someone to help him in his quest, but as a woman. She is unlike no one he’s known before, but his guilt over being attracted to her is a major stumbling block. Percy, for her part, has never felt the way she does about John for anyone else, and is determined to show him that his place is in the here and now, with her.

“…You deserve better than a man who doesn’t know if he’ll ever be able to love someone else again.”

“Maybe I don’t want better…And I know I don’t want to leave. I want to stay until you get your answers.”

“I care about you, Percy,” he said, his chest aching as his heart stretched in two different directions. “I don’t want to see you hurt, and I especially don’t want to be the one doing the hurting.”

“If you ask me to leave again, you will hurt me,” she said. “I need to see this through. Not just for you, but for me too. I need to see where this goes. Not just the investigation, but this. Us.”

Ropes and Revenge is the last book in the Lonesome Point series, and, although I am sad to see this series end, I am completely satisfied with the way that everything is wrapped up. I’m excited to be able to say that I will get to revisit the characters and place that I have come to love, as Jessie will be writing an off-shoot series based on the children of Lonesome Point. What could be better than a whole new generation of people to love? As ever, 5+ ‘happily ever after, what a fantastic story’ stars for Jessie Evans and Lonesome Point, TX.

It isn’t until her father’s death over a decade later that Layla gains the courage to leave her marriage. She hopes to find peace living alone, but her dreams of happily ever after died a long time ago.

Excerpt

Quiet. Calm. Don’t breathe. Don’t think. Don’t move. Play dead, Layla. You can do that.

You’ve been half-dead for years.

Layla squeezed her eyes shut and curled into a tighter ball inside the absolute blackness of the storage ottoman in the corner of Grayson and Reece’s bedroom. She’d dismissed the closet and underneath the bed as too predictable to be good hiding places. At the last moment, just as footsteps plodded slowly up the stairs, she’d lowered herself into the hollow ottoman and pulled the heavy leather lid on top.

Now, there was nothing but to keep quiet and pray.

Pray that it wasn’t Wayne’s boots thumping on the wooden floor in the hall, pray that this was a thief who would take her valuables and go away, and pray that Cole didn’t get hurt when he came rushing to her rescue.

She should never have called him. She shouldn’t have put him in danger, no matter how terrified she was.

Please, God, please let Cole be okay. Please let this be anyone other than Wayne.

A moment later, her husband’s deep voice shattered the middle-of-the-night silence, proving no one was listening to her prayers. “I know you’re here, Layla. And I know your brother isn’t. So why don’t you come out and talk to me, baby girl. I think we’ve got a lot to go over, don’t you?”

Layla bit down hard on her bottom lip, concentrating on the pain, fighting the tremor that rocked through her body in response to hearing her husband’s voice for the first time in months. She’d started to forget how easily he could frighten her, the way all it took was a few words and a certain tone of voice to let her know she was in trouble.

That tone thickened his words as he spoke again, making it clear how much he itched to get his hands on her, his fists into her, his rage washing over her like a flood of poison she couldn’t escape.

“I know what you did, baby.” Wayne’s words were followed by a low laugh that transformed into a prolonged, racking cough.

Tracey’s Review

Jessie’s Lonesome Point, TX, series just keeps getting better and better. I know, I say it after each book, but it is absolutely true. When each new installment in the series releases, I know that it’s going to have me riveted from the first page, unwilling to do anything but read, and Chaps and Chance delivers in the most wonderful way.

Once I met Cole Lawson, there was no way that I was willing or able to do anything but fly through this book as fast as I could. All of the Lawson brothers are yummy, but Cole, mmmmm, Cole. Hot as heck, sexy as sin, and steadfast to the end, he is the stuff that book boyfriends are made of. He’s loved Layla Parker since they were kids, and wants nothing more than to put the smile back on her face that years of living with her abusive husband Wayne took away. He knows that it’s not often that a second chance at love comes along, and will do whatever it takes to have the happy ending that they missed out on when they were younger.

Layla is one strong woman. Having survived ten long years of hell at Wayne’s hands, she’s emerged smarter and tougher. Left with a heart as battered as her body had been, Layla isn’t expecting to find love again, but Cole shows her that sometimes the best things are worth waiting – and fighting – for.

“They stared at each other, into each other, until the years and the awkwardness fell away, and for a moment, it was the way it used to be, back when they’d spent hours together, talking and laughing, with only comfortable silences falling between them.”

Jessie Evans is one of my go-to authors. She delivers angst, passion, sadness, and joy in equal measure with every book, and I look forward to each one with anticipation. I cannot wait to read Ropes and Revenge, John Lawson’s book, and to continue my love affair with Lonesome Point. 5+ ‘I love a cowboy’ stars for Jessie and this gem of a book.
