Tracey’s Review

For a small town, Holly Woods, TX, has seen its fair share of crime. Lucky for the good folks of the town that Noelle Bond and Drake Nash are around to set things to rights. When the latest whodunit is a case that hits very close to home for Noelle, she’s not stopping until the she has the answers she needs, and the town can rest easy again.

Let me start by saying that I love Emma Hart’s books. Sassy heroines, sexy badass men, and plots that do not disappoint. That being said, I am somehow a newcomer to Emma’s Holly Woods books. How can this be? How did I miss these? I’ve got some catching up to do.

Noelle is awesome. Super Sass x gazillion, this is one lady that can hold her own, whether she’s dealing with the bad guys, with Drake, her nemesis-turned-lover, or her Nonna, one heck of an old school Italian grandma, who’s not afraid to let Noelle know what she thinks of her living arrangements and life choices. Noelle, formerly of the Dallas, TX, police department, is doing what she does best, which is using her intuition and her connections to help solve crimes in her hometown. When an unidentified body turns out to be the answer to a decades old cold case, Noelle is on it, working alongside Drake and her brothers over at the Holly Woods P.D.

There is plenty of suspense, and Emma’s red herrings will help to keep the reader guessing up until the end. What I really enjoyed about TWIRLED BOND, though, is the characters and their relationships that Emma does such a wonderful job of fleshing out. Even in just reading this one installment, it’s evident that Noelle is changing, and, although I wouldn’t use the word softening, per se, she’s open to things that she apparently hadn’t been earlier on. And Drake, mmmm, Drake. I love him for many reasons, but mostly because he sees Noelle for who and what she is, and, rather than trying to change her, loves her because of it. Even for all of their back-and-forth, he really is her biggest fan, and the perfect yang to her yin.

The supporting characters, especially Noelle’s brothers and her Nonna, make every scene funnier, and lend lots of charm to the story, making it that much more readable. Having started this series, I have got to go back and catch up, and I am also looking forward to reading BURNING BOND, Bek’s story. TWIRLED BOND is 4.5-stars worth of sass, steam, and suspense, and I couldn’t recommend it more.

After Dirk’s death, Shady wants revenge on the Death Mob MC.  The Death Mob MC ruthlessly executed Dirk while the Nationals for the Sinner’s MC sat back and allowed it to happen because it for the good of the club.  The Sinner’s MC comes first and as a member it is a top priority.  Logically Shady knows this but his heart says something different. He’s beginning to question his life and his position in the Sinner’s MC. He lost more than a fellow club brother, he lost a true brother of the heart.  He lost his family of the heart when Saylor and Dirk passed away.  He wants revenge for himself and for the Sinner’s MC for being put in the position of sacrificing their best enforcer.

With the secret blessing of the Nationals and a few select brothers, Shady is on a mission of revenge.  He has taken a six month leave with the agreement that if the club needs him, he will return and handle business.  He’s gone to the east coast undercover as a normal citizen and is slowly making his mark against the Death Mob MC.  He’s under the radar and living a life that’s foreign to him.  When he meets a sexy pharmeceutical sales rep in a bar, it appears completely normal.  Diem is not your ordinary sexy single lady looking for fun. Sinner’s Revenge took a completely different direction than Sinner’s Creed but also added the answers to the whys in Sinner’s Creed.  Kim Jones connected all the dots with a complex story while giving Shady and Diem their right to shine.  They were harder characters than Dirk and Saylor.  Their damaged souls made them untouchable.  In the end it was Dirk and Saylor’s life testimony and acts of love that made Shady and Diem make the right choices.  The choice to love rather than hate.

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am with the new releases in the Hearts of the South series by Linda Winfree. I have been reading this series for years and thought the series was finished.  It was a great surprise when Linda Winfree released two new books in 2016.

The latest release, All I Need is another great addition to the series.  ER doctor, Savannah Mills, has been an emotional robot since the death of her fiancé two years ago.  She has buried herself in her work.  She hasn’t allowed herself to invest in new friendships.  The only people she allows in are her sister and brother in law ( book 10 characters).  She has even transferred to the small town ER where they live.  When she meets her new neighbor, she senses a kindred soul.  Another person not ready to invest in relationships or long term commitments.  She’s ready for a friend, she’s ready for sex, and she’s ready to take baby steps back into the world.  What she’s not ready for is a relationship or an emotional connection.

Tracey’s Review

I have been a fan of Carly’s for a long time, and this new series is really like a breath of fresh air for me. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Dare series, and knowing that she’d finished that one up was a little bit like leaving some really good friends behind. But with GOING DOWN EASY, it feels new, with characters and story lines that I know I’m going to really enjoy.

I can’t help but really like Kaden Barnes. He’s not perfect by any means. He has quirks, to say the least, and difficult is one of the first words to comes to mind when thinking of a way to describe him. His idiosyncrasies and the way that people have dealt with them have shaped him into the man that he is.

Lexie might be one of my favorite of Carly’s female characters to date. She’s forthright and no-nonsense, but her past with her mother and sister have given her a heart for those that need extra patience, concern, and consideration. She knows what is up with Kaden from Day 1, and willingly jumps right in, earning his hard-won respect quickly.

GOING DOWN EASY was a quick read for me. I thoroughly enjoyed everything from the rapport between Kaden and Lexie to the relationship between Kaden and his friends and partners. There are plenty of steamy sexy times because, well, it’s Carly, and she’s great at giving us those moments. Here, too, though, are strong family relationships, ones that revolve around recognizing the needs in others and treating them with compassion and love.

GOING DOWN EASY is an easy 4.5-star read for me. I can’t wait to see what Carly has in store for Lucas and Derek, and look forward to GOING DOWN FAST, the next book in the series.

Michel’s Review

Steadfast by Sarina Bowen is the second book in the True North Series.  It can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order.

Readers met Jude in Bittersweet.  He is the ex con and recovering drug addict that came to work on the Shipley Apple Farm for six months during his probation period.  He was convicted of killing his former girlfriend’s older brother in an accident resulting from being under the influence of narcotics.  Not only did he lose his freedom, he also lost the only woman he ever loved.  He is now a pariah in the small town of Colebury for killing the sheriff’s son.  Small towns have long memories and protect their own.  Now that his job is over at the farm he has no other options but to return to Colebury and face his ugly past. Not only will he have the daily struggles managing his drug addiction but also will have to face Sophie Haines.

On his return to Colebury, he finds his father’s auto shop is in worse financial condition than when he left.  His father has sunk deeper into his alcoholism.  His first course of action is to try to rebuild the failing business.  The sheriff wants him out of town and is using his influence and power to keep Jude from succeeding.  Jude is being harassed by the local law and his father’s garage is being forced to shut down.

Aside from the financial and business problems, Jude is struggling with his addiction.  He holds onto his weekly meetings at NA as his lifeline.  His other lifeline is the Thursday night dinners at the Shipley Farm.  He’s struggling but staying strong until he runs into Sophie Haines after a meeting.

Sophie was devastated after the accident that not only took her brother’s life but also took the love of her life away.  Her life changed just as drastically as Jude’s life did.  She’s moved on and has tried to carve out a new life but the aftermath of the accident is holding her prisoner in her small town.  Her family was completely destroyed and she is struggling to keep what’s left of their home going.  Her mother is broken.  Her father has become cruel, indifferent, and spiteful.  When he learns Jude has returned to town, he has become even more hateful.  Once Sophie runs into Jude and sees a different man than the one she loved, she’s even more determined to find out the truth about what really happened in the accident that destroyed so many lives.

Jude and Sophie were meant to be together.  They will have to conquer the past, live for today, and strive to make a better future.  The truth will finally set them both free and give them peace once and for all.  They will finally be able to love one another without anything holding them back.

Once again Sarina Bowen wrote a powerful story.  She gave the readers a truthful view of drug addiction.  She also showed how determination and perseverance are worth the effort.  I admired Sophie’s unconditional love and Jude’s commitment to becoming the man Sophie deserved to love.

Steadfast was an emotional and powerful novel.

Michel’s Review

Although Wild Ride by Chantal Fernando is a novella, it packs a punch.  It transitions the Wind Dragons series in a new direction.  It begins to build a solid alliance between the Wind Dragons MC and The Wild Men MC ( WDMC rivals).

Readers have met Talon, the president of Wild Men MC, in the previous Wind Dragon novels.  Talon is very dynamic and a bit mysterious.  He has also been a thorn in
the Wind Dragons side.

Talon has more than the Wind Dragons to worry about.  His own club is falling apart.  There seems to be a secret uprising in his own club.  Murder has been committed and he doesn’t know why.  He doesn’t know who to trust within his club.  This is the worst time to fall in love.  Or it can be the one thing that helps him get through these troubled times.

Once again Chantal Fernando added another compelling segment in the Wind Dragons MC.

September 28, 2001

Seventeen days ago, my life caught fire.
Two planes. Two towers. Nothing will ever be the same.
The fire at Ground Zero is still burning, and somewhere inside the smoky piles of rubble is my father. Do I want them to find him? For the first week, I did. I stayed home from school every day and stared at the TV, praying I’d see them pull my dad from what’s left.
I told myself over and over that he couldn’t be gone. David Wentworth was too strong to be taken down like that. He’d show them all. My dad would come crawling out of the pile of debris, still wearing his dark suit. He’d probably pull other people out, too. My dad is like that. He does things people say are impossible.
But the second week, my mom said I had to go back to school. When I told her I wouldn’t go because I was waiting for my dad to be rescued, her shoulders fell.
“He’s gone, Andrew.”
“You don’t know that. Dad’s a fighter.”
She shook her head. “I know it’s hard for a thirteen-year-old to wrap his head around. I know. You want him to be here, and I do, too. But he’s gone. It’s just you and me now.”
I glared at her, my throat burning. How could she give up on him like that? I’d never give up on my dad. I went back to my spot in his favorite leather chair in our living room and turned up the news on TV.
But after two weeks, my school counselor came to our house to see me. He frowned and told me no one could survive for two weeks in there. Then he gave me a pamphlet titled, “It’s Okay to Cry.” I crumpled up his advice on grieving and threw it in the trash.
I wasn’t going to cry. My dad wouldn’t want that. He’d always told me a man’s true measure was his strength.
“Chin up, Andrew. You’re a Wentworth. We’re made of steel.”
Today we’re having a memorial service for him. My chin will stay up, and my back will stay straight. When I look at the family pictures of my parents and me on a long table at the funeral home and my eyes start to feel watery, I pinch my leg through the pocket of my suit pants. The burning sting in my thigh makes me angry instead of sad.
Better. Dad used to yell at people from his company sometimes, so I know he wouldn’t mind me being angry. At night, when I’m staring up at the stars me and Dad stuck on my ceiling when I was little, my stomach twists and hurts with the anger I feel for the men who killed my dad.
They murdered thousands of people. I’m not the only kid without a dad now. Everyone is scared. Nothing will ever be the same.
My mom covers her mouth with her hand, crying as one of her friends squeezes her arm and talks to her. They did that, too. They made my mom cry. My dad wouldn’t stand for that.
Since he’s gone, I have to be the strong one now. I have to take care of my mom like he would. I have to think about what dad would want for us. I have to hold on tight to my need for those men to pay for what they did to my dad.
The firefighters will eventually extinguish the smoldering fire at Ground Zero, but the fire burning inside of me will never go out.

Quinn is a survivor. Since escaping from a horrific home life, she’s had to learn to take care of herself and her younger sister on the streets of New York City. Andrew Wentworth knows all too well what fear and loss feel like, and has worked hard to create a life where he is completely in control. When Quinn’s and Andrew’s worlds intersect, the balance and boundaries that each has created will be tested.

 

Any book by Brenda Rothert is going to be on my TBR. As a longtime fan, I know that Brenda’s books will not disappoint, and, oh, my goodness, did she ever knock it out of the park with HIS. I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite of Brenda’s books to date, and one of her most engaging stories ever. I was fully invested in Quinn’s and Andrew’s story from the first page, and absolutely could not put this book down.

 

There are many secrets within the story, ones that each reader should uncover on their own, so I don’t want to say too much for fear of giving anything away. Suffice to say that HIS is a must-read, one that I would recommend without hesitation. HIS is an engaging, action-packed, sexy 5-star read, and I hope to see more of these characters in the future.

Holt spotted Naiya at a table with Ally as soon as he entered the bar.

Ever watchful, Tank stood beside Naiya, his hand in his cut, his eyes darting from side to side as he searched for danger.

“Darlin’.” Holt leaned over to kiss her and she pulled away. He supposed he deserved that, but right now he wasn’t in a mood to play games. His brothers had taken Michael out back to await Holt’s justice and after Holt had let loose his anger, he wanted nothing more than to hold his woman in his arms. Preferably, naked and in his bed. But first he’d have to gain her forgiveness.

Naiya glared, her eyes dropping to his blood-smeared hand. “Is that Maurice’s blood? Ally said you beat him up.”

He pushed her hair back behind her ear, trailing his fingers down her neck. God, she was beautiful. Sexy. Fiery. And his. What the hell had he been thinking walking away and leaving her unprotected? “Nah. That’s Michael’s blood. I had to teach him a lesson. He made the mistake of messing with a Sinner’s woman in a Sinner bar in the Sinners’ town.”

Naiya stared at him aghast. “You beat him up, too?”

“Anyone who hurts you. Anyone who touches you. Anyone who makes scared. Anyone who makes you cry. I’ll rip out their hearts, break their bones, and drown in their fucking blood to keep you safe.”

“That’s kind of romantic in a terrifying, morbid, ruthless, outlaw-biker kinda way,” Ally said. “Doug just says ‘love ya, babe’ or ‘keep safe.’”

“It’s only romantic if the guy is actually around to do it,” Naiya said, slapping Holt’s hand away. “But if he drops you off at a hotel in a strange town and leaves you to fend for yourself while he drives off to get himself killed, it loses its effect.”

“You looked after yourself pretty good.” Holt pulled his chair closer, rested his hand on her knee. “Smart move coming here when you saw Michael sniffing around.”

Naiya pushed at his hand, but he held her fast, stroking his thumb along the inside of her thigh.

“What was I supposed to do?” Her voice rose in pitch. “Go to the police? I may have been living a civilian life, but I spent six years with the Black Jacks. I know the kind of power the clubs have. I know how things work. And I know I’ll be happy when I leave town and get away from all things MC.”

“You also know you gotta listen to your man. And your man wants you to stay with the Sinners until I’ve dealt with Viper.” Holt tilted her head back with one finger under her chin, then leaned in and kissed her, his free hand ready to grab her wrist if she tried to slap him.

Which she did, because his Naiya had a spine of steel.

“Who says you’re my man?”

“I do.” He met her gaze, watched her eyes darken to brown.

“It sure didn’t feel like you were my man when you left.” She pulled away, and Holt gritted his teeth. Didn’t she understand that he had come back for her? That for now he had put aside his quest for revenge to keep her safe?

“When I put you in the position of having to pull that weapon, I realized I’d brought you back into a world you don’t want to be in. I didn’t want to waste any time getting you out.” He traced the bow of her mouth, pleased when her lips parted at his touch. She couldn’t be that angry. After all, she was still here, and she had come to the brothers to ask them to warn him.

“I can take myself out.” She drew his hand away. “I’ve got interviews set up in different states . . .” Her voice trailed off when Holt frowned. How could he protect her if she left? Viper would send men to chase her wherever he went. Sweat trickled down his back. This reunion wasn’t going exactly as expected.

“You don’t leave,” he blurted out. “You don’t go.”

She studied him for a long moment, and then she stroked a light finger over his jaw, her voice soft, as if they were alone and not in the bar with the Sinners watching them and Tank and Ally sitting at their table. Like she’d forgiven him for leaving her. “You’re lucky I understand your bossy, evil biker ways.”

Yes! Forgiven. Holt heaved a sigh of relief. “I’m gonna take you back to the clubhouse and show you just how evil I can be.” He covered her hand with his, and pressed his lips to her fingertips. Tracey’s Review

I love, love, love Jill Shalvis’ books, every single one of them. When I hear that a new one is coming out, there’s no question that I will be reading it. New book in a beloved series? Great. New series? Awesome. If Jill’s written it, I’m reading it.

SWEET LITTLE LIES is the first book in Jill’s Heartbreaker Bay series. Set in San Francisco, and full of the quirky and lovable characters that are part of all of Jill’s books, this one had me from word one. Pru Harris is the do-gooder to end all do-gooders. Feeling responsible for something that happened years before, something that changed the course of many lives, Pru has made it her mission in life to right what she sees as the wrongs done to others by giving them something back to make up for their losses. Finn O’Riley is one of those people. He doesn’t know what Pru’s about, he just knows that he’s never met anyone like her, and wants to know her a lot better.

“You’ve got an interesting job…”
“Yes…Interesting. And fun, too.”
“Fun.” Finn repeated the word like it didn’t compute. “Now there’s something I haven’t had in a while.”
“You know, in some circles I’m known as the Fun Whisperer.”

One of the things that I love most about Jill’s books is the dialogue. Sassy, snarky, often sexy, but never boring. Jill has mastered the art of the verbal, and I love seeing the words that flow between the characters, as well as the interior dialogue, because it never disappoints. Pru and Finn are perfectly matched here, and the whole cast of supporting characters keep right up with them. This, along with the relationships of the tightly-knit community in Heartbreaker Bay, made me feel like being surrounded by a group of people that are the best kind of folks to hang out with.

Another thing that Jill does extremely well is sexy time. Finn is one hot ticket, and, if Pru is the Fun Whisperer, then he is the Panty Whisperer. Spark, sizzle, intense combustible chemistry, call it what you will, but these two have it in abundance. It is a true pleasure watching their relationship unfold.

5 stars for SWEET LITTLE LIES and the residents of Heartbreaker Bay. I am really looking forward to spending more time with Finn, Pru, and the rest of the gang, and can’t wait for THE TROUBLE WITH MISTLETOE, coming this fall.
