“Come now, Miss Tempest, my uncle expects me to dance with one of you,” he said as he came wavering up to her. “You cannot stand here all night.”

She looked around for her sister, Lady Aveley. Anyone. “I-I-I, oh dear. Mr. Rowland, I don’t believe—” she stammered out, even as Mr. Rowland took her hand, his strong, sure fingers lacing around hers.

No man had ever just come up and claimed her before for the simple reason that Kempton was a small village, and everyone knew (thanks in no small part to Mrs. Bagley-Butterton) that dancing with Lavinia was akin to asking to have your toes trimmed—or those of your neighbors—or to have something valuable broken.

Or a section of your house scorched.

Mr. Rowland, completely unaware of the mortal danger into which he was placing himself and a good portion of London society, just caught hold of her hand and tugged her out onto the floor, utterly and completely deaf to her protests.

“No, please, sir, I don’t think this is wise,” she told him. And she meant it. This was a very bad notion.

But unfortunately, her protests had no effect on Mr. Rowland, horrible scoundrel that he was …

Has that been mentioned as yet? That Mr. Alaster Rowland, the presumptive heir to his uncle’s barony, is the worst sort of knave? It should be. And often.

He was also the most handsome devil Lavinia Tempest had ever met. Or had held her hand. Or smiled down at her with a wicked light in his eyes.

Lavinia had never seen brown eyes hold that sort of promise, the kind that sent a shiver of something so delicious, so dangerous, down her spine that she made a note right there and then to add a new rule to her list at her first opportunity:

No. 83. A proper gentleman should not make one’s insides get so very warm.

In truth, as Mr. Alaster Rowland slid his hand around her waist, took her other hand in his, something altogether improper happened to Lavinia.

It had to be improper, for it certainly wasn’t proper.

“Mr. Rowland, I cannot,” she protested one last time, when to her horror, the band struck up a cotillion.

A cotillion? The last time she’d tried to dance a cotillion, Lady Essex’s house, Foxgrove, had caught fire.

Yet here was Mr. Rowland, laughing and leaning closer. “But of course you can,” he whispered in her ear, his breath warm against her skin.

It was as if he had brushed his fingers there —right against the curve of her neck. It was so intimate, so promising a gesture, that it left Lavinia in a blinding daze.

Yet Lavinia, the girl who had made a study of all things proper, knew exactly how to behave when all was proceeding at a proper pace, but right now she was being steered down a path she’d never taken before and assailed by a river of improper desires.

At least she assumed they were desires, for it was a dangerous, heady sort of warmth spreading through her limbs.

That, and something else happened. Her feet—which before had always seemed two sizes too big—untangled. It was as if the warmth of Mr. Rowland’s touch, his teasing glance, his confidence in her, awakened a very graceful part of her.

Lavinia straightened, head held just so, and a long-forgotten admonishment from the dancing master Lady Hathaway had hired years ago, tripped through her thoughts.

Dancing is all about elegance.

And right there and then, Lavinia felt elegant. Not because her gown was proper. Or that she was standing on the dance floor of Almack’s (though that certainly helped) but because the man gazing down at her held her, not at arm’s length and in obvious fear, but with all the proper care and respect of a gentleman.

Moments later, Lavinia Tempest found herself dancing.

Perfectly. Like a lady. Mr. Rowland moved, as did everyone else, and Lavinia moved as well.

And in the right direction.

Chelsey Young’s dad was a rock star. Glamorous, right? But late nights, frequent travelling, and watching endless women rub their bodies against Lukas Young’s in a bid for his attention wasn’t exactly how Chelsey planned to spend her senior year of high school.

So when Kye Burke, of the ultra-sexy band Dirty B, sets his sights on Chelsey, she figures the best way to get him off her back is by taking his sexy butt to bed.

But after one night together, Kye has no intention of staying away from Chelsey, especially when she’s kissing him one minute then pushing him away the next. From watching her father, Chelsey knows the rock star lifestyle that Kye leads—being away for long stretches of time, girls throwing themselves at him on the regular, shirtless photos showing up in his inbox ten times a day. She wants no part of it.

Kye is determined for Chelsey to get to know him, the real him behind the rock star persona. But that isn’t so easy when Kye’s schedule will take him away for days, weeks, even a month or two at a time, which is a dealbreaker for Chelsey. Long distance means temptation to stray, and infidelity was the reason her own parents split. She knows it’s not fair to project her own insecurities onto Kye, but some things are unavoidable.

But Kye Burke isn’t Lukas Young.

And, distance or not, he’s going to damn well prove it.

“What,” Chelsey exclaims, “the hell is that?”

With a wide smile spreading across my face, I shove my hands in my pockets like a teenage boy and look at her. “A Christmas tree.”

“Are those . . . penises?”

“Technically, dildos.”

“Like real ones?” She jerks her alarmed gaze to me.

“No. Just plastic.”

She flicks her tongue across her lips. “Uh-huh. Why do you have penises across your Christmas tree?”

“Because he’s an immature little bastard,” Leila answers for me.

“You didn’t stop me,” I shoot back.

“Hell no I didn’t. I cannot wait to see Mom’s face when she sees this!”

“When she sees what?” Mom’s voice creeps through the house ominously, and the close of the door after her sounds like the signal that I should run away.

“Uh . . . I’m just gonna go . . .to the store. . . .” I shuffle toward the door that connects the front room with the kitchen.

Chelsey lifts her eyebrows in amusement, and Dad grabs the back of my shirt so I can’t escape.

You wouldn’t think I was twenty-four. For numerous reasons, obviously.

“Kye Burke, why are there tiny penises on my Christmas tree?”

Her voice is calm. Really calm. I’m even more convinced that I should run. “Merry Cock-mas?”

Mom’s expression is somewhere between insane amusement and extreme frustration.

“I’m just gonna come back later . . .” Chelsey whispers, edging toward the living room door. “When there are less . . . cocks.”

“Good idea! I’ll come with you.” I wrestle out of Dad’s grip and dart behind him, through the kitchen, and into the hall.

Chelsey laughs and grabs my arm, dragging me back into the room. “I said I was going. I didn’t say you were escaping this cock-up.”

“Great choice of words,” Dad chuckles.

Mom pinches the bridge of her nose. “I should have known that when three boys left, one boy would have to make the impression of three,” she says, mostly to herself. “I should have known that the one who never left his little peep alone at two would one day decorate my tree in cocks.”

“Mom! What the hell?” I sputter.

“I should have known that his ball-hoarding obsession at six was a sign of things to come,” she sighs heavily and drops her hand. “After all, there’s one in every boyband. I thought I was ready for this.” Then, she turns to me. “Kye, son, we love you anyway, but I have to ask. Are you gay?”

Chelsey lets go of me, and laughter rips from her. Leila laughs, too, her book falling to the floor. Dad covers his face with his hands, and Mom just stands there in the middle of the room, her eyes wide. Her hands are now clasped in front of her sympathetically, and the tiny upturn of the right side of her mouth explains it all.

“Well played, Mother,” I say reluctantly, walking back toward the front door. “Well. Played.”

 4.5 StarTracey’s Review

Chelsey Young has seen what it’s like to be involved with a rockstar. As the daughter of one herself, she’s experienced first hand what the long-distance, fame, and endless temptation can do to a marriage, and she wants none of it. Kye Burke, one fourth of the band the Dirty B.’s, understands why Chelsey’s gun shy about getting involved with him, but he’s up to the task of showing her just how different he is.

“Know that if you fight this, it’s futile. I know you love me, and I’m so…in love with you that the idea of letting you go is a…fairy tale. I don’t do fairy tales. I do real life, and you’re my real life. I’m gonna fight for this, for you, until your feel the same as I do.”

DIRTY TRICKS is the fourth book in Emma Hart’s The Burke Brothers series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Because of the heartbreak she’s dealt with at the hands of her famous father, Chelsey has perfected the tough cookie facade. One night of letting her guard down, of giving in to the heat between her and Kye, though, and it’s all she can do to keep her head when he’s around. As for Kye, he’s wanted Chelsey for as long as he can remember, and he’s not giving up. I really loved watching these two interact, laughing out loud on more than one occasion. Their dialogue is wonderful, and Emma has created a whole cast of characters that are absolutely engaging, and a treat to read. Although this was my first time reading this series, I can’t wait to go back and read all the other books. 4.5 sexy, smart-alecky, heartwarming stars, and a recommendation to add the entire series to your TBR.

The Burke Brothers – Book 2

By Emma Hart

On the heels of Dirty Secret, here is a sizzling hot romance featuring another Burke brother and the girl he can’t resist, from the New York Times bestselling author of the Game series.

Walking out on my wedding wasn’t my best idea.

Neither was throwing my cell in the lake and taking a job as PA for Dirty B, America’s favorite rock band, complete with every teen girl’s dream man, the eldest of the Burke brothers.

Tate Burke is pure sex. Women actually throw their panties at him during shows. And Ella Dawson is the lucky little thing that gets to escort their fangirling butts out when he’s done with them.

Yay.

He’s a cocky son of a bitch, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. Every now and then Ella gets a rare glimpse of the Tate behind the “bad boy” act, and it attracts her in the most annoying way. The most annoying, heart-thumping, panty-wetting way.

When her abusive ex turns up at the hotel room Ella and Tate are sharing, raging mad, she knows she’ll need more than just a little protection. Tate sees red, and Ella can’t help but lean on him, despite his bad-boy ways.

And now? Now, he’s in a whole lot of trouble.

Aidan Burke is the perfect rebound guy for Jessie Law after she catches her asshole ex-boyfriend with his hands down some other girl’s pants. In This Life

By Christine Brae

e88cc-goodreads

Buy: Amazon / B & N / ITunes / Smashwords

Synopsis

Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere,
They’re in each other all along.
RUMI

It starts out so simply. Anna runs away to Thailand, drags her best friend Dante with her and spends a few weeks away, taking on other people’s problems while getting away from her own. She meets the enigmatic Jude Grayson, and for as long as it’s clear to both of them that it ends when they leave, she thinks she’s got the perfect fling planned out.

Or does she?

Anna returns home to find that her life is no longer the way it once was, and that she can’t stop thinking about him. She learns through tragedy that nothing she’s ever believed in has turned out to be true. The worst part? The people she loved were keeping a secret from her. And that no matter what she does, no matter how hard she fights against it, every path she takes keeps leading her back to Jude.

This is a story about love, found in a faraway place by two very unlikely people. It is also a story about friendship and loyalty and fighting for what you have despite the illogical mystery of fate. With the struggle between morality and guilt, faith and acceptance, there comes a learning that even the best-laid plans are powerless against the alignment of the universe.

From the beaches of Thailand to the streets of New York, three friends, Anna, Dante, and Jude will learn the hard way that once providence steps in, there is nothing in the world that can change what is truly meant to be.

Robin’s Review

Kismet. Destiny. Fate. How do you know if you are on the path fate has planned for you? What if there is something far greater, far more powerful, just waiting to step in? This is a theme author Christine Brae explores in her new standalone novel titled In this Life, where we are able to experience the richness of Anna Dillon’s story.

Brae introduces us to Anna at a time in her life that is filled with sadness and strife, when she flees the drama of her home life for something much different in a small fishing village of Thailand. All Anna really wants is to forget the emotional pain, so she convinces her best friend, Dante Leola, to volunteer with her on a medical mission at an orphanage. It’s on the tsunami-ravaged beaches of Thailand, where Anna and Dante meet Jude Grayson, and all three of their lives become inextricably tied together.

In This Life is a contemporary romance and contemporary women’s literature rolled into one, a journey about friendship, loyalty and love which will captivate and hold your attention until the very last page has been turned. Brae’s words are full of wisdom, both heartbreaking and joyful, both healing and redemptive. It’s an epic adventure of two souls, destined to be together, even as life sees the two of them heading in different directions.

Each of the three primary characters has endearing qualities, which is probably why In This Life became a very emotional read for me. Anna is easy for me to relate to. She experiences growth as a character because of the difficulties that she faces in her life. But In This Life is not only about Anna. This story also concerns the two men who are on this journey with her – Dante and Jude. Anna has feelings that are unique to each man, and Brae’s writing made certain that I was able to experience her feelings and emotions.

Christine Brae’s writing is the very best feature of In This Life. In This Life is Brae’s fourth full-length novel. I’m being completely honest in my assessment when I say that I have never witnessed a more dramatic improvement in writing. Brae’s writing is no longer the writing of an author who is just getting her feet wet. It’s matured, become more polished and descriptive, visceral and full of wisdom. Brae’s descriptive writing was exceptional, assisting me with visualizing scenes in my head.

I would recommend In This Life based on the writing alone, but this story about finding your destiny is what makes this novel special. In This Life is a solid 5-star novel, and I’m adding it to my list of 2016 favorites!

4.5 StarTracey’s Review

A girl walks into a bar…

What happens when an Uptown Girl connects with a man from the other side of the tracks? Pure chemistry, plain and simple. Samantha Jamieson has never wanted for anything. Living a life of privilege, she’s never lacked anything, except unconditional love and the chance to live life on her terms. Clay Kincaid’s childhood is the stuff of nightmares, but he’s finally put his past behind him, creating a life that he can be happy with. When Samantha, running from a fate that she can’t abide, finds herself in Clay’s bar, it isn’t long before ‘Saint’ Clay comes riding to the rescue, and life as they know it takes a most interesting detour.

I have long been a fan of both Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde, so imagine my delight in finding out that these two fabulous ladies were collaborating on a sexy new series. DIRTY SEXY SAINT takes the best of both of these authors and gives readers a brand new set of characters to get to know and love. Samantha is the kind of heroine that I love to read. She’s sassy, spunky, and, although her nickname may be Cupcake, she very quickly learns to hold her own. Clay is one heck of a hot alpha, but he’s more than a stereotype. With a childhood fraught with abuse and desperation, he’s locked down emotionally, although he’s a sucker for a lost cause. He hasn’t earned the nickname of ‘Saint’ for nothing, and it isn’t long before he’s helping Sam figure out her life, while she helps him in ways that he never anticipated.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read. There is heat galore, intrigue, drama, and the kind of characters that you want more of. I can’t wait to get to know Clay’s brothers, Mason and Levi, better, and am thrilled that they will each get their own book. 4.5 dirty, sexy, sweet, naughty stars for DIRTY SEXY SAINT. Add this one to your TBR and thank me later.

***About Erika Wilde***

Erika Wilde (aka Janelle Denison) is the USA Today bestselling author of over 50 contemporary romances for multiple print publishers.

So, why the new pen name?

As Janelle Denison I’ve always written sexy books, but lately my writing has taken on more erotic elements that I wanted to keep separate for readers because not everyone likes their reading material on the spicier, kinkier side of romance. However, please be assured that even as Erika Wilde, you will still get an emotionally layered story with characters you’ll care about and fall in love with. That is always my goal, whether I’m writing straight contemporary romances, or more erotically charged stories.

Currently, I’m working on The Marriage Diaries and making sure that Dean and Jillian enjoy exploring the more erotic side to their marriage. The series will be on-going, with no foreseeable ending as of right now, for as long as readers want to be voyeurs to Dean and Jillian’s sizzling new relationship.

I’m also planning a spin-off series in the future, featuring the hot military men that work security for Dean at Noble and Associates.

SNEAK PEEK AT XAVIER COLD

“You tired?” he asks.

It doesn’t hit me until he mentions being tired on how exhausted I actually am. Tonight’s been stressful, and I’m sure, if I allow myself to close my eyes for even the briefest time, I’d fall asleep on the spot.

But I refuse to let go of Xavier. When I thought they would lock him up and throw away the key, the opportunity to hold him against me anytime I wanted felt like it was quickly being ripped away. So, for now, I choose to stay here, in his presence, breathing him in as much as I possibly can.

I tilt my head up and stare into his light-blue eyes. “I’m ready for bed, but I don’t want to sleep just yet.”

For the first time since the chaos of the day began, Xavier smiles, but it’s not just any smile. It’s the heart-stopping one-sided smirk that drives me out of my ever-loving mind.

“Have I turned my good girl naughty?”

I give him my best wicked grin. “Afraid so. I can’t seem to get enough of you.”

His large hands cradle my face. “Glad to hear it because I’m fucking addicted to you.”

His lips press on mine, and I’m immediately lost in his kiss. The stubble on his face scratches my fingertips as I trace his jawline.

“I need you.”

A wicked gleam is in his eyes. “Is that so?”

Xavier bends down and nips my lower lip. “You don’t know how much it turns me on when you ask for it. It takes every ounce of willpower in my body to stop myself from throwing you down on that bed and ravaging every inch of your body for my pleasure.”

At the very thought of what that would be like, my pulse races under my skin. “What’s stopping you?”

“You’re too sweet for that.” He leans in and runs his nose along my cheek, causing my entire body to quiver with anticipation. “And because you’re not ready to go there— to allow me to have full control— yet.”

“How do you know?”

Tracey’s Review

“What are you doing to me, beautiful? You’re changing me in ways I never thought possible.”

Author Michelle Valentine left readers with one whopper of a cliffhanger in PHENOMENAL X, the kind that has you staring at the page thinking ‘What the HECK just happened? Are you kidding me? I have to wait HOW long to find out what’s next?!’ Yeah, that kind of a cliffhanger. Suffice to say that XAVIER COLD, the second book in Michelle’s Hard Knocks series, was heavily anticipated by fans of the first book, and well worth the wait.

The rivalry between Xavier Cold and Rex ‘The Assassin’ Risen, wrestlers for the Tension group, has reached an all-time high. Having lost control in the ring, Xavier finds himself banned from all things Tension for three months. Determined to keep his suspension from destroying their relationship, Xavier and Anna return to Detroit, X’s childhood home, and the dwelling place of all of his personal demons. But the road to happily ever after is not an easy one, and these two have their work cut out for them.

Where PHENOMENAL X is the story of the beginning of Anna’s and Xavier’s relationship, this book is about overcoming the things that keep us from being the best version of ourselves, and creating our own reality. It’s about their love for each other, and the freedom that this kind of love offers. And, finally, it’s about the redemption that comes through such unconditional love.

I could not read this book quickly enough. It’s full of grittiness and intrigue, secrets that are jaw-dropping, and the kind of love that completely changes the landscape of lives. 5 phenomenal stars for XAVIER COLD, and kudos to Michelle Valentine for another awesome read.

Synopsis

From the author of the USA Today bestselling A Little Too Far series, the first in an edgy new contemporary romance series that follows a family on the run…

As the oldest son of a Chicago crime lord, Robert Delgado always knew how dangerous life could be. With his mother dead and his father in prison, he’s taking charge of his family’s safety—putting himself and his siblings in witness protection to hide out in a backwater Florida town.

Fourth grade teacher Adri Wilson is worried about the new boy in her class. Sherm is quiet and evasive, especially when he’s around his even cagier older brother. Adri can’t help her attraction to Rob, or the urge to help them both in whatever way she can.

But the Delgados have enemies on two sides of the mob—their father’s former crew and the rival family he helped take down. It’s only a matter of time before someone finds them. And if Rob isn’t careful, Adri could end up in the crossfire…

Chapter 2

Adri

“Is this straight?” Dad asks, peering in the mirror across from the front door and messing with the badge on the breast pocket of his blue shirt.

There is almost no crime on our little island because Dad is legendary for taking down drug rings and poachers, but when it comes to the little things, like pinning his badge on straight, he still needs help.

That’s why I’m here.

When Mom died last spring, I came back from Jacksonville so I could live at home and help Dad. He and Mom were high school sweethearts and married not long after graduation. He’s always been taken care of. I don’t want him to be alone.

I move to where he is and turn him, unpinning the badge and straightening it. I smooth his salt and pepper hair off his forehead and stretch up on my toes to kiss the smooth patch of cheek above the line of his beard. “I seriously doubt they’re going to send the Chief of Police home for a dress code infraction.”

“We’ll see,” he chuckles, giving my blond ponytail a gentle tug. “You ready for your first day influencing the youth of Port St. Mary?”

I was over the moon when I got the call three days ago that Mrs. Martin had had surgery and they needed a long-term sub for her class. Not that I’m happy they hacked out her gallbladder or anything, but her loss is my gain, so to speak.

I come from a long line of educators. Mom was my first grade teacher. Both of her sisters, her father, and her grandfather taught as well. You could say it’s in my DNA. I resisted it for a while, thought I wanted to go into finance, but by my junior year at Clemson I had to finally admit to myself teaching was what I really wanted to do. I changed my major to Education and finished my credential just before Mom died.

Since her death, it’s felt even more urgent to me to teach—like maybe following in her footsteps will somehow keep her spirit alive. But Port St. Mary and the surrounding communities are small, and teaching jobs are pretty scarce. I was afraid I was going to have to try elsewhere come fall. This was a prayer answered…which makes me a little afraid I might have had something to do with poor Mrs. Martin’s gallbladder flaring up. And now it’s starting to feel like one of those “be careful what you wish for” scenarios.

I rub my sweaty palms down my slacks. “What happens if they hate me?”

Dad wraps me in his arms and squeezes me in a bear hug, crushing the air out of my lungs. “They’re going to love you, punkin. Your mom would be so proud of you right now,” he says, a catch in his voice. “I hope you know that.”

I swallow back the lump in my throat and look up at him. I can’t even remember the last time he’s brought her up out of the blue like this. “I know, Dad, but thanks for saying so.” He lets me go and I shoulder my messenger bag. “Time to face the music.”

We step out the back door to where my old electric blue Chevy Lumina is parked in the driveway, next to Dad’s only slightly less conspicuous cruiser. Dad watches as I slide in and turn the key. The engine chugs but doesn’t turn over.

I blow out a breath and pop the hood. By the time I grab the monkey wrench on the floor of the passenger side and get out of the car, Dad already has the hood propped up and is looking over the engine compartment.

“Don’t mess with Frank, Dad.” I point my finger in a circle at the guts of my poor Frankencar. Me and my best friend Chuck rebuilt most of the insides from junkyard parts when we took auto shop our senior year in high school. “It’s a delicate balance.”

He grins and steps back, his hands in the air. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”

I will always love Frank—he was my first—but I know I need a new car. Dad’s offered me Mom’s T-Bird, but I’m twenty-three. I’m supposed to be responsible for myself at this point. And besides, I’d rather he sold Mom’s car and put the money towards his retirement. Even though Port St. Mary is pretty sleepy most of the time, everyday he goes to work, I worry.

I reach between the radiator and the engine and give the alternator a sharp rap with the wrench, then slip back into the driver’s seat. When I turn the key, Frank chugs twice, same as always, then rumbles to life.

Dad ducks into the cruiser and gives me a little salute as I pull out.

Port St. Mary Elementary is only about two miles from home. It takes a grand total of eight minutes to drive there. Technically, it’s a one-room schoolhouse. The tiny twelve-space parking lot butts up against an octagonal building, which, in fact, is just one big room inside. In the exact center of the building are the bathrooms and storage closets, and from there, folding accordion partitions section off each wedge of the octagon. Each wedge is a grade level, kinder through sixth, and a multipurpose room. To the right of the parking lot is a doublewide “portable” that houses the school offices and small staff room. Behind that, children are already gathering in the playground, which is really just a weed-infested lot with a slide and jungle gym that has been there since before I started kindergarten here.

When I walk around the octagon to the door marked with a big yellow four and step inside, it’s like deja vu all over again. Mrs. Martin (she told me to call her Pam when we talked on the phone about the lesson plan yesterday, but I can’t bring myself to) has had the same posters on the walls since the dawn of time. The presidential chart ends with Reagan. She had already been teaching fourth grade in this same classroom for, like, twenty years when I had her.

I move to her desk, to the right of the door, and set my bag on it. And that’s when I see the note from Principal Richmond.

A new student.

I brush my palms down my slacks again, a fresh jolt of nerves twisting my insides into knots. I was already going to be way over my head with a classroom full of nine-year-olds fresh off Christmas vacation and all sugared up on candy canes.

I look over the instructions. Sherman William Davidson needs his reading comprehension assessment, writing and grammar evaluation, and his math skills worksheet completed by the end of the week.

I blow a wisp of hair off my forehead and unpack my toothpaste and toothbrush, my journal, and a few of my favorite colored pens into Mrs. Martin’s desk, careful not to displace her things too much. I’m just pulling the assessments for the new kid from the file cabinet when the classroom door opens. I hear Principal Richmond’s gravel voice before I turn around. “…and his classroom is here. We just got word a few days ago that our regular fourth grade teacher is out on medical leave, but Sherman will be in good hands with Ms. Wilson. She’s a very capable substitute.”

I take a deep breath as I turn and hope he’s not lying.

I substituted five times during fall semester. For the most part, everything went great until I subbed for Mrs. Yetz’s eighth grade class the week before winter break. Somehow, what started out as a math lab on probability devolved into a liar’s dice tournament, complete with money changing hands. I wasn’t sure they’d call me back after that.

But when I see Principal Richmond waddle his round frame through the door, I straighten the scarf I tied over my favorite teal sweater and try to look as confident in what he said as he does.

“Ms. Wilson,” he says, waving me over. “This is your new student, Sherman.”

Sherman is a wiry little thing with unruly brown hair and clothes that hang off him a little. He looks as if he’d vanish into himself if given the chance.

“He goes by Sherm,” the man standing next to him says.

I look up into some of the most amazing eyes I’ve ever seen. Heavy dark brows curve over irises the color of honey with burgundy flecks through them. Thick brown waves are loose around a strong face with angled cheekbones, and a square jaw covered in two-day stubble. Set in flawless olive skin are lips so firm and red they make me forget the frown that’s turning them down slightly at the corners. He’s just so…gorgeous, like something out of a magazine or a movie. And he’s tall—well over six feet of broad shoulders tapering to narrow hips under his blue button-down shirt. The tails are loose over pressed jeans that fit him just so. Everything about him is tailored and cultured and nothing like any of the year-rounders who live on this bumpkin island. But it’s not just the way he looks. A blend of confidence and something else I can’t identify but makes him feel a little intimidating wafts off him with the spicy cologne I keep catching hints of. He’s nothing like anyone I’ve ever met, even at Clemson.

I feel my jaw dangling and snap it closed, pulling myself together long enough to extend an arm. “I’m Adri.”

Principal Richmond clears his throat, and when I flick a glance his direction, I know my ogling didn’t go unnoticed. His brow is deeply furrowed and his frown curves so low it makes him look like one of those marionettes, where their chin is a whole different piece of wood than the rest of their face.

My eyes bulge and I shift my outstretched hand to Sherm. “I mean, Miss Wilson. Welcome to Port St. Mary, Sherm.”

The boy just looks at me with sad eyes the color of his…father’s?

My gaze gravitates back to the guy towering over me. Could he be Sherm’s dad? He looks way too young to have a nine-year-old. He also looks all business. There’s nothing soft or nurturing in his cold, sharp gaze as it flicks around the classroom, silently assessing.

“What’s on the other side of those partitions?” he asks Principal Richmond.

“The third and fifth grade classrooms,” he answers.

The guy’s eyes continue to scan the room. “He’ll spend all day in here?”

The principal nods. “Except when he’s on the playground.”

“Is there security on campus?”

Principal Richmond looks momentarily perplexed, rubbing his round stomach as if he’s thinking with it. “Not as such. We have yard monitors during recess and lunch, and the teachers are responsible for the children when they’re here in class.”

“What about lunch?”

“He can bring his own lunch, or buy a bag lunch from Nutritional Services for three dollars. Either way, if it’s nice weather, the children eat outside at the picnic tables. On rainy days, we open the partitions and they eat inside as a group.”

The guy reaches into his pocket, but Principal Richmond holds up his hand to stop him when he comes out with a thick wad of cash. “We don’t allow students to carry money on campus. When we’re done here, I’ll take you to the office and have you purchase a scan card for Nutritional Services.”

The guy nods, then moves to the door and jiggles the knob. “The exterior doors are left unlocked?”

“During school hours, yes.” Principal Richmond answers, moving to my desk and shuffling through the papers I pulled for Sherm.

The guy’s full lips narrow into a tight line and he scowls at the door. He spins and starts toward the door in the back of the room, leaving no stone unturned.

I wipe my hands down my slacks again and decide just to ask. “So, you’re Sherm’s father?”

His feet stall on the chipped linoleum and he seems to finally notice I exist. “Brother,” he answers, and that one word seems to carry the weight of the world with it as it falls from his mouth.

His eyes make a slow sweep of my face, and as they trail down my neck, the front of my sweater, over my hips and down my legs, I’m frozen in place, paralyzed by the intensity of his gaze.

Principal Richmond shoves some papers in my face, breaking the spell. “You still have fifteen minutes until the bell. Maybe you can get Sherman started on these.”

“Um…” I grab the papers out of his hand as Big Brother blinks, some of the thickest lashes I’ve ever seen hiding those incredible eyes. “Yeah. We’ll do that…”

Principal Richmond guides Big Brother to the door. “Let’s get out of their way and let them get started. I’m sure Sherman will have a positive experience here. Children his age tend to adjust quickly,” he’s saying as the door swings closed behind them.

Michel’s Review

When I read the synopsis for Outside The Lines by Lisa Desrochers I knew I had to read this book.  Once I began to read this book I became immersed in the characters world.  Their story came to life and I couldn’t predict which direction the next page was going to take.  Outside The Lines stands on it’s own merit in the romance genre, the romantic suspense genre, the new adult genre, and the organized crime romance sub-genre.  This book will attract readers of all ages.  But what stood out the most about this book was the family dynamics and how they dealt with their life situations.  It was beautifully written, easy to become immersed in, a page turner, and pulled at all of my emotions.  When I finished the book I was wanting more of the Delgado family.  I wanted to see which direction the Delgado family would take next and what sibling was going to be affected most my their choices.

What happens when your family is placed in the witness protection program because your father, the head of an organized crime family, is sentenced to prison?  The Delgado children are in this position. Everything they have known in life is gone within moments.  Their lives are at stake.  Their future is not promising.  They are having to learn to live a new simplistic lifestyle, which to most people would be normal, but to them is as foreign as stepping into another country.  Their lavish lifestyle is now reduced to small town living and generic labels.  Their educations, future professions ( including becoming the next Boss), and ambitions have been re-altered into something they have to make fit.  They’ve had to step outside of their dreams and become something they never imagined.  The only thing that is working in their new lives is the fact that they are all still together.  Their family love and values is the only thing holding them together in their new lives.  At times it may seem like they are all falling apart but when push comes to shove they bond together.

Rob Delgado was once a prince groomed to take over the family business.  Although his world revolved around violence and intimidation, he lived an opulent, luxurious lifestyle.  Now he is the head of his immediate family and is running from the world he was born to rule.  He has to keep his brothers and sisters safe until he can figure out who is trying to kill them and who is trying to steal his world.  He has no intentions of remaining in the witness protection program.  But until he can figure out how to get back into his own world without compromising his family’s safety, he has to figure out how to live in his new world.

The Delgado’s have been placed in a small coastal town in Florida.  The town is so small that it only has one school.  Rob’s younger brother Sherman has been traumatized by their past.  The kid is barely speaking and has withdrawn into himself.  Rob and his other siblings don’t know how to help Sherman.  But they do know that he needs to get on a normal routine.  When they enroll him in school, the beautiful young teacher not only has a way of making Sherman open up but also has touched Rob in ways he never thought possible.  She is making Rob look at his new life differently.  She is making him question his desire for his old life.  But Rob can’t make any kind of commitment or decision because of the threats in his past life.  Until he knows who or what the enemy is he can never move forward.

This novel moved me in so many ways.  I felt for the Delgado family.  They were fish out of water trying to swim upstream in a world they never knew existed.  Not only are they frightened but they are also devastated.  Each of the siblings is trying to accept and fit in a foreign world.  Finding love is the furthest thing from their minds.  They are just trying to survive and make a better life for Sherman.  I felt every emotion each of them experienced. The frustration, the despair, the hopelessness, and the sense of loss.  I also felt the hope build in all of their hearts as Rob begins falling in love with Adri.  It gave all of them a sense of belonging. It gave them hope for a better future.

Lisa Desrochers did a fabulous job in delivering the Delgado Family’s story.  It is only the beginning and I can’t wait for more.

Read Outside The Lines by Lisa Desrochers … it is superb!

About the Author

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

***Chapter One***

Chapter 1

Mark

“Everyone locked and loaded?” Liam Dempsey draws our attention. There’s a part of me that wants to slap him, but then I remember: I’m the guest. It would probably be frowned upon.

“Ready,” Jackson says and bangs the magazine into the rifle. “What’s the plan?”

“We have the location where Aaron’s being held captive. We’ll split into two teams, surround the building, and get him out. The helo will be on standby for extract. Muffin, Twilight, you guys will handle meeting with the CIA agent.” Liam lets us know how this will go down.

He’s the big cheese of our small team. Commander was fine with allowing Muff and me to go on the rescue. First, we know what the hell we’re doing; I could be the damn commander at this point. Second, if it isn’t Aaron, we have the best chance of knowing quickly. I know it is, though. The code word that the CIA agent communicated was the one we’ve used for years. She relayed his area and the best way possible to enter the compound. Of course, deciphering her instructions was difficult, and it left us to make plans for the plans.

“Let’s get this shit done and get back in one piece this time, okay Muff?” There’s no hiding the sarcasm in my voice.

“Fuck off, Dixon.”

“So touchy.” I grin and double-check my gear. As funny as it is, it’s also not funny at all. Jackson Cole was once the leader of our SEAL team when the mission we were tasked with went really wrong. We lost three teammates that day, and all of us suffered injuries both mental and physical. Then we sent Aaron to deal with a lost shipment of weapons and he was killed. Well, possibly not, but still. Each time one of our asses touches down in this fucking place, someone ends up shot or killed. I’d love to be able to forget, but the truth is, I never will. The guys I’ve lost reside in my heart. The memories take hold in all of us, and for some, they torment us. The wondering if we could’ve done something different, remembering their last moments—it’s a heavy burden to carry.

I’ve lost too many friends and too much blood to this hellhole.

“Okay,” Liam says through our earpieces. “Two minutes out.”

Everyone stands, heads toward the back of the plane, and readies for the ride. We’re parachuting in, and there’s a part of me that’s alive for the first time in a while. I live for this shit. The command of the sky, the adventure, the danger—I love it. It’s a part of who I am, and while I don’t regret leaving the Navy, I miss the fun. Being a SEAL was everything to me. I was damn good at it, too. While Aaron and Jackson had no problem getting out and starting Cole Security Forces, I would’ve been buried in my uniform. However, my arm had other ideas and made the choice for me.

Jackson slaps my shoulder. “Ready to be badass again?”

“I never lost it. Unlike you other pussy whipped assholes.”

“At least I get pussy, unlike some shithead who talks a lot of crap,” he mutters under his breath.

“Keep it up, fat boy. You’re starting to earn your call sign again, Muffin.” I pull my goggles down and watch for the light to turn green. There’s no hesitation as I jump out the hatch. The plane fades away as I plummet to, once again, do what I live for.

We all reach the ground safely a few miles from the IED site where this whole mess started.

Liam gives the hand commands as we split into teams of two. If I ever felt like a piece of shit before, it was nothing compared to now. Aaron is possibly still alive and nearby. We didn’t search before, partly because Muff got shot, but I never even considered coming back. They claimed there were no survivors, and we listened.

If it were me, would I be pissed? Fuck yeah, I would. We should’ve looked.

“See that, up on the building?” Dempsey’s voice cuts through the silence.

My eyes dart to where his hand is pointing. I can’t see it clearly, but hanging from the antenna is a red scarf, the go-ahead signal from our contact.

“Charlie better not be fucking us around,” I grumble. I’ve missed the way my body feels right now. Everything inside me is awakened. My mind knows there’s danger and my muscles are tense so I do my best to relax. I can’t be on edge or someone could get hurt. I remember how it felt to lose our teammates on that mission. I remember carrying Brian, Devon, and Fernando’s bodies out. I remember watching the life fade from their eyes. Then to think of all the other drama we’ve dealt with being in the sandbox—this place gives me anxiety.

“She’s on our side. Head in the game,” Jackson snaps as he creeps forward. He’s in the zone. I need to get there before we kick in the door.

As we approach the entrance, Liam comes through with the green light. “Petunia.” His tone is clear. This time we’re using flowers for code names. I liked it better when we used liquor or tobacco . . . more manly. Shows just how much the Navy is breeding pussies now.

Jackson braces his hand against the door, ready to push through, but someone pulls it open first. All of our guns raise, and my gaze locks on the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen.

The woman’s hands slowly raise, and she casually removes the hijab that covers her mouth and hair. “Check out the garden, boys. Petunia.” Her accent is clearly American. “He’s down the hall and knows you’re coming. There are three on guard by his cell. The others are out doing errands. I’m leaving with you, so don’t fuck this up.”

I stand there, staring, unable to form a fucking coherent thought. This is the CIA op? This five-foot-four, drop-dead gorgeous woman? No wonder she gets information. I’d sell my soul if she asked. Her hair is almost black and hangs straight, her eyes are ice blue, and don’t get me started on what I imagine her plump lips doing. I’ve never seen anyone like her. I’ve never reacted to anyone like this before. I want her—any man would—but I want to own her. Every part of my body, especially one in particular, yearns for her. I want to see if her skin is as soft as it looks, if her hair feels like silk, and her voice—I’m done for.

Jackson lowers his gun and then addresses her. “Which door, Charlie?”

“Second on the left. I need a gun.” She puts her hand out.

The need to protect her calls from deep within. “Maybe you should stay out here.”

“And watch you guys get lost? I don’t think so. Gun. Now.” She doesn’t look my way when she replies. She just waits for Jackson to hand her his pistol.

I don’t like this. She may be trained by the CIA, but that’s not saying she can handle combat. “Are you sure you know how to use it, princess?” I ask.

Her eyes meet mine and narrow. Oh, that got her attention. A storm’s raging in those baby blues. She recovers quickly, though, when Jackson places his nine mil in her delicate palm. “Thanks. I’ll let that slide since you obviously aren’t aware of who I am,” she says without taking her eyes off me. “We don’t have a lot of time. Where’s the rest of your team?”

“We are the team,” I reply. Who is this girl? Maybe the CIA needs ten people, but Jackson, Liam, and I could handle this entire thing on our own—the six-guy team we brought is more than enough.

Jackson smirks. “They’re approaching from a different entrance. Let’s go.”

“I’ll lead,” Charlie says and lifts the hijab over her hair.

“We know what we’re doing.” I speak just so she’ll look at me again.

“Wouldn’t want you to get lost or hurt. Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.” Her voice drips with sarcasm. My cock hardens. It fucking hardens on a goddamn mission. I am so fucked.

She opens the door and I push Muffin out of the way. No way is he going to be behind her. Charlie turns to relay a message, and notices he’s not the one following. Her eyes roll, she holds up two fingers, and then she points to the room. The way her ass sways is hypnotic. I lock down the sexual urges flowing through me and focus. The two men trailing me let off two silent shots and then return to following us. We slink through the dirty hallway and come face to face with another guard.

I don’t have a moment to take the sight. Charlie doesn’t hesitate. No more than a breath passes before she raises the nine and shoots him in the head.

I’m in love. It’s official. I’m going to blow my fucking load right here.

This woman is going to be mine.

She turns her head to face me and lifts her lips. The words that come from her mouth go straight to my groin. “Don’t be afraid to pull the trigger next time, princess.” Charlie’s eyes glimmer, and I know right then that this woman will not be owned, but she sure as shit will own me.

EXCERPT

Charli

The storm of raging tension that had surrounded us since our eyes met in the bar changed. The intensity was still off the charts, but this was something different. Whatever it was affected us both. Our breathing suddenly took effort as both of our chests rose and fell.

“Take off that dress.”

Nox’s command echoed throughout the glass stall. I considered arguing, but common sense stopped my rebuttal. I’d already pushed him far enough. Starting at the neckline, I slowly exposed myself, inch by inch. His gaze followed the soaked material. As I revealed my breasts, my nipples hardened, and he let out a low growl. Down the dress went, exposing my tummy and red lace panties.

Shaking his head, Nox ran his finger along the edge of my panties. With his large hands now at my hips, he asked, “Did you do anything I told you to do in my note?”

“No.” My honesty left a trail of vulnerability and shame.

In one quick motion, Nox ripped the lace, and the shredded panties joined my dress on the shower floor. I blinked away the water as he tipped my face upward.

“No more disobeying. Do you understand?”

I nodded—not in acknowledgment of his words, but in response to the rush from once again being in his presence. Nox electrified me in a way I’d never known, and even in the absurdity of our current situation, he was doing it again. The way he scanned my nakedness as his Adam’s apple bobbed tingled my skin.

He hadn’t released my chin. “Say ‘Yes, Mr. Demetri.'”

My chest hurt. “N-Nox.”

His grip tightened.

“Yes, Mr. Demetri.”

Robin’s Review

Aleatha Romig never ceases to amaze me with her ability to weave a multi-layered story, one full of mystery and intrigue. No matter the genre, her writing style is unique and addicting. Thousands of individuals have discovered just how incredible her writing can be by devouring her Consequences series. Whether or not you have read any of her previous novels, do yourself a favor and set aside some time to begin reading Romig’s new Infidelity series.

If you’re hesitant to begin the Infidelity series because of the series name, let me put that to rest. The Infidelity series is not about cheating or a love triangle. According to Romig, “The Infidelity series does not advocate or glorify cheating. This series is about the inner struggle of compromising your beliefs for your heart. It is about cheating on yourself, not someone else.”

We’re introduced to Lennox “Nox” Demetri and Alexandria Charles “Charli” Montague Collins in Betrayal. Just before she is scheduled to begin law school at Columbia, Alex casts aside the meticulous focus on her goals when she meets Nox at Del Mar resort. But Alex is a Montague, and her family has some very different plans for her now that she has graduated from Stanford. When her parents force her hand, Alex makes a decision which could negatively impact the rest of her life so that she can still attend law school.

Alex Collins has cost Nox an outrageous sum of money, and he’s IRATE, to say the least! She lied to him in Del Mar, and he’s about to teach her a lesson she won’t soon forget! Things aren’t always what they seem – isn’t that the way in each of Aleatha Romig’s novels? There are layers, so many layers, in the Infidelity series, and Romig is only just beginning to peel the layers back in Cunning. If Betrayal is the top layer of the story, Cunning just barely breaks the surface. Hold on to your hats because it’s about to get real, and we have three more novels before the Infidelity series is complete!

Aleatha Romig knows just how to pull our strings! She’s very adept at writing a mystery. Nothing in her story happens without purpose, so you want to pay close attention. Romig gives subtle clues. And dark thrillers? Let’s just say that Romig really knows how to stir up my emotions! I laughed, felt anxious and angry. Nox and Charli are just fantastic primary characters! Both of them lead complicated lives, but they sure are easy to love. In Betrayal, Romig captivated me with the special time they had together at Del Mar. Now, I’m on pins and needles, turning over questions in my mind, pondering the possibilities by the many things that I read in Cunning.

Aleatha Romig is a creative writing genius. From what I’ve read so far, the Infidelity series is just outstanding! By stirring up my imagination, Romig has accomplished exactly what she intended to do in this second installment of the Infidelity series. I’m pleased to give Romig a 6-star rating, and I am adding Cunning to my list of 2016 favorites!

Blurb

The first time I met Brody Easton was in the men’s locker room.

It was my first interview as a professional sportscaster.

The famed quarterback decided to bare all.

And by all, I don’t mean he told me any of his secrets.

No. The arrogant ass decided to drop his towel, just as I asked the first question. On camera.

The Super Bowl MVP quickly adopted a new hobby—screwing with me.

When I pushed back, he shifted from wanting to screw with me, to wanting to screw me.

But I don’t date players.

And it’s not because I’m one of the few women working in the world of professional football.

I’d date an athlete.

It’s the other kind of player I don’t date.

You know the type. Good looking, strong, cocky, always looking to get laid.

Brody Easton was the ultimate player.

Every woman wanted to be the one to change him.

But the truth was, all he needed was a girl worth changing for.

Turned out, I was that girl.

Simple right?

Let’s face it. It never is.

There’s a story between once upon a time and happily ever after…

And this one is ours.

Excerpt

“You ready?” Nick slung his bag over his shoulder and lifted his camera. The reporter in front of us wrapped up his interview and shook hands with Easton.

As I’ll ever be. “Sure.”

I stepped forward and extended my hand. “I’m Delilah Maddox with WMBC Sports News.”

A slow grin spread across Easton’s face. He surprised me by leaning in and kissing me on the cheek. “Pleasure to meet you.”

I wasn’t sure if he was baiting me into an argument—expecting me to lash out at him for kissing me when he’d just shaken the last male reporter’s hand—or if he was trying to use his blatant sexuality to throw me off. Either way, I wasn’t playing his game. I cleared my throat and stood straighter, even though my knees felt a little wobbly.

“Do you mind if I ask you some questions?”

“Why else would you be in here?”

I ignored his sarcasm. He was still smiling at me. Actually, it was more like a smirk, and it made me feel like a toy he was about to play with. “You ready, Nick?” My cameraman finished setting up the lighting, then lifted the camera into position and gave me a hand signal.

“Congratulations on the win today, Brody. How is your knee feeling after your first game back?” I lifted my microphone high, knowing Nick was filming in close.

“I feel . . . ” He nonchalantly reached to the towel wrapped around his waist and tugged at the corner. The towel fell to the ground. “Great. I feel great. And how about you? It’s your first trip into the locker room, isn’t it? Do you like what you see so far?” His lips curled up into a full-blown wicked smile.

Before I could catch myself, my eyes dropped to his naked lower half. Shit. He was dangling in the wind. I totally got distracted by just how low the thing dangled. It was probably a full minute before I responded to his question. A full minute of dead air time. Great. “Yes. Umm . . . the locker room is . . . ummm . . . nice.”

I sounded like a total ditz. On air.

The jackass continued interviewing me. “Is it as big as you thought it would be?”

“Ummm . . . it’s much bigger than I imagined.”

His smile grew even wider.

Ugh.

I needed to get back on track or my first locker room interview would become a laughingstock blooper. Viewers had no idea he was naked from the waist down. “Do you think you were at one hundred percent today?”

His eyebrows jumped. “If you’re referring to today’s game, definitely. I had one hundred percent out there on the field. There’re some other areas where I have a lot of growth potential, but my knee felt one hundred percent today.”

His pale green eyes darkened, and I watched his long lashes lower. I followed his line of sight, and suddenly I was staring at his naked package. Again. Damn it. My eyes darted back up, but I felt my cheeks heating. I had to end this, or I was going to be beet red on air.

“Well, welcome back. And congratulations on today’s win.”

I waited until Nick lowered his camera and turned off the light. Then I looked right at Brody Easton’s smug face. “You’re an asshole, you know that?”

His eyes sparkled. “I do.”

I heard the chuckles and high fives at my back as I stormed out of the locker room.

Michel’s Review

The Baller by Vi Keeland is one of the sexiest, downright dirty, and emotional sports romances that I have read.  I was blown away by the emotional story delivered in The Baller.

A beautiful sportscaster and red hot professional quarterback make the ultimate score.  When Brody Easton dares Delilah Maddox to play his game, all bets are off.  He relentlessly pursues her, woes her, and makes her desire his magical touch.  But there is more to Brody Easton than meets the eye.  Behind the arrogant, dirty mouthed quarterback is a man with a heart of gold.  A man with compassion, a giving spirit, and unbreakable loyalty.  He’s willing to give it all to Delilah but she must be willing to open up her heart once again.  She has loved and lost.  She knows the score.  Brody Easton is a game changer.

I am not going to say much more because I don’t want to spoil this exceptional book.  I will say to make sure there’s a box of tissue close by.  Also this book should come with a warning “it may be too hot to handle”.  Vi Keeland has proven that she has brought her winning game to The Baller.  I fell in love with Brody Easton.  I wanted to be Delilah Maddox.  I ached for both of these dynamic people.  I was thrilled when they finally figured out the winning play.

Brody Easton can toss a pass at me anytime.  The man is sex on a stick and I would never block a pass from him.

Don’t miss out on the winning book of the season…read The Baller by Vi Keeland.
