Happy Release : Love Survives by Jennifer Foor

Imagine being in love with the same girl since you were ten years old, only to have her fall for your twin instead. This story is rocky.
It will rip you apart and possibly put you back together again.
I know this because it’s my story.
The pain and anguish experienced in this is what it was like to hold onto hope that some day we’d find each other again. I won’t sugar coat the details of what I went through to have her, nor will I apologize for any actions that led me right back into her life.
Sometimes love isn’t enough.
Sometimes it takes a little fate.

EXCERPT

I can’t help but wonder about my own broken heart. Why am I holding onto some hope that I’ll have her in my arms again? It makes no sense, and that’s the reason I won’t share my feelings about it with anyone. They’ll just laugh at me for loving her so much. When I close my eyes we’re together. She’s running through a field of tall grasses, while beams of sun are shining down, highlighting her brown wavy hair. The smile on her face makes me beam, and I stand there, arms open, waiting to catch her when she comes into my reach. I want to lay there in that field with her until the sun sets, and even after. It’s no longer about making love. In that moment I know she’s mine, and nothing can tear us apart again.
I just wish I could talk to her. I want to tell her that I miss her. I need to know she’s okay.
I need to know she’s still alive.

Get the beginning of the story with Love Survives
My heart belonged to Branch and Brooks Valentine since we were children, when we were all too naïve to know what that even meant. We didn’t understand that when we became adults, love would change us. I had to make a choice and when I did, it ripped our bond apart. Brooks left town, and he took half of my heart with him. It was difficult, but I coped and planned my future with Branch. I thought I’d made the right decision. I loved him and I always had.
Brooks showed up to be our best man the night before our nuptials. After drinks and too much reminiscing, I ended up in bed with the wrong brother. To avoid the humiliation and the fact that I’d ruined all of our lives, I left Branch and the only family I’d ever known.
That’s where my story should have ended.
Two years, one beautiful little girl and an abusive marriage later, I was standing there staring at the man that would always hold my heart.
The only question was…
Would I give it to him
I’m Katy Michaels and this is my story.

Synopsis

Stay focused. Get a job. Save her father’s life.

Beth Lamont knows far too much about the harsh realities of life her gilded classmates have only read about in class. She’ll do whatever it takes to take care of her father, even if that means tutoring a guy like Noah – a guy who represents everything she hates about the war, soldiers and what the Army has done to her family.

Noah Warren doesn’t know how to be a student. All he knows is war. But he’s going to college now to fulfill a promise and he doesn’t break his promises. Except he doesn’t count on his tutor being drop dead gorgeous and distracting as hell. One look at Beth threatens to unravel the careful lies Noah has constructed around him.

A simple arrangement turns into something neither of them can deny. And a war that neither of them can forget could destroy them both.

Chapter One

Beth

My dad has good days and bad. The good days are awesome. When he’s awake and he’s pretending to cook and I’m pretending to eat it. It’s a joke between us that he burns water. But that’s okay.

On the good days, I humor him. Because for those brief interludes, I have my dad back.

The not so good days, like today, are more common. Days when he can’t get out of bed without my help.

I bring him his medication. I know exactly how much he takes and how often.

And I know exactly when he runs out.

I’ve gotten better at keeping up with his appointments so he doesn’t, but the faceless bastards at the VA cancel more than they keep. But what can we do? He can’t get private insurance with his health, and because someone decided that his back injury wasn’t entirely service-related, he doesn’t have a high enough disability rating to qualify for automatic care. So we wait for them to fit him in and when we can’t, we go to the emergency room and the bills pile up. Because despite him not being able to move on the bad days, his back pain treatments are elective.

So I juggle phone calls to the docs and try to keep us above water.

Bastards.

I leave his phone by his bed and make sure it’s plugged in to charge before I head to school. He’s got water and the pills he’ll need when he finally comes out of the fog. Our tiny house is only a mile from campus. Not in the best part of town but not the worst either. I’ve got an hour before class, which means I need to hustle. Thankfully, it’s not terribly hot today so I won’t arrive on campus a sweating, soggy mess. That always makes a good impression, especially at a wealthy southern school like this one.

I make it to campus with twenty minutes to spare and check my e-mail on the campus WiFi. I can’t check it at the house – Internet is a luxury we can’t afford. If I’m lucky, my neighbor’s signal sometimes bleeds over into our house. Most of the time, though, I’m not that lucky. Which is fine. Except for days like this where there’s a note from my professor asking me to come by her office before class.

Professor Blake is terrifying to those who don’t know her. She’s so damn smart it’s scary, and she doesn’t let any of us get away with not speaking up in class. Sit up straight. Speak loudly. She’s harder on the girls, too. Some of the underclassmen complain that she’s being unfair. I don’t complain, though. I know she’s doing it for a reason.

“You got my note just in time,” she says. Her tortoise-shell glasses reflect the fluorescent light, and I can’t see her eyes.

“Yes, ma’am.” She’s told me not to call her ma’am, but it slips out anyway. I can’t help it. Thankfully, she doesn’t push the issue.

“I have a job for you.”

“Sure.” A job means extra money on the side. Money that I can use to get my dad his medications. Or, you know, buy food. Little things. It’s hard as hell to do stats when your stomach is rumbling. “What does it entail?”

“Tutoring. Business statistics.”

“I hear a but in there.”

“He’s a former soldier.”

Once, when my mom first left us, I couldn’t wake my dad up. My blood pounded so loud in my ears that I could hardly hear. That’s how I feel now. My mouth is open, but no sound crosses my lips. Professor Blake knows how I feel about the war, about soldiers. I can’t deal with all the hoah chest-beating bullshit. Not with my dad and everything the war has done to him.

“Before you say no, hear me out. Noah has some very well-placed friends that want him very much to succeed here. He’s got a ticket into the business school graduate program, but only if he gets through Stats.”

I’m having a hard time breathing. I can’t do this. Just thinking about what the war has done to my dad makes it difficult to breathe. But the idea of extra money, just a little, is a strong motivator when you don’t have it. Principles are for people who can afford them.

I take a deep, cleansing breath. “So why me?”

“Because you’ve got the best head for stats I’ve seen in a long time, and I’ve seen you explain things to the underclassmen in ways that make sense to them. You can translate.”

“There’s no one else?” I hate that I need this job.

Professor Blake removes her glasses with a quiet sigh. “Our school is very pro-military, Beth. And I would consider it a personal favor if you’d help him.”

She’s right. That’s the only reason I was able to get in. This is one of the Southern Ivies. A top school in the southeast that I have no business being at except for my dad, who knew the dean of the law school from his time in the army. I hate the war and everything it’s done to my family. But I wouldn’t be where I am today if my dad hadn’t gone to war and sacrificed everything to make sure I had a future outside of our crappy little place outside of Fort Benning. There are things worse than death and my dad lives with them every day because he had done what he had to do to provide for me.

I will not let him down.

“Okay. When do I start?”

She hands me a slip of paper. It’s yellow and has her letterhead at the top in neat, formal block letters. “Here’s his information. Make contact and see what his schedule is.” She places her glasses back on and just like that, I’m dismissed.

Professor Blake is not a warm woman, but I wouldn’t have made it through my first semester at this school without her mentorship. If not for her and my friend Abby, I would have left from the sheer overwhelming force of being surrounded by money and wealth and all the intangibles that came along with it. I did not belong here, but because of Professor Blake, I hadn’t quit.

So if I need to tutor some blockhead soldier to repay her kindness, then so be it. Graduating from this program is my one chance to take care of my dad and I will not fail.

5StarMichel’s Review

Before I Fall by Jessica Scott is the first book in the Falling Series.  It is quite different from the past books by Jessica Scott.  It is her first New Adult book.  The new series is focused on college students in civilian life after they have served in the ARMY.  It is an interesting combination that brings two different kinds of worlds together.  Jessica Scott did an amazing job of bringing these worlds together and setting up the series.  Not only did the reader get to experience a quality New Adult romance, they were also introduced to other characters that will be in future stories.  She built a world where veterans, newly released from the military, are trying to build a new life in the civilian world.  They are dealing with their past experiences in the military, trying to acclimate to college life, and facing their new futures.  These students are not your average coed nor will they ever be.  The first book, Before I Fall was an outstanding debut in this series.

Noah Warren has enrolled in the business program after serving five years in the military.  He was injured in his last tour of duty which led to his release.  He is trying to rebuild his life and make a future for himself.  It is a big adjustment to civilian life.  He doesn’t feel like he fits in with the college way of life after the experiences he had in the ARMY.  To top it off, he is suffering from PTSD and pain from his injuries.  He is trying to take one day at time.  He is trying to make the most of his opportunity for a college education.  His one road block is Statistics.  He needs a tutor to help him pass the class.  Acquiring a tutor is how he meets Beth Lemont.

Beth Lemont has her hands full.  She is attending college, working full-time, taking care of her father, and tutoring to make ends meet.  She doesn’t have time for a social life or the coed life.  Forget dating.  Her father was injured while serving in the military.  His injuries have caused chronic pain and suffering.  His condition is worse.  Now that he is a civilian, he no longer falls completely under the military umbrella of benefits.  The treatments for his condition are questionable according the VA.  He has had too many run arounds, cancellations, and different treatments.  The results are the same and his condition keeps getting worse.  As his health benefits are declined or postponed, he is forced to self medicate.  Beth is struggling to take care of her father, manage his doctor appointments, manage his health care benefits, and make enough money to keep them going as well as paying for his medications. It is a no win situation.  When she picks up a tutoring job she meets Noah Warren.  He is different from the usual college guys she meets.  He understands the difficulties in her personal life.  He touches something deep in her soul and makes her want a normal relationship like most girls her age have.

These two seem to be perfect for one another.  They get along great, they have sexual chemistry, and their lives have been affected by the military.  Can these two come together and build a normal kind of life?

Just when things are looking positive for their relationship, their lives will spiral out of control.  Beth’s father takes a turn for the worse. Beth will be forced to make decisions that a young woman should not make.  Noah’s PTSD will roar it’s ugly head and he will have to face some ugly truths about himself.  These truths are not something any woman should have to deal with.

Is there a future for Beth and Noah?  Read Before I Fall by Jessica Scott.

Tracey’s Review

Holy hot cliffhanger, book lovers! After reading Controlling Her Pleasure by Lili Valente, I could not WAIT to get my hands on Commanding Her Trust, the second book in Lili’s Under His Command series. Let me tell you, this book did not disappoint. Talk about off-the-charts hot, this book absolutely scorches. Every single scene is alive with the passion that Blake and Erin have for each other.

Blake and Erin have moved forward in this book. Although their desire for each other is always simmering just below each interaction, each of them knows that their relationship cannot move forward without inspiring trust in the other. If they are to get past the events that have brought them to Blake’s remote cabin, they have to start being honest with each other. But when Blake takes his role as Dom to a level that has Erin retreating, it’s going to take a lot more than passion and the love that hasn’t gotten any less powerful to make a go of it.

I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what Lili has in store for Blake and Erin. Claiming Her Heart (Book 3) can’t get here quickly enough, but, in the meantime, another 5+ smoldery stars for Commanding Her Trust.

Excerpt

Shiori moved to his other ear. One hand gripped his hair while

the other clamped onto his ass cheek. “The other choice is you on

your knees with that pouty mouth all over my pussy.”

“Look at me,” she said softly.

His lust-clouded

eyes met hers.

“Make me come so hard my knees give out. Then pick me up

and do it again.”

“A man like you?”

“A man who finds beauty in a woman secondary to her strength.

You have both in equal measure. So you tempt me beyond anything

I’ve ever experienced.”

“I changed my mind. I don’t give a damn about your sexual

past when you’re responding to my touch so beautifully.” She blew

in his ear. “A cliché for sure, but your body is my wonderland.”.

Shiori’s palms smoothed over his cheeks, and she tipped his

head back to look at him. “You did well.”

“It was all for you.”

“Now it’s your turn.” She brushed her lips across his. “Ask me.”

“Please, Nushi, let me come.”

“Come for me now.”

I’ve never craved a woman like I do you.” He groaned

and briefly closed his eyes. “I’m sitting here on my knees, my ass

stinging, knowing I’ve got more punishment in store, and my dick

is getting hard just imagining being with you again.”

The man worshipped her body with every caress, every

kiss, every stuttered breath. And yet he gave her total control. He

didn’t rock his hips or thrust up into her. He let her fuck him. That

surrender made this connection all the more powerful.

Warm lips trailed down her spine, and strong hands dug into

her hips. “One of these days I’m gonna map every muscle in your

back with my mouth. You’re so strong, and that is so fucking sexy.”

Lightning fast she wrapped her hand beneath his jaw and jerked

his face up. “Taking care of you is my responsibility, Knox. That

includes commanding you to get turned on, getting you off, cleaning

you up, and making sure you don’t do something stupid in the

aftermath.”

“Come into my lair, my sweet,” she murmured

against his lips, “and we’ll have us some kinky fun.”

You are alive and here with me, and

there’s no way I’ll ever be able to let you go. Not because you’re my

Mistress, but because you’re the woman I love. The woman I’ve

waited for my entire life.”

Shiori trapped his face in her hands and kissed him. “I didn’t

think I could love you more than I already do, but I was wrong.”

Another kiss. “Please get off your knees and hold me.”

6+Michel’s Review

The Mastered Series by Lorelei James is sensational! The latest release, Unraveled, blew me away. This book was emotional, raw, gritty, and very complex. It had an intense love story that was very realistic. The push and pull of their relationship in and out of the bedroom kept the reader glued to the pages. Their story is more than your typical BDSM romance. It was a story of pure passion. Both Shiori and Knox were learning more about themselves as individuals, as sexual partners, as lovers, as professionals, and social status. They were learning to satisfy their needs, feed their desires, and how to succeed in a romantic relationship.

I have read many BDSM books, long before Fifty Shades of Grey hit the scene. I have found that this romance theme borders the line with a love/ hate reactions. Most of these themed type of books have one extremely strong character and one character that appears to be strong but can be easily manipulated. I have read some that come across as harsh and somewhat abusive. Others I have read I found  to only dabble in the BDSM world.

The one thing should be clear in all of these books based upon this romantic theme is the roles in the relationship. The dominant may be the one that controls the relationship, but it is with permission from the submissive. It is their responsibility to fulfill their needs, satisfy their desires, reward with their directives, and physically care for them at all times. They are responsible for reading their submissive’s feelings and reactions at all times. They have been given a great deal of power and trust. The submissive is the one that truly holds the power. They are the ones that are surrendering their trust and lack of power. They are the ones that can stop the exchange at any time, no matter how the dominant is feeling. They are the ones that are strong enough to let go of complete control and step outside of their ego.

As in most of the books, the female takes the submissive role and the male takes the dominant role. After all most romance readers want an Alpha male as the leading man in the story. It is unusual for the male to be the submissive. In most of the books with the male being the sub, it failed i epic proportions. The man appeared to be weak and wishy -washy outside of the bedroom. He didn’t have the backbone that was needed to be convincing in a romantic relationship. Lorelei James took a huge risk making her leading man a submissive and her leading lady a dominatrix. Knox was a pure alpha male that was strong willed, extremely protective, and in control at all times. Shiori is a strong, smart woman that grew up in a powerful world where strength of character is the most important value one can possess. She did not come across as an emotional female with power issues. She did not have gender issues.

Unraveling was exactly as the title implied. Both Knox and Shiori are at crossroads in their lives. When they first met, they seemed to but heads. It was more than their rankings within the Dojo that spurred their hostilities. It was the sense of change, the intrigue of something forbidden, and the overwhelming attraction to one another. When they finally come together it is explosive. They are both learning to open their hearts. They are learning new things about themselves that makes them stronger. They are learning that there is more than a sub and dom relationship at hand. They are learning that a real relationship is give and take. It is about learning when to let go and when to hang on. One is not stronger than the other. The true strength lies in being together.

This series is more than a Dojo full of characters with kinky preferences. The dynamics of this Dojo world intermixing with the  MMA fighting world moves this series along. The relationships among all the characters makes their world a family. This family is larger than life and captures the reader’s heart.

Lorelei James wrote a powerful story with complex characters. Both of these characters stood out and were easy to embrace. Their relationship in the bedroom and outside of the bedroom was explosive. Their story was anything but predictable. The surprises that came at the end shook the series world without leaving it with a cliffhanger. It left the reader eager for the next book. Deacon has a story and a place in the Mastered world.

Unraveled truly earned a six star rating. It is my favorite release in the Mastered Series, It has become a 2015 Favorite.

Excerpt

There he was again. That same cowboy I’d seen on the drive into town, still walking, still carrying a big green duffel bag on one shoulder and a saddle slung over the other. He’d been traveling in the opposite direction and hadn’t bothered to look up as I’d passed him earlier. I’d barely glimpsed his face then, but I saw it quite clearly now. A glance over his shoulder revealed his bleak, exhausted expression. He might have been near the point of collapse, but he obviously wasn’t prepared to admit defeat.

Not yet, anyway.

I couldn’t believe no one had picked him up in the three hours since I’d last seen him. He hadn’t looked very fresh even then. I had no idea where he was headed, but in the middle of Wyoming, there wasn’t much within walking distance, no matter where you were going.

He turned toward me, sticking out a halfhearted thumb as I came closer, his face streaked with dirt and sweat and what might have been tears. A black Stetson shadowed his eyes, and his boots and jeans were dusty and worn. His sweat-soaked denim shirt clung to his chest, unbuttoned halfway to his waist, the sleeves ripped out. He probably wasn’t trying to look cool, even though he did. No, he was likely trying to get cool, in any way he possibly could. My truck was air-conditioned and comfortable, and there was plenty of room for him and his meager belongings. I could no more have left him there than I could have ignored a starving child.

As I pulled over to stop, his eyes closed and his lips moved as though uttering a prayer of thanks. His knees buckled slightly, and for a moment, I thought he truly would collapse. Instead, he took a deep breath and stood up straight. Lifting his chin, he aimed luminous blue eyes at me and flashed a dazzling smile. His silver belt buckle suggested this man was no ordinary ranch hand but a down-on-his-luck rodeo cowboy who, unless I missed my guess, was heading for Jackson Hole.

A real heartbreaker of a rodeo cowboy, too. Up close, he was even more handsome than he’d been from a distance. Long and lean with tanned, muscular arms, dimples creased his cheeks and black hair curled enticingly from the open edges of his shirt. Several days’ growth of dark beard surrounded full, sensuous lips, darkening a jaw that my fingertips ached to caress. More ebony curls peeked from beneath his hat, making me long to yank off that Stetson to discover what else it was hiding. Oh yes, there was enough gorgeous cowboy to sway a much stronger woman than I ever claimed to be. Tears stung my eyes as something in his expression reminded me of Cody.

My dear, sweet Cody… He’d been gone for two years now, but I hadn’t forgotten that look, and I doubted I ever would.

Determined to mask my roiling emotions, I searched for something amusing to say as I rolled down my window. “Lost your horse?”

My clever tongue was rewarded with another heart-stopping smile. Cody used to say funny things just to make me giggle—which wasn’t difficult since I tend to find humor in nearly any situation—but brushing up on my own repertoire of one-liners to keep this guy smiling seemed like an excellent idea.

His grin was sheepish as he tipped up the brim of his hat. “He sort of drove off without me.”

“Drove off?” I scoffed. “Somehow I doubt that. Seems like he would’ve needed help.”

My handsome cowboy gave me a grim nod. “Oh, he had help all right. My girlfriend dumped me on the highway and took off with the truck, the trailer, and the horse—all of which were actually hers, by the way. She was kind enough to leave me my saddle and my clothes, although a cell phone would’ve been nice.”

I shook my head. “Nice, yes. Helpful, no. They don’t work very well around here. Which kinda makes me mad—I mean, where would you need a phone more than if you were stranded out in the middle of nowhere?”

He glanced around at the vast expanse of sunbaked rangeland. “Is that the name of this place? Nowhere?”

“Sure is.” I couldn’t help giggling. “Want to get out of nowhere?”

“Yes, please,” he replied. “And as quickly as possible.”

“Throw your stuff in the back and hop in,” I said. “We’ll leave nowhere and go…somewhere.”

He did as I suggested, and suddenly the interior of my truck was filled with the pungent aroma of hot, sweaty, dusty—but cologned—cowboy. He’d most likely showered that morning, but it had been one helluva day. The forecast called for the upper nineties—quite a heat wave even for mid-August—and though the humidity was low, some temperatures are best avoided no matter how dry the air.

“You’re a lifesaver,” he said. “I thought that sun was gonna roast me alive.”

“As hot as it gets in these parts, I never go anywhere without water, enough food for a couple of meals, and an umbrella in case I’m ever forced to hike. Want a sandwich?”

“You bet.”

I tossed a nod over my shoulder. “The cooler’s on the backseat. Help yourself. There’s plenty of water.” Although, at that point, a cold beer probably would have been his first choice.

He pulled out two bottles of water and a sandwich, downing the first bottle in three swallows.

“Better now?”

“Much.”

“Let’s see now…” I said as he unwrapped the sandwich. “A cowboy dumped in the middle of nowhere with a saddle and no horse. There’s got to be a country song in that.”

“If you mean a song about a guy bein’ picked up by a girl in a flatbed Ford, I think the Eagles already did that one.”

“I love that song,” I said wistfully. “Guess I always wanted to be that girl.”

“Well, now you are.” He took a bite of the sandwich, chewing it quickly. “How does it feel?”

“Not much different.” This wasn’t entirely true. I wasn’t in the habit of picking up gorgeous cowboys—and this particular cowboy’s presence had me feeling strangely excited. Oh yes, I was very aware of him, and if my brain hadn’t noticed him, my erogenous zones were there to remind me. “For one thing, this isn’t a flatbed Ford, and I’m not what anyone would call a girl anymore.”

He paused in mid-bite. “Why? Have you had a sex-change operation?”

“Nope,” I replied with another giggle. “You can’t call a forty-two-year-old a girl. Well, maybe you could if you happened to be eighty-two yourself, but I’m pretty sure I outgrew the girl category a long time ago—about the time that song was popular.”

Despite the fact that I never once took my eyes off the road, I was aware of his prolonged scrutiny—an assessing gaze that left delightful tingles in its wake.

“Some things improve with age.” He turned toward the window. “You don’t seem like the type to dump a guy in the middle of nowhere.”

Having heard the catch in his voice, I did my best to keep my tone light. Bursting into tears in front of a perfect stranger probably wasn’t on his bucket list. “True—unless he was really obnoxious.”

This particular cowboy would have to have been homicidal or, at the very least, abusive for me to throw him out. He was the most adorable cowboy I’d ever laid eyes on, including the one I’d married.

“I wasn’t being obnoxious.” He fairly bristled with indignation, which seemed to have won out over heartbreak. “I was asleep. I thought she was stopping for gas when I felt the truck slow down. She asked me to take a look at the tires on the trailer, said she thought one had gone flat. While I was checking the tires, she dumped my saddle and duffel bag on the side of the road and drove off. I found this tucked into the saddle.” Reaching into his shirt pocket, he handed me a torn, sweat-soaked scrap of paper.

It’s not working out. Sorry.

“Ouch,” I said with a sympathetic wince. “That’s pretty hard.”

“Yeah.” With an absent nod, he stuffed the note back into his pocket. “I don’t even know what I did wrong. Don’t guess I ever will.”

He seemed nice enough, and he certainly wasn’t ugly. Maybe his girl had breakup issues. As irresistible as he was, I couldn’t imagine breaking his heart while gazing into those eyes of his, and I didn’t even know his name.

She’d probably gone about it the best way possible—a quick, clean break before losing her nerve completely. One glance, one smile, and she’d have forgotten why their relationship wasn’t working. I wasn’t looking forward to dropping him off at the crossroad to the ranch, myself. I had a sudden, overwhelming urge to take him home and wash him, feed him, and tuck him into bed—my bed, to be precise.

I had my doubts about that part. He couldn’t have been more than thirty, and young men generally didn’t seek solace from older women—not that kind of solace, anyway. Consoling him seemed impossible, so I changed the subject.

“Where were you headed?”

“The rodeo in Jackson Hole,” he replied. “I’m a rodeo cowboy.”

“No shit,” I drawled. “I’d never have guessed that. I don’t suppose your girl left you with any money, did she? I mean, I’m not going to charge you for the ride or the lunch, but I’m not going all the way to Jackson Hole, either.”

“I didn’t figure you were.” His downcast expression suggested his hope that he’d been wrong about that. “But at the time, I didn’t really care.”

“Neither did I. I wouldn’t have left you there no matter where you were going. It was…well, let’s just say it was something I couldn’t bring myself to do.”

“Pick up lots of strays, do you?” Turning sideways, he leaned back against the door, a move that not only drew my eye, but also gave me a full-frontal view that made my breath catch in my throat. Oh yes, I’d taken in lots of strays, but none that were anywhere near as attractive.

I shook my head. “Actually picking them up usually isn’t necessary. They all seem to know where I live.”

“If you don’t mind my asking, where do you live? I mean, are we close?”

Obviously, he hoped I lived somewhere near Jackson Hole. I hated to disappoint him. “It’s about another twenty miles—most of which are not on the main highway. I’ll let you out at the turnoff, if that’s okay with you.”

His face fell, but he nodded, apparently resigned to the fact that this ride wasn’t going to be more than a brief respite. “Not much choice, is there?” He gave a fatalistic shrug. “I don’t have enough money on me to pay you to take me to Jackson Hole. I really should pay you for what you’ve already done.”

I caught myself wishing that he did have enough money—or that he would ask me to run off with him and follow the rodeo circuit, never going home at all. I would have loved to throw caution to the wind and do just that, but I had too many responsibilities. Not only did I have a ranch to run, but I also had my father and my kids to look after.

No, scratch that. Chris and Will were both in college. I had a hard time remembering that except when confronted with the sight of their empty rooms as I passed by them every day. Out on the highway I could pretend they were both there at home waiting for me—and Cody, too.

No, regardless of how much money this man might offer to pay me, I couldn’t shirk my duties and simply up and disappear. Nor would I accept his money. He obviously needed to hold on to what little he had stashed in those jeans.

“I couldn’t possibly take money from you,” I protested. “I wouldn’t be much of a Good Samaritan if I did, would I?”

“I suppose not.”

He shrugged again and we drove on in silence. Remaining slouched against the door, he draped his left arm across the headrest and bent up one knee, stretching his legs apart enough that my eyes were continually landing on that section of blue jeans due south of that big, silver belt buckle. From time to time he shifted his hips as though my glances made him uncomfortable, and while I did try to keep my eyes on the road, every once in a while they would stray back to him—and that enticing bulge in his jeans…

“What would it take to get you to drive me all the way to Jackson Hole?” The hint of suggestion in his voice startled me almost as much as the abrupt nature of his query.

Suddenly, my mouth was as dry as a gulch. Reaching for my bottle of water, I took a sip and stole another peek at him. Those luminous eyes peered at me from beneath lids that were heavy with sensuous intent.

His lips curled into a provocative smile. “I’d be willing to bet there’s something I could do for you that would pay you back—or at least make it worth your while.”

Michel’s Review

Cowboy Heaven by Cheryl Brooks is the perfect book if you are looking for a fun, extremely erotic, humorous, and entertaining. The title is perfect for the book.  The sexy cowboys are coming out of the woodwork and showing their riding abilities.  A fantasy come true?

When middle aged Angela McClure picks up a gorgeous hitchhiking cowboy the fun begins.  Her fantasies take over.  When she takes him home to the ranch it triggers a stampede.  All the ranch hands and cowboys that were oblivious to Angela are now paying attention.  But it’s the sexy young one, cowboy Troy, that has hers until Dusty Jackson makes his move.

The fantasies have began to jump out of her head and into her bed. Let the fun begin.

Cowboy Heaven was sizzling hot.  The sex scenes were hotter than a branding iron.  The story itself was not deep, not overly romantic, and overly emotional.  It was just good reading entertainment.

The one impression this book left me with was how our inner feelings about ourselves reflect what people are seeing on the outside.  Angela was feeling like an undesirable middle aged woman without much hope in the romance department.  Once the young cowboy Troy paid attention and made her feel desirable once again, her inner beauty began to shine.  When she began to shine, others took notice.

Sam

Security had better not have let one of those asshole journalists from downstairs up to my floor. I swear, those soul suckers would do anything to get a new detail to add to their nothing stories. I open the door without removing the chain and feel as if I’ve been punched in the gut when I see the woman on the other side.

Liz is worrying her lower lip between her teeth and watching down the hall. Is she looking for Sabrina or trying to make sure no one sees her coming to my room? My insides twist at the sight of her—an internal tug-of-war between conflicting emotions. I want to pull her into my room and kiss her until she can’t see straight, touch her until she promises never to leave me again, and at the same time, I want to demand that she go back to her room because having her close makes me hope for things I can’t have.

I remove the chain and tug her inside by the arm before closing the door behind her.

“No one saw me,” she says, her eyes locked on the floor. “I made sure.”

I saw you,” I growl. It’s painful to be this close—to breathe her air, to smell her perfume. I never knew how much it could hurt to want and be denied.

She swallows and avoids my eyes. “Is she here?”

“What do you want, Liz?”

She lifts her head and stares at me. “Is she here?”

“Sabrina’s on her way to meet her mom in South Dakota for a campaign stop.”

Her gaze dips to my bare chest and back up. “I’m surprised they didn’t ask you to go with them.”

“They did. I declined.” I sound like a fucking dickhead, and I make myself take two steps back so I don’t do something equally dickish. Like kiss her until she melts in my arms and forgets about the other guy, until we both forget that this is hopeless.

“I’m sorry that video was leaked. You didn’t deserve that invasion of your privacy.”

She has red lipstick on, and it matches her shoes. Ever since I saw her tonight, I’ve been picturing her on her knees in nothing but those shoes, those red lips stretched around my cock. I can’t help myself, and I skim my thumb over her bottom lip.

The second I touch her, she draws in a ragged breath. “You came to my apartment yesterday.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

I trail my thumb down her neck and over the red strap of her dress. “Probably for the same reason you came here tonight.”

“To talk about Sabrina?”

“You knocked on my door in the middle of the night to talk about Sabrina?” I follow the strap down and graze my fingers across her cleavage. “Is this about her, or is it about you and me?”

“There is no you and me,” she says. “We both know that.”

“There’s so much you and me, there’s no air left when we share a room. There’s always you and me.”

“Even when you’re making sex tapes with someone else?”

“And even when you’re keeping warm in another man’s arms.”

About the Author

Once a college English professor, I now write full time. I live in rural Indiana, where, when I’m not writing, I get to hang out with my husband and two kids–a six-year-old boy and

a two-year-old hellion, er, girl. Not surprisingly, reading and writing remain my favorite activities, though both come in bits and pieces these days, not the big hunks of time I en- joyed before I had children. When I’m feeling virtuous, I like to go running (I use that word liberally. I’m really, really slow) or do yoga. Don’t worry, I’m always careful to balance out such activities with a hearty serving of ice cream or a chocolate martini.

Prologue

Max

Well, well, well. What do we have here?

I spotted a woman standing in front of her car a few spots from mine in the parking lot. Her head in her hands, she stared at the front of her vehicle. I just finished my meeting and really wanted to go back home, but I couldn’t leave a woman stranded in the heat.

Not with a clear conscience.

And not with an ass like that.

“Somethin’ wrong?” I asked, shutting my truck door behind me and walking slowly towards the brunette.

She turned her head and a smile slowly spread across her pretty face. She stood, wiping her hands down the sides of her green workout shorts. Her body was lean and tight and I wanted to run my hands all over it.

She was little as hell, probably a good foot shorter than my 6’2” frame. Her tight white tank top showcased her breasts in the best way possible. Her hair was piled on top of her head, strands sticking to the back of her neck.

Her smile grew wider as I made my way across the parking lot. Sweat dotted her smooth, tanned skin and she wiped her brow with the back of one hand.

The beauty raised her eyebrows, her green eyes lighting up. “My car won’t start.” She ran her gaze down my body, making little effort to conceal the fact that she liked what she saw.

That makes two of us.

I flashed her a smile and cleared my throat. I needed to focus, but that was easier said than done. The last thing I wanted to do was come across like Cane, my friend with no couth.

“What seems to be the problem?” I unlatched the hood and raised it open.

“I turned the key and got nothing but a buzzing sound,” she huffed, crossing her arms in front of her.

I looked up, the movement catching my attention, and my gaze landed right on her chest.

“What are you looking at?” she asked cheekily.

“Nothin’ you shouldn’t be proud of.” I blew out a breath and laughed.

She giggled and I immediately wanted to hear it again. I wanted to make her giggle, to see that smile, over and over.

Trying to put some distance between us, I made my way to the side of the car. I felt her eyes on me, the smell of her coconut perfume messing with my mind. I needed to focus on the task at hand and not on the thing I wanted to be handling.

Damn, I’d love to handle that little body.

I checked the battery and saw the problem right away. I tightened the loose cable and checked the other before standing back up. I leaned against the car and folded my hands in front of me. I had to figure out how to play this to my advantage. My mind raced through possibilities and I shot her a serious look.

“This is just my luck,” she said, reading way too much into my expression. “And I thought this week couldn’t get any worse.”

“Wanna talk about it?” I grinned, watching her cute-as-hell act. I didn’t know what her week had been like, but I knew I was more than willing to take her mind off of it for a couple of hours.

“So you’re a mechanic and a counselor?”

“I can be whatever you want me to be.”

Her mouth twisted in amusement, her eyes lighting up. “Is that so? You’re a jack-of-all trades then, Mr.—”

“I’m Max Quinn, the man that can service any and all of your needs.”

She laughed, her cheeks blushing. “Okay, Max. The first need I have is getting this car running.”

“The first need, huh? Does that imply that there may be more needs that require my services?”

She pressed her lips together, obviously enjoying the innuendos. “It’s a possibility. You know how things go—you take care of one thing and then suddenly something else, you know, pops up.”

“Pops up? Interesting choice of words…”

She laughed again, tossing her head back. Drops of sweat rolled down her neck and it took everything I had to not leap across the car, throw her over my shoulder, and into the back of my truck. I could imagine that little body wrapped around mine, that giggle piercing the air as I had my way with her.

“If I can get this car running, and that’s a big ‘if’, what do you think is a fair price for my time and effort?”

I figured I’d give her a chance to either play along or opt out. As much as I’d like to get to know this little beauty, I wasn’t going to press myself. It wasn’t my style.

“I’m not sure,” she smiled. “What are you thinking?”

“Well, I don’t really have anything else to do today. But it could take hours.”

“Really?” She looked alarmed. “I don’t want you—”

“It might take minutes,” I cut her off, shrugging.

She tossed me a flirty smile, one hand on her narrow hip. “Are you sure you’re up for the challenge?”

“Ah, sweetheart. You have no idea.”

Biting her bottom lip, her eyes sparkling, she ran a hand down the side of her neck. She knew exactly what she was doing to me. “Fair enough. What’s it going to cost me?”

“It’s going to cost you two things.” I tapped my fingers against the hood of the car and waited for her response.

“Two things?” She sighed dramatically, rolling her eyes for effect. “Well, my options seem pretty limited, so let’s hear it.”

“The first thing is your name. Only seems fair that I know whose car I’m fixin’.”

The gorgeous girl in front of me cocked her head to the side. She was smarter than I gave her credit for. I knew she was attracted to me and I knew she’d give me her name, but she was smart enough to consider it first.

“Kari Stanley,” she said finally.

“Alright, Kari Stanley. The second thing you need to do before I fix your car is say yes.”

“Say yes?”

“Say yes to having dinner with me tonight. I think that’s totally fair. If I get this fixed, the least you can do is share a meal with me.”

She pretended to consider my proposal, her tongue darting out to lick her bottom lip.

“How do I know you’re not a serial killer?” she asked playfully.

I grinned mischievously. “I never said I didn’t bite.”

Her jaw dropped. She started to speak but nothing came out but another laugh.

“But I promise you’d like it if I did.” I narrowed my eyes, fighting the grin on my face, too.

She looked shocked for a split second and then regained her composure, trying to play it cool. “Okay. If you can get this started, I’ll go to dinner with you. But I have to say—I’m a little disappointed in your creativity. For some reason, I expected you to want more than a meal.”

I tossed her the keys and a wink. “Don’t be. You don’t know what all dinner entails.”

She caught her key ring with a grin. “Fair enough.”

“It’ll be better than fair, I promise. Now quit wastin’ time and use those,” I said, nodding to the keys in the palm of her hand.

“What do you want me to do with them?”

“I want you to start the car.”

She stared at me blankly. “What part of ‘this car doesn’t start’ don’t you understand?”

“What part of ‘start the damn car’ don’t you understand?”

She eyed me curiously before climbing into the driver’s seat. A look of disbelief crossed her face as the engine roared to life. “What the…”

I shut the hood of her car.

“Meet me at Maisano’s on Scottsdale Road at six, sweetheart.”

“Wait. How did you…”

I laughed, starting towards my truck. “Maisano’s at six—be there.”

Tracey’s Review

Max Quinn is many things. Smart, loyal, honorable, a family man, and absolutely head over heels in love with Kari Stanley, Max will do whatever he has to to let Kari know how much she means to him. Kari is broken yet resilient, capable of standing on her own, but fearful of losing Max if he should find out the secrets that she is hiding.

After meeting Max and Kari in THE EXCEPTION by Adriana Locke, I was thrilled that they would be getting their own story in THE PERCEPTION. Let me tell you, it was well worth the wait, because Adriana has delivered in a big way. Max is the whole package. He’s super-swoony, sweet, loves his mama, and is hot and sexy to boot. He’s found the woman of his dreams in Kari, but is beginning to wonder what it will take to make her realize that he’s in their relationship for keeps. I love the way that Adriana has written Kari. She has dealt with some serious loss, but is living her life in spite of it. My only wish is that she had seen earlier just how very deserving she is of having a life with Max.

THE PERCEPTION had me from the first page, the kind of book that I just didn’t want to put down. There was intrigue, drama, lots and lots of feels, and good old sexy time, and it made for a really great read. Seeing Jada and Cane again was like visiting old friends, and Adriana did a wonderful job of fleshing out all the characters so that they became even more real, and their stories resonated even more. Also, when I read a book, and get to know and love everyone in it, I enjoy seeing how things are once the story has ended, so having the epilogue to wrap things up really was the perfect way to leave things. Five sweet and sexy stars for Max and Kari and their Post-It notes; grab this one, you’ll love it.
