EXCERPT:

Maynemouth, Devonshire, 1890
Ten years later

Alexander,
Accept the invitation to Castle Redmayne.
I’m in danger. I need you.—Frank

Alexandra Lane had spent the entire train ride from Lon-
don to Devonshire meticulously pondering those fourteen
words for two separate reasons.

The first, she had been unable to stop fretting for Fran-
cesca, who tended to give more than the appropriate
amount of context. The terse, vague note Alexandra now
held was more of a warning than the message contained
therein. The second, she could no longer afford a first-class, pri-
vate railcar, and had, for the last several tense hours, been
forced to share her vestibule face-to-face with a rough-
featured, stocky man with shoulders made for labor.
Alone.

He’d attempted polite conversation at first, which she’d
rebuffed with equal civility by feigning interest in her cor-
respondence. By now, however, they were both painfully
aware she needn’t take four stops to read two letters.
It was terribly rude, she knew. Her carpetbag remained
clutched in her fist the entire time, except when her hand
would wander into its depths to palm the tiny pistol she
always carried. The sounds of the other passengers in ad-
joining vestibules didn’t make her feel safer, per se.
But she knew they would hear her scream, and that pro-
vided some relief.

For a woman who’d spent a great deal of the last ten
years in the company of men, she’d thought these painful
moments would have relented by now.

Alas, she’d become a mistress of manipulating a situa-
tion so, even if she had to endure the company of men
without a female companion, there would be more than
one man. In the circles she tended to frequent, people be-
haved when in company.

It had worked thus far.

Alexandra braced herself against the slowing of the
train, breathing a silent prayer of relief that they’d finally
arrived. She’d been terrified that if she’d glanced up once,
she’d be forced into conversation with her unwanted com-
panion.

Rain wept against the coach window, and the shadows
of the tears painted macabre little serpents on the conflict-
ing documents in her hands. One, a wedding invitation.
The other, Francesca’s alarming note.

A month past, she’d have wagered her entire inheritance
against Francesca Cavendish’s being the first of the Red
Rogues to capitulate to the bonds of matrimony.
A month past, she’d assumed she’d had an inheritance
to wager.

Their little society had seemed destined to live up to the
promise they’d once made as young, disenchanted girls to
never marry.

Until the invitation to an engagement masquerade—
given by the Duke of Redmayne—had arrived the same
day of her friend’s cryptic and startling note.

The invitation had been equally as ambiguous, stating
that the future duchess of Redmayne would be unveiled,
as it were, at the ball. Included in Alexandra’s particular
envelope was a request for her to attend as a bridesmaid.

The subsequent plea for help from Francesca—Frank—
had arrived in a tiny envelope with the Red Rogue seal
they’d commissioned some years prior.

Alexandra hadn’t even known Francesca had returned
from her romps about the Continent. Last she’d heard, the
countess had been in Morocco, doing reconnaissance of
some sort. Nothing in her letters had mentioned a suitor.
Not a serious one, in any case. Certainly not a duke.

Francesca had a talent for mischief and a tendency to
interpret danger as mere adventure.

So, what could possibly frighten her fearless friend?
Marriage, obviously, Alexandra thought with a smirk.
A risky venture, to be sure.

Tracey’s Review

I must admit, it’s been a minute since I’ve picked up anything even remotely resembling a historical romance. Visions of swashbuckling heroes, pert young ladies, and stories set in times of yore come to mind. And, yes, there is definitely some of that in this book. But there is also much more. Kerrigan Byrne manages to entertain and titillate, writing within the framework of the genre standard while still managing to create a story, place, and characters that are a breath of fresh air.

I knew that I was going to love the Red Rogues from the moment that I met them. Think Nancy Drew and her gang, but with touches of the lot from Dead Poets’ Society. Alexandra, Cecelia, and Francesca are no wilting lilies, but a series of unfortunate events casts a shadow over their young lives that they never quite outrun. In the meantime, though, our intrepid trio know their own minds and are not afraid to forge ahead, living life on their terms.

And, I have to tell you that, as historical romance heroes go, Piers Redmayne, is the deal. He is a man of passion, and his chief one becomes a certain Lady Alexandra Lane. By turn infuriated, intrigued, bewitched, and beleaguered, this Duke never even saw his lady coming. He is the sort of romantic hero that I can totally get behind, and seeing his sense of duty, self, and love get turned on its ear is everything.

This was my first read by Ms. Byrne, but will absolutely not be my last. HOW TO LOVE A DUKE IN TEN DAYS is a must-read for fans of historical romance with a twist. What twist? A woman who knows what she wants, and a man that will help her get it. Make sure this one’s on the ol’ TBR, and enjoy.

The first time I met Oliver Tanner he was five years old.
I was four.
That day he was entrusted to my keep.
He was as large and loud as a church mouse.
That day I taught him how fireflies were magic with the persistence of a person.
That’s what I loved about them.
No matter how far they strayed,
they remembered where they came from and who their family was.

After high school, he joined the army and left Knox Ridge.

Years later, the town had changed.
My dreams were shattered.
We had nothing left.
I had forgotten all about the magic of the fireflies.
Until he came back to town.
Everything about him was comforting.
He brought some light to my darkness,
But I knew the light could only last for so long.
Fireflies only stay for the summer.
He had outgrown our small town.
It was time for me to stop chasing fireflies.

Don’t miss out on this stunning, second-chance friends to lovers romance.

Excerpt

In the beginning, there were fireflies, crisp floating dots wading through the summer breeze.

There were children in the streets and popsicles being passed out by a local grandmother. There were skinned knees, too much sunscreen, and the wafting scent of freshly cut grass. There were long days and even longer nights.

Summers in Knox Ridge were just as much about mosquito nets and cicada songs as they were about lemonade and sunshine.

Knox Ridge wasn’t the biggest town in Georgia, but there were too many of us to learn each other’s names by heart. Most people grew up on the same street their parents did all those years ago.

They grew from a twinkle in their parents’ eyes into people who would one day take their places in the layout of our town. Their legacies casted shadows on every succeeding generation—what they’d do, where they lived, and who they loved. The town had a blueprint most didn’t question, but also didn’t consider too much.

Being a part of Knox Ridge was a privilege,” my Nana used to say.

It was a privilege to live around people who truly care for you and an honor to have a place like Knox Ridge to come home to.
“Every town on Earth says they’re the best,” Nana always said. “But how many towns can say ‘if you’re with us, we’ll accept every part of you?’”

Only Knox Ridge.
She swore that no one truly left Knox Ridge once they’d gotten a taste of living here, but some took breaks. She was right, some people drifted in and out of our sleepy town, but they always came back home. Even if they hadn’t realized they’d left.

I met Oliver Tanner one blistering afternoon in July.

He was five years old, moving back into the childhood home of his recently deceased father. I was four, sitting next door on my front porch with my best friend, Paige, munching on watermelon as we did nearly every afternoon.

Paige’s father had been my father’s best friend since childhood. Like I said, there was a blueprint to this town. Even Oliver with his ripped cargo shorts and dinosaur toys clenched tightly to his little chest. I had never seen anyone in that house. Not until they arrived.

“I never thought I’d live to see another Tanner live in that house,” my grandmother said.

I wouldn’t learn until years later the tumultuous history of the Tanner family in town. Once one of the most respected families of Knox Ridge, Oliver’s grandfather had left them disgraced and destitute three decades earlier when he ran off to California with a woman he barely knew. The Tanners had been on a downward spiral ever since.

“Well come on, sweeties,” my grandmother nudged Paige and myself. “Let’s go say hello. See if they need anything. That girl doesn’t look a day over twenty.”

Nana had been more or less right. Josey Tanner was twenty-five, freshly widowed, and out of money from living out west. Her only option was moving to this house she’d inherited from her husband’s passing and spread out his meager life insurance for as long as she could.

Nana introduced us to Oliver and his mother. Josey likewise introduced him to us.

“You got movers to help you with that truck?” Nana asked.

“No,” Josey said.

“Are you renting it by the hour or the day?”

“Day,” she answered. “I’ve got it rented for the whole week.”

Nana nodded before waving them both over. “No use doing anything now, then. Come over for some lemonade. My sons get off work at about five. They’ll wrangle up some friends to do it for you.”
That day was one of my first memories of Nana being Nana, pulling people together for the common good as she always did.

“Now you two be nice to the Tanner boy,” Nana told Paige and me. “He looks like he could use a bit of TLC.”

That day was also the day Ollie was entrusted to my keep. He was a year older than me, but back in those days, he was as large and loud as a church mouse. His sandy blonde hair stuck up in ways that defied gravity and he mostly muttered as we asked him about his dinosaurs.

We dragged him out back where all the magic happened, spending hours in the sun as the clouds and world passed us by. Our parents filtered in and out to keep an eye on us.

When the sun started to go down, and the fireflies started to peek out from their slumber, it was like his whole face lit up. I think that was the first time I knew I never wanted to stop looking at that smile.

Michel’s Review

Chasing Fireflies by Claudia Burgoa is one of my favorite books she has written. This coming of age romance spans over twenty years of family, friends, life, and love. It captures the complete untainted innocent hearts of children to the jaded, weary hearts after life has reared it’s ugly side. Through it all the the strength of family and friendship is the glue that holds Kaitlyn Blythe and Oliver Tanner together. Their story begins at the precious age of four and five, when popsicles on lazy summer days and chasing fireflies are the most important things to do in Knox Ridge, GA.

Small towns like Knox Ridge hold more than southern charm, they hold a history of generations of families and friends sharing their lives with one another. These towns  hold their secrets close to heart but share their generous souls with generations. Knox Ridge is the heartbeat for generations of Blythes and Tanners.

Kaitlynn and Ollie have known each other all of their lives. They became friends when Ollie’s mother moved in next door to the Blythe family home. The moment they met they were destined to share their lives. From the childhood innocence to the angsty teenagers, both Kaitlynn and Ollie grew up depending on one another until Kaitlynn’s sister stepped in and changed it all.  It sent them both in directions in life, away from Knox Ridge. It will take years for them both to find their way home and back to one another. Good things are worth waiting for and the magic in chasing fireflies is still there. Kaitlynn and Ollie both need that special magic to soother their weary souls. They need each other.

Without saying too much more about the content of the book I will say that this book was alsolutely magical. Ollie and Kaitlynn came to life and jumped off the pages. Their magical fireflies illuminated their story and made their lives special.

“Fireflies knew how to call each other back home”

Stefan Sabbioni showed up in my bedroom on my sixteenth birthday. Uninvited, he stood in the shadows smelling of whiskey and death and wrapped a broken, blood-crusted necklace around my neck.

I thought he’d strangle me with it.

That night, he left a message for my father. He said he’d be back to take something precious.

I never delivered that message, though. I wonder if things would be different if I had because now, two years later, he’s back. And he’s not hiding in any shadows.

He’s come to make good on his promise.
He’s back to take that something precious.
Me.

Stefan

Marchese is the manipulator of my family’s tragedy. I won’t just bring him to his knees. I’ll bury him for what he did.

Taking his daughter is only the beginning. I’ll do it knowing I’m starting a war. I’ll do it knowing my enemies will become his allies. They’ll stop at nothing to destroy me and he’ll stop at nothing to get her back.

I’ve never shied away from war, though. I’m not one to play nice and I don’t share my toys. I’ll demolish you if you touch what’s mine.

And she is most definitely mine.

My life is over.

I swore I would never work at the whiskey distillery with my last name on it, that I would never be a part of my father’s legacy. But when I graduated with my art degree and realized there were no jobs, the devil appeared, and I sold my soul, agreeing to work in the family business if he’d give me the art studio I’d always dreamed of.

It can’t be that bad, I thought.

Until I realized my new boss was Logan Becker.

The Becker brothers have a reputation for being trouble, and since I love trouble, it’s no surprise to me that I’m infatuated by that forbidden fruit the first day I walk into the distillery. That lean, whiskey-eyed, too-hot-for-his-own-good man hates me — and I can’t blame him. His family has been at war with mine for decades, and for good reason.

The Beckers and the Scooters are the Montagues and Capulets of Stratford, Tennessee.

But if he’s Romeo, and I’m Juliet? Well… we all know how that story ends — and for that reason, I tell myself to steer clear.

Because if my father finds out I’m falling for Logan Becker, my life actually will be over.

And Logan’s will be, too.

Neat is a stand-alone book in the Becker Brothers Series.

About Kandi:

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a diehard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer, and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

Blurb:

Eight years ago, I gave Grayson Price a piece of my heart.

To him, I was the strange girl whose mom had just abandoned her.

To me, he was a savior, an anchor, someone who stood beside me on that beach.

The next time I saw him, I was twenty, and he was thirty-six.

He didn’t remember me.

And when he flirted…

I didn’t tell him.

By the time he found out, it was too late.

We tried to deny our desire, but our attraction was too enticing.

Eight years ago, I gave Grayson Price a piece of my heart.

Too bad he’s my dad’s best friend.

Excerpt:

The bartender comes over a few seconds later and places a tumbler down in front of me. I lift the glass to my mouth, and as I’m about to swallow, I sense a presence beside me. I turn, take the swig, and look at who’s there.

A woman.

She’s beautiful.

Exquisite, really.

Young.

With long, sun-kissed locks that fall below her breasts, I lift my gaze to study her features. She’s too young for me, that’s for certain. She appears to be in her mid to early twenties with big blue eyes and freckled skin as though she’s just left the beach. Her hair flows in waves that look tousled by the wind.

If I thought she was lovely before, she smiles, and my pulse begins to race. How long has it been since I’ve gotten laid? Too long, if I have to ask.

I watch as she nibbles on her lower lip as if she’s waiting for me to say something. When I don’t, she pulls her shoulders back and then flashes me a smirk.

“Mind if I join you?” But she doesn’t wait for me to answer before she takes the seat beside me. In this position, I can see she’s wearing a dress, and from where she’s perched, it’s short.

“Not at all,” I say. “What would you like?”

“A glass of champagne, please,” she responds. Her voice is soft like an angel.

Fuck.

What is wrong with me?

I turn to the bartender again. “A glass of champagne for the lady.”

A second later, the flute is placed in front of her, and she tips it back, her full lips touching the glass, her tongue sweeping out to lick a drop that missed her mouth.

I wonder what her lips would feel like on mine.

“So what brings you to Malaga?” I ask, needing to know more about this woman. “Business or pleasure?”

A seductive smirk spreads across her face as if she’s up to no good, and the idea of bringing her back to my room later and sinking inside her becomes more and more promising.

“What?”

“Pleasure,” she finally draws out, and I know if I want her, I can have her. I take a swig of my drink and then sear her with my gaze.

“I’m supposed to be meeting a buddy for dinner, but it appears he’s not showing. Are you free tonight?”

Since Tyler isn’t here, I might as well make the best of my trip.

Her eyes widen, and she opens to her mouth to speak, hopefully, to say yes, but then I hear it.

“Grayson,” the voice calls out from behind me, and I turn to find Tyler approaching. I want to curse him for coming now. I know, at first, I hated that he was late, but now that he’s here, I want him to leave.

He turns to the lady on my right and smiles. “I see you found him,” he says to her, and I narrow my brows . . .

Found him?

He knows her.

“Yes, he was kind enough to buy me a drink.” She lifts the glass at him and winks.

“You’re not old enough to drink,” Tyler adds, and I swear it’s like I’m watching a ping-pong game, and I can’t figure out what’s going on.

“I am in Spain,” she chides.

And that makes me look from him to her.

What am I missing?

Tyler . . . Is he cheating on Kim?

“So, Grayson, does she look the same?”

“Does who look the same?”

“River, of course.” He points at the stunning beauty beside me.

She looks familiar. Why do her eyes look familiar, and why is Tyler looking down adoringly at this woman? And then it hits me in the gut.

This is no woman. She’s a girl. A very beautiful one but a girl, nonetheless.

Young.

Very. Fucking. Young.

How did I not see it before? A girl so young, she could be my daughter. She’s his daughter.

Storyline: 3.50

Characters: 3.25

Heat Factor: 3.50

Overall Rating: 3.50

Tempting Her Neighbor by Kylie King is the first book I’ve read from this author.

The story was short but steamy. Only about 70 pages, the story had just enough to be enjoyable and not leave the reader feeling the need for more.

Ava is nearly eighteen. Graham is thirty-eight. Graham is not only Ava’s super-hot neighbor but also a friend and old co-worker of her father’s. Deciding that for her birthday she’s ready to give up the V-Card, Ava decides there’s only one man she wants… Graham.

This is a good little story. I read it in about 30 minutes and felt satisfied with the story and the ending. It was steamy but tamer than most of the books I read. I liked the characters and that it was an age gap romance.

Overall it was a good little story that I feel readers will enjoy.

Blurb:
Dear Santa,

All I want for Christmas is the secret potion that’ll help me resist my brother’s new business partner. You know, the super hot, super sweet, super smart guy I now have to plan all the holiday parties with.

I mean, really. Who thought THAT was a good idea?

Oh, me. Yep, brilliant, strategic me who raised her hand and said yes I’d love to hang mistletoe with that sexy former sports star. I’d love to taste test spiked hot chocolate with that charming, flirty man. I’d love to get snowed in with the one guy I shouldn’t fall for.

As long as I can make it through the holidays I’ll be on my merry way, fa la la la la. But the holidays have a surprise for me.

Cover Reveal + Pre-Order: Great and Precious Things by Rebecca Yarros

How do
you define yourself when others have already decided who you are?
Six years
ago, when Camden Daniels came back from war without his younger brother, no one
in the small town of Alba, Colorado, would forgive him—especially his father.
He left, swearing never to return.
But a
desperate message from his father brings it all back. The betrayal. The pain.
And the need to go home again.
But home is
where the one person he still loves is waiting. Willow. The one woman he can
never have. Because there are secrets buried in Alba that are best left in the
dark.
If only he
could tell his heart to stay locked away when she whispers she’s always loved
him, and always will…
Great and
Precious Things
is a heart-wrenching story about family, betrayal, and
ultimately how far we’re willing to go on behalf of those who need us most.

Synopsis:
From the New York Times bestselling
author of One Last Time comes a breathtaking story about first love, second
chances, and starting over.

Teagan Berkley is trying her best. A
single mom raising a precocious teen, she may have given up on her dreams, but
she’s accepted her life in her small beachside hometown. Now the one person who
abandoned her when she needed him the most has returned, bringing back memories
of what might have been.

Derek Hartz arrives in town with a
teenage daughter – and he’s full of guilt over his failed marriage and the way
he ended his friendship with Teagan. He’s determined to set things right with
her, but first he needs to gain her trust. Something he’s not convinced he
deserves.

As Teagan and Derek open up to each
other—and confess their deepest secrets—it’s impossible for them to deny what’s
always been between them. But just when their happily ever after is within
reach, their complicated history surfaces again and threatens to keep them
apart. Forever.
