Grace had needed Rye to stay across the room. She was able to think better when he wasn’t touching her, but then again, he knew that. Well, if he was going to go down that road, so could she.

“Apparently, my connection to Brandon is out for all the world to see and dissect. No one really knows that you and I reconnected, and it needs to stay that way. Now that I’ve been cleared, the media will hopefully move on. The media, police, and public are always looking for connections in cases like these, and they’ll hit pay dirt when they figure out our history. You need to go to work and stick to your daily routine until this whole thing blows over.”

“Don’t you see that this gives us the advantage? Let us be the ones who control the narrative before this asshole tries to use this against us,” Rye suggested confidently, taking the coffee cup from her hand and setting it gently on the countertop. He leaned in close so that the entire front of his body was touching hers, causing an instant reaction. “I know how much it bothers you to lose control of the situation.”

Grace could have easily kept arguing, running them in circles until they each had to call a stalemate. Fortunately, an impasse would be in her favor, but all she could think of was that this could very well be the last time he was in her apartment for quite a while… at least until the police had caught the individual responsible for Brad’s death.

“You’re so mean,” Grace whispered encouragingly, tilting her head back as she finally allowed him to press his warm lips against her neck. Did he truly believe that she would fall for this type of persuasion? It would have been laughable had her body not responded to his in kind. Well, it seemed that she would have to improvise and turn the tables to her advantage. She ever so slowly ran her right hand over his wrinkled shirt until she was cupping the bulge in his pants. The vibrations of his groan traveled to every erogenous zone in her body. “Why don’t we think on the merits each other’s positions while we take a shower?”

Rye pulled back, his smoldering gaze zeroing in on her and clearly trying to find the angle she was working in her bid to get him to see things her way. He was a very highly intelligent man. He had to see that he would lose without her cooperation.

“Are you attempting to distract me with sex?”

“Aren’t you doing the very same thing?” Grace countered, purposely slipping past him and heading for her bedroom without looking back. She made sure to emphasize the sway in her hips as she walked away. “Why don’t we see who comes out the victor?”

EXCERPT:

The L’Etoile family traced its roots back to the 13th century. The name carried a popular familiarity thanks to a branch of the family that came to fame in the early 18th century as perfumers to royalty. L’Etoile fragrances became known worldwide and their shop on the Left Bank in Paris remained one of the most famous perfume destinations in the world.

And one of my personal favorites.

Fifty years after the French Revolution one member of the family, Sebastian L’Etoile, settled in Eze, opening a shop to sell his brother’s fragrances. Eventually, he branched out and founded the Museum of Mysteries, mainly as a place to store artifacts brought back from expeditions to Egypt. Sebastian rediscovered a tunnel that extended from the back of the shop into the mountain, closed off long ago by an avalanche, perfect as a repository. So an entrance was created from the shop. A door, with no knob, no knocker, no lock. Just oak panels bound by iron. Which only the curator could open through a complicated puzzle that predated Sebastian L’Etoile’s rediscovery.

Curiosity had gotten the better of me, and so some research had revealed that, in the 5th century, some of the women of Eze, after being branded witches, had used the tunnel as an escape route down to the sea. Their stories were told through carvings in the walls, which Nicodème had allowed me to see. Goodbye messages. Parting advice. Recipes for spells and potions. Final messages to those they were leaving behind. Seeing them at once both moving and hopeful. Now the old tunnel contained over three hundred rare objects.

One of them apparently gone.

Being carted away, through a rainstorm, across the streets of Eze by a thief.

Hildick-Smith hung a left at a fork in the street, which gave me hope. I knew Eze, every warren of turns and alleyways, every dead end. Clearly my quarry wasn’t as well versed since he’d just chosen one of the inescapable routes, this one ending at a viewing platform where tourists could gaze at the valley below, the towns in the distance, and the endless sea and sky.

I took the same left and saw Hildick-Smith ahead.

He stopped running, then casually joined a small grop of visitors with umbrellas enjoying the scenic vista. I slowed, caught my breath, and approached. To gain control of the wooden box, Hildick-Smith had drawn a pistol in the shop and held both me and Nicodème at bay. If threatened, he might use his weapon. My instincts told me to shout for the people to clear out so I could deal with the problem. But approaching I suddenly realized something.

He was gone.

Lexi realized she was in serious trouble the minute the words left Lucas’s mouth. Hell, she’d realized she was in trouble the minute she opened her mouth. What was she thinking? She knew damn well how to behave in a dungeon, but something about this Master made her want to push him. Damn it. She’d been this way all of her life. She had to push. She thought about taking a step back, but before she could make her feet move, Master A had her in a fireman’s hold.

“Hey!” She shouted as her world upended. She turned her head up to throw a desperate look Lucas’s way.

Lucas stood there, a stony cold look on his face. In that moment, he was all Dom, and she’d never seen him look hotter. There was a confidence about him she had rarely seen when he was around her. Lucas was utterly in command at work, but his surety faltered when she walked into the room. Even when he performed a scene with her, she knew he worried about her comfort. He didn’t look worried now. He looked ready.

Her heart started to pound as Master A turned, and she lost sight of Lucas.

“I need a chair, Lucas.” The words came out of the Master’s mouth like a judge delivering a sentence.

“Yes, Sir.” Lucas’s words were silky smooth. There was not a hint of hesitation now. She could hear him moving to do Master A’s bidding.

“What do you think you’re doing?” she asked, though she was a bit less hostile now. She’d fucked up. She was glad Julian wasn’t around to witness it, though Leo would probably tell him. Tears pricked her eyes. Damn, she was proving to Leo she couldn’t handle the lifestyle. “Look, Sir, I’m sorry. It was wrong of me to be rude to you, but I was merely pointing out that Lucas and I had a plan for tonight.”

Reason. She could reason with him, surely. It worked on all the men in her life. Of course, usually she was looking at them instead of trying to plead her case to a group of back muscles. The muscles were unbelievably tight, but his skin—oh, his skin had been decimated in his lower back. It was a mess of white, puckered flesh, and she could see both neat, surgical lines, and jagged edges. She reached out to touch the mass of scars, but she was jerked back over his shoulder and set on her feet before she could make it. She wobbled on her heels, but Master A’s big hands held her shoulders.

“I don’t think you understand how this is going to go, sub. I am the Master, and you are the one being punished. I won’t put up with a spoiled princess telling me how her punishment will go. It will go the way I say it will go. First, you will pay for the insult to me, and then we’ll proceed to the sawhorse.”

“I don’t like the sawhorse.” The words came out breathy and small, because she was beginning to understand that this was serious.

Master A didn’t look like he was planning on giving in. And she hated being called a spoiled princess, but a part of her worried that he was right. The last few years, she’d allowed herself to become spoiled and dependent. She’d fled from everything that hurt her. She’d hidden. She’d let her stepfathers and Lucas coddle and provide for her so she didn’t have to face the truth.

Master A didn’t flinch. “I don’t care. Lucas has done the best he can, but the truth is he wasn’t trained to be a Dom. He might enjoy it from time to time, but he prefers bottoming. You require a firm hand. If you don’t want it, then you’re free to leave. No one is holding you against your will. This is all about consensual play, so you have to make the choice. Do you want the session to continue?”

She hated this part. This was the part that she’d never understood. She had to make the choice, and she couldn’t put it off on anyone else. She wanted for him to simply do it. Then she could blame him later, but that wasn’t what The Club was about. She’d been coming here for over a year, and she finally had to decide to make the choice—stay and put herself in the hands of a stranger, or go and never know what it was like. And then there was the fact that Master A was right. Lucas needed something she couldn’t give him.

She cast her eyes down submissively. How bad could it be? “Yes, Sir.”

“Then strip.”

FREED-AN

Excerpt:

“You have a customer. First booth.” Grace tipped her head toward the front of the restaurant. ““And he’s a cute one. Single, too,” Grace said with a wink.

“So this is what small-town living is like? You know everyone?”

She nodded. “And everyone gets to know you. Now shoo.” She waggled her fingers, indicating Juliette should head up front and serve her customer.

She put a smile on her face and strode toward the first table, stopping short when she came upon him.

He had thick, brown wavy hair, with a strong jaw and hazel eyes, and Grace hadn’t done him justice calling him cute. He was downright gorgeous. A navy tee shirt accented his muscular frame. He had to work out, given the flex and pull of his biceps as he picked up a glass of water and took a long sip.

The men she knew in New York were flimsy compared to this hunky specimen. They wore suits their bodies didn’t fill out and had weak facial profiles. This guy was everything she didn’t know to want, but she was certain he’d be in her dreams from now on.

She swallowed hard and approached, gripping the coffeepot in her hand. “Good morning.”

He looked up and his eyes locked on hers. His mossy-green-brown gaze bored into hers and held on so long the stare felt like a warm caress.

“Good morning to you, pretty lady.”

At his gruff words, a warm flush rose to her cheeks. “Coffee?” she asked, lifting the carafe, her hand suddenly trembling.

“Sure. Thank you.”

She somehow managed to pour the liquid without spilling, but she filled the coffee too high and it seeped over the top, leaking first on the table and then onto his lap.

He jerked as the hot liquid hit his pants.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” She put the carafe down with a clatter, picked up the nearest napkin, and began blotting his shirt and his lap, pressing down to soak up the liquid, only to come into contact with his hard, thick– “Oh!” She yanked her hand back, further mortified.

“You could keep going,” he said, eyes twinkling with laughter.

She wanted to crawl beneath the nearest table and stay there. “I’m so sorry. Did it burn you?” she asked, her cheeks flaming.

“No. It must have been cooler than you realized. I’m fine. Really.”

“Is everything okay over here?” Grace asked, walking over, obviously concerned.

Juliette stepped up, taking responsibility. “I–“

“Just a little accident,” the man said. “It’s no big deal.”

A customer called Grace’s name and she walked away, the incident forgotten. Juliette wished she could put it behind her as easily.

“How about we introduce ourselves, considering you had your hand on my–“

“Juliette,” she said quickly, before he could finish his sentence. “Juliette Collins.”

“Braden Clark,” he said with a knowing grin that made her weak in the knees.

The man’s impact was potent.

“Nice to meet you, Juliette.”

“Same,” she murmured. “Now can I get you a fresh cup of coffee?”

“That would be great.”

She gently picked up the overflowed cup and headed for the kitchen, returning to him with an empty mug and a towel to clean the table. A few careful minutes of serving later, he had his coffee and she was back to her duties, feeling his gaze on her as she worked. His name is Braden Clark and he’s a regular.”

Juliette picked up the coffee carafe. “I’ve got it.”

Thorn

From the first time I played army as a kid, the military has been my life. As an Airborne Major, I’d led my men through two tours in Afghanistan. But when my father was elected president, I became an even greater target for the enemy—a prize for someone to take out. To ensure not only the safety of myself, but of my men, I got stripped of my cammies, shoved into an Armani suit, and placed into a management position at my father’s company. After years of trekking through the desert with an assault rifle, I was way out of my area of expertise, which my transition coordinator was more than happy to let me know on a daily, if not hourly basis. The brunette bombshell would be the death of me in more ways than one, especially since I hadn’t been with a woman since my last deployment. She’s turning out to be one of the greatest foes I’ve ever done battle with.

Isabel

In the backwoods Georgia town I was born in, you either married right out of high school or got the hell out of town. I chose the second and never looked back. After graduating top in my class, I started working for The Callahan Corporation. Fast forward five years and I was about to become the youngest female manager in the history of my department. And then all the blood, sweat, and tears I’d put into my career were for nothing when the boss’s billionaire son was handed my position on a silver platter. Not only that, I was expected to help transition him into the job that was supposed to be mine. Sure, he’s easy on the eyes with his chiseled good-looks and impossibly built physique, but I’m not going to let that distract me. I hope soldier boy is good at military strategy because sabotage is the name of the game I’ll be playing.

EXCERPT:

Today found us doing some last-minute tweaking in preparation for our dinner meeting with George Halliwell. Although it was just a typical business dinner, Thorn appeared exceptionally tense. He kept popping his neck and jerking his hand through his hair. I hated when he did the hair jerk because it made his sandy blond hair look all tousled and sexy like he’d been rolling around in the sheets during a sexathon.

Yes, I utterly despised myself for thinking that.

We’d just hit a tedious part of reviewing the files on the computer when Thorn leaned his head back and pinched the bridge of his nose. “If I’m going to get through the rest of this, I’m going to need some strong coffee.” He stared pointedly at me.

Oh. Hell. No. He was not suggesting I get his coffee.

In a sugary-sweet tone, I replied, “I believe I showed you where the break room is last week, but if you’ve forgotten, it’s down the hall and then take two lefts.”

“I want an espresso from Starbucks.”

“Then you’re going to need to take the elevator and go down the block.”

“How much plainer do I need to make this, Ms. Flannery? I want a Venti espresso from Starbucks, and you’re going to get it for me.”

“Well, Mr. Callahan, there are a lot of things I want that I don’t get. That’s just life. Furthermore, I know you’re still new to the workforce, but being a coffee runner is not part of my job description. You have an assistant, AKA a secretary for that, not to mention a Secret Service agent who is outside thumbing through Cosmo.”

His blue eyes narrowed at me. “I never said it was part of your job. However, I do believe it is part of your job description not to be insubordinate to your superior.”

If I had been a cartoon character, this was the moment imaginary steam would have billowed from my ears at Thorn’s audacity. At that moment, I had two choices—my own version of Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken. Fearing for my job, I could bow to Thorn’s will and get his damn coffee, or I could throw caution to the wind and put Mr. Trust Fund Baby in his place. By now, you should know me well enough to know which one I chose. It also didn’t help that I’d caught the end of Nine to Five, one of my all-time favorites, on HBO when I got in from work the night before. Facing down my own version of Franklin Hart, I was going to make Violet, Doralee, and Judy proud.

I jabbed his chest with my index finger. “Look, soldier boy, I know you’re used to barking orders and having your men and women scramble to obey them, but we’re not in Afghanistan anymore, Toto. Now I’m going to walk out of here and tell your secretary you’re about to piss yourself for an espresso.”

While I fully expected Thorn to be enraged by my declaration, I didn’t expect the amused smirk that twisted on his face. “Alice isn’t here.”

“Excuse me?”

“She took a half day to go to the dentist.”

Damn Alice and her teeth. Now my ass really was on the line. “Fine. I will go get your precious espresso, but don’t doubt for one minute that I’ll be filing a grievance via the proper channels,” I hissed.

Thorn had the audacity to grin. “You make sure you do that.”

MOTHERFUCKER. After I whirled around, I started stalking out of his office.

“Oh, Ms. Flannery?” he called.

I fought the urge to reply, Yes, Satan? Instead, I slowly pivoted around. “Yes, Mr. Callahan?”

“I would offer you some cash, but I’m sure you’ll want a receipt to corroborate your story.”

Smug bastard. Of course I wanted a receipt, and of course I planned to put it with my grievance. I hated that he had the ability to read my mind; it made it hard to maintain any ground with him. Well, sometimes he could read my mind—obviously, if he were fully psychic, he would have busted me for the underhanded shit I’d been doing to him.

I gave a nod of my head before turning back around and sprinting out the door. After I stopped by my office for my purse, I hopped on the elevator. When I jabbed the button for the lobby, the woman behind me snickered.

“Tough day, huh?”

“You could say that.”

“Trust me, I’ve been there.”

The commiseration was nice, but at the same time, I inwardly groaned at my behavior. I mean, when had I sunk so low as to act like a petulant toddler by taking my frustrations out on an elevator button? That was somewhat of a rhetorical question since I knew exactly why I was acting the way I was. It was all because the devil incarnate had usurped me at my job and was hell-bent on driving me batshit crazy.

While it pained me to admit it, I really, really wanted to hurt Thorn Callahan, and that in itself was unnerving because I normally wasn’t a violent person. Back home in Georgia, I was constantly stopping my car to help wayward turtles in the middle of the road. I’d even been known to put spiders outside rather than squishing them.

Ugh, the man was driving me absolutely insane, and it had only been three weeks. How was I possibly going to make it a year to eighteen months with him? As I pushed through the doors of the Starbucks, I found myself actually contemplating the thought of changing companies, but I really didn’t want to go that route. It wasn’t that I couldn’t have found another job, but more about the fact that I loved the Callahan Corporation, which had been home to me for so many years.

After I placed my order for Satan’s precious espresso, I started shuffling around in the bottom of my purse for my debit card, and I finally found it hiding under a bottle of dog laxatives. After I handed the card to the barista, my gaze once again fell inside my purse, more specifically on the bottle.

You see, it wasn’t normal for me to have dog laxatives rolling around in the bottom of my purse. Dani was known to suffer from constipation from time to time, which the vet assured me was part of living the city dog life. I hadn’t meant to bring them with me that day. When I was raking stuff off the kitchen counter and into my purse, I thought I’d swept up a bottle of Midol.

At that moment, a truly devious idea entered my mind. It was so heinous that I actually sucked in an agonized breath upon realizing I’d actually thought it. I even went so far as to glance left and right to make sure no one was staring at me in fear. I don’t know why I thought someone could suddenly have the ability to read my mind, but if they did, I would be in big trouble.

I could almost imagine the expressions of horror on their faces, as well as the dialogue that might take place.

That seemingly normal-looking chick right there? Shes debating putting dog laxatives in her bosss coffee.

Damn, thats cold.

Forget cold—its downright psychotic. If she keeps gobbling up the cuckoo puffs, shell be rocking a straight-jacket down in Bellevue.

I dunno, bosses can be epic pricks. He probably deserves a lengthy ride on the porcelain chariot.

“Espresso for Isabel.” I jumped out of my thoughts at the sound of my name being called.

Excerpt:

Taite is snarling when she stalks in with my lunch a few hours later, and I eye her warily. No one has gotten shot or run into a burning building, so— “Gomez pissing you off?”

She bares her teeth at me, and I smile.

“I know your daddy taught you to play nice with others,” I tease.

“Dad hated getting new partners,” she scoffs.

I laugh, a throaty thing. “It’s only for the day, Tay. You can handle one day away from Miguel.”

She gives me a skeptical look. “Last time he was away for a day, he ended up a hostage in that bank robbery on Fifth, remember?”

I wince. She’s not wrong.

“That was a complete misunderstanding,” Miguel whines, coming over to loop an arm around Taite’s shoulders. She relaxes a little, leaning into him briefly before she elbows him in the gut. “And Crispin was a very nice bank robber.”

“We need to have another talk about befriending perps,” Taite mutters.

I laugh and look up—

And freeze. In the doorway stands a man, tall with dark hair and piercing green eyes. His half smile looks a little confused as he watched Miguel and Taite.

“Oh! Vivi, this is our new officer, Matteo Soto. Matteo, this is Vivian Fitzpatrick, our dispatcher and all around goddess. If there’s anything you need to know, she’s the best person to ask,” Miguel says, beaming at me.

“She’s also brilliant—so don’t play cards with her—and fun as hell, so definitely drink with her,” Taite adds with a smirk.

I point a red fingertip at her and narrow my eyes. “You behave. Don’t scare away fresh meat.”

Matteo laughs, and it’s husky and warm, stroking down my spine and making me want to purr.

“I like calculated risks,” he says, grinning at me.

New Release + Release Blitz + Excerpt + Giveaway + 5-Star Review: The Real Deal by Lauren Blakely

Sometimes you need to find a boyfriend-for-hire in the most unusual of places…

What do you get when you mix a bad boy with a heart of gold and a smart & sassy heroine with a desperate need for a fake relationship? THE REAL DEAL, a brand new, standalone romantic comedy from #1 New York Times bestseller Lauren Blakely! Get a copy of your next favorite feel good rom-com now!

✮✮✮THE REAL DEAL is here! Grab your copy today! ✮✮✮

April Hamilton wants you to know she hasn’t been on GigsForHire since that time she sold her futon after college. She doesn’t even spend that much time online. And even if she did, she would not be looking up personal ads. But going home alone for her family’s summer reunion is an invitation for every single relative to butt into her personal life. She simply can’t handle another blind date with the butcher, the baker or the candlestick maker from her hometown. So when she finds the GigsforHire ad for a boyfriend-for-hire, she’s ready to pay to play.

Heading Home and Need a Buffer? I’m the REAL DEAL.

Theo Banks has been running from the past for years. He’s this close to finally settling all his debts, and one more job as a boyfriend-for-hire will do the trick. He’s no gigolo. Please. He’s something of an actor, and he knows how to slip into any role, including pretending to be April’s new beau — the bad boy with the heart of gold.

Even if it means sleeping in close quarters in that tiny little bed in her parents’ inn. Even if it means spinning tales of a romance that starts to feel all too true. What neither one of them counts on is that amid the egg toss, the arm wrestling, and a fierce game of Lawn Twister that has them tangled up together, they might be feeling the real deal.

She only wanted to show her family once and for all that she had no need to settle down.

He didn’t expect to have the time of his life at her parent’s home.

They didn’t plan on loving every single second of the game.

But can a masterful game of pretend result in true love?

EXCERPT:

~THEO~

When I clock out and head for the park, anticipation runs through my veins like a good buzz on a night out. A reunion booking could be my way out of trouble. A five-day gig might bring me very close to the finish line.

Along the way, I stop in front of a dry cleaner, check my reflection in the plate-glass shop window, and reckon that I look the part April wants: dark jeans, motorcycle boots, and well-worn T-shirt that shows off the ink on my arms. Tribal bands, a sunburst, and a compass. I haven’t shaved in two days, and my stubble is rough. If she wanted clean-cut and business attire, I’d have covered up the tats with a crisp white shirt and a fine silk tie, then slid a blade across my jaw in the a.m. If she wanted sophisticated, I’d have given her the smooth, James Bond voice to boot. She could have me as a country boy, even, in a pair of steel-toed cowboy boots and with the drawl to match.

But April wants the guy who might have screwed her in the restroom of a bar.

She wants gravel and sandpaper, ink and danger, shades and leather.

The more you give someone what they want, the more you get in return.

When I reach the park, I head to the Terrace Bridge. She’s not here, but I’m early, since I like to get a read on any and every situation. I scan the surrounding area, noting the benches, the nearby tables, the cool placid water gurgling under the bridge. June in New York City can seduce you or it can trick you.

What it has in store today is anyone’s guess. I lean my hip against the stone railing, and I wait. Two minutes later, I spot a threesome walking in my direction. My heart thumps, and I groan quietly.

Why does the universe do this to me?

Blond curls, lips like a bow, a tight trim waist. Even from several yards away, I can tell she wears little makeup—she has that fresh-faced, rosy glow about her, and something innocent yet knowing in her expression. Like Lily James, whom I developed a wicked crush on when I watched her in her latest movie.

April’s not tiny, but she’s not towering either. Maybe five-three, five-four. A delicious dream. Which translates roughly to “just my type.” She wears tight jeans, a long black shirt that clings to her figure, and a huge silver necklace with a heart charm that dangles between her breasts.

As if I wouldn’t already be checking them out without the pendant between them.

I’ve had many clients. Keeping it platonic has never been an issue since I’ve never been attracted to a customer.

Until now.

Looks like I’ll be getting familiar with how to resist temptation.

Tracey’s Review

What do you do if you aren’t in a happily settled relationship, but the family reunion is right around the corner, and your bestie ‘fake boyfriend’ has to bail? If you’re April Hamilton, you do what any self-respecting modern woman would do…you find an online stand-in, of course.

With the release of THE REAL DEAL, rom-com queen Lauren Blakely has added another must-read to her catalog of books that should be sitting high atop your romance TBR. April and Theo are so much fun, a couple of people that are just doing what they need to, but who quickly find that their business deal is much more. The chemistry between them is absolutely off the charts, and what starts as a simple job takes a turn for the romantic, leaving them in a place that they didn’t see coming.

Per usual, the supporting characters bring much to the story, lending humor, fun, and a sense of family that is one of the hallmarks of Lauren’s books. THE REAL DEAL is a feel-good, sexy, fun, read, and an absolute delight. Make sure that it’s on your list, and enjoy.

Make Me Crave Excerpt

Allie was so furious, she could barely put two words together. You dont get to just decide that were having a conversation and haul me out here to do it.

If I was going to haul you anywhere, itd be over my shoulder.

Her body clenched at the thought of him doing exactly that, but she fought her reaction back. You are insufferable. Do you know when the last time I had a vacation was? Ten goddamn years ago when I was still in freaking high school and on spring break. Ten. Years. Becka had to twist my arm to get me here, but I was enjoying myself—

I know exactly how thoroughly you were enjoying yourself.

She ignored that because if she tried to deny it, shed be a red-faced liar. That changes nothing. The point is that Im notenjoying myself now, and the only one to blame for that is you. She went to push him back a step, but her hands had a will of their own. They stayed on his chest, and she sucked in a breath at how warm his skin was. The man might be a corporate suit, but he looked perfectly at home in his shorts without a shirt on here in the growing darkness near the beach. It was almost enough to forget all the reasons she never wanted to see him again.

Allie stepped closer and lowered her voice. Nothing you say can make me believe youre anything but a goddamn shark.

Who said Im trying to convince you of anything? The words brushed her mouth as he leaned down, just a little. I am a shark, Allie. Ive never pretended to be anything else.

She started to call him a liar, but he was telling the truth. He hadnt tried to seduce her with sweet words to get her into his bed—hed offered her exactly what she wanted in as many words. Blackandwhite. Simple.

It wasnt simple at all.

I despise you.

You want me. His hands rested lightly on her hips. It tears you up inside that you crave my cock, but you cant fight it no matter how hard you try. He backed her up, step by slow step, until she bumped a tree. Roman kept coming, the side of his face brushing hers. Did you think about how good itd feel to have my fingers sliding into these yoga pants?

No.

Whos the liar now, Allie? His lips caressed her earlobe. Id love a private yoga session. Just us. No friends, no instructors, no clothes. How long do you think wed last before I was on my back and you were riding my cock?

She couldnt breathe. Her skin felt too tight, as if it were several sizes too small, and her core pulsed in time with her racing heart. I would never—

No, Allie. No more lies between us. Youre pissed that Im here—I get that—and youre even more pissed that you want me. Trust me, I know the feeling. I was never supposed to fuck you, and if Id known who you were…

She leaned back enough to look at his face—or what she could see of it in the darkness. If youd known who I was, you wouldnt have gone there with me.

Roman cursed. Even if Id known your name, that wouldnt have stopped me from wanting you. Needing you.

She stroked her hands down his chest to the waistband of his shorts. Do you need me now?

I never stopped.

This was the worst idea. She needed her head clear, and it was nothing but muddled around Roman. He was too big, too beautiful, too overpowering. Even now, she leaned forward, the few inches between them too much distance. He let her, his hands on her hips branding her—but not trying to guide her. Allie inhaled deeply. Do you drug your cologne? Because, seriously, how am I supposed to think straight when you smell so good?”

He chuckled. Im not wearing any.

He was gorgeous and a god in the bedroom, and he had to smell good naturally. Because of course. I dont like you.

You dont know me.

She could argue that, but it didnt feel completely accurate. Allie traced the waistband of his shorts with her fingers. She shouldnt…but she was going to. She unbuttoned his shorts and slipped her hand in to grip his cock. I dont have to know you—I know this.

Youre playing with fire.

Maybe. Definitely. If she was smart, shed release him, walk away and spend the rest of her vacation in as close to bliss as she could get, throwing herself into relaxation before she had to go back to reality. She stroked him again, liking the way his body went tense but his hands stayed still on her hips.

As if he was waiting for permission.

The realization sent a thrill through her. She kept stroking his cock, teasing him. Did you really think it would be that easy?

What would? He spoke through gritted teeth, and her body gave another thrill of pleasure.

Getting your way. She squeezed him around the base and nudged his pants down a little farther so she could cup his balls with her free hand. You thought youd show up here, interrupt my vacation and, what? Id fall all over myself to give you exactly what you wanted?

Roman released one of her hips and braced his hand on the tree behind her. The move brought him closer to her, but not so close that he impeded her movements. She stroked him harder as he slid his cheek against hers, his breathing hitching with every downstroke. He nipped her earlobe. Isnt that exactly what happened last night?

She glared and gave his balls a squeeze that was just shy of vicious. Youre awfully cocky for someone whos got their nether bits in my hands.

Theyre very capable hands. He shifted to press butterfly kisses along her jaw and down her neck even as his hand on her hip squeezed her. Dont stop.

I should. She didnt. I should stop right now and leave you with a wicked case of blue balls. Why was her breath coming as harshly as his? Hed barely touched her, but having his cock in her hands and him so close… Intoxicating. There was no other word for it.

Roman gave her collarbone an openmouthed kiss and dragged his hand up her side to palm her breast. Ill just go back to my villa and jack myself off thinking of your sweet pussy. Not as good as the real thing—nothing is—but you gave me more than enough inspiration to get the job done. He tugged the strap of her tank top off her shoulder. It was one of those things with a built-in bra, so the motion freed her breast. He repeated the move with the other side, and she shivered as the breeze coming in off the water teased her nipples. Beautiful, Roman murmured.

You go overboard with the compliments. She kept up her leisurely stroking. It was like the rest of the world ceased to exist outside their little sphere. It was just her and Roman, driving each other crazy.

I give credit where credit is due. He bent and sucked one nipple into his mouth. The position meant she had to let go of his cock, which she did with reluctance. He cupped her through her yoga pants, the coolness of the tree against her back only highlighting how warm his body was. If I slipped my hand in here, would I find you wet and wanting? I think so. He traced a single finger up the seam of the pants—right over her clit. I think having my cock in your hands turned you on as much as the fact that were ten yards away from the bar and anyone coming up from the beach will get the show of their life.

She pushed back against him even as her hips rolled into his touch. Thats not true.

Liar. She felt more than heard the word as his breath caressed her neck. You get off on this as much as I do. Another stroke through the fabric. Would you take my cock right here, right now?

She started to say yes, but common sense reared its ugly head. Im not fucking you without a condom.

Mmm. He kissed her neck. I know. Roman pulled her pants down in a swift movement. She started to protest, but he went to his knees in front of her and yanked her foot free. Oh. He looped one leg over his shoulder and she caught the glimpse of white teeth when he grinned. Have a little faith, Allie. Im not a complete monster. And then his mouth was on her pussy and she didnt have the breath to argue.

“Without the risk of getting hurt, there is no probability of falling in love,” I tell her. “Vulnerability and love go hand in hand.”

“That must be why all the men are gone.” She smirks. “With that sort of logic, it’s no wonder.”

I take her in—smooth, honey skin that smells like apples, the broad bridge of her nose and arched nostrils. I don’t know how to tell her that back then men were not the romantics. The things we had left of the past: the movies, and the books, and the stories, were things hoped for, not seen.

I lean close so that my mouth is next to her ear, my lips brushing her skin.

“There is no logic in love, little thief. It starts small and grows into something very big and endless. Something you’re willing to die for. Don’t you long to feel something like that? Instead of all the emptiness you’re so used to…”

She pulls back and stares me right in the face. I can’t help myself. The quirky little corner of her mouth is raised like she’s mocking me, probably not the best time to kiss a woman. But I drop my head anyway and kiss her, letting my tongue softly graze her bottom lip. She pauses, her breath sucking in, and then she pushes away from me. For a moment, it’s just the two of us facing each other on the dance floor, the cider lights speckling our faces, and then as abruptly as she pulled away, she turns on her heel and leaves. I smile as I watch her go, her steps unsure like she’s dizzy.

“Dancers don’t get dizzy,” I call after her.

Tomorrow would be soon enough for them to go exploring and try out the standup paddleboards Allie had eyed when she’d checked out the beach.

Her face heated at the fact shed been caught topless sunbathing. Whoever that guy was, hed been far off enough that she couldnt clearly see his face. Those shoulders, though… Allie shivered. Even at a distance, shed seen the cut of his muscles and how purposefully hed maneuvered the kayak through the turquoise waters. The island must have already gone to her head, because shed spent a truly insane moment hoping hed come to shore so she could get a better look at him.

Maybe more than a better look.

Allie laughed at her fanciful thoughts. Vacation hookups were all well and good, but if that was what shed wanted, shed chosen the wrong place to go. Isolation and relaxation were the name of the game on West Island, which was exactly what shed craved when she let Becka talk her into booking the trip. It was the exact opposite of New York and her life there.

But now she found herself wondering if maybe something slightly more chaotic would have been a better choice. The sun and sea had soaked into her blood and the heady feeling had her convinced anything was possible. It was only a week. The perfect length of time for a fling…

If she wasnt on a private island in the middle of the ocean without a single man in sight.

She bypassed the little golf cart that was one of the main forms of transportation here. It felt good to walk after being cooped up on the plane and then lying prone while she sunned herself. She usually taught at least one class a day at Transcend—more if she needed to cover someone elses schedule—so being inactive wasnt natural for her. It was only a mile or two to the restaurant and the day had started to cool as the sun reached for the horizon. Itd be downright pleasant tonight.

Shed make sure to wake early and attend one of the yoga classes offered, and the rest of the day would be filled with activities that would keep restlessness from setting in. There was even scuba diving available, though Allie wasnt sure she was feeling that adventurous. Snorkeling? Sure. Going deeper with only a tank and a few tubes between her and drowning? That would take a whole lot more convincing.

The path was cleared and well maintained to allow the carts to drive without problems, so she let her mind wander as she fell into a natural stride that ate up the distance without tiring her out. Every once in a while, the path would branch off in different directions, some heading toward other villas, some heading deeper inland. There was a small selection of hiking trails that offered tours of the history of the island.

She made it to the restaurant easily, and found it practically deserted. Allie paused in the doorway, wondering if shed misunderstood the woman whod checked them in. Maybe it was closed?

Looks like its just you and me.

She jumped and spun around. The man stood a respectable distance away, but his sheer size ate up the space and made her feel closed in. She froze. I’d recognize those shoulders anywhere. Confirming her suspicion, his gaze slid over her body as if he was reminding himself of what she looked like with nothing but what shed worn on the beach. She tried to swallow past her suddenly dry throat. You.

Me. He finally looked her in the face, and she rocked back on her heels. The man was an Adonis. There was no other way to describe his blond perfection, from his hazel eyes to the square jaw to the cleft in his chin to the body that just wouldnt quit. He might be wearing a shirt now, but the button-down did nothing to hide his muscle definition.

He held out a wide hand with equally perfect square fingers. Let me buy you a drink?

Were at an all-inclusive resort.

His lips twitched, eyes twinkling. Have a drink with me.

Oh, he was good. Charm practically colored the air between them, and she had the inexplicable impulse to close the distance and stroke a finger along his jawline. To flick that cleft chin with her tongue.

Allie gave herself a shake. Since were the only ones here, itd be silly to sit apart.

The look he gave her said he saw right through the excuse, and why not when it was pathetically flimsy? The truth was that this man was magnetic and she suspected shed be drawn to him even in a room full of people. He waved a hand at the empty place. Ladys choice.

How magnanimous of you.

I try.

She laughed and headed for the table in the middle of the small patio. There were half a dozen tables, and she picked a spot that put her back to the building and presented the best view of the ocean through a carefully curated gap in the foliage.

He eyed the view and then the chair on the other side of the table, and then he picked it up and set it adjacent to hers so they were sitting on a diagonal,  rather than directly across from each other. Nice view.

She turned to agree—and found him staring at her.

Allie wasnt falsely modest. Life was too short to play games with body shaming and pretending she didnt have access to a mirror. She was pretty—beautiful when she put some effort into it—but shed given up being skinny or petiteafter the agony of high school, and she wasn’t athletically built like some of the women at her gym. Sure, she had muscle beneath her softness, and she could keep up with the best of them in her spin classes, but she loved food just as much as she loved to sweat, and her curves reflected that. Some guys had a problem with that, though she didnt keep them around as soon as comments like Should you really be eating that? started.

This guy looked at her like he wanted to put her on the table and feast on her for dinner.

The desire stoked the flame inside her that had kindled the second she saw him. She leaned forward, checking his left hand. No ring. No tan lines, either. What brings you to West Island?

Its paradise, isnt it? Who wouldnt want to come here to get away from it all?

That wasnt quite an answer, but she was distracted by the intoxicating way his mouth moved when he spoke. Get ahold of yourself, Allie. Youre in danger of panting for him. She took a quick drink of water that did nothing to quell the heat rising with each minute she sat next to him.

Luckily, a waiter appeared to save her from saying something truly embarrassing. He outlined the menu for the night and took their drink orders, then disappeared as quickly as hed come.

They were in the middle of one of the most beautiful places Allie had ever seen, and she couldnt manage to tear her gaze away from this stranger. She licked her lips, every muscle in her body tensing when he followed the movement. She opened her mouth, but before she could speak, he took her hand, running his thumb over her knuckles.

The touch was innocent enough, but she felt that light movement in places that were most definitely not innocent. She didnt have to look down to know her nipples now pressed against the thin fabric of her sundress.

His smile was slow and sinful and promised things she never would have had the gall to ask for. This is going to sound unforgivably forward, but what do you say we get out of here and go back to my villa?

It was crazy. More than crazy. She didnt even know his name, and she sure as hell didnt know anything more pertinent about him.

But there on the softly lit patio with the tropical scent of some flower she didnt recognize and the soft shushing sound of the tide coming in, she didnt feel like Allie, gym owner and mother hen, the responsible one who could never afford to do anything out of line or make a misstep because too many lives depended on her.

Here, she was just Allie, a woman. A woman who desperately wanted the man staring at her mouth as if he was doing everything in his power to keep from kissing her right then and there. She licked her lips again, secretly delighting in the way a muscle in his jaw jumped. Yes.

Yes?

Yes, lets get out of here.
