It was that or she was laughing at me…

“I have no idea why I’m laughing,” she breathed. Every other word was broken by a terrible attempt at keeping her laughter inside. “But thank you. Whatever you did, I needed that.”

“Happy to be of service.”

“I’m sure you are.”

Slowly, I raised my eyebrows. “Was that an innuendo?”

She ran her hand through her hair, pushing it right back from her face, and rested her hand behind her neck. “No, but of course you took it like that.”

“If it sounds like an innuendo…”

“It’s proof that you have a dirty mind, Brett Walker. Nothing else.”

“I don’t need the innuendo to prove that.”

“As evidenced by your obsession with my boots.”

“Ah,” I smiled, “The fuck me boots.”

Her jaw dropped, but she was kind of smiling too. “Fuck me boots? You call my boots the fuck me boots?”

“Shit. Did I say that out loud?”

She nodded, desperately fighting a smile, which only made me smile wider. “Loud and clear, I’m afraid.”

“Look,” I said, lighting pulling on a bit of her hair. “If you wear boots that go up to your knees with heels, I can only assume you’re inviting me to fuck you, okay? That’s why they’re fuck me boots.”

“Okay, now this makes sense.” She dropped her hand to her lap and blinked at me. “I wore those boots to our disastrous first meeting. Is that why you’re bugging me with the dirty stuff? My boots invited you to fuck me?”

“No. I’m ‘bugging’ you ‘with the dirty stuff’ because I want to fuck you. The boots are a bonus.”

“You…want to fuck me.”

I stared at her flatly. “Yes, Lani. I want to fuck you, and you have no idea how many ways I’ve imagined it.”

“Imagined it,” she echoed.

“You’re much less sassy when you’re tired. I’m not sure I like it. This conversation would be way more fun if you were tearing me a new one.”

That snapped her out of what I could only describe as a daze. “All right. Fine. I’m going to bed. Alone,” she added as she stood. “Thank you for your sweater. I’ll add that to my list of Brett’s Gentlemanly Things.”

I got up and took the sweater from her. “Look, I’ll even open the door for you.” I stepped around her and clasped the door handle. I slowly turned it and opened the door.

“Nice.” She’d apparently found her sass again, because the word was injected with a cocky sarcasm. “Goodnight, Brett.”

“Lani?”

She stopped when she was one step inside the door. “Yeah?”

I swept my arm around her and spun her against the open front door. My grip on it kept it firmly in place as her back collided with the wood, and she inhaled at the exact same moment. Lust burned through my veins, and I took one step in front of her, pinning her to the door.

“What are you doing?” Her voice was breathy, and as I dropped my gaze to her chest, the quickness of her breathing was impossible to miss. Her chest was rising and falling like crazy.

I dipped my head so my lips ghosted over her cheek on their way to her ear. “In case you were wondering,” I murmured against her earlobe. “Against the door is one of the ways I’ve imagined fucking you. With your legs around my waist, your nails in my shoulders, and your wet pussy hugging my cock.”

She exhaled on a shudder. “Asshole,” she whispered.

I placed my fingertips on her heaving chest, right above her heart. The quick dum-dum-dum of its racing beat told me everything I needed to know–she wanted me as much as she hated me.

I stepped back with a smirk curving my lips. “Sweet dreams, kitten.”

Tracey’s Review

Mistakes. We all make them…Some people are more prone to mistakes than others. The reasons why are nobody’s business but the people who make the mistakes, but there is one thing almost all of these people believe: A person is not defined by their mistakes.

When Lani Montana returns to Key Whiskey, FL, for her grandmother’s funeral, the last thing that she’s expecting is to stay. Because eight years and thousands of miles’ distance has shown her that she wants to be any place but there. Reason? Brett Walker, Lani’s one-time best friend and the guy that broke her heart. But Lani’s soon finding that Brett, local heir apparent, and ladies’ man extraordinaire, needs some help, because his reputation and image could use some saving.

Author Emma Hart is a go-to for me. Her books are always right at the top of my TBR, and I know that her signature sass, snark, and laugh-out-loud reads are never going to disappoint. CASANOVA, Emma’s latest endeavor, does not disappoint.

Lani left Whiskey Key right after high school, heart broken, and without a word to anyone. Since then, she’s made quite a name for herself as a journalist, with plenty of accolades to back up her reputation. When a trip home for a funeral turns into a longer stay than anticipated, Lani is pressed into service doing the last thing that she’d have expected: spinning gold out of straw to save the reputation of Brett, once the town darling, and now doing a really good job of going down in flames. One thing she knows, though, is that she is completely immune to Brett and his lady-killing ways. Yep, no way will her heart or her head be turned this time.

Brett is pretty easy to dislike right off the bat. He’s surly, seems really entitled, and is all about the good times. When his family lowers the boom, Brett has no choice but to work with Lani to help polish his tarnished image. But as the story unfolds, sides of Brett emerge that show that you can’t judge a book by its cover, and that there is way more to this sexy guy than meets the eye.

The chemistry that was never allowed to flourish back when they were kids is in full force once Lani and Brett are together again. CASANOVA has all the makings of a second-chance romance with an edge. The heat between Lani and Brett fairly reaches off the page, and, my favorite part? There’s plenty of humor, too, which these two need in order to really start communicating and cut through all of the misconceptions that they’ve had about each other.

Emma has once again written a book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Everything from the slower build-up and unfolding of events, to the sassy repartée, to Emma’s uncanny ability to write families with just the right amount of crazy yet loveable, make CASANOVA an easy 5-stars for me. Getting to know Lani, Brett, and the Whiskey Key crew is a favor that you want to do for yourself.

EXCERPT

His hand caught her, long fingers wrapping around her elbow and causing all sorts of unwelcome sensations as he pulled her back around.

“What?” she asked.

“Waiting for my apology.”

“Sure,” she said agreeably. “When hell freezes over.” She lifted her chin, grateful for her four-inch heels so that she could almost, kind of, not quite look him in the eyes. “I’m in charge of this building, Archer, which means I’m in charge of everything that happens in it. I’m also in charge of everyone who works for this building.”

He cocked his head, looking amused again. “You want to be the boss of me, Elle?” he asked softly.

I am the boss of you.”

Now he outright smiled and her breath caught. Damn, stupid, sexy smile. And then there was The Body. Yes, she thought of it in capital letters, it deserved the respect. “If you don’t want to be walking funny tomorrow,” she said, “you’ll stop invading my personal-space bubble.”

Complete bravado and they both knew it. She’d only been at this job for a year and it’d come as a surprise to her that he’d been in the building at all. An unfortunate coincidence. Before that it’d been years since they’d had any contact, but she still knew enough to get that no one got the better of him.

He was quick, light on his feet, and physically strong. But that wasn’t what made him so dangerous to her. No, it was his sharp intelligence, his quick wit, how he was willing to go as dark as he needed to in order to do what he thought was right.

And then there was the biggie—the way he had of making her feel shockingly alive.

He did as she asked and stepped back but not before pausing to make sure they both knew who was in control here, and it most definitely wasn’t her.

No one did intimidation like Archer, and in his line of work he could be in a coma and still intimidate everyone in the room. He had muscles on top of muscles but didn’t look beefed up like a body builder might. Instead his body seemed lean and seriously badass, with caramel skin that strayed from light to golden to mocha latte depending on what the season was, giving him a look of indeterminable origin.

And sexiness.

It worked for him, allowing him to fit in to just about any situation. Handy on the job, she imagined. But with her he was careful. Distant. And yet she’d seen the way he sometimes looked at her, and on the rare occasion when he’d touched her, like when he guided her through a door with his hand low on her back, he let himself linger. There was always a shocking and baffling yearning beyond both the glances and the touches.

That, or it was all just wishful thinking.

Not that it mattered since he still held back with her. The problem was she yearned too. Yearned for him to see her as a woman, strong and capable enough to stand at his side.

But after what they’d been through, she knew that would never happen. She turned away, annoyed by how her entire body had gone on high alert as always, every inch of her seeming to hum beneath the surface.

She should have just emailed him.

Full Blurb

Preppy finds himself back in a world he once loved, but no longer recognizes. His dim smile can’t hide his inner turmoil and the people he views as family all suddenly feel like polite strangers.

Except for one person. A girl with dark eyes and even darker hair.

A girl who isn’t even an option.

At least, not anymore.

Dre can’t decide who she’s going to listen to. Her heart, her head, or her body. Because two out of those three things have her heading right back to Logan’s Beach. Closure is what she tells herself she’s seeking, but when she unlocks doors that were never meant to be opened she soon discovers that when it comes to Samuel Clearwater, closure might NEVER be an option.

This is book six in the King Series and the second part of Preppy and Dre’s story.

Excerpt

“Oh yeah?” Preppy asked, taking a step forward, crowding me in, staring deep into my eyes with an intensity that had me biting down hard on my lower lip. “Do YOU like a clean look, Doc? Or do you like it dirty? Beards. Tattoos…scars?”

Yes, I like it dirty. So dirty.

I was stunned into silence. Preppy’s proximity was fucking with my brain, and I was afraid I was going to blurt out something that would dig me a deeper hole than I’d already dug for myself. I opened my mouth to answer, but I couldn’t get the words out. Not like I needed to. Preppy answered for me. “If I remember correctly, you like it dirty. Real fucking dirty.”

He took another step. “Remember that first time? In the field? By the train tracks? Remember how I pulled your hair while I fucked you from behind and stretched you open? Remember how it felt to have me moving inside of you? How it felt when you came and screamed in my fucking ear? I do. I remember. Thought of that scream every fucking day since. It was deafening.” He chuckled and pressed his teeth against his bottom lip. He groaned, the sound shot straight to my pussy. “I can still fucking hear it now.”

So can I.

The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. “What are you doing?” I asked, trying to step around him, but he pressed his hands against the wall, caging me in. The warmth of his chest radiated onto mine. I tried to look anywhere but into his eyes, afraid of what I might see, but there wasn’t anywhere else to look. He moved even closer.

Preppy pressed his knee between my thighs, parting my legs. “Me?” he asked, with mock innocence. “I’m just reminiscing with an old friend.”

“This doesn’t feel like just reminiscing.”

He stared intensely into my eyes. “No, not YET it doesn’t.” He grinned. “But it fucking will. Soon.”

Synopsis

Samuel Clearwater, A.K.A Preppy, likes bowties, pancakes, suspenders, good friends, good times, good drugs, and a good f*ck.

He’s worked his way out from beneath a hellish childhood and is living the life he’s always imagined for himself. When he meets a girl, a junkie on the verge of ending it all, he’s torn between his feelings for her and the crippling fear that she could be the one to end the life he loves.

Andrea ‘Dre’ Capulet is strung out and tired.

Tired of living for her next fix. Tired of doing things that make her stomach turn. Tired of looking in the mirror at the reflection of the person she’s become. Just when she decides to end it all, she meets a man who will change the course of both their lives forever.

Release Blitz + Excerpt + 5 Star Review + Giveaway: Taking Turns by J A Huss – The Turning Series – Book 1

Title: Taking Turns
Series: Turning #1
Author: JA Huss
Genre: Dark Erotic Suspense
Release Date: January 18, 2017
Blurb

Chella plays the game of Taking Turns with three men as she comes to terms with her sexuality.

I’ve never been afraid of the dark…but that doesn’t mean I wanted to live in it. And maybe everyone wants what they can’t have, but I should’ve thought it over before I accepted the key and unlocked the door to their forbidden world.

Number One is mostly silent. He watches me with them very carefully. His gaze never wanders. His interest never wanes.

Number Two is mostly gentle. But it’s the other side of him I like best. The wild side.

Number Three is mostly reserved. He refuses to cross the line. Even when I beg.

It was carnal, it was sensual, and it was erotic. That’s it. That’s all it was supposed to be. A trip into the dark. A peek into the forbidden.

I just didn’t expect to like them.

QUIN

“You want it hard tonight?” I ask. “You want me to fuck you hard?” I grab her hair and pull, making her upper body lift up off the mattress. My other hand is digging into the flesh just below her hip.

I scoot back and reach under her thighs, drawing them up so she’s on her knees, and press her face into the pillow as I pound her from behind.

“Yeah,” I say, half speaking, half moaning. “You like it like this, don’t you? You let Bric fuck you like this all the time, don’t you?”

I reach around and smack her tit, which makes her yelp. A high-pitched yelp I’m not familiar with. For a second I think I’ve hurt her, and I slow down. But she backs up into me, covering my dick again. Burying it deep inside her. Everything is already so wet. She feels so goddamned good tonight.

“You fucking whore,” I say, letting go of her hair so she falls face-first back into the pillow. “You let Bric fuck you like this, Rochelle? You like the way he slaps you around? Hmm?”

Hell, I like the way Bric slaps her around. And as soon as that thought enters my head I laugh.

“Maybe we’ll do it rough next weekend. You want that? You want us to fuck you hard? Stick our dicks inside you at the same time?”

Another unfamiliar moan.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” I say, still kinda laughing. But then I let it go and just… fuck her. I grab onto her ass and do it hard. Pounding her with so much force, her head is inching closer and closer to the headboard of the bed.

I don’t stop when it finally makes it there. I just keep thrusting until the pounding is compounded by the headboard crashing into the wall.

She’s moaning. Close. So fucking close to coming. I reach underneath her body and strum her clit to the rhythm we’re making. She goes wild. Wild like I’ve never seen her before. Writhing, and moaning, and gasping for air.

I draw back, grab her hips, and flip her over, one hand pushing her head aside so her cheek is pressing into the pillow, the other one still playing with her pussy. I watch my dick as it slips in and out, just barely able to make it out in the dim, filtered light from outside.

I grab her hair, so fucking ready to come, and yank her head so she has to look at me. Her eyes are closed, but I don’t care. I press my hand over her mouth and close my eyes too. And then I spill inside her. Throwing my head back to let out a groan of relief.

Her legs are trembling from the exertion. Little spasms as she gasps for breath. I laugh a little as I roll off to the side and wrap my arms around her. “What’s wrong, baby? Too much for you tonight?”

No answer.

I bury my head into her neck and smell her hair.

“Did you get a new shampoo?” I ask. “You smell so different.”

No answer.

“You want a date with Bric on Sunday? Hmm? We can skip Smith if you want.” I kiss her neck and then pull back and open my eyes. Trying to get an idea if she’s up for this kind of fun. It’s been a while so I—

I blink my eyes. Three times, fast.

“Rochelle—”

“I’m sorry,” she says. “I’m sorry—”

But I’m up and out of the bed, fisting her hair and pulling her with me. She drops to the floor, whimpering.

“I’m sorry,” she says again.

“Who the fuck are you?” I ask. “Where the fuck is Rochelle?”

“I’m sorry,” she says. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

End of Game

JA Huss is one of those authors that completely takes me by surprise with every new novel or new series she unleashes into the reading world.  Expect the unexpected.  Be prepared for twists and turns that add layers upon layers before reaching a concise conclusion or ending to a story.  The ending may just be the beginning or an unexpected revelation.  Be prepared to journey into the dark sensual world that not only fulfills the erotic fantasy but also delves into the minds of very unique individuals in the darkness.  With JA Huss there is no black or white, light or dark, right or wrong, or good and bad. It’s a combination of it all melding together to make one outstanding and thought provoking story.  The story holds the reader captive and leaves them wanting more.

After reading Taking Turns by JA Huss, I was completely floored by what I had just read.  It was not the typical erotic romance novel that revolves around the darker side of sex or menage scenes that scorch the pages.  It had those elements but also included so much more.  This book is about four characters driven by a dark need. Taking Turns is told through each characters POV with a very clear understanding of who is who in each passage.  Each character stands uniquely on their own merits with distinct and very likable personalities.  While their motivations are questionable, the reader gets a sense of who they are until JA Huss throws another layer to their persona.  What makes this book stand out was not the sex itself, it was how the sex scenes came into play, how each individual approached the situation, and what they gave to reach each situation.

In most cases, erotic romance walks a fine line in definition.  The romance tends to get lost or overpowered by the erotic elements.  I went into this book expecting that to happen. Throughout most of the book the erotic elements were the forefront of the story unfolding. It was questionable if a romance would develop and who would be the ones involved in the romance.  As each man’s personality materialized I found myself hoping he was the one. As the sexual heat intensified between the four, one man began to surface to the top. It is at that point the reader realizes that this story has had the romance all along but it was cleverly disguised as something else.  This is pure JA Huss brilliance at it’s best.

I can honestly say that I am still processing what I read in Taking Turns.  I have many questions that I know will be answered by the end of the series. I have no doubt that JA Huss is going to throw some new kinks into the mix.  She’s going to take the readers on a mind boggling journey before The Turning Series ends.

What started out as a game with no losers or winners has turned into a game of consequences.  I can’t wait to see what comes next in The Turning Series.  Turning Back will release on April 12, 2017.

I lived in the dark for three years. My whole world revolved around the whims and happiness of three men. It was just a trip into the forbidden. A way out of a bad situation and forward into nothingness.

Quin, with his easy smile and charming good looks. He was always there for me… Until he wasn’t.

Smith, and his dispassionate attention. He was never there for me and he never regretted it.

Bric, the one who listened, but only to himself. Self-absorbed, self-obsessed, and self-serving. He was never the one I wanted.

And now he might be the only one I have left.

It was good while it lasted, I guess. But it could’ve been so much more. It could’ve been so much better.

And that’s why I’m turning back.

TRAE
It’s a call that changes my life–and my little girl’s. Years ago, playing for the NBA was the dream, but the Seattle Stallions suck. Worse than that, my old teammate is now the star center–not to mention my number one rival. There has to be a catch, some sort of agenda. Before I was injured, I was the best. Now? There’s no way they want me.

But when I see the roster and salaries, it all comes together. It’s a chance to get on the court again and change our lives. And I just can’t wait for the opportunity to finally take him down. What I never counted on is Courtney Cohen being the game changer.

COURTNEY
I inherited the Bad News Bears of the NBA. When I discovered the star center, my ex fiancé, cheating on me, all I want is to jump ship before the whole thing sinks. But with revenge on my mind, I exact a plan. Take down the dirty player and save my father’s dream.

Suddenly twelve minutes is too little time, and a season is not long enough.

Excerpt

“You still afraid of me?” Courtney asks. I push her hair out of her face. “No.” “I’m afraid of you.” “No beer muscles tonight?” I ask, glancing at her empty glasses. She shakes her head. I scoot in closer to her. “Tell me what you’re afraid of.” “Liking you too much,” she says then takes a drink. I turn her in her seat so she’s facing me. “You’re gonna like me even more when I’m inside you.” Her body grows taut. “You can’t say stuff like that. It makes me uncomfortable.” “Well, now I’m going to have to do it more often to get you used to it; make you crave it, beg for it.”

Michel’s Review

I am a huge fan of sports themed romance books. I have read about almost every sport except for basketball.  When I was presented with the opportunity to review Offensive Rebound by MJ Fields, I jumped on it because I knew it would be a new reading experience for me.  While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, liked the characters, and felt the passion, I found a few glitches in the story that held me back from fully investing in it.

Courtney Cohen has inherited the Seattle Stallions Basketball team.  This team is relatively new and the joke of the NBA world.  Her father had purchased the team and built a state of the art arena with the hopes of leaving a legacy behind for her.  Before he could carry out his intentions and build the legacy he passed away from a sudden heart attack.  Courtney was still in college and had no idea how to handle a multi billion dollar business.  She handed the management over to her boyfriend, Brock Boehiem, who was the star player of the Seattle Stallions.  Months later she’s informed that the organization is almost bankrupt and is about to go under.  She is forced to take over the reins.  Upon her arrival she not only finds out that her team has been mismanaged but that her boyfriend is also a lying cheat.  He has a solid contract so she cannot fire him but she can take over the management.

The organization is a complete mess.  She is going to have to rebuild the inner management from the ground up.  She is also going to have to assert her management over the players and the coach.  She is not a member of the good old boys club and is met with defiance, rebellion, and attitude.  She must gain control of the players before the ball is in her court.  The only player cooperating is the new guy, Trae Rhodes.  Trae Rhodes is a washed up college player that was signed by her father before he passed away.  Why would her father bring on a player that isn’t on the same playing level as her team members.

Trae Rhodes is grateful for the opportunity and a chance in the pros.  His life had drastically changed after a college injury that left him unable to play the game he loved.  His life went in a different direction and he had new priorities that outshine basketball.  Playing at a professional level will give him the income he needs and the credibility he needs in the world of basketball.  It is merely a stepping stone in his life.  Becoming a Seattle Stallion will also give him the opportunity to settle an old score with Brock Boehiem, his most hated enemy.  Charlie Cohen signed him on for a reason and it may not be for his playing abilities.

It’s become clear that Courtney Cohen is Brock Boehiem’s achilles heel.  Trae isn’t sure if can use Courtney to settle his score.  He had too much respect for her old man.  He is beginning to immensely respect the powerful woman Courtney Cohen is becoming.

All is not right on the Seattle Stallions playing court.  Courtney and Trae will soon learn there’s a different game being played.  Together they can turn this team around and make it a contender in the NBA world.

I thoroughly enjoyed the romance between Courtney and Trae.  I loved his dedication to the ones he cared about.  I loved his sense of integrity.  I enjoyed watching Courtney grow from a naive young woman to a powerful executive and sensual woman.  The story had a good premise but I struggled with the professional aspects of it.  My logical mind struggled with it.  It takes more than one or two people to handle a multi billion dollar business.  An organization of this magnitude has an army in the office. It takes multi managers, multi departments, micro managers, and a specialized staff.  The players are professionals under contract.  Their careers and lively hood depends upon their performances.  Their performances dictate whether they stay within the professional world of basketball.  In this book the players seemed to have a high school or college mentality that followed the leader rather than relying on their agents and attorneys.  One player had too much control and that would never happen in the world of professional sports.  The same goes for the coaches.  Coaches and players are not involved in the financial aspect of the business other than receiving their earnings and meeting contractual obligations.

I enjoyed this basketball romance and would recommend to other readers.

Synopsis

CHARMED FOR LIFE?

Thanos Agapiou has always been a charmer. For over two millennia, the vampire had no problem acquiring whom and what he wanted with a flash of his handsome smile. He took for granted the boyish good looks he presumed he’d possess for the rest of eternity.

How very wrong he was.

A nearly fatal attack distorted his entire existence. With his appearance now matching the title many have bestowed their kind—monster—he hides away from the world and all of those who know him, including his Ancient, Eton.

Until one night when a stranger draws him out from the shadows.

OR CURSED FOR ETERNITY?

Ever since Paris Antoniou was thrust into a world of vampires, his reality has become stranger than the history and the myths he’s studied for the past decade.

When he learns the truth about his origins and the power he wields, his confusion and fear have him running for his life. What he doesn’t expect is to run into the arms of Thanos—a vampire who doesn’t intimidate him as much as he intrigues him.

WHAT HAS THE POWER TO MAKE YOU WANT TO SURVIVE?

As their worlds collide under extraordinary circumstances, an attraction neither can deny takes hold. But will that be enough to save Thanos from his demons, or will he condemn Paris to his fate?

Destinies have been changed. Lines have been crossed. And, with tales of the vampire race coming to an end, who will make the ultimate sacrifice?

After all, in a world run by vampires and gods, only one can be the true Master among the Monsters.

And The Blood Shall Run…

LONG AGO, THE Ancients of the vampire race searched for, and created, the one they wished to walk alongside for all eternity—their first-sired. They shared with them their blood, knowledge, and power. Thus creating a complex relationship where the first-sired’s existence integrated and tangled with the very being who made them, solidifying them as one.

Only three such connections exist within the vampiric hierarchy.

One born out of lust.

One born out of loneliness.

And the final born out of need.

As Eton, Ancient of Thanos Agapiou, walked away from where his progeny had sequestered himself with another, the steel-like binding of calm that his first-sired’s presence had once afforded unraveled and snapped like a chain severed. His permanent absence was now the only thing he had left to offer his Thanos to counter his ultimate betrayal. And he knew by giving it exactly what fate he had just sealed for himself.

After all this time, and Thanos’s strict control throughout the centuries, Eton had almost forgotten the allure of that which now stirred to life inside of him. But as the desperate, soul-searing need for destruction clawed for freedom, he recalled the reason for the desperate measures he’d taken the last time this transformation had occurred. Because without Thanos by his side, the infection that afflicted him threatened the very existence of his kind.

It was bound to happen. Just as it had once before. Tonight had been the final cut, but the distance, the separation, that had begun nights before when Thanos had demanded his absence…

“STAY WHERE YOU are. Do not come any closer.”

“Thanos—”

“I said do not come any closer.”

Eton stopped where he was, obeying Thanos’s words, as he always did. “Let me talk to you.”

“I do not want to talk,” Thanos spat. “Especially not with you.”

The venom in those words stung.

“Thanos—”

“I said no. You will at least grant me the simple courtesy of your absence, since I am already to endure an eternity of torment you have inflicted.”

Determined to get through to the angry male across from him, Eton pushed on. “It won’t ail you forever. You will soon heal—”

“Heal?” Thanos thundered as he rounded on Eton.

Eton schooled his earnest features, but he was a millisecond too late.

“You cannot even look at me without flinching. Do not talk to me of healing. This”—Thanos pointed to his scarred face—“this will never heal.”

He was right. Eton knew that, though his appearance didn’t matter to him. When he looked at Thanos, all he saw was his first-sired.

The private lives of the Ancients were rarely discussed. To Vasilios and Diomêdês, their first-sired represented the ones they’d chosen to take under their wing. Someone to share their eternal existence with and ones who would follow them, be loyal to them, and obey.

His and Thanos’s relationship was not that way at all. They kept their bond hidden, and for him, Thanos was the one who owned him—the one who calmed everything that ran riot inside him. O kýriós tou. His master.

“Get out.”

“You don’t mean—”

“I said. Get. Out.”
ETON STAGGERED TO a halt halfway down the hall, and raised a hand to steady himself against the wall. The memory of that night was as vivid now as it was back then, and it had brought with it something far more dangerous than a disconnect between an Ancient and his first-sired.

His teeth tingled, wanting to punch free, and the skin around his lips drew painfully taut. It had been so many centuries since he’d sensed the dark presence within that the force in which it begun to resurface was overwhelming. He needed to get back to the sanctuary of his bedchambers. Back to the one place where he could lock himself inside and use magic to ensure his captivity—if only he could focus long enough to get there. He was grateful that no one was there to witness his undoing.

Eton’s hand shook as he dug his fingertips into the stone until they bled. He needed that bite of pain, since Thanos wasn’t there to offer it, that sting to distract himself from the other, more pressing needs rising up inside of him. As it was, there was no way he’d be able to concentrate long enough to fade while this ugliness was fighting for dominance. His body trembled under his effort to control himself, and just when he thought he had a chance in hell of grasping its leash, Kronos, one of Alasdair’s newlings, came around the far end of the hall.

Eton’s nostrils flared as he scented the male who’d come to a standstill like a deer in the brightest of headlights. As if he sensed the immediate peril he’d unknowingly stumbled upon, Kronos looked around, trying to locate anyone else as he swallowed. Eton heard the reaction as if it were his own, and lowered his eyes to the ground before digging his fingers deeper into the shale under his palm.

“Eton, my Lord,” Kronos said. “I was just coming to—”

“Run,” Eton interrupted, and the low pitch of his voice was not only a warning to this young vampire, but a fucked-up request from the other side of him. The monstrous side.

“Run? But—”

Eton raised his head, and when his eyes, which he knew now would be blood red, met Kronos’s, the vampire took a step back, as if realizing just how much danger he was in.

“Run,” Eton said once again, and this time his voice sounded as though it had been grated over the sharpest, most jagged of edges. It was hoarse, torn, and so foreign that Eton was as stunned as Kronos that it had come from him.

“I…I was coming to check on Thanos,” Kronos said, and then stopped talking when he noted the change that had begun. Eton knew exactly what the young male was seeing. It was a sight only three others had ever borne witness to—and survived.

Kronos’s fangs dropped down in an automatic response to the threat metamorphosing before him. There was shock stamped over his pale features, his entire body trembled, and as he inched away, Eton caught the movement and flashed over in front of the male. His hand jerked out and his bloodied fingertips gripped Kronos’s throat in a punishing hold as he hauled him up and in line with what was a distorted version of the face he wore as Eton. “I told you to run.”

Kronos opened his mouth to respond, but his protestation was never heard. Eton’s fist slammed through the male’s breastbone, and a harsh wheeze expelled from between Kronos’s lips. The cracking and splintering of his ribs only heightened the pleasure Eton’s monster thrived on as he took a hold of the heart within the vampire’s chest cavity and squeezed. As Eton’s fingers sank into the cold organ, Kronos’s eyes widened.

“Yes,” Eton hissed. “You are finally seeing why… Why I told you to flee. Aren’t you, neare?”

“But…” Kronos gasped. “But…why? What are you?”

Eton’s nails extended from each finger with painful precision. But where vampire’s nails were known to extend to pointed tips, his curled into sharp, talon-like claws that scraped the delicate membrane surrounding Kronos’s heart.

“I am daimon, Kronos. A hellish monster that should have been eliminated many years ago. I am a reminder of what dwells within us all.”

Kronos shook his head, and Eton could hear his frenzied thoughts. What’s wrong with him? This isn’t Eton. He’s the calm one. He won’t kill me…

He was right in one sense—Eton wouldn’t kill him. He had made it his mission to be as genteel and accommodating as could be over the years between the last time this happened and now. But…he was no longer thinking as Eton.

As the turmoil inside Eton swirled to a frenzied height of consciousness, he twisted his gnarled hand and then tore it from Kronos’s chest, ripping the vampire’s heart from his body. When the male went limp in his grasp, Eton dropped him to the floor and brought the heart to his nose, where he took a deep inhale.

The demon reveled in its victory as it slowly slithered back to the cracks within his soul, and then he let the organ roll from his palm and land by its lifeless owner at his feet.

His claws retracted and his body twitched as he came back to himself, and as he stood in the silent catacomb of the hall, the realization of what he’d just done slammed into him. Eton turned his hands over to see the scarlet liquid staining his pale skin, and reveled in the thrill it gave him.

Ever so slowly, he raised his hand to his mouth and licked a path along his bloodied fingers, and the red haze of the creature roared to life, threatening to take full control once more.

The metallic thunk of a lock sounded, catching his attention, and when his name was called, Eton realized he must’ve let that roar free. He pivoted on the balls of his feet and was stunned to see that Thanos had come out into the hall.

Ever since his disfigurement, Thanos had refused to leave his chambers. But even with the dark hood on and the half-face skull mask he’d asked for, Eton would know the set of those broad shoulders anywhere. Not to mention the sheer height of him.

Thanos’s blue eyes shifted to the lifeless body by Eton’s feet, and when he raised them once again, Eton knew the vampire understood what had just happened out there.

“Eton—”

Before Thanos could say anything more, though, Eton snarled and took delight in the way Thanos backed up. Oh yes, as one of the few who remotely understood the hideous thing inside of him, Thanos knew exactly the kind of danger he was in, and the flare of his irises was a dead giveaway that he knew he was the cause of it.

That’s right, kyrie mou, Eton shoved into Thanos’s mind. You wanted your freedom. You wanted Eton to leave. And we both know that is the only way this can now end.

And with that, the Ancient who was once Eton faded from the hall.

Over the course of one wild road trip, feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love in this charming rom-com—a standalone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Good Girl.

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

Although listed as a title in the Love Unexpectedly Series, all books in the series stand alone.

“Spock, we’re giving you Horny!” my mom blurts out, apparently fed up with my denseness.

Her utterance is too much for my siblings to handle and they both burst out laughing, retreating into the kitchen to rejoin the party where there’s wine.

Oh what I wouldn’t give for wine right now.

“I, um . . . you’re giving me the car?” I ask.

“Because yours broke down,” my dad explains, walking forward to thump Horny’s dented hood.

“And this one’s . . . not broken down?” I ask skeptically.

Look, it’s not that I’m not grateful. My parents are trying to give me a car, I appreciate the sweetness of the gesture, it’s just . . .

Here’s the thing about Horny: he barely got us three kids through high school. I mean, Horny is the car that sputtered and shook making it the 3.2 miles to Jefferson High, no matter who was behind the wheel.

I’m even going to come all the way clean here and say that early on in my freshmen year, I was embarrassed showing up in Horny. Then I realized I was lucky to have a car at all, and well . . . I dunno, I guess Horny became a part of us Hawkins kids’ charm, because the station wagon was practically an institution from Craig’s high school reign all the way through Brandi’s.

But poor Horny quit working years ago. Much to Brandi’s chagrin, he gave up the ghost a mere two months before her high school graduation, and she spent the last bit of her senior year being picked up by my parents.

“He’s going to take you to California,” Dad says, giving the car another thump.

“Really?” I step forward and run a tentative finger along the familiar panel. He’s had a bath, so at least that’s something. “Because last I knew, he wouldn’t even make it out of the garage.”

“Yeah, well, we neglected him for a while, but he’s right as rain now,” Dad says, puffing out his chest as though Horny’s a fourth child.

“Like, as in he actually starts?”

“Purrs like a kitten,” my mom says with an emphatic nod, even though I know she doesn’t even like cats. “We didn’t believe it, but we took him to church on Sunday and there were no issues.”

I literally bite my tongue to keep from pointing out that this is hardly a feat. Sacred Presbyterian is 0.8 miles away from the house.

“You took Horny into a shop?” I ask, starting to warm to the idea of having a car again. I’m a little touched, actually. Money is tight for my parents. Dad’s a PE teacher, and Mom gives a mean winery tour, but the gig’s never paid much.

“Not exactly, it was more of a bartering situation,” Mom says.

“Yeah?” I say, going around to the driver’s seat, already giddy with the prospect of telling Oscar I’ll be able to come see him in Miami after all, even if I won’t exactly be riding in style.

“Reece agreed to fix him up.”

I’m lowering myself into the car as my dad says this, but I reverse so quickly I hit my head. My skull doesn’t even register the pain, because I’m too busy registering the hurt in my heart at the familiar name. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Reece,” my mom says, giving me a bemused look. “He’s always been handy with cars.”

“He fixed up the car in exchange for what?”

And then I feel—I actually feel—the air change around me as the side door to the garage opens, and a new presence sucks all the air out of the space.

I don’t turn around. I don’t move. But I feel his eyes on me. Over me.

“Reece is headed out to California too,” my oblivious mother chatters on. “It worked out perfectly actually. Now you two can ride together, and your dad and I don’t have to worry about you alone in the middle of nowhere with a twenty-something-year-old car.

They think the car is going to be the problem here? It’s not the car that’s toxic to me. It’s him.

Reece Sullivan. My brother’s best friend. My parents’ “other son.”

Slowly I force myself to turn, and even though I’m prepped, the force of that ice-blue gaze still does something dangerous to me.

He winks, quick and cocky, and I suck in a breath, and I have to wonder . . .

I wonder if my parents would feel differently about their little plan if they knew that their makeshift mechanic is the same guy that popped my cherry six years earlier under their very roof.

And then broke my heart twenty-four hours later.

Synopsis

The rules of The Works have remained unchanged for centuries. There is to be no romantic mixing between any of the five supernatural clans.

But from the moment Oceanus von Stein, second-in-command to the Patchwork family, caught sight of Taegan Conner, daughter of the leader of the Wolves, he knew he would never love anyone else.

Only now, Taegan has been promised in marriage to another, an arrangement to strengthen her family’s alliances—and she gets no say in the matter.

Neither does Oceanus.

While they both know they have their places and responsibilities in their clans, their love is too strong. How can they let go of what they have? Though it is forbidden, Oceanus and Taegan won’t stop until they can have each other. The only problem is that the world is against them, and Oceanus has a threat to his sister’s life to vanquish.

Can they find a way to be together, or will they both always be two Broken Pieces?

Chapter One

Being the oldest isn’t always easy.

Everyone depends on you.

Looks up to you.

You are the poster child for the family.

Plus, you worry about everything.

Well, at least, I do.

Which means being selfish isn’t possible. Maybe not selfish—that word is harsh and I’ve

never really liked it, but something along those lines. What I mean is that my needs, my wants

are not important when I have three younger siblings and a father to worry for.

You see, I’m a very busy man. I have many jobs. The first and most important being to

protect and love my family. With everything inside of me. It is my job to guide my brothers and

sister in the right direction to be future leaders of our community. The community my family

runs. A community that is unseen to the human eye, which is fine by me. Dealing with witches,

wolves, shifters, and vampires, along with the Patchwork citizens is enough in my opinion. They

cause enough drama for one man, yet I love them. I want to protect them.

They are my extended family.

Even if a faction of our Works—the shifters—wants to overthrow my family and take

over, I still care for their well-being. I have to. It’s my job as a future leader of the Works. When

my father decides to step down, which could be at any moment, it will be my job to step up and

be the king this community needs. Not that my father isn’t doing his job; he is. It’s just…he’s

old-school. Very old-school, and while all his parts are working at their full capacity, he isn’t the

man he used to be. So much has changed. This isn’t the 1800s anymore, but my father apparently

missed that memo. He’s budged a bit, adapted some, but he still has the same notions he had

back then, and they drive me absolutely mad.

Beyond furious, actually.

But what do I expect? He lived in a time where a man was always right and you followed

your father, your leader. After he lost his father to the plague, he became the leader and led his

family. I don’t think my father meant for his life to go where it did, but it all changed when he

found his grandfather’s old lab books.

That grandfather was Dr. Frankenstein.

The guy who made Frankenstein’s monster himself. Yes, the stories are true. But what

the stories don’t tell you is that he had a son, who had four more sons, my father being one of

them. With Father’s grandfather gone, and then his own father dying, I doubt anyone expected

for Dr. Frankenstein’s work ever to surface again. But my father was and may be smarter than

his ancestors. For when he found the books, he became obsessed with them, and soon he

developed a formula that granted a man immortality.

True immortality.

He soon administrated the formula to his brother, Samuel. But after their mother and two

other brothers died when the formula didn’t work on them, Samuel and Father were discovered.

So, of course, they fled. They had no choice. But they did have a choice when they decided to

come to America and make their own clan.

A clan full of immortal people who would follow and bow down to them. Or, really, to

my father. I doubt Samuel had much say in it, but my father, yeah, he was drunk with the power

he had. He knew he was the best, a god in his mind, and people flocked to him. They begged for

the formula, needed it, and soon my father had his clan.

His Patchwork.

You would think that would be enough, but it wasn’t. Soon he reached out to the other

supernatural groups. The vampires were first. The main reason was the simple fact that my uncle

loved to sleep with them. The vampires didn’t need anything from my father, but he offered them

an alliance, a way to get them constant blood since he had turned the owner of the local hospital

immortal. As long as the vampires followed my father, he would be there to help them. As

creatures of the night, and being killed off almost every other night by hunters and humans, they

signed on quickly.

Next were the witches. My father promised to export and import anything they needed or

wanted on his fleet of ships. In return, he would use their spells and rituals for things he was

unable to fix.

The wolves signed on for the money. My father needed lots of guards and security

support, and he paid very heavily for them. At first, it was just employment. But somewhere in

there, my father worked out some kind of alliance. It’s beyond me, but he did it, and now they

are basically eating out of his hand.

No pun intended.

The shifters are a whole other story. The resisted us, only coming to us with offers for the

formula itself. Father denied them, of course, but he did ask them to join us. He offered that we

would protect them and even employ some of them. He wanted to make our community

complete with the five strongest clans of supernatural beings. But the shifters didn’t want any

part; they were independent. That was, until people started dying and they needed the protection

my father offered since no one could catch who was killing off their clan. I believe my father had

a part in it, that he hired people to kill them, but he denies it.

Either way, my father got his underground clan, and soon, the rules were in place.

Do what your clan is expected to do. All of us have a particular job to keep the Works

running. The guard support the wolves offer—along with their construction work. The spells and

treatments the witches provide. The political connections the vampires play a part in. And we

can’t forget the connections on Wall Street that the shifters give us. It’s simple, really. Everyone

plays their part and reports back to Father. Well, the clan leaders do, at least.

Another rule is paying your taxes. For obvious reasons, if my father is protecting your

group, curing diseases, providing good housing, and everything else he does, the least you can do

is pay the monthly tax.

Lastly, don’t mix clans. Father wants to keep the purest of bloodlines, to make the future

children of the Works the strongest and best—my father’s words, not mine. Now, that is the rule

that gets broken the most. Mostly by my uncle Samuel and his obsession with vampires. But

even with his lust for the creatures, he has never fathered a child, mostly because vampires can’t

have children. That isn’t the case for other clans, though. And when it happens, I mean, when a

mixed-clan child is conceived, it isn’t long after birth that the child is killed.

That sickens me and will be one of the first things I change when I am the leader of the

Works.

I just have to get there.

“You’re thinking way too hard for someone who just woke up.”

I smile, my heart filling with such unadulterated tenderness for the wide blue eyes that

soon trap me in their gaze. A grin pulls at my sweetheart’s lips, her long, flowing strawberry

blond hair falling every so delicately along her jaw and onto my chest as she traces the scar on

my stomach.

“I thought you were sleeping,” I whisper, my lips pressing against hers as my hands grasp

the thick globes of her ass. Holding her tight against my side, I kiss her. Softly, ever so slowly,

memorizing every single thing about her lips and the way they make me feel.

Perfection. Pure perfection.

When she pulls back, her eyes darken a bit as she throws her leg across me, straddling me

as her nails bite into my chest. “I’m not sleeping,” she says, her cheeks dusting with color as I

drink in the gorgeous freckles along her body. She is covered head to toe in them, and I swear, I

want nothing more than to spend the rest of my days tracing each of them with my tongue, my

fingers, anything. As long as I’m touching her.

My love.

As she moves her hot center against my growing erection, I smile. “I can see that.” My

hand comes up to cup her full breast. “Whatever are you doing up there?”

She scoffs, her wet core making every single thought from before disappear within

seconds. “If you have to ask, I worry for ya,” she jokes, and I smile, my eyes falling shut a bit.

Her voice, her thick Scottish brogue, does the dirtiest things to my body. Turns me on to the

point of no return.

“I thought you had to leave?”

“I think I have a wee bit of time. Maybe we can spend it?”

Bringing her down by a hand at the back of her neck, I kiss her jaw as her breasts press

into my chest. “I know we can,” I say before rolling her over, my body pressing into hers as I

push her legs back into her chest and enter her quickly. She is hot, accepting me and squeezing

me, making me breathless as I stare down into her beautiful, flushed face.

She stuns me, and I just look at her, my lips curving as my cock throbs inside of her,

begging for release. But I can’t move. Not when she is looking at me like that. She reaches up, a

grin pulling at her lips as she runs her thumb down my jaw.

“Gonna stare at me, my love? Or fuck me?”

“Stare,” I say simply, my body heavy against her legs. “I swear I’ve never seen anyone as

beautiful as you.”

Her grin grows, her body flushing even more, and my heart explodes in my chest.

Cupping my face with her other hand, she threads her fingers through my hair. My body breaks

out in gooseflesh as she holds my gaze. When she looks at me, I know she doesn’t see the scars

or the wounded flesh, the cut marks or the gunshot wounds. She sees me, her lover.

Because that’s all I can ever be.

“I love you, Oceanus,” she whispers, her eyes so dark, so full of lust, and of course, love.

Fuck, I love it when she says those words. Those three words that are ever so beautiful—but

more tragic than one could think. Well, that is until I take over the Works. The moment that

happens, which pray God is soon, I will marry my love. I will make her mine, I will put my child

in her, and together we will lead the Works.

She will be my queen.

I don’t care that she is Taegan Conner, the princess of the wolves, because I don’t see her

faction or even her family name.

I see her heart.

And it’s mine.

All mine.

Moving her hair out of her eyes, I kiss her nose before sliding mine against it. “I love you

too, my love.”

When her mouth captures mine, I lift her up, holding her ass in my hands as I fall back on

my haunches, thrusting up into her. Her breath is harsh against my mouth, her breasts heavy

against my chest, and as I drive into her, I don’t care about anything but her and me.

I’m being selfish.

I’m taking what I want.

And I don’t care one bit.

It doesn’t happen enough in my opinion, but I guess, being me, I don’t get that luxury.

Truth be told, being Oceanus von Stein isn’t easy.

But it’s who I am. And while I lose myself inside of this beautiful woman, I don’t think

of anything but her, and that’s okay for now.

Eventually, I’ll be able to do it for the rest of my days.

I just have to be patient.

Because my time is coming.

Excerpt

I’m a woman on a mission when I step off my last flight at six o’clock at night, annoyed it took me an entire freaking day to get here since I made my plans at the last minute. As soon as I leave the rental car desk, I’m headed for my first destination. Logan’s shop.

He’s never going to know what hit him. My skirt is short, my heels are tall, and my hair, skin, and nails are perfect from the pampering I managed to sneak in this week.

I pull into the parking lot an hour and a half later, mostly because I was so busy singing along to every kick-ass female anthem on my playlist that I missed the turn and went fifteen miles in the wrong direction.

But no one needs to know that little detail.

The lights are still on, and Logan’s truck is parked in its normal spot alongside the building. No other cars remain in the lot.

I pull out my phone and switch it out of airplane mode. I told myself I kept it there all day because I was worried about the safety of my flights and obviously because of the FAA regulations, but that’s total bull.

I didn’t trust myself not to answer what must be at least a few messages from Logan. I wanted this to be a surprise. Like when Logan thought I might be pregnant, this is a discussion that needs to happen in person.

A few text messages pop up from him immediately, and they’re progressively more . . . let’s call it assertive.

My Sexy Man: Bruce, call me.

My Sexy Man: Seriously, babe. Call me.

My Sexy Man: CALL ME.

My Sexy Man: This radio silence shit will not fly. Call me, Bruce.

My Sexy Man: Banner Regent, don’t even try to dodge me. I know where you are, and I will come to you and show you how a real man handles this situation.

A smile spreads over my face. I’ve come to terms with a few things in the last twenty-four hours, and one of them is that I don’t care if I’m the first one to say those words I’ve been holding back. I love Logan Brantley, and I’m not going to let another day go by without telling him. To his face.

After I park, I slide out of the car, careful not to pull a Britney and flash anyone my vag because I’m going commando under this skirt, and strut my ass up to the entrance.

I push on the door that opens into the waiting room, but it doesn’t budge. Locked. Well, dammit, that’s not part of my plan. I bang on it, but no one comes. The beat of whatever rock song he’s listening to is thumping through the walls.

I pull my phone out of my wristlet and text him back.

Banner: Open the damn door.

A response pops up in seconds.

My Sexy Man: What door?

Banner: I’m waiting.

Tracey’s Review

OMG, OMG, O.M.Gosh! I read a lot, but there aren’t many times that I stop for virtually nothing, flipping pages like it’s my business, because I love a book so darned much. Okay, yes, there are, but, oh, my gosh. It’s only January, and author Meghan March has released two, yes, TWO, books that are on my 2017 Favorites list.

After the mother of all cliffhangers at the end of REAL GOOD MAN, Meghan totally brings it with this second book of her Real Duet series. More Banner, more Logan, more spurned Kentucky lady smackdowns, this book has it all. I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion, and when I say that I loved everything about this book, I mean everything.

If I thought that I couldn’t love Banner and Logan and the unexpectedly awesome relationship between them any more, I was wrong. Because, just, so much love. This is a couple that totally should not work together, but Meghan showed us in Book 1 that love rises above expectations. (And, yes, I said it, the ‘L’ word, because there’s plenty of it here in REAL GOOD MAN.) I credit both Banner and Logan for breaking through expected outcomes and stereotypes to forge a relationship that no one, not even themselves, saw coming, and making it stronger than all the things and people trying to break them apart.

There’s action aplenty in this book, as the mystery introduced in the first book comes to a dangerous and nail-biting conclusion. And, oh, did I say hot and steamy times that require a fan and copious amounts of icy beverage to cool this reader down? Yep, Logan and Banner are made for each other, and don’t hesitate to show it any chance that they get, sharing both passion and humor in a way that had me both grinning and wiping my forehead as I read.

If you’re not sure yet about this duet of books, let me assure you that they are at the top of my list of books that I’ve read lately that I would not hesitate to recommend. Meghan has won me over times a gazillion with the Real Duet books, and, if I could give them more than 5 stars, I would. No surprise, then, that REAL GOOD MAN nets 5+ steamy, passionate, addictive stars for a couple that stands out as one of my favorites, like, ever. Ever, y’all, so get your fingers clicking and snap these books up. You’re welcome.
