Christmas Candy
A Holiday Romance Novella
By Celia Aaron

goodreads-badge.png

Synopsis
A Christmas novella where everyone gets their just desserts.
Olive had a major crush on Hank in high school. She was the too-smart, slightly chubby girl who gawked as Hank ran track and made all the cheerleaders swoon. After high school, the two went their separate ways. Olive opened a yoga studio and swore off sweets while Hank traveled the world. No problem, right? At least there wasn’t a problem until Hank moved back to town and opened a candy shop across the street from Olive’s studio. Now, Olive will do everything she can to shut her old crush down. But Hank has other plans, and all of them end with an Olive sundae.
Author’s Note: Christmas Candy ends at 25%. As a special holiday treat, The Hard and Dirty Holidays (a set that includes A Stepbrother for Christmas, Bad Boy Valentine, Bad Boy Valentine Wedding, and F*ck of the Irish) is included at the end of this sweet tale for a limited time. Happy Holidays from Celia Aaron!

“Can you call that number again, dear?” Mrs. Carmichael adjusts her enormous bifocals. “I couldn’t hear it over my cats. They meow something terrible when they’re hungry.”
I glance around at the cat-free common room. “Sure. I-14.”

“Thank you.” She stares at her upside down bingo card.

“I wanted to ask you something last night, but I couldn’t quite work up the nerve.” His fingers linger against mine again as he hands me the next ball.

“What?” My voice comes out breathy as I call out the number. We should have had a bingo by now, but I’ve learned everything takes a little longer at the senior center.

He leans over, his warm breath tickling my ear. “I was wondering what your favorite candy is.”

Goosebumps break out along my neck and arms as I snatch the ball from his hands and announce the next number.

“I don’t like candy.” I glance at him. He’s watching me, eating me up with his eyes. Problem is, I can’t say the sensation is unpleasant. Quite the opposite.
“Come on. Everyone likes candy.”

“I don’t.” His nearness is throwing me off, and I stutter out the next number.

“You sure? I saw the way you looked at my candy apple.”

I huff out a breath. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He moves closer, our arms touching. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone.” His conciliatory whisper has my heart stutter-stepping. “You look beautiful, by the way.”

I can’t focus on the numbers, not when he’s winding me up like a clock. It doesn’t help that this is the most distracted I’ve been over a man since … Since senior year when I stared at him running track instead of doing my homework. I’ve fallen into the same hole with the same guy, and I can’t seem to get myself free.

“Candy apples.” I keep my voice low.

“What?” God, his voice in my ear sends shivers shooting down my spine.

“I like candy apples the best.”

“I’d like to see you eat one of my candy apples. Extra caramel for you.” He hands me the next ball, his index finger skating along mine. “Something sweet on your tongue.”

My body goes up in flames as our eyes meet, and I call out, “O-69.”

Michel’s Review
Nothing is sweeter than Christmas Candy.  This was the perfect title for this Christmas novella by Celia Aaron.  A red hot sexy candy maker serving up sinfully decadent delights to a driven and disciplined Yoga master.  They are burning up the calories, finding their zen, and making new holiday traditions.  First they have to battle insecurities, competitive business practices, and old high school misconceptions.
I thoroughly enjoyed this holiday treat.  It was a novella packed with everything readers expect in the romance genre.

Jillian Lima’s whole world was destroyed in a span of a few hours. The same night her childhood love, Brock ‘the Beast’ Mitchell, broke her heart, her life was irrevocably altered by the hand of a stranger with a gun. It takes six years to slowly glue together the shattered pieces of her life, but Jillian is finally ready to stop existing in a past full of pain and regret. She takes a job at her father’s martial arts Academy and she’s going out on her first date since a failed relationship that was more yuck than yum. Jillian is determined to start living.

Brock knows she’s the one he should’ve made his, and what begins as a tentative friendship quickly turns to red-hot chemistry that sparks a flame that burns brighter than lust. Falling for Brock again risks more than her heart, because when the sorrow-filled and guilt-ridden past resurfaces, and a web of lies threatens to rip them apart, the fallout could lay waste to everything they’ve fought to build together, and destroy the dreams of those they care most about.

EXCERPT:

Making my way through the narrow pathways between the tables, I headed back toward the bathroom. Only once I pushed open the double doors and stopped in front of the water-spotted mirror did I realize I’d left my purse at the table, so there’d be no reapplying my lipstick.

I pumped soap onto my hands and waved them under the facet. Water flowed, washing away the suds as I slowly lifted my gaze to my reflection. Normally when I looked at myself, I didn’t really pay attention longer than was necessary to put makeup on without ending up looking like a tutorial gone wrong.

Standing here now, I really looked at myself, though.

I used to wear my hair up all the time, but I’d stopped doing that every day. My hair now hung in waves and the ends curled over the tips of my breasts. I also used to have heavy bangs, but thank God they were long gone. I’d finally learned how to put on eyeliner. That was another miracle. The slight flush of my face darkened my naturally tan skin. My lips were fuller and my nose straight.

My hair was parted to sweep to the left so it shielded my cheek…and my cheek didn’t look that bad, especially considering how it looked the first time I’d seen it after…after days in the hospital.

Hell, my entire face had been one hot mess.

There was a deep indentation in my left cheek, almost like an icepick had been shoved in there, and as I stared at my right jaw line, I was still amazed by what reconstructive plastic surgeons could accomplish. Half my face had literally been pieced back together with an iliac crest graft with a reconstruction plate and a crap ton of dentistry to give me back a full set of functional teeth.

Plastic surgeons didn’t have magic wands, but they were magicians. If you weren’t looking at me straight on, you’d have no idea that my right jaw was thinner than my left.

You’d have no idea what had happened to me that night.

Now I stared back at myself just like I had done that night, six years ago, standing in a bathroom, mere minutes before my entire life came crashing down.

It wasn’t that I hated the way I looked now. The fact that I was alive meant I was one of those rare, walking and breathing statistics.

But even knowing how lucky I was didn’t change the fact that I felt…deformed. That was a harsh word to use. I didn’t like to whip it out often. Doing so on what was so far a pretty good date was probably not a good idea.

Taking a deep breath, I shook my head. I didn’t need my thoughts going in that direction tonight. So far, the dinner had been amazing. Grady was nice and he was cute. I could maybe see myself going out with him again, to an art exhibit, and maybe coffee.

And that was what had freaked me out.

I was not going to let living freak me out.

Nope.

I could give him a chance and not worry about whether or not I was settling.

Turning from the sink, I dried my hands and then readjusted my hair so it fell forward, over my left shoulder and cheek. I walked out of the bathroom and into the narrow hall, gaze trained on the floor as I took about two steps before I realized someone was standing right outside the door, leaning against the wall. Before I nearly plowed into him.

Gasping, I took a step back. All I could see were finely cut black trousers paired with…with old black and white Chucks? What an odd combination, but those shoes reminded me of…

I gave a little shake of my head and stepped to the side. “Sorry. Excuse—”

“Jillian.”

I stopped.

Time stopped.

Everything stopped except my heart, because it was suddenly pounding in my chest too hard, too fast. That deep, rough voice. I recognized it all the way to my very core. Slowly, I lifted my gaze, already knowing what I was going to see but refusing to believe it.

Brock Mitchell stood in front of me.

Crown Jewels

An Off-Limits Romance

By Ella James

Synopsis

From USA Today bestseller Ella James…

After that close-up of his package on the sailboat in Morocco, TMZ started calling him Crown Jewels.
Not that I keep track of Prince Liam. Definitely don’t stalk him online like my friends do.
I’m out of that scene now. My family’s reality show might still be running, but I’ve been off-screen for a while. When people pass me on the sidewalk, they might squint, but most of them don’t scream “Lucy Rhodes” and ask about my love of Lucky Charms or how my broken toe healed.
Prince Liam—my stalking his Instagram—that’s just for fun. It’s my dirty little secret. Trust me, I’m the only woman in the world who doesn’t actually want him.
Except I’m back in the Hamptons for the first time in two years. I’m at a party, and Prince Manwhore is here as well. I tell myself that smile has no effect on me. That his ridiculous charisma is a parlor trick I see right through.
After our one night together, no one knows that I succumbed.
It doesn’t matter. It meant nothing.
Not until I see those two pink lines.

Crown Jewels is an 80,000-word contemporary romance novel with no cliffhanger ending. It is being offered at a reduced price for a limited time during release week only.

LUCY

I awaken in darkness.

The room is pitch black, and someone’s arm is locked around me. For a blind, horrific second, fear grips my heart, so hard and painful that I gasp.

And then I smell him. I’m not sure exactly where I am right at his moment. But I smell aftershave and soap, a little bit of sunscreen and a little bit of sweat, and my body knows it’s him.

Prince Liam.

Liam, prince of the Isle of Gael, is lying in this bed behind me. A few careful, quiet breaths and I’m pretty sure…he’s sleeping.

Holy Hello Kitty. Prince Liam is sleeping next to me. My body flushes, bliss and horror.

How’d we get here? What the hell is going on? And then I feel his fingers in my hair. His hand is in my hair—right now! He fell asleep rubbing my hair.

My eyes fly to the windows: dark. What time is it? My clutch is somewhere in this room. I’m not sure where.

I shut my eyes and try to keep my breathing even as I run the night’s events back through my mind. Downstairs, talking to the Playmate. Bryce. My body jerks at the memory, and I can feel Prince Liam’s body rock a little bit against mine. Big and wide and hard. He’s bowed around me like a shield.

Heat blooms in between my legs.

I freaked out, and he saw me. I embarrassed myself, walked in on some kind of threesome.

Why did he come back?

It’s his room, you moron. I’m probably in his guest room. I draw a deep breath in and feel his sturdy arm tighten around me. I feel his face against my neck, the roughness of his scruffy beard. Warmth spreads through me. Then he stirs some more and makes a low sound in his throat. And then I feel his mouth against my neck. His lips—

He’s kissing me.

I don’t mean to make a sound, but then I feel him press himself against my backside. Terror bubbles in me.

“Stop!”

I pull away, and he’s awake. His eyes, I see them in the dark. They’re wide. He pushes up on his arm and holds his big hand up.

I watch him rub his eyes. He looks around. He looks confused.

“You fell asleep,” I offer.

He blinks at me as if he didn’t understand my words. Then he reaches for me. He takes my hand and cradles it in his two hands. He looks into my eyes.

“Are you all right?” he asks me, voice low, words rolling with that Scottish-sounding accent of his.

“I’m fine.”

He shakes his head slowly, at least I think I see him do that. Then he’s simply staring at me. With those hazel eyes.

Dear God, he’s gorgeous.

His hand traces mine. Then he lies back down and pulls me down beside him. He wraps me up against his body, and I notice he’s not pushing his dick against me anymore.

“You smell good,” he murmurs. “You have pretty hair.”

“Are you drunk?”

I think I see his lips twitch. “I don’t get drunk.”

I turn around to face him. He pushes some hair off my forehead. Then he kisses me. It’s so gentle, so careful, I can’t help responding. He tastes like cinnamon, like liquor. His mouth explores mine, his tongue gliding past my own, his big hand in my hair again.

He kisses me until I can’t breathe, and then he pulls away. “Tá tú álainn.”

I frown.

He smiles, that gentle, gorgeous smile. “Gaelic.” He tips his forehead to mine. He says something else I don’t understand, then kisses the side of my mouth, his lips feathering gently over mine.

I feel his knee move, as if he’s shifting his hips, and I can’t help pulling him closer for another kiss.

I touch his shoulders as I kiss him, and I can feel his body tense under my hands. His tongue glides back into my mouth, and he moans.

Holy shit. I kiss him deeper and his body rocks against mine. His hands are on my head; he pulls me closer, till we’re pressed together, chest to hips.

He says something low and very soft, something that sounds like, “On all that is holy…”

Then his hand is on my shoulder, squeezing. His hand is squeezing, then he’s grasping my breast.

I grind myself against him, gasping between kisses. My body burns with heat and fear. My heart riots. Adrenaline almost overcomes me at the feel of his hard body up against mine, his chest pumping, his breath warm. I’m losing it when his hand leaves my breast and slides around my hip to cradle me against his body.

God, I’ve never been handled this way, as if…I’m everything. He’s rough then gentle, firm then tender, desperate all the while. I can feel the warmth of his breath, can hear the pattern of his ragged inhalations.

His scratchy cheek presses against mine, and I can feel his body heat. He leans away, his chest still pumping. I put my hand between his pecs. I can’t help it. He’s so…perfect. My fingertips wander to the seal above his heart, the royal tattoo he got when he was younger.

I trace my finger down his chest, and the prince’s abs harden. “Christ.” That was a flinch, I think.

I swear to God, I can feel the heat pulse in between my legs. Something overtakes me, something big and brash and heady: power.

I rub my fingertip over the hair that trails down toward his pants, and that’s when I see his stiff erection.

My brain explodes with memories of perfection wrapped in wet boxer-briefs. I’m not thinking. I just touch.

He sucks back a sharp breath. I trace the plump, perfect head, hating the fabric barrier between my hand and his skin. Liam groans, his length jutting toward me.

I look into his eyes and find them hazy. “Lucy…”

“You want me to touch it?” My voice is sultry, not my voice at all.

I’m rubbing him before he has the chance to answer. His breath catches. Then he moans low in his throat and starts to pant. His eyes are shut, I find as I rub his thick cock through his pants. His hand hovers over my mine as if he wants to grab me. His long fingers curl into a fist.

I drag my fingers down the length of him, surprised to find he’s even bigger than I thought. His heavy eyelids lift a little. My Lord, he’s fucking gorgeous. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more perfect male, and this one, shirtless, panting as he presses up against my hand—he turns me on so much I want to screw him.

Holy hell, I want to screw Prince Liam.

I try to grip him through his pants, fondle his balls, waiting for him to jump up and throw me on the bed. Waiting for him to scare me.

But he doesn’t.

He just locks his big fist up over my arm and leans his head back on the pillow, groaning through his locked jaw as I unbutton his pants and come to his black boxer-briefs. I can see his head so well. I see the rim of it. I rub a fingertip over it and he mutters a curse.

His hand uncurls, the side of his fingers touching my wrist. I reach inside his boxer-briefs and wrap my hand around him. Still, he doesn’t grab my arm. I watch his face as I firm up my grip and stroke him. I can feel his hips tremble. I fold his fly back, try to pull his briefs down. He lifts his hips and pulls them down himself. I look with wide eyes at what has got to be an eight-inch dick and the weighty balls below. Crown Jewels.

I touch his balls and watch them draw up underneath my fingertips. I run my hand from the base of his cock back up toward the tip. His eyes open on a deep breath.

“Fuck…”

Oh my God, is that a little bit of precum? I feel a rush of heat between my own legs as I blink at it. For the first time in two years, I clench. I feel greedy. Needy.

Holy hell, I have to have him.

My head spins as I climb on top of him, straddling his hips as his eyes rise to meet mine. He flexes beneath me, and a zip of fear streaks through me. That he’ll throw me off and get on top of me. That he’ll grab my wrists and squeeze. Instead, Prince Liam peers up at me with hooded eyes, smiling a pirate’s smile as his hand rubs my knee.

I pull my dress up and struggle with my thong. My hands are shaking too hard to pull it off. I rub myself against him, panting. Liam groans.

“Christ almighty…” His jaw is locked as he rasps, “Lucy.” Then he rips my thong.

He says something else in what I realize must be Gaelic. Then he’s reaching down, stroking himself. With the fingers of his other hand, he parts my lips. He rubs a finger over me, making me tremble.

“Fuck, you’re beautiful…”

I don’t know how he knows because his eyes are shut, but I love the way his face looks. Suddenly it’s all I can do to stay still. And then I can’t. I’m shaking as I pull his cock away from his amazing abs. My legs quiver as I rise up, holding his shaft, pushing his thick head against my entrance.

His lips are parted now, his eyes still shut. I sink down on him inch by slow, amazing inch and watch him writhe, knees coming up around me as I take him deep—so deep I can’t help crying out.

His hands squeeze my hips, not to hard. And then he’s lifting me off him, his muscular arms straining so my legs don’t have to. His powerful abs ripple with each thrust: he rises just a little, letting me sink down on him. I put my hands over his and use my legs to rise and fall, taking control of things. Taking control because I have to.

He doesn’t let me fully. Liam sets the pace, his big breaths punctuating the rhythm of our thrusting. I’m rising up, using the well-honed muscles of my thighs, but his hands around my hips are lifting, too.

When I sink, I lean over, pinching his nipples sometimes, reaching around behind myself to cup his balls. His groans are loud and ragged. His face is tense, almost pained, and I love it when I feel the goose-bumps on his diamond-chiseled hips.

Then he changes something up… Changes the angle. When he fills me up…I lose control. I can’t stop the sounds from pouring from my throat. Can’t stop the way I lean sideways against his raised knee, gripping it with my arm. I hear a whimper, and it’s mine.

“Oh God!” I’m so full. I don’t think I’ve ever been this full before…

“That’s right,” he murmurs, thrusting harder.

When he pulls out and lifts me up, I’m desperate for him, scrambling to get back on that huge cock. My skin tingles with sweat. My mouth is open; I can’t breathe—

I feel him harden, swell and tighten, stretching me. When I’m filled with him, I grind around.

“Oh my God!”

I’m right there on the edge. He draws me off him, and I fumble to grab onto his arms and press myself back down. My fingers graze his hips, and then he pushes me down hard. I’m filled so deep and full, my body starts to quake. My stomach quivers, and my eyes flip open just in time to find he’s watching me.

His lips are curved, his eyes lust-hazed.

I do the only thing I can think of to equalize the situation, reaching around behind myself again to roll his big balls in my shaking fingers. One roll, followed by a gentle tug. I feel his cock thump hard inside me, causing me to lean down on him. That’s where I lie as heat fills me: there across his flawless chest.

For just a second, his hands cup my face. His eyes linger on mine, his mouth still open with pleasure, his thick pecs rising under me.

“Luce. Goddamn.”

It’s an exultation.

I feel so good there on him, I can’t move for a long moment. He just came inside me, and it feels so right.

I marvel at how…fine I feel. How tired and good and…good.

I stroke my nails up his side. “Mmm.” I grin.

Liam laughs, a throaty sound.

I feel his lips on my forehead as he leans up, the quick swipe of his palm over my hair. “You are fucking perfect, Lucy Rhodes.”

He pushes up on one elbow, holding me against him for a moment, one big arm around me.

Then I’m easing off him, and he’s moving lithely off the bed. “Let me get you something.”

I sink into the covers, waiting for the fallout: for a shudder, for a sob. But nothing comes.

He returns smirking, and grins broadly when our eyes meet. Instead of handing me the warm, wet cloth, he delves under the covers, his knuckles grazing my belly as he spreads the cloth over me and lays his hand there, as if offering some wordless blessing over my vagina.

I start laughing, and he laughs with me.

“You’re a real prince, Liam.”

He grins. “I’ve been told.”

And it’s so natural, I don’t feel funny cleaning up under the covers with him there beside me.

I stretch out on my back, catching my breath. I’m thinking how sad I’ll be to get up when he lies beside me, his big shoulder bumping mine.

“You were incredible,” he says in a gravelly voice. And somehow, it’s not patronizing or weird. Just very, very genuine.

I giggle like a dumb teenager.

He turns over on his side, propping his head in his hand as he looks down on me. Then he lies back flat, wraps an arm around me, pulls me close, and kisses just under my ear. One of his legs rubs mine. He makes a soft, male sound, then falls asleep as if we do this every night.

I lie awake staring at him in the darkness. Who is this man? I run my open palm over his hair, which he let down sometime when I wasn’t looking. He relaxes just a little more against me, and I like it. That’s the last thought that I have before I wake up to an empty bed.

Michel’s Review

The one thing I have come to realize is that Ella James is one of those authors that can write any kind of sub genre romance and is guaranteed to be page turner.  She has once again held me captive with her story.

I am not a huge fan of royal romances.  Crown Jewels is not the typical royal romance.  It’s a story of two very real people struggling within their elite world.  They are struggling to maintain a normal existence where they are seen as individuals rather than an image.  Both of these beautiful people are hiding secrets, trying to stay one step ahead of the press and social media, while trying to find a healthy balance within their own personal lives.

Prince Liam is not your ordinary prince.  He’s a certified playboy that’s known for partying and womanizing.  He doesn’t have the usual royal duties most princes in line to become king have.  He won’t become king until he is forty.  His country is small and very self sufficient.  There are some political differences with the royals and the parliament but on the most part those issues are not the problem.  He spent his childhood in American boarding schools.  The American influence has shaped his views, behaviors, and future desires.

Lucy Rhodes is the youngest child in the famous Reality Royal Family of the Hamptons.  Her family’s prime time reality show gives the Kardashians a run for their money.  Lucy left the family show and has chosen to live out of the spotlight for the last two years.  After a disastrous relationship she’s been licking her wounds and finding herself on horse ranch in Colorado.

A summer visit to the Hamptons to catch up with her childhood friends turns out to be a life changing event for Lucy.  She meets the despicable Prince Liam, who she secretly follows on instagram and snap chat, and ends up having a memorable one night stand.  A one night stand that leaves her pregnant.  Now she has to tell Prince Liam about the RBB, the royal bastard baby.  She’s prepared to raise the baby by herself.  What she wasn’t prepared for is the real man that Prince Liam is.

As Lucy and Liam form a beautiful friendship that is leading to a romantic relationship, their secrets could destroy a beautiful beginning.  Lucy has to tell Liam about the baby.  Liam is hiding his own secrets that could destroy both Lucy and the baby.

As for the rest…. READ IT YOURSELF!   CROWN JEWELS BY ELLA JAMES is outstanding!

When I opened the front door and came face to face with Finn’s bare arse I screamed, “What the hell Finn!” I turned my back on him and faced the closed door, “What are you doing? Put some damn pants on.”

“Ah, can you give us a minute?” Finn’s voice sounded small and embarrassed.

“Yep, you betcha. Call out when you’re decent, we are going to be having a serious conversation as soon as clothes are back in play.” Then I re-opened the front door and stepped back out on to the porch.

A minute or two later I heard Finn call out, “Decent.” And I turned the handle and let myself back in.

My jaw dropped when I saw Nixie sitting on the couch beside Finn. Her face as beat red as his. “Wha— Ah— I’m so confused.” I stuttered. “I wish I hadn’t seen what I clearly just saw, but I’m happy to see you, Nixie.”

Her shoulders relaxed in relief, and she gave me a small finger wave, “It’s good to see you too Tory. Sorry about—” her hand gestured between the two of them, “this,” she finished.

“Me too,” I muttered.

Finn was smiling brightly, and I glared at him as I plonked down on the couch that I had not just seen him having sex on. “You’re paying to have that couch cleaned.” I told him. “I watch Netflix on that couch!” I whined. “Couldn’t you have taken it to your bedroom? I mean seriously, what made you think the couch was a good place for you two to be bumping uglies?”

Nixie’s eyes bounced between Finn and myself with a puzzled expression on her pretty face.

I stood up, “You know what, don’t answer that, I can’t deal with this today. I’m exhausted. I just got an awesome tattoo, by the way. Just so you know. I was going to surprise you with it, but you don’t get to see the awesomeness until later now.”

“You what?” Finn asked.

I held my hand up in his face, “Talk to the hand ‘cause the face ain’t listening. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go scrub my eyeballs with bleach if you don’t mind.” I told him as I walked down the hallway. Every time I closed my damn eyes I could see Finn thrusting into Nixie and I wanted to hurl.

My day couldn’t possibly get any worse. Talking sex and babies with Weston, then seeing Finn’s arse as he pumped into his ex-girlfriend on my Netflix couch. I needed a huge glass of wine and a scalding hot bath to wash it all away.

Tracey’s Review

Wow, talk about unrequited love! Weston Banks has been waiting what seems like forever for the woman of his dreams, Tori Banks. She’s literally right next door, and he knows that she feels the same way. Problem? She’s his best friends mom. Tori Banks wishes that her heart would just shut up. She knows that the feelings that she has for Wes, her son Finn’s bestie, can’t be good, but, darn it, they sure are persistent. What’s a lady to do?

I’m not gonna lie, I read the blurb for WHAT IF IT’S RIGHT by author J.B. Heller, and I was already all in. I’m a fan of the May-December trope, and this sounded like a great example. I can happily say that I was not disappointed, because J.B. has written a novel that is, by turn, humorous, emotional, and sexy, and that satisfies on every front.

Tori Banks’ life changes dramatically in an instant, and thrusts her into the role of ‘mum’ to her young nephew, Finn. Flying by the seat of her pants, Tori manages to create a normal, happy life for the two of them, one that includes moving in next door to Wes Banks and his mother. Finn and Wes are friends from the very first, and the two spend pretty much every minute together. When Wes starts making, erm, those sorts of comments towards Tori, she chalks it up to his naturally flirtatious and snarky nature, but, as time goes on, it becomes clear that there’s more to it. And, if she’s honest, Tori can’t say that the feelings that Wes inspires in her are totally motherly. I see trouble ahead, folks…

The ‘yuck’ factor might be strong for those not into the scenario of an older woman and younger man, and there is a touch of the forbidden in WHAT IF IT’S RIGHT. Neither Tori nor Wes want to hurt Finn or Wes’ mother, but they can’t help the way that they feel. Tori makes a valiant effort to stand strong, too. But J.B. has done a good job of writing this story in a way that is neither inappropriate or beyond the pale of acceptable, and does so with characters that are likable and funny, and a storyline that rolls right along, drawing you right in.

WHAT IF IT’S RIGHT is a book that, happily, lived up to my expectations, and made for a mostly lighthearted and sexy, sometimes emotional, read. It’s an easy 4 stars for me, and I look forward to reading more books by J.B. Heller in future.

Holiday With A Twist

A Holiday Romance Novella

By Shannon Stacey

Buy: Amazon / B & N

Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Shannon Stacey celebrates the season in this brand-new holiday novella

After a messy breakup, Leigh Holloway is ready to start her life over. Until her parents put the family home on the market and call her back for one final, memory-making Christmas. The last thing she wants to do is deprive her mom of the perfect holiday, so she’ll lie her way through the visit and worry about her future in the New Year. Too bad the only bar in town is owned by a guy she seriously wronged in high school.

Leigh’s best friend broke Croy Dawson’s heart, and Croy knows it was Leigh’s fault. They’ve never liked each other, but Croy isn’t cruel: he’d never turn away a pretty woman in need of some family-Christmas fortification. He doesn’t expect her to drink just enough candy-cane martinis to tell him her secrets—and he definitely doesn’t expect to get caught up in her holiday madness.

Despite the surprising love and laughter, Croy and Leigh can’t escape the truth: he can’t walk away from his family obligations and she has a life and career to reboot. But anything is possible if your holiday comes with a twist…

Michel’s Review

Are you looking for a sexy holiday romance to kick off the holiday season?  Look no further, Shannon Stacey has delivered another delightful holiday romance just in time for the season.  This novella reunites old friends and gives them a second chance at happiness.

Leigh and Croy have a history.  It’s not a romantic history.  They were best friends all their lives until his girlfriend broke up with him the first year of college.  Croy has blamed Leigh for the heartbreak because she convinced his girlfriend to go away to college in Florida.

Leigh left New England for bigger and better things.  She built a career and life in Texas after college.  Now she’s returning home to help her parents sell her childhood home.  She has kept several things about her life in Texas a secret from her family.  She intends to keep those secrets until after the holidays.

Her return home isn’t exactly how she expected.  Her older sister is back home with a new baby, an adorable pug, and an ugly divorce behind her.  Her parents are different creatures than they were in her childhood.  Her hometown has changed.  She definitely needs a drink to get through this homecoming.

Croy is the bartender at the local pub/ restaurant his family owns.  When his old friend Leigh walks through the door he doesn’t know whether to be happy or refuse to serve her.  When she orders a candy cane martini, he knows his old friend is not the same girl that left town years ago.  Maybe they can rekindle their friendship and weather the holiday season together.

Love is the air this Christmas.  Leigh and Croy are in for a big gust of Christmas Romance.

Shannon Stacey always delivers a heartwarming holiday romance that has all the feel goods readers want.  She also makes you crave a candy cane martini.

Michel’s Review

Series Review

The Friends Series by Monica Murphy is Mature YA.  There is some sexual content. I would recommend this series to ages sixteen or older…..

Welcome to the world of the new breed of teenagers.  While this new breed of teenagers seems a little more worldly, completely jaded, conscientiously immoral, and emotionally stunted, they are still normal teenagers in regards to emotional maturity and growth development.  What has changed is the world in which they are becoming adults in.  As a mother of two teenagers, one a junior in high school and the other a freshman in college; I have witnessed and dealt with very similar situations that come about within this series.  Monica Murphy has captured today’s new teenager and put their teen drama in words that keep the reader captivated in their world.

Today’s new breed of teenagers differs from our generation because of the technology and social media age.  They have access to too much information through technology. Because of social media they no longer have to take responsibility of their actions and comments.  They can hide behind hashtags.  It’s a new form of bullying and self importance.

Their world is fast paced.  Most parents are busy working and tending responsibilities.  Others are self absorbed and leave their children to tend their own business.  They rely on technology as a source of keeping their children occupied outside of school.  Parents have been taught to give their children better lives than they had themselves when they were younger.  The result has become astonishing.  Kids today have everything from phones, computers, tablets, gaming systems, and every other conceivable gadget on the market.  They are given cars the moment they become licensed to drive because it makes life more convenient for all of the family members.

These kids have not been taught to earn their way except for the grades they earn in school.  When they struggle with school, we become helicopter parents and make their way easier.  We expect them to excel but don’t allow them to fail. Some parents take the other route and treat their children as business transaction.  They pay them to excel, they give them money to entertain themselves, they use money as a motivator for obtaining success.  They do not allow them to fail.

The result is the new breed of teenagers trying to grow up too fast.  They are still not emotionally mature enough to handle a lot of situations they get themselves into.  Their world depends upon social media to validate them as individuals.  Somewhere along the way these kids have a crash and burn crisis they can’t handle.

I know I am not the perfect parent.  My kids are not the perfect teenagers.  We have had our own very real teenage dramas in the family.  I am sure there are more to come.  The one thing I have learned along the way is to take everything in moderation, set better examples, and communicate better.

They will become adults.  They will learn how to deal with real life.  They will go through the same journey to maturing and becoming emotionally stronger.  They too will become parents of teenagers.

Monica Murphy has captured the heart of the teenage world.  She brings their dramas to life and portrays them with complete realism.  She also brings the modern day family dynamics into the mix which makes this series become more than a young adult romance.  Each of the characters within this series has a story to tell, lessons to be learned, and maturity to be developed.  They are very real teenagers. I could easily see this series becoming a television series or movie.

41mlwrcz3rl5StarThe series begins with One Night.  This novella introduces the characters in this series.  It begins at a early summer party at Jordan Tuttle’s house.  What happens at the party changes the direction of every one of the characters lives in their senior year of high school.  Friendships are broken.  Lives are going in different directions.  New relationships begin to develop.  Social statuses are changing.  Individuality is starting to emerge.

One Night is the perfect opening to the Friends series.

***

51o4ef4czyl5StarJust Friends is the first book in the series.  It is loaded with drama.  A love triangle that tears apart three life long friends.  Each of these three people go separate directions in their senior year.  They are all struggling with the loss of their tight knit friendship as well as dealing with emotional feelings.  Their behaviors are destructive in many ways.  Their use of social media becomes a battle ground for bullying.  Rather than dealing with the situation that tore their friendships apart and their own emotional deficiencies, they make poor choices that could hurt them more.  They also begin to become individuals rather than molding themselves to fit within the friendship trio.

The end result has not played out.

One has chosen a new love interest that may not be the right person for her. His lack of commitment and notorious reputation are questionable.  On one hand he seems perfect but not quite right.  She is still pining for the boy that betrayed her. On a positive note, She has also developed a new friendship that is a good influence in her life.

The other girl has gone off the deep end and into the wild zone.  She is starving for attention.  She feels she has to be competitive with her former best friend.  At the same time she is reeling from the loss of the two friends that always cared about her.  She’s become the girl with the worst reputation in school.  She has isolated herself by her actions.

The boy in the middle has made very poor choices that led to losing a friend and losing the girl he has always wanted.  He let his hormones make his decisions.  Now he’s going through his senior year without his two best friends and is dating a girl he really doesn’t like.

The teenage drama was in full motion.  Where it will lead is questionable.  The semester has barely begun.

***

51sftfrael5Star+More Than Friends goes in another direction and focuses on two other characters within the Friends series.  This one features the popular football star that everyone wants to know and the shy band girl that was betrayed by her boyfriend and best friend.

They have both existed in different social worlds within high school.  While one has been the center of attention the other has content in her own social circle.  One seems like he has everything because he’s rich, popular, and has parental freedom.  The other seems like she has nothing because she’s smart, middle class, and a band geek.  The truth of the matter is she is more emotionally stable than he is.  She has a more rounded life.

After catching her boyfriend with her best friend, she is tossed into a new direction her senior year.  She has left band and is determined to become involved in other school activities.  The most popular boy in school wants to date her.  He is out of her social realm and has a very questionable reputation.  He’s determined to win her heart.  She’s afraid of giving him too much of herself.  She’s been hurt before and doesn’t know how to deal with his social status.

He has always kept himself separate from the school population.  Sure he’s the most popular guy but that is because he plays football and throws epic parties every week.  He’s never allowed anyone to get close to him.  Girls are expendable.  The guys from the team are just people he has to play nice with.  One girl has always had his attention and now she’s on his playing ground.  He is going to get the girl.  The problem is once he gets her can he keep her?  He doesn’t know how to play well with others.

I absolutely loved this book.  Both of these teenagers were dealing with very real issues in their lives.  They both lacked confidence within themselves.  They both had emotional maturing to do.  They both were perfect for one another but didn’t know how to open themselves up and become vulnerable.

Their story is unresolved…

I can’t wait to see what direction their lives go as the school year progresses.

Synopsis

Billionaire Caleb Blackstone lives in the glamorous world of wealth and success, with every material luxury. But the moment he sees Brooke Casterley, none of that matters. Caleb is filled with a raw, undeniable need that he can’t ignore…for a girl who is so completely different from everything and everyone he’s ever known.

Only Brooke isn’t looking for love. She knows all too well just how much damage the wrong guy can do. Still, what sane, broke British girl can resist the charms of an incredibly sexy, chivalrous billionaire? What starts as flirtation quickly turns into all-consuming passion. Nothing could have prepared her for the searing heat of Caleb’s touch—or just how much she craves him.

Their whirlwind romance is the stuff of high-society fantasy—but for every moment of pleasure, there is a cost. Past mistakes and tragedy shadow them both…and falling for him might be the kind of trouble she can’t afford.

Excerpt

I would give this thing two drinks max before I was outie.

Nodding and saying the right things, I shook hands with the colleagues who’d known my father and accepted condolences from others. I made a mental note of the people who’d made the effort to mention his name to me, and I would write them down with the event and date as soon as I got home.

I’d worked my way through the room, as I had been taught by my dad—by the best to ever work a roomful of potential deals—when I decided I’d accomplished what I’d set out to do tonight. It was time for me to go. After setting my glass down on an empty table, I started for the door . . . until I saw her.

Just like that. She appeared in my line of sight and I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

The beautiful girl from this morning at the Starbucks on Hereford Street.

I knew it was her because how could anyone forget those sexy boots? Her blonde hair wasn’t down like it had been this morning, though. She’d pulled it back into a sleek ponytail . . . but she was serving at this event? I’d seen her go into that design studio next to Starbucks. She probably had two jobs. Industrious . . . beautiful . . . sexy.

I quickly returned for my half-empty glass and snatched it up from the table. I suddenly felt like an appetizer or two.

She saw me approaching and moved closer with her tray. “What are these called?” I asked without sparing her tray a second glance. Bad move on my part, but I was too busy taking in her golden eyes and hair, and everything else I could now see up close. Perfect skin, dark lashes that framed spectacular eyes, and a scar along the hairline of the right side of her face. Something had hurt her at some point in the past, and I found it utterly insane that I was disturbed by it.

She rolled her pink lips together as if she was trying to suppress laughter. “Well, they’ve told me it’s something called a . . . meatball. Very unusual gourmet creation. You should try one. They’re said to be quite delicious.”

That voice of hers was . . . fucking beautiful.

“Okay.” I picked up a meatball and popped it in my mouth. Didn’t taste a thing. I could have been chewing slaughterhouse by-products and I wouldn’t have known. My brain had shut off everything except her beautiful voice.

“You are either messing with me or that blow to your head must have been devastating. I would wager you’ve had a meatball before.”

“I am.”

She lost her smile. “You are messing with me?”

“No, I am devastating—I mean devastated—by the blow to my head.” What in the mother fuck was I even saying to this girl? I sounded like Rain Man minus the IQ. I needed to stop talking.

“I’m sorry to hear that. It looks painful.”

“It doesn’t hurt me now.” I think I smiled and shook my head but couldn’t be sure. Just call me the village idiot because I knew I was acting like one. I did love the sound of her voice, though.

“Another rare and precious meatball?” She offered her tray and studied me this time. She had to be disgusted by my appearance and turned off by my behavior, but she didn’t show it if she was.

“Yes, please.” I took another meatball but I didn’t eat it. “You are British.”

“You are American,” she said with a fast wink, before turning away to serve other guests.

I watched her walk away from me and felt the pounding of my heart vibrating throughout my entire body.

Something had just happened to me.

I wasn’t completely sure what exactly, but I was crystal clear on the reason.

Her.

Tracey’s Review

Caleb Blackstone is American royalty. Descended from that Blackstone, the one that founded a little city called Boston, Caleb is living the life. Money, women, he’s just what you’d expect of a wealthy, successful man. But something’s missing, and, although Caleb isn’t quite sure what it is, he feels it. Brooke Casterly has known life on the other side of the coin. Granddaughter to the former housekeeper of Blackwater, she’s known security and love at the hands of her Nan, but she’s no stranger to pain and fear, either. She’s vowed never to give over her power to a man, ever again, and love is the absolute last thing on her mind. But something is missing, and, although she doesn’t know quite what it is, she feels it.

I still remember finding a little book called NAKED by an author that I’d never read before. An unbelievably sexy alpha man, utterly consumed with a woman that he’d hardly met. Heady stuff, and I was immediately in love with Raine Miller, the lady that wrote the book, and all the subsequent books, about one Ethan Blackstone, and those that made up his world. Well, I have to tell you, Raine has gone and outdone herself with FILTHY RICH, her newest book, and the first in her Blackstone Dynasty series.

I started reading FILTHY RICH, and, y’all, I could not put it down. I was in love with both Caleb and Brooke from the beginning. Raine has a way with words, to be sure, and she has written another pair of lovers that people will adore.

There is always such a depth of feeling in Raine’s books, from yearning, to sweetness, to passion, and, as a reader, I was swept right along with it. Caleb’s desire for Brooke is immediate, and it’s visceral, but it quickly becomes so much more. I have to say that, given that I am not a fan of speedy relationships or insta-love in my books, the flow of feelings and the speed with which they developed here made perfect sense, and just made the relationship between Caleb and Brooke feel more like kismet.

As with her other heroines, Brooke has a painful past. She’s suffered loss, and she’s suffered violence and pain at the hand of the person that she should have felt the safest with, and she’s emerged the stronger and savvier for it. She’s not some ingenue looking for her Prince Charming, and I think that her sass and take-no-crap attitude are part of what Caleb finds so refreshing and attractive about her.

I’m so glad that FILTHY RICH is just the first in this new series, because there are a LOT of folks that I will be looking forward to seeing get their HEAs. And, as for Caleb and Brooke, their story is a lovely, poignant, emotional 4.5 stars for me, and I am highly recommending that you get to know them very soon.

Rafe embraces his reputation with the ladies.  It’s not because he’a an egotistical sex god.  It’s because he is in love with a woman he can never touch.  He’s in love with his best friend and teammates little sister.  A woman he grew up with.  Her family embraced him as a kid and made them one of theirs.  He cannot betray the only people that ever cared for him.

Mia has lived in the shadows amongst the men in her life.  Her older brother and Rafe have been the center of attention all of her life.  Their hockey lessons, academic status, and hockey careers have been the forefront of her stepfather, Joe’s, attention.  It’s not that she wasn’t loved fiercely by these three men, she was put on a pedestal by them.  Now she has a phenomenal opportunity in her career that could change her future.  This opportunity is across the country in Hollywood, California.  She is going to have to leave D.C. and the people she has loved the most.  Before she leaves D.C. she fully intends on taking something else that she has always wanted.  She is going to have one night with Rafe Savage.

The old saying of ” be careful what you wish for” applies to Mia.  Her wish of one night with Rafe came true.  It was not enough.  Rate wants more but he wants it on his terms.  She wants her career and that doesn’t include Rafe.  Also keeping their relationship a secret from her father and brother doesn’t bode well.  It will destroy their entire family structure.  It could easily destroy the Rough Riders chance in the play offs.

Rafe is determined to keep Mia by his side.  Mia is determined to be independent.  These two were meant to be together.  It’s going to take a Dirty Score and some dirty fights to keep their relationship burning.

Skye Jordan wrote another fantastic book for the Rough Riders Hockey series.  I loved the forbidden best friend’s little sister relationship.  It was red hot, fun, and full of great characters.  The Rough Riders Hockey series has scored big with me.  I can’t wait to see who melts the ice next.

Joan Author PhotoSkye Jordan is a pseudonym for New York Times bestselling romantic suspense author Joan Swan. Skye’s novels are about enjoying that little wild streak we don’t let out often enough. About those fantasies we rarely get the opportunity to indulge. About stretching limits, checking out the dark side, and maybe even acting a little naughty. They’re about escape and fun and pleasure and romance. And, yes, even love, because while wicked-great sex is good, happily ever after with wicked-great sex is even better.

When she’s not writing, Skye loves to read, knit, craft, row, ride, and dabble in photography.

Robin’s Review

Kismet. Destiny. Fate. How do you know if you are on the path fate has planned for you? What if there is something far greater, far more powerful, just waiting to step in? This is a theme author Christine Brae explores in her new standalone novel titled In this Life, where we are able to experience the richness of Anna Dillon’s story.

Brae introduces us to Anna at a time in her life that is filled with sadness and strife, when she flees the drama of her home life for something much different in a small fishing village of Thailand. All Anna really wants is to forget the emotional pain, so she convinces her best friend, Dante Leola, to volunteer with her on a medical mission at an orphanage. It’s on the tsunami-ravaged beaches of Thailand, where Anna and Dante meet Jude Grayson, and all three of their lives become inextricably tied together.

In This Life is a contemporary romance and contemporary women’s literature rolled into one, a journey about friendship, loyalty and love which will captivate and hold your attention until the very last page has been turned. Brae’s words are full of wisdom, both heartbreaking and joyful, both healing and redemptive. It’s an epic adventure of two souls, destined to be together, even as life sees the two of them heading in different directions.

Each of the three primary characters has endearing qualities, which is probably why In This Life became a very emotional read for me. Anna is easy for me to relate to. She experiences growth as a character because of the difficulties that she faces in her life. But In This Life is not only about Anna. This story also concerns the two men who are on this journey with her – Dante and Jude. Anna has feelings that are unique to each man, and Brae’s writing made certain that I was able to experience her feelings and emotions.

Christine Brae’s writing is the very best feature of In This Life. In This Life is Brae’s fourth full-length novel. I’m being completely honest in my assessment when I say that I have never witnessed a more dramatic improvement in writing. Brae’s writing is no longer the writing of an author who is just getting her feet wet. It’s matured, become more polished and descriptive, visceral and full of wisdom. Brae’s descriptive writing was exceptional, assisting me with visualizing scenes in my head.

I would recommend In This Life based on the writing alone, but this story about finding your destiny is what makes this novel special. In This Life is a solid 5-star novel, and I’m adding it to my list of 2016 favorites!
