Genre: Historical Fiction

About Ribbons of Scarlet:

Ribbons of Scarlet is a timely story of the power of women to start a revolution—and change the world.

In late eighteenth-century France, women do not have a place in politics. But as the tide of revolution rises, women from gilded salons to the streets of Paris decide otherwise—upending a world order that has long oppressed them.

Blue-blooded Sophie de Grouchy believes in democracy, education, and equal rights for women, and marries the only man in Paris who agrees. Emboldened to fight the injustices of King Louis XVI, Sophie aims to prove that an educated populace can govern itself–but one of her students, fruit-seller Louise Audu, is hungrier for bread and vengeance than learning. When the Bastille falls and Louise leads a women’s march to Versailles, the monarchy is forced to bend, but not without a fight. The king’s pious sister Princess Elisabeth takes a stand to defend her brother, spirit her family to safety, and restore the old order, even at the risk of her head.

But when fanatics use the newspapers to twist the revolution’s ideals into a new tyranny, even the women who toppled the monarchy are threatened by the guillotine. Putting her faith in the pen, brilliant political wife Manon Roland tries to write a way out of France’s blood-soaked Reign of Terror while pike-bearing Pauline Leon and steely Charlotte Corday embrace violence as the only way to save the nation. With justice corrupted by revenge, all the women must make impossible choices to survive–unless unlikely heroine and courtesan’s daughter Emilie de Sainte-Amaranthe can sway the man who controls France’s fate: the fearsome Robespierre.

National Convention

Paris, France

December 1792

“There she is, the harlot . . .”

“La femme Roland . . .”

“Traitorous slut . . .”

The whispers followed me as I made my way across the floor, looking neither right nor left. It was the first time a woman had been called to address the Convention, and I’d dressed for the occasion as though it were an honor: a blue gown that foamed about my feet as I stalked to the bar, a white fichu pinned with my tricolor cockade, red ribbons twined through my hair. A revolutionary patriot, top to toe. When I turned to face the questions, I let my eyes travel, bold and confident, to the high bleacher seats where the radical Jacobins held court.

Before the proceedings could even begin, some heckler from their ranks called, “How do you answer the charge of treason, citizeness?”

I replied with calm contempt. “The charge is ludicrous, and all here know it.”

It was a smear job of the crudest kind: an unsavory informer reporting he had discovered a London conspiracy to restore the king, and that my husband and I were complicit. My husband had already been summoned to account for himself and had perhaps not done as well as he might: he couldn’t hide his indignation, and he became flustered when the tone turned sneering. I would not give my questioners a chance to sneer.

“The informer states clearly, Citizeness Roland, that you—”

“I did not summon him.” I spoke briskly, taking the reins before my questioner could bring down the whip and speed this interrogation to the pace my enemies wanted. This was going to go at my pace, not theirs. “From my files of letters I can see the man wrote to me, asking for an interview with Minister Roland. I receive dozens of such requests every week.”

“You do not deny you received the man?”

“He paid a brief call, and from his probing I concluded he was sent to sound us out about some scheme or other.” I smiled. “Or perhaps I was wrong. I am a woman and not skilled in these matters.”

The questioner took turns with his colleagues, trying to turn my words on me, trying to talk me in circles. As long as I had listened to politicians drone over my dinner table, I could talk anyone in circles. I shredded their accusations and stamped the shreds underfoot, feeling the color rise in my cheeks—not embarrassment, but the fierce heat of pride. Was this what Roland felt when he addressed the Convention? This rush of power that tingled the fingertips, the confidence that my words were deploying like obedient soldiers and the crowd sat in the palm of my hand? Why would anyone who had command of this floor ever leave it?

Finally, I was excused to the sound of ringing applause among the deputies, the charge dismissed in full, the honors of the session formally accorded to me. I looked from Robespierre to Danton to Marat with a wide bland smile as I glided out, and the smile became a beam as my husband drew me into the nearest empty hall.

“Thank goodness it’s over.” His face was creased with relief. “Let me take you home, calm your nerves.”

“My nerves are calm, and I can take myself home. You stay, speak with those who need reassuring.”

He kissed my forehead. “I hated seeing you up there,” he muttered, before rushing back inside.

He’d hardly gone before a low voice spoke behind me, prickling my skin. “I loved seeing you up there. You were born to it.”

I turned, smile draining away. The man who loved me stood feet planted wide, arms folded, dark hair rumpled—he must have been waiting to catch me alone. “Citizen,” I managed to say, not daring to put his name through my lips.

“You were brilliant,” he said quietly. “Brave as a lioness.” A voice of calm power for a man not yet thirty-three. Six years younger than I, what did that say about me? “They should have known better than to try to trap you in so crude a snare.”

“That shabby excuse for a conspiracy might have been crude, but it was real, even if we had no involvement.” I kept my voice brisk, turning the conversation to safer waters. “As long as the king lives, there will be plots to restore him. The matter will have to be dealt with.”

“The king is just a man, and a small one.”

“With a long shadow.”

We both smiled involuntarily. It had always been like that with us, the eager cut-and-thrust of our minds. “If you wish to speak to my husband . . .”

But the man who loved me took my hand.

“Manon, I honor Roland and support him always. But I am here for you.”

She wants more than just his forgiveness…

Excerpt:

“There’s an open booth over there,” Starla said, moving toward the back left of the bar.

I followed close behind, the thought of my soon-to-be-ordered wings making my stomach growl.

I was thinking how good a large draft beer would go with said wings, when I looked to the right and saw two gorgeous guys. They had matching grins and dark hair, and were laughing up at the woman who was delivering their food.

One looked very familiar…

Wes.

My stomach clenched as his gaze shifted and landed on me, and my breath held as I waited for his acknowledgement. When he turned back to the server instead, without so much as a glimmer of recognition, my heart fell.

I was right… he hated me.

Excerpt

“You can call me Eli.”

She swallows hard. “I don’t actually think I can.”

“Why not?” I force my gaze away from her mouth.

The second our eyes meet, she averts her attention to her feet. “Because you’re half of the Hathaway-Hawkins duo.”

This is a new one to me. “I’m divorced.”

“I know. I …” She makes an attempt to look at me, but her attention shifts to my temple then maybe my ear. “I mean you’re a brilliant doctor, and Dr. Hathaway is too—so brilliant. God, she’s just phenomenal. Like there are no words. But still … you change the lives of young children. You save them. You’re what every young person entering the medical field can only dream of becoming. You’ve earned the title. I can’t call you by your name. It’s too personal. I don’t know … almost intimate.”

She has Julie on a really high pedestal. Me? Down a few pegs. Sounds about right for my life at the moment. It’s not that Julie doesn’t deserve to be on the pedestal. No matter how much I hate her, I still love her. And her skills as a pediatric plastic surgeon are unmatched. She deserves Dorothy’s admiration.

But I don’t want to talk about medicine, accolades, and saving lives. I know … I know … how terrible of me. Sorry, but I need something for myself. Something personal and maybe a little selfish.

Definitely intimate.

“I don’t need a babysitter for Roman.”

She jerks her head back, giving me her full attention, eyes squinted, gaze locked to mine. “What?”

I trap my top lip between my teeth, drowning in coconuts as my heart races, sending ample blood to all regions of my body. God … I just want—need—to kiss her.

“Oh jeez …” She shakes her head, closing her eyes for a breath. “You invited me to dinner to … flirt.” Her eyes open to their widest point.

A tiny laugh escapes me. I can’t help it. Everything about this woman feels like a rebirth. “I invited you to dinner because Roman really likes you. And I just can’t thank you enough for all that you’ve done for him. You’re so generous.”

Gah! I suck at this!

What is my problem? Yes. The answer is yes! Yes, Dorothy, I invited you over to flirt, maybe even kiss. And other things …

“Oh.” She takes a step backward, stumbling a bit as the front door catches her, and more embarrassment tints her cheeks. “Well, now I feel stupid. Yes, of course you invited me here because Roman likes me. Duh. Now I just look like an idiot for assuming you wanted to flirt with me. And really, no need to thank me. My generosity is selfish. It makes me feel good to do nice things. That’s all. And really, you’ve bought me coffee and made me dinner again. It’s like I should be thanking you again. But that’s probably weird. So … I’ll just go now.”

Really, really weird shit goes through my mind as she fidgets. Dr. Hawkins is nowhere to be found. Neither is Roman’s dad. Raging-puberty-hormones Eli Hawkins invades my head—both of them really. And I just want to kiss Dorothy. That’s the PG version of my thoughts. Most of them are R-rated. Worse than the R-rating. All I can think about are the ways Dorothy and I can be generous with each other, leading to never-ending thank-you’s that don’t involve stationary, replacement scrubs, superhero capes, pasta dinners, lunch boxes … or clothing.

“Should we call it even? No more thank-you’s,” I suggest.

“Okay.” She lifts her gaze, eyes going a little cross-eyed like her focus is centered on the bridge of my nose.

“Okay.” I release a slow breath, but it does very little to relax all of my body. “Can I ask your age?” I’m not sure why I’ve been so chicken about asking her age. I think it worries me that she’s too young, and I’ll feel like a dirty old man having really inappropriate thoughts about her.

“I’m thirty. Why?”

“You just look young.”

“I wear massive amounts of sunscreen.”

I nod slowly.

Just kiss her, you big chicken!

What if she doesn’t want to be kissed by me? Or flirt with me? I internally laugh at the memory of her comment and at myself for being just as awkward. Why does something so simple have to be so complicated?

“I have a forty-five-minute drive home.”

And school the next day. Where is my head?

Oh, that’s right …

“Of course. I’m sorry. I lost track of time.”

“Okay.” She smiles.

I love her okay’s. They feel like more than the average okay.

“I’ll walk you out.”

“Have you not closed all of your rings?” She holds up her wrist, signaling to her watch.

I chuckle. “All rings were closed hours ago.”

“We could track each other. Share our rings. Did you know that?”

Rings. Kisses. Trips to the on-call room for sex.

For the love of God … get your shit together, Elijah!

“Never mind. That’s weird.” She shakes her head, rolling her eyes at herself just before opening the door and scurrying ten steps ahead of me. Her pace gains momentum with the hill of my driveway.

My long strides catch up to her at the bottom of it. She looks both ways and bolts across the street to her car, clicks the locks, and opens her door.

“Goodnight!”

“Dorothy Mayhem … you’re killing me.”

She turns just before ducking into the driver’s seat.

“What do you mean?”

Resting my hands on my hips, I drop my chin in defeat and stare at my untied gray canvas shoes. “What if I did ask you to dinner tonight to … flirt?” I glance up, digging my teeth into my bottom lip on a slight cringe.

Her body remains stoic as her eyes shift from side to side, like she’s been caught on a hidden camera. “Well … then I wore the wrong outfit.” She refuses to look me in the eye.

“I think you look amazing.”

“Yes. But this is a playdate outfit. Maybe even one I’d wear to apply for a babysitter position. It’s fun, but wholesome. Practical and safe.”

I just want to spend one day in her head. Everything about her fascinates the hell out of me. The curiosity gives me such a high.

“Tell me about your flirting outfit.”

“Well …” She clears her throat, keeping her focus on the big hill leading out of my development. And of course … her cheeks are perfectly flushed as she talks to the wind. “Since Romeo was involved, I would have chosen my red dress with white stripes. It hits just below my knees, but it’s strapless. And I would have worn my blue cardigan with it and matching blue wedge sandals with straps that tie around my ankles. Flirty … but appropriate for young eyes.”

“And if Roman wouldn’t have been here tonight?” I stare at the side of her head, wondering if she’ll look at me again before driving home.

She narrows her eyes. “I would have taken off the cardigan after you invited me into your house.”

The picture she paints in my head does all kinds of wicked things to me. Why imagining her in a striped strapless dress has such a physical effect on me is a mystery. It’s not like she suggested showing up wearing nothing but high heels and a trench coat. Dorothy Mayhem possesses her own brand of seduction, and I’m completely entangled in every part of it.

“And in this scenario, would you have kissed me after I walked you to your car?”

She turns completely red. I feel certain even her toes hidden in those blue shoes have to be red. “You’re making fun of me.”

Her comment knocks me back a good ten steps, even if my body remains right next to her. Why would she say that?

5+Star

Michel’s Review

Jewel E. Ann is not only one of my all time favorite writers but she is also one of the most versatile authors in the romance genre. All of her novels seem to combine several sub-genres into an entertaining and emotional reading experience that readers remember long after the last page has been read. I predict that Perfectly Adequate is going to touch many readers in a very personal way.

The best way to describe this novel is the full “human experience” in all of it’s glorious imperfections that make it absolutely wondrous !

Dr. Elijah Hawkins has experienced the worst kind of heartbreak when he and his wife divorced. His perfect marriage fell apart in an instance when his wife decided she no longer wanted to be married. There wasn’t any reason other than she needed to be someone else rather than the person she had been all her life. She needed to change her life completely. The only thing that didn’t change was her love for their young son. Now Elijah is dealing with heartbreak, trying to figure out what he did wrong so that he can fix it. He’s a healer and he wants to heal his broken marriage until he meets  the hospital’s patient transporter Dorothy Mayhem. Dorothy is a ray of sunshine in his gloomy world. The trouble is that he doesn’t know how to date and wooing her isn’t easy. Dorothy is special because she is on the autism spectrum. Her life is balanced by her lists, her sense of order, and her unique personality. Just because she moves through life on her own specific terms does not mean she can’t be a lover, a partner, a friend, or a parent. She just has to do it at her pace.

Elijah loves everything about Dorothy. He’s not put off by autism and he’s not put off by her peculiar habits. He finds her quirks endearing and values her honesty. Her capacity to love with all of her being makes his world a better place.

The ex-wife is starting to see what she lost and wants her husband back. Can Dorothy sacrifice her love for Elijah and his son so that they can rebuild their family. The choice may not be Dorothy’s at all. They all have to listen to their hearts and stay true to themselves. They are all a part of the human spectrum.

This novel was a not only a beautiful romance but also a beautiful showcase of humanity. I highly recommend reading this Perfectly Adequate by Jewel E. Ann.

Release Blitz: Johny by J.A. Huss – Bossy Brothers – Book 2

Johnny
J.A. Huss
(Bossy Brothers, #2)
Publication date: September 26th 2019
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

She wasn’t supposed to be the princess I wasn’t looking for.

When my father ‘died’ five years ago I took over the ‘family business’. But when I say business, I really mean secret society. Or cult. Or militia. Hell, let’s keep it simple and call it the mob.

It’s just not that mob.

It’s much darker, much dirtier, and much more dangerous than any old everyday mob.

And I was perfectly fine with my role in life for a long time. But now my brothers are involved and I need to get them out.

Enter Megan Machette.

When I found her helpless, nearly-naked, and chained to a wall on an island prison I had no intention of being her Prince Charming. But then I found out she had a dirty, dark, dangerous secret that could solve all my family problems.

I was just going to use her. Play her. Tell her everything she wanted to hear.

I never planned on baring my secrets to her in a midnight confession and I certainly never expected her to see past the dark filth inside my soul and find the man underneath.

But she did.

She wasn’t supposed to be the princess I wasn’t looking for.

But she is.

And now I will do anything—even use her evil secret to take down thousands of people—to save my brothers and get what I want.

Her.

Bossy Brothers: Johnny features a prince saving his princess from a life of hell, one or ten romantic gestures from a tattooed bad boy, swimming with glowing dolphins in the Bahamas, and secrets so deep everyone almost drowns. Bossy Brothers: Johnny is book three in the series and can be read alone but should be read in order.

EXCERPT:

MEGAN

“How come you don’t mind when I say ‘cock?’”

He leans in, soft mouth nibbling my ear, and whispers, “Because a dirty mouth isn’t the same thing as dirty talking. I really like the dirty talk. And if you’re really sincere about asking me why now, why you? Well, then let me take this opportunity to convince you my offer is well thought out and real.”

My mouth is open. My heart is racing. My nipples are tight and the sweet spot between my legs is throbbing. I suck in a breath and hold it.

“I want to untie that little string bikini I bought for you this afternoon, throw it out to sea, wrap your legs around my middle, stick my thick, hard cock up inside you, and then fuck you slowly in the light of the moon.”

I breathe out. “We might drown.”

He bites my earlobe. His feet making underwater waves as he keeps us afloat.

“Sometimes the price of victory is high. But I promise you, it won’t end in drowning. All you have to do is say yes.”

I want to say yes. I wanted him to make this move last night. I thought he would make this move last night. So why am I hesitating?

Maybe it’s because he’s thrown me some curveballs today. Starting with all that chastising about swearing, then the uncharacteristic self-doubt in the restaurant, then he changed the plan and gave me presents… and tied that ribbon around my wrist like he was claiming me as his.

Jesus Christ. I’m delusional.

But all that does actually add up to something and it could be this… gesture.

Or offer. Or whatever it is he’s doing.

It doesn’t add up.

“Or,” he says, his fingers tugging on one of the strings holding my bottoms on until it comes loose, “you could just tell me no when you want me to stop, if that’s the way you play submit.”

“Submit?” I laugh. But his hand is already tugging on the other string. And the next thing I know I’m not wearing bottoms anymore.

They’re floating free somewhere down below me. A thing of the sea now.

He just keeps going. His hands reach up to the rhinestone clasp between my breasts, opening it in one swift, well-practiced move, and they’re free, his palms squeezing them tight until I let out a small moan.

“Tell me no,” he whispers into my ear. “Because unless you tell me no, I’m gonna keep going like it’s a yes.”

I bite my lip, but I don’t say no.

Then his open mouth is on mine. His lips soft, but somehow still demanding and punishing. Both hands come up to my face to hold me there. Captive in his kiss.

We start to sink, and I struggle away, my hands and feet treading water to keep us afloat. But his hands drop down to my thighs, gripping them tight as he opens me up. Immediately, I press my knees around his middle. His fingers tug on his board shorts, and then his cock is between my open legs. Pressing, pushing, insisting on being inside me.

“Hold on to me,” he whispers past my lips, our mouths still kissing.

And I do. Desperately. My arms circle his neck and my legs circle his hips. Giving him permission to enter me fully.

It’s the slowest fuck I’ve ever experienced. There’s barely any friction. There’s no forceful pushing and thrusting. There’s just not enough resistance in the water for a hard fuck like that.

But I don’t need any of that right now. My body is hot, and alive, and begging for more. And even though he’s not giving me more, he has no more to give while we’re in the ocean like this, I don’t really need it. Every small movement excites me. Every brush of his lips against mine thrills me. And when his hand on my hip lowers down the curve of my ass and presses between my legs, I’m almost embarrassed at how wonderful that feels.

I gasp a little. We’re no longer kissing. But our foreheads are pressed together. Our breathing ragged and matched. His feet kicking underwater to keep us afloat.

I let go of him and drop my fingers down between our bodies, pressing against the hard muscles of his stomach, until my fingers flip over so I can play with myself.

Johnny leans in and bites my neck. I gasp, and he pulls back, kissing it softly. But then he bites again, and again, and again until some unknown, never-before-experienced feeling of lust and desire fills my body and…

“Oh, shit,” I moan softly. “Shit.”

I come on my fingers. His hard cock barely inside me.

I bury my head into his neck, embarrassed. Not really understanding how that even happened.

He leans over on his side. One hand gripping my waist, holding us together, the other dragging us towards the shore.

I don’t even know what’s happening and I’m starting to feel uncomfortable and weird about what I just did when I realize he’s standing on the sandy ocean floor, lifting me up. Carrying me through the crashing waves to the beach.

He lays me down, half in, half out of the rolling surf. His body covers mine, his hands on both my cheeks once again, his mouth open, tongue inside me.

Then he lets go of my face, grabs both knees with both hands, opens me back up, and slips inside.

And this time his cock—still rock hard—refuses to fuck me slowly.

“I fucking hate you, you know that?” His words come out a
taut, restrained, and he stares straight into my eyes, delivering the blow. I
guess I’m becoming immune to his antics, because I just nod my head, biting
back the smile that desperately wishes to break free.
Maybe you do. But not nearly as much as you wish…
“And you’re still going to give me the most precious thing
you’ve got right now, even knowing I’ve got no love for you? Knowing I don’t
even like you, not even a little bit?”
I roll my eyes. If he’s trying to scare me away, to make me
second guess myself, it’s not going to work. And if that’s the
case, I think that speaks more to his own shitshow of feelings and not being
able to sort through them, than anything I’ve done.
“Steph says sex angry sex is the best. I’m betting hate sex
might be even better…” I shoot him a cocky smirk.
“How will you know? You have nothing to compare it to…”
“Not now, maybe. But I will one day.”

Bad Apple is the first book in an all new duet by Gemini Jensen. A new author to me, this book caught my attention from the cover and the blurb alone. Classified as a bully romance this book was pleasantly surprising and enjoyable to read.

Jensen has created quite the lead characters for this story. Two very different characters but they are so perfect for one another…even if they don’t want to admit it. Their chemistry is off the charts!!!

Ransom Creed is the ultimate bad boy to the core, and he’s got everything a bad boy should have going for him: Hot Body, Tattoos for days, Lip Piercing, Fighter, Rocker, and let’s not forget a complete a**hole. He’s also got the need for revenge running through his veins.

True St. Clair is the all-American girl stuck in a small town. She’s the daughter of the local sheriff, great student and captain of the cheerleading team. Raised to be prim and proper by parents who are more concerned with appearances, True feel trapped and isolated.

When Ransom finds himself uprooted from his life in Nashville and living in the small country town his dad grew up in, he’s set with one goal in mind… getting his revenge on the St. Clair family. Now attending Warren High with True, he makes it his personal mission to torment her at every turn. However, what he doesn’t anticipate is True and her strong spirit, that will not break easily.

I really liked this book. I felt the characters were interesting and had depth to them. The storyline kept my attention. It surprisingly had quite a bit of suspense which had me guessing throughout the story as to what was to come next… and that ending!!!!

This is a book worth checking out! I am impatiently waiting for book 2!!! Cannot wait for the conclusion to Ransom and True’s story!

longer than she should be able to admit, stealing her mom’s books and returning

“Forest Park Academy is my queendom, and with my sisters by my side you will bend to our will.” Cerulean Tremont

Royal Blue by Megan Lowe is book one in the Sovereign of Savannah Series. The first of four books, this book follows Cerulean Tremont.

I must say that I was very happy with this book. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and the writing was just superb. The characters were developed and complexed and the story was interesting and kept my attention.

Cerulean Tremont rules Forest Park Academy. With her sisters, she helps keep social class in order and bows to no one. She is strong and fierce, very determined and driven to pave the way that women can be powerful in the world. She’s a perfectionist with her studies and very loyal and protective of her sister. She seems to have no weaknesses… or does she?!?!

Harley St. James is the new guy. He’s the star quarterback and the son of the principal. He’s athletically talented, academically gifted, and extremely drool worthy. When he catches a glimpse of the ice queen herself, he’s done for. Determined to know more about the beautiful blonde with jade green eyes, Harley will go where no high school guy has dared to go before and will stop at nothing to prove that Cerulean is meant to be with him.

I loved that you have this female character that is so strong, yet so flawed. On the outside it looks like she has the world in the palm of her hands but what’s going on inside her head is so complex. I loved the sisterhood that was represented. I loved that this book felt like a true high school setting, where most times it takes place in high school, but you never get that vibe. I love the sports element and you can tell the author did the research or is a sports fan. I loved Harley!!! I just really enjoyed this book.

I highly recommend checking this story out, 4.5 stars!

Wrapped Up in You, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Jill Shalvis.

It’s love. Trust me.

After a lifetime on the move, Ivy Snow is an expert in all things temporary—schools, friends, and way too many Mr. Wrongs. Now that she owns a successful taco truck in San Francisco and an apartment to call home, Ivy’s reinvented life is on solid ground. And she’s guarded against anything that can rock it. Like the realities of a past she’s worked hard to cover up. And especially Kel O’Donnell. Too hot not to set off alarms, he screams temporary. If only his whispers weren’t so delightfully naughty and irresistible.

Kel, an Idaho sheriff and ranch owner, is on vacay, but Ivy’s a spicy reason to give his short-terms plans a second thought. Best of all, she’s a tonic for his untrusting heart, burned once and still in repair. But when Ivy’s past intrudes on a perfect romance, Kel fears that everything she’s told him has been a perfect lie. Now, if only Ivy’s willing to share, Kel will fight for a true love story.

Excerpt:

He held her gaze for a long beat before taking the bag and unzipping it, finding the dishes she’d put together for him. “Not tacos,” he said in surprise.

“Making tacos is my job,” she said. “This was for something else.”

“And what’s that?”

“An apology for being … grumpy last night.”

“You weren’t.”

She gave him a get real look and he smiled. “Okay, maybe a little. But it was understandable. You’d just gotten an unfortunate and unfair surprise.” He gently tilted her face up to his. “You doing okay this morning?”

“Yes,” she said. “Of course.”

“Of course,” he repeated and shook his head. “Smart, tough, and resilient,” he murmured, his gaze on her face.

Now it was her turn to smile. “Some might say stubborn, impulsive, and doesn’t know when to quit.”

“Yeah,” he said. “But I find those things very attractive.”

Honestly, she didn’t know how to take half the things he said. They made her feel both terrified and exhilarated at the same time. “You’re a strange man.”

“So I’ve been told.” He looked over the food. “You poison any of it?”

“No, and only because I’d never waste food.” But to prove it, she grabbed the fork she’d packed and took a bite of her eggs. “Mmm,” she moaned before she could stop herself, but hey, she’d worked out and been on the move ever since, and she was starving. Plus, she made damn good eggs if she said so herself.

Again their eyes met, and that now familiar spark went right through her. She wanted him. Quite badly, if going off her racing pulse meant anything. He was so … what, exactly? Steady? Tough? Intense and yet somehow easy-going, not to mention also extremely easy on the eyes?

“You didn’t have to cook something special for me,” he said, sounding touched.

“You helped me last night. I repay my debts.”

“I didn’t do it so you’d feel indebted to me,” he said and cocked his head as he studied her for a beat. “Someday you’re going to have to tell me about the apparent assholes who’ve been in your life to make you so distrusting of me.”

“Oh, don’t flatter yourself. It’s not just you. I don’t trust anyone. And it wasn’t just me paying back a debt,” she admitted. “I wanted to cook for you.” And because that made his smile warm, which in turn made something inside her warm as well, she shrugged and backed up a few steps, needing breathing room. “I also wanted to thank you for your help,” she said, feeling annoyingly awkward as he shoved stacks of plans to one side of the table and started pulling everything else out of her bag with a deep male hum of pleasure when he caught sight of the pancakes.

“Are those blueberry?” he asked very seriously.

She nodded.

“Fair warning, if they’re as good as the eggs, I really am going to drop to my knees and ask you to marry me.”

That startled a laugh out of her. “Fair warning, if you drop to your knees, I’m going to use my considerable kickboxing skills on you.”
