Release Blitz + 5 Star Review + 2017 Favorite: The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo

The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo

By Taylor Jenkins Reid

Buy: Amazon / B & N / ITunes / Kobo

Synopsis:

In this entrancing novel “that speaks to the Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor in us all” (Kirkus Reviews), a legendary film actress reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

“Heartbreaking, yet beautiful” (Jamie Blynn, Us Weekly), The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is “Tinseltown drama at its finest” (Redbook): a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it costs—to face the truth.

Robin’s Review

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Whereas a romance novel focuses solely on a romantic relationship and the happily ever after, women’s fiction tends to focus more on a woman’s journey. I’ve personally found women’s fiction to be a more diverse and unique genre. Consider, for example, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I’ve honestly never read anything like it! The latest novel from Taylor Jenkins Reid is a fascinating glimpse of Old Hollywood and the sacrifices required to become a movie star.

With one phone call, Monique Grant receives the opportunity of a lifetime. Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo plans to auction off 12 of her most memorable gowns to raise money for a cause, and she specifically requests an interview with Monique, a no-name journalist with Vivant magazine. Monique hopes this interview will boost her career, but she soon discovers Evelyn wants more than just a single interview. The aging, reclusive actress is finally ready to open up about her glamorous career – the sacrifices that she made and the secrets that she kept on her way to super-stardom.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is told from dual points of view, alternating between characters Monique Grant and Evelyn Hugo. For the most part, Evelyn’s point of view consists of the retelling of her life’s story. I found Evelyn’s story fascinating! Her life was dramatic, glamorous and even scandalous at times. Now in her late 70’s, Evelyn shares how a teenager from Hell’s Kitchen in New York City became a successful actress in Hollywood, the story behind each of her seven husbands, and the cunning and cutthroat sacrifices she made on behalf of herself and others.

A good portion of Monique’s point of view involves the process of interviewing Evelyn Hugo. Monique listens to what Evelyn has to say, but she also asks her good questions – questions I might ask if I was the person doing the interview. From the beginning of the novel, we are aware of events going on in Monique’s day-to-day life. Readers who love a little mystery in their novels will find it in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. As the story begins to unwind, it becomes more and more obvious Monique and Evelyn are connected in some mysterious way. Reid certainly had my curiosity piqued with hints of intrigue!

The author reeled me in with great descriptive writing – including lifelike descriptions of Evelyn, the movie star’s unique beauty, even descriptions of photographs taken of Evelyn throughout the years. I was impressed with Reid’s writing because I found I could picture things in my mind throughout the novel. The character dialogue in this novel is outstanding! Sometimes eye-opening, always clever, the dialogue captivated me and kept me glued to the pages of the book. An interesting feature of this novel are the articles written about Evelyn that are placed between each chapter. These articles are an ingenious way to let readers know what Hollywood reporters think about events going in Evelyn’s life.

Although I enjoyed Monique’s role in this story, it’s Evelyn Hugo who really steals the show! Evelyn is an extraordinary character who experiences all kinds of character growth! The author depicts this aspiring movie star perfectly – alluring, wealthy, charming, and ruthless in the pursuit of fame and fortune. I was also entertained by the stories behind each of Evelyn’s seven husbands – Ernie, Don, Mick, Rex, Harry, Max and Robert.

Readers who are familiar with Taylor Jenkins Reid will probably find The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo unlike any other book the author has written to date. But, just as I did, I hope those who read this novel will find it equally delightful! Taylor Jenkins Reid has earned my 5 star rating for The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and I count this novel one of my 2017 favorites!

Excerpt

Aryas knew her.

He knew what she liked.

He knew how she played.

He knew exactly what would make her squirm in her seat.

And he knew precisely how long it had been since she’d had her kink.

“You’re throwing down the gauntlet,” she accused quietly.

“You feel like picking up the glove?” he shot back, shaking the piece of paper at her.

She stared into Aryas’s eyes.

No strings.

Anything she wanted to do to get him off.

When he was done with her, he’d vanish from her life.

Her gaze dropped to the paper.

“Be you, and we’ll make it interesting, lay five grand on that fucker, he’ll give you one go and then he’ll move on,” Aryas pushed, but it was a dare.

She looked back at him.

A dare.

Yes, he knew her.

“No reflection on you and your skills, which are sublime, my beautiful baby.” He grinned wicked grin. “Just that this guy is unbreakable. There’s no edge for him any Domme can get anywhere near to push him off and that’s what he’s looking for. Being taken to the farthest edge and shoved right the fuck over.”

Taken to the farthest edge.

Evangeline was not into that. She wasn’t into extreme. Not like many who were into that in the life.

No, the edges she coasted were exactly what Aryas wasn’t quite saying, but she read this guy couldn’t handle.

Unless he had the right Mistress to lead the way.

Damn it all, she was getting wet.

“Five grand?” she snapped.

Aryas pressed his lips together and she was too peeved to get more peeved that he did it to suppress his amusement.

He unpressed them to confirm, “Five grand. But Leenie, babe, just to get it straight, he walks away from you at first meet, we’re even. It’s only if you get a crack at him the bet is on.”

She lifted her nose at the same time she snatched the paper from his hand, declaring, “He won’t walk away.”

“He might,” Aryas said gently, and his sudden loss of humor and careful tone made her focus on him again. “Beware of that. He’s done it before. In some ways, he doesn’t give a shit about anything. In some ways, he can be frustratingly choosy.”

“If I want him, he walks away, I’ll still get him,” she announced.

Michel’s Review

The first thing I want to say is that when Kristen Ashley picks up a pen or strokes a keyboard complete magic happens.

An alpha sub and a soft hearted woman who is a hardcore Domme shouldn’t work, right? Most alpha men are pure Doms at heart and want total control in every aspect of their lives.  But think about the BDSM world, it’s all about control and trust.  The real power lays in the hands of the sub and how far they are willing to go. It’s a Dom’s or Domme’s responsibility to handle that trust with complete competent care. With that thought in mind, Kristen Ashley really tapped into the real idealism behind BDSM as well as the real kink.

Branch was a ghost long before he actually died.  He’s been living off the grid of humanity for years waiting to take his final revenge for the death of his last drop of humanity he still possessed.  He has lived under the radar and gone through countless Domme’s because none of them can take him to the farthest edge, the edge he desperately needs to fall over. It’s not about sexual satisfaction but rather about validating that he is still physically alive even though he is emotionally dead.  When the owner of the Honey Club offers up his Queen Bee Dominatrix, he’s leary.  He’s seen Evangeline in action.  He respects her work but even she can’t take him where he needs to go.  She’s experienced the bad side of a scene gone wrong and is damaged.  She’s been out of the world for over a year.  How can a tiny snippet of a damaged woman break the unbreakable?

Everyone thought Evangeline was broken, completely damaged after a scene went violently wrong.  They underestimated her willpower, her strength, and her courage.  She has been biding her time, healing her wounds and broken heart, and concentrating on building her life outside of the club.  Even though she hasn’t stepped foot in the Honey Club in over a year, she’s ready to become who she was before it went terribly wrong. When her friend and owner of the Honey Club offers her the perfect sub, she’s ready to crack her whip.  When she meets the unbreakable sub, she’s even more determined. He may walk out on her but she is going to have the last word.

What begins as a battle of wills and excessive need turns into something neither one of them anticipated.  It’s more than achieving the ultimate sexual satisfaction, it’s about learning to live a complete satisfying life.  Pushing Brock to the furthest edge is bringing him back to the land of the living.  Accepting an alpha sub in her heart is more than accepting who she is, it’s about accepting a whole life instead of a fractured one.

With the stroke of the pen or keyboard, Kristen Ashley brought her magic.  She made a hardcore BDSM book a beautiful romantic experience.  It brought all the kink a book like this needs while also bringing all the heart a romance reader expects.  I am amazed by this woman’s ability to create magic on the pages.

About Kristen Ashley:

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorizeand she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Release Blitz + 5 Star Review Review: Bitch Slap by J. Kenner

Bitch Slap

By J. Kenner

Buy: Amazon

*****

The first time I met her I wanted to slap her.

The second time, I knew I had to have her.

As for the third time, a gentleman doesn’t tell.

So I guess it’s a good thing I’m no gentleman … right?

Let’s get this out of the way, right off the bat: I love women.

I love the way they look. The way they smell. The way they feel. Especially the way they feel. And I’ve pretty much made it my mission to give each and every woman who shares my bed the ride of her life.

Then I met her. Bitchy as hell and completely uninterested in me. And damned if I didn’t want her. Crave her. I told myself I only wanted to tame her. That it was all about the challenge.

I never expected to break through that ice queen exterior and find the softness underneath. Never expected how wild she’d be between the sheets or the way she’d cry my name with such sincere intensity when I totally rocked her world.

Most of all, I never expected to fall for her.

But I did.

And the question is, now that I know I want her, how the hell do I go about keeping her?

Michel’s Review

I love it when one of my favorite authors jumps outside of the world they created but still maintains the flavor while adding a new spices to make it all the more tastier.  Although Bitch Slap by J. Kenner is not a Stark International novel, it is still loosely a part of that Stark world but with new faces, new industries, new plots, and a bonus of some of the Stark cast playing a very minor background roles.

Pierce Blackwell, part owner of Blackwell-Lyon Security, is dedicated to building the new business in Austin.  His mistress is his business.  He doesn’t do relationships, he never sees a woman twice, and he never puts himself in a situation that would require any kind of commitment (other than his business).  He is a commitment phobe and wears the banner with pride.

When an anonymous hook up through the 2Nite app turns into a complete disaster, it leaves Pierce Blackwell in an odd predicament.  First it leaves him dateless for the night. Second it leaves him intrigued with Jez Stuart, who quite easily put him in his place.  Thirdly, it is a great opportunity to land a great job that could lead to other great jobs in the future.  What’s a guy to do?  Find Jez Stuart, save the day, secure a contract, and flirt endlessly until she lands in his bed.

Austin meets Hollywood.  Hollywood takes over Austin.  Jez and Pierce finally stop to smell the roses and finally see that the pastures are greener on the other side.  Getting to that point is a pure delight.  They are getting a Bitch Slap by J. Kenner with a little help from some of their Stark friends.

This book came as a complete surprise.  I was immediately hooked and could not put this book down until it was finished.  It was loaded with good humor, the right amount of angst, and some very sexy groveling. This book was completely different from the Stark books.  It had a lighter feel and was more playful.  J. Kenner has a new cast of characters begging for their own page time.  I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Michel’s Review
Looking for an angsty rockstar romance mixed with sweet southern charm?  The Resurrection of Dylan McAthie by Nancee Cain is the perfect book to rock your heart southern style.
***
Dylan McAthie’s world has imploded.  His professional life and personal life has collided and left him wounded mentally and physically.  He has returned home to Alabama to heal after a serious car accident and life altering events.  Little does he realize that sometimes the healing process, both physically and emotionally, is more painful than the actual injury. Facing his past and redirecting his future is more difficult than his climb to fame.
***
Nineteen year old Jennifer Adams has led a sheltered life.  She is the daughter of a prominent minister in the Birmingham area and has had to live by a strict moral code. When the opportunity to become a personal nurse to her former neighbor, Dylan McAthie, arises, she jumps at the chance.  It’s her time to gain a little independence from her father and learn to make her own life choices.  She never imagined that her patient would be as moody and difficult as he was.  She remembers the sweet older boy who was kind and compassionate.  She doesn’t recognize this jaded and bitter man Dylan has become.
***
Both Dylan and Jennifer are searching for something more in their lives although neither really knows what that something is.  Dylan’s no longer a young man enchanted with fame and the glamorous life style.  Jennifer has always done what’s right and toed the line.  She’s trying to find where she fits in life.  Everything she thought she wanted in life doesn’t seem like quite enough.  She wants to make her own choices even if they are the wrong ones.
***
This is more than the typical rock star romance.  This is the story of man who ran from his roots only to discover that those roots are the foundation of the man he wants to be.  This is a story of a young woman finding herself and learning to reach out for what she wants in life.  For both of them there are hard lessons to learn but together they may learn something new about life.  They both will learn the true meaning of love, the importance of family, and the healing power of forgiveness.
***
Once again Nancee Cain delivered an emotional novel that taps into the complicated core of humanity.  I would highly recommend reading The Resurrection of Dylan McAthie.

Michel’s Review

Once again Bella Jewel has stunned me and held me captive with her latest romantic suspense novel.  The Watcher had me on the edge of my seat.  It kept me guessing as the danger elevated one frightening moment at a time.

Marlie Jacobson was the only victim to survive the serial killer known as The Watcher.  Her mother exploited her frightful experience and made her a victim in another way.  For the past seven years she has tried very hard to overcome the nightmares and fear.  She is always looking over her shoulder.  She won’t ever let her guard down again.  As for her mother, she has left her behind in her ill gotten mansion, and moved to a remote town in the mountains.  She works as a waitress in a small diner and lives a life of solitude.  She’s finally made peace with her life and accepts the burdens she has to carry.  The Watcher is dead and that experience is behind her.  Or so she thought.  When her younger sister comes up missing she knows the Watcher is back.  Her instincts are screaming at her but no one is taking her seriously.

When Marlie hires Kenai Michelson to help her find her sister she knows she’s hit another road block.  Rather than believing her, Kenai has his own opinions and they are not good.  When the reality of the situation becomes quite clear and Marlie is in danger, he’s finally fully on board.

They thought the Watcher was dead.  Has he resurrected or is there a copycat killer on the loose? He has come back to finish off Marlie Jacobson? Will she be a victim or once again escape his grasp?

Read the book!  It will give you chills and have you on the edge of your seat.  Bella Jewel has created a bone chilling story that will have you looking over your shoulder.

Release Day Blitz + 5-Star Review: Real Sexy by Meghan March

Real Sexy AMAZON

In Nashville, country stars are a dime a dozen.

I swore I’d never get caught up with one, but Boone Thrasher made a liar out of me.

I said I’d never put my heart on the line, but he didn’t ask before he stole it.

Now we’re facing my worst fears, and we’ll see if this country boy is tough enough to see it through.

Girls like me don’t get happily ever afters… but maybe he’ll prove that wrong too.

Tracey’s Review

Game over. I’m done. She’s it. The one. Now I have to make her fall in love with me.

You met him in REAL DIRTY. Now, in REAL SEXY, the second book in the Real Dirty Duet, author Meghan March shows us just how sexy it is when country’s bad boy Boone Thrasher goes all in.

Boone and Ripley have zoomed right through the ‘getting to know you’ phase of their relationship, meeting so many roadblocks that it’s a wonder they’ve come through and are still talking to each other. But when Boone Thrasher puts his mind to something, as Ripley discovers, you might as well cry ‘Uncle’ and settle in for the ride. This doesn’t mean that Rip is a pushover, though. One of the things that Boone likes most about her is that she’s her own woman, willing and able to make her own way without riding on his coattails. And darned if that isn’t one of the things he loves most about her, which makes him sexier than ever in my book.

Meghan’s books are always going to be at the top of my list, because, oh, my goodness. Action, romance, cliffhangers galore, they’re a ride that I don’t want to miss, each and every time. I adore Boone and Ripley, and love the way that they are together, which is, simply, real. They’re each other’s biggest cheerleaders, and couldn’t quit each other if they had to.

One of my favorite things in a book is when friends we’ve met in other reads come to visit. Seeing those folks here, in REAL SEXY, rounds things out just perfectly. And, too, Meghan has introduced a certain someone, namely one Zane Frisco, that I’d love to get to know better, so, Meghan, if you’re reading this, take note. REAL SEXY is 5+ stars worth of sweep you off your feet, feel good, still so darned sexy goodness, and it needs to be on your TBR. Read it now, thank me later.

Real Dirty AMAZONI have everything a guy could want—a new single burning up the charts, more money than a simple country boy could spend, and a woman I’m planning to marry.

Until she doesn’t show up for my proposal.

The life I thought was so perfect, isn’t.

The guy who thought he had everything, doesn’t.

Duke of Manhattan by Louise Bay
Release Date: May 16th
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Duke of Manhattan, an all-new contemporary romance by Louise Bay is available now!!!

DukeofManhattan.Ebook

I was born into British aristocracy, but I’ve made my fortune in Manhattan. New York is now my kingdom.

Back in Britain my family are fighting over who’s the next Duke of Fairfax. The rules say it’s me–if I’m married. It’s not a trade-off worth making. I could never limit myself to just one woman.

Or so I thought until my world is turned upside down. Now, the only way I can save the empire I built is to inherit the title I’ve never wanted — so I need a wife.

To take my mind off business I need a night that’s all pleasure. I need to bury myself in a stranger.

The skim of Scarlett King’s hair over my body as she bends over . . .

The scrape of her nails across my chest as she screams my name . . .

The bite of her teeth on my shoulder just as we both reach the edge . . .

It all helps me forget.

I just didn’t bargain on finding my one night stand across the boardroom table the next day.

She might be my latest conquest but I have a feeling Scarlett King might just conquer me.

A sexy, standalone romance.

Tracey’s Review

What’s a duke to do when he finds himself in need of a duchess? Just one in name only, mind you, long enough to secure his empire, and keep things just the way that they are, thank you very much. If it’s Ryder Westbury, Duke of Fairfax, and New York royalty, he seeks solace in the arms of an unknown lovely, and vows to think about it tomorrow. Scarlett King, sister of the the Max King, is a capable businesswoman in her own right, but those pesky loans coming due are making the future look a little less than bright. Add to that the fact that she can’t find a man that keeps her interest for more than one date, and, well, a girls’ night out seems just the thing to take her mind off things. Who knew that a one night stand could change two lives so completely?

Oh, my gosh, this book. I’m pretty sure that I say that each successive man in Louise Bay’s books is my favorite, but Ryder Westbury has literally stolen the crown. Funny, sexy, and unabashedly single, the last thing on Ryder’s mind is getting married and settling down, even if it’s the only way to keep the family estate in the capable hands of his sister, and his business in his own hands. What to do, what to do? Enter one Scarlett King.

I cannot express how much I love Scarlett. She’s had a less than stellar experience at love, and is pretty sure that she’s never going to meet another man that will make her heart sing. She’s hardly expecting that a passionate night with the über-sexy Ryder Westbury will change the course of her life. But, oh, how he does.

These two are perfect for each other. Ryder, playboy player that he is, has a kind heart, a deep love of his family, and just the right amount of snark to keep things interesting. Scarlett is more than able to hold her own with him, and her sass, sparkle, and innate kindness show Ryder just what he’s been missing.

Louise’s books have long been some of my favorites, but I can easily say that DUKE OF MANHATTAN is leading the pack, and definitely one of my top romantic reads of 2017. There is not one bit of this story that I did not find myself loving, and getting to see old friends and favorites made it even more enjoyable. I know a book is a winner when I find myself saying, ‘I am just absolutely loving reading this!’ over and over again, and when I can’t put it down. DUKE OF MANHATTAN wins on both counts, and I couldn’t recommend it more. 5 sexy, sweet, HEA stars for Scarlett and Ryder. If you’re a fan of Louise, you truly don’t want to miss this one, and, if you don’t know Louise Bay and her writing yet, this one will make you a fan for sure.

Synopsis

He’s used to winning, but now he’s playing with his heart.

Still staring at my blank phone screen, I stumble toward the door and of course I walk straight into someone. Of course. Because to- day is going to be shitty in every possible way. Luckily, I manage to avoid getting chai latte on either of us; it barely spills over the lid and only dribbles onto my hand.

“I’m so sorry!” I say at the exact same time she does, and I look up to see a familiar face staring back, but I can’t place it.

She blinks azure eyes and then her whole face lights up. “Zoey?

Zoey Quinlin? Oh my God!”

She’s hugging me before I realize what’s happening. I wrap the hand not covered in latte around her back and return the embrace. She pulls back, still holding my shoulders, and smiles. “Holy crap! It’s been over ten years! Oh my God.” She pauses and glances around before adding in a softer voice, “It’s Dixie. Dixie Braddock. You used to babysit me at my family’s summer cottage in Maine. You were friends with my brother, Jude.”

“Holy shit! Dixie Braddock?” I can’t believe it. The last time I saw her she was thirteen. Wheat hair; pink, suntanned skin; freckles across her nose and chronically scabbed-up knees from trying to keep up with her older sisters and brother, who were all daredevils on their bikes and skateboards and surfboards. Babysitting them—well, the girls, anyway—for the two years I lived in Maine was a highlight of my summers. And so was seeing their brother. Shit, I hadn’t thought of Jude Braddock in a while. I find myself smiling now that I am.

“You live in San Fran?” she questions as she takes my elbow and leads me over to the counter and hands me a napkin for my latte- soaked hand.

“Yeah. Stayed local after college,” I explain as I put down the latte and wipe my hand. “And you live here?”

She nods, her sleek blond bob moving like a curtain around her face. She looks close to the tiny thing I babysat but much more refined and beautiful now. I do the math: she’s only twenty-four, but she looks more put together than any twenty-four-year-old I’ve known.

“Yeah. I went to school for sports media, then interned with the San Francisco Thunder hockey team, and they hired me full- time this year.” Her eyes dart around, and her voice drops again. “Jude plays for them, so I use my mom’s last name, Wynn, so no one thinks he got me the job. He didn’t.”

“Jude is in San Francisco?” I don’t know why I felt the need to say that with such breathless shock. I knew he made the NHL, but I had thought he was playing in Milwaukee. That’s where he was last time I Googled him, which was three years ago, before I married Adam.

“Yeah. Got traded a couple years ago,” Dixie explains. “So how’s your family? Where’s your dad preaching now?”

“He’s retired. Mom and Dad are in Sacramento,” I explain. “My brother, Morgan, is a teacher here in San Francisco.”

“Morgan!” She laughs and her cheeks turn a little pink. “Sadie, Winnie and I had such a crush on your brother when we were little. Remember we used to keep begging you to invite him over when you were watching us?”

I nod and can’t help but smile back. Yeah, that memory hasn’t faded. The Braddock girls wanted my brother to come over, but I never invited him. Not because he was gay, which I already knew at that point, but because if Morgan was around, he would tease me about gawking at Jude, which I always did if he happened to come home before Mr. and Mrs. Braddock’s date night ended.

Dixie glances at her phone in her hand, and I realize we both must have been looking at our screens when we collided. She frowns. “I have to go. I have a meeting at the arena in twenty.” She puts a hand on my arm again. “But I would love to catch up with you, and I know Winnie and Sadie would too. They’re going to be in town this weekend. Would you be able to do brunch?”

“Yeah, I can do brunch,” I reply and am shocked at how excited I am at her suggestion. I haven’t really done much of anything social since the separation. I kind of lost touch with a lot of my friends after marrying Adam and adopted his circle of friends. And they all promptly orphaned me after the separation. I didn’t care much because I didn’t feel up to social interaction, but suddenly this seems like a pleasant distraction from my reality. The Braddock family was one of my favorite parts of my childhood.

“Amazing!” Dixie almost squeals. “How about tomorrow. Eleven?”

I nod. “Where?”

“You pick.”

“MKT?” I blurt out because it’s in my hotel and I’m too flustered to think of anything else. To be honest, I don’t even know what they serve for brunch.

“Great! Sadie loves that place, and she’s normally impossible to please.” She hugs me again. “See you tomorrow! Winnie and Sadie are going to be so excited!”

And then, before I can even lift my hand to wave, she’s back out the door. She never even got a coffee, but she doesn’t seem to notice. I’m more dumbfounded and confused than I was from the phone call with Minerva. The Braddocks are here. Well, at least Jude and Dixie are here. In San Francisco. Where I live. When the hell did that happen?

I look around the coffee shop to make sure there’s no one else from my past lurking around. A teacher, a neighbor, another sister of an old unconsummated love. Although Jude was my only unrequited love, but he did have three sisters. Whom I will be having brunch with tomorrow. Crazy!

I slip out of Peet’s and concentrate on the clicking of my heels as I make my way back over to my office. I finally take a sip of my jostled latte. It’s barely warm but the caffeine still manages to clear my head a little. Not enough that eagle-eye Marti doesn’t notice something is up.

“Everything okay?” she wants to know as she stands at her desk, gathering things she needs for her day and placing them in her bag. “You look more out of it than you did before the coffee.”

“I ran into someone I haven’t seen in a long time,” I murmur, and for some reason Jude’s seventeen-year-old face floats through my head, not Dixie’s from this morning. “The last time I saw her was in Maine eleven years ago, so it was surprising.”

“Wow.” Marti takes a break from filling her Michael Kors satchel with listing flyers. “Small world, huh? I love when that happens. Unless it’s someone I hate. Was it someone you hate?”

“No. Not at all,” I reply and drop down gently into my seat. “She and her sisters were sweethearts. Seems like they still are. I’ll definitely find out, because I’m having brunch with them tomorrow.”

“Cool.” Marti isn’t paying attention anymore. Her eyes are focused across the room on Parker McDavid, who is the owner of our company. He’s midforties, tall with a dad bod that is oddly at- tractive, probably because he covers it in perfectly tailored designer clothes. His dark hair is graying in all the right places, like George Clooney’s, and his eyes are warm and his smile is kind. But he’s an astute businessman who expects a lot from his Realtors, and Marti is constantly trying to impress him. I am too, if I’m being honest, but I’m new. She’s not new, but she’s still hungry.

“I’m going to tell Parker about the deal I just closed, and then I’m off for a condo showing,” Marti explains and barely even waves good-bye as she hustles toward the kitchen Parker just disappeared into for his morning croissant and English Breakfast tea.

I open my laptop and pull up my email, determined to keep my mind focused on work. I need to send a follow-up email regarding the potential Haight listing, but my brain is bouncing from Adam to Dixie.

One future encounter I’m dreading—confronting Adam—and one I’m looking forward to—seeing the Braddock sisters. But the one that isn’t destined to happen is the one that fills me with excitement I haven’t felt in a long time—the potential that since I’m meeting three Braddock siblings I might also run into the fourth: Jude.

Michel’s Review

Victoria Denault has scored big and totally won my heart with her new hockey series, The San Francisco Thunder.  I loved everything about this book, from the romance to the dynamic secondary characters.  This book came to life and all of the characters had my complete attention.

Jude Braddock is the living, breathing, sex god of the San Francisco Thunder.  Not only does he score big on the ice, he also scores big with the ladies. His bedroom moves are legendary.  His “hockey stick” is an internet sensation.  So how could a man of this caliber have women problems? Very easily, he hasn’t been discreet nor has he been careful with his tryst.  Women are showing up on his doorstep, his phone is ringing all hours of the night, and his sexual escapades are on the internet.  Maybe it’s time to move and become more discreet, The one thing he won’t do is settle down to one woman.  That is until he runs into his sisters ( the sorority) former babysitter, Zoey.  Zoey is the one girl that got away.  This time around he’s going to make sure he catches her and doesn’t ply her with Boones Farm wine.  This time he’s doing the seduction right.

Zoey has just split from her husband.  The divorce procedures have turned quite nasty.  She’s working her tail off trying to establish a new career in real estate while trying to hang onto what is rightfully hers.  When she runs into her childhood friends, the Braddocks, it makes life seem a little better.  Reuniting with old friends is what she needed.  Hooking up with Jude Braddock is a bonus.  First she has to finalize her divorce and get her feet on solid ground.  She also needs to stay away from Boones Farm wine at all cost.

Zoey and Jude are doing more than rekindling an old friendship.  They are falling in love, but it’s going to take a miracle before either one admits it.  Miracles are known to happen.

I absolutely loved every moment in this book, from the snarky sorority sisters to the team dynamics, every character added something exceptionally special to Zoey and Jude’s romance.

I have read every novel Victoria Denault has written.  Score is my favorite book thus far.  Her growth as a writer and character development has excelled by leaps and bounds. I can’t wait to see what comes next in the San Francisco Thunder series.

Blurb

There will be a battle, and you will need to protect your heart.

Kjell of Jeru had always known who he was. He’d never envied his brother or wanted to be king. He was the bastard son of the late King Zoltev and a servant girl, and the ignominy of his birth had never bothered him.

But there is more to a man than his parentage. More to a man than his blade, his size, or his skills, and all that Kjell once knew has shifted and changed. He is no longer simply Kjell of Jeru, a warrior defending the crown. Now he is a healer, one of the Gifted, and a man completely at odds with his power.

Called upon to rid the country of the last vestiges of the Volgar, Kjell stumbles upon a woman who has troubling glimpses of the future and no memory of the past. Armed with his unwanted gift and haunted by regret, Kjell becomes a reluctant savior, beset by old enemies and new expectations. With the woman by his side, Kjell embarks upon a journey where the greatest test may be finding the man she believes him to be.

Michel’s Review

The Bird and the Sword Chronicles saga continues with the second release, The Queen and the Cure by Amy Harmon.   I was quickly drawn back to the land of Jeru and their journey into a new era.  This book can be read as a stand alone novel but I would highly recommend reading the first book in the series.  It gives the reader a richer and more in depth reading experience.

The gifted are no longer the outcasts of society.  They no longer have to live in fear.  Like most things change takes time.  It takes courage to take the first steps.  It takes courage to stand out among men.  Kjell of Jeru can walk into battle and defeat any enemy.  He’s fearless but accepting his gift as a healer is another story.  He has taken too many lives in the past without thought, how can a man of violence have the gift of healing.  And what is the cost of using this gift.  He no longer knows who he is or where his place among the new kingdom of Jeru is.  He may be the bastard son of the king but he is not royalty.

When Kjell is sent by his brother, King Zoltev, to finish off the birdmen, he doesn’t realize that this quest is more than a expedition for the king. It is his destiny.  When he saves a girl from death and takes her visions to heart, it is the beginning of a journey that will once again change the world as he knows it.

Without giving away any spoilers, this book is another epic tale that is more than a fantasy adventure.  Amy Harmon once again delivers a moving story that illuminates the human spirit. I could not put this book down.

Synopsis

Swallow, daughter, pull them in, those words that sit upon your lips. Lock them deep inside your soul, hide them ‘til they’ve time to grow. Close your mouth upon the power, curse not, cure not, ‘til the hour. You won’t speak and you won’t tell, you won’t call on heaven or hell. You will learn and you will thrive. Silence, daughter. The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would sell his soul and lose his only son to the sky.

My father has a claim to the throne, and he is waiting in the shadows for all of my mother’s words to come to pass. He wants desperately to be king, and I just want to be free.

But freedom will require escape, and I’m a prisoner of my mother’s curse and my father’s greed. I can’t speak or make a sound, and I can’t wield a sword or beguile a king. In a land purged of enchantment, love might be the only magic left, and who could ever love . . . a little bird?
