A Gentleman for Christmas, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Prescott Lane.

Some say “chivalry is dead.”

I don’t think so. Most women I know like a gentleman.

Protective, opens doors, treats women with respect, typically follows the rules.

But a gentleman doesn’t fall for his best friend’s woman. Current or ex.

And that’s what I’ve done.

During the Christmas season of all times — that magical time for decorations, gifts, family . . .

Yes, the girl who was off-limits for so long, who I’ve loved all my life, has come back in town and possibly back to me.

I can’t follow the gentleman rules this time. There’s too much at stake. I let her go once. I won’t let her go again.

What happens under the mistletoe, stays under the mistletoe.

Or does it?

Excerpt:

“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.”

Otherwise known as the original bros before hoes commandment.

I’m not advocating calling women hoes. It’s an expression, so put away your Encyclopedia of Political Correctness.

There are rules in life. The Ten Commandments were just the beginning. We have rules for everything. How to drive. How to dress. How to walk across the damn street. So why not rules for love? That’s how all this started — a set of rules between my buddies and me.

The Bro Code.

Obviously, bros before hoes is rule one. We vowed never to let a girl come between us, which meant if one of us liked a girl, she was forever off limits.

Little did I know our teenage pact would launch my multi-million dollar career. A little tweaking here and some socially acceptable rewording there and The Gentleman’s Handbook was born.

I’ve written books and given seminars on everything from how to find love, to how to propose, to how to have a successful long-distance relationship. You name it, and I’ve got rules for it. Personally, I’ve never been much of a rule follower, but that’s my little secret.

The funny thing is I’ve never been in love. Well, there is this one girl, but we won’t talk about her. It does no good to think about someone you can’t have and never will.

My lack of emotional commitment hasn’t slowed down my career one bit. Currently, I have two books on the New York Times Best Sellers List. My seminars sell out like a Drake concert.

I always find it interesting that the rules started between a group of male friends, but it’s mostly women that come to hear me speak. Occasionally, you see the poor sap boyfriend who was dragged along to listen, but for the most part it’s all women.

This time of the year is no exception. December first until January first is important for guys. Holidays are big for a lot of couples. If you don’t know what you’re doing for your lady, you better figure it out and fast. In fact, my rule is that you should be paying attention all year long.

Trust me on this. If you remember something she mentioned she liked three months ago and surprise her with it at Christmas, she’ll spread her legs before Santa even has time to slide down the chimney. Let’s be honest, that is always at least part of the goal for guys.

So my current work in progress tackles Christmas. A how-to guide for the holidays.

The Gentleman’s Rules for Christmas.

Tracey’s Review

“There are rules in life. The Ten Commandments were just the beginning. We have rules for everything…So why not rules for love? That’s how all this started—a set of rules between my buddies and me. The Bro Code.”

Jax and Skylar had been friends forever. But, as time passed, there was something more there. The problem? Jax’s friend Luke liked Skylar, too, and the Bro Code did not allow for crossing that line. It’s been ten years, and Jax has remained the dutiful friend, standing aside so that Luke could have Skylar for himself. Except…

Gentleman’s Rule — If you don’t love her, someone else will.

Now there’s trouble in paradise, and Skylar’s heading home—without Luke. And Jax will be darned if any rules will stand in his way this time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Like “I could not put it down, needed to see what happened next, was Team Jax all the way” enjoyed it. Jax is a guy, trying to do the ‘right thing,’ but, let’s face it, the heart wants what it wants, and Jax’s heart has wanted Skylar for a very long time. Gentleman he may be, but he’s human, too.

I’ve read and enjoyed several books by Prescott Lane, and this one is right up there as one of my favorites. Jax, Skylar, and their family and group of friends are fun and touching, and just what I was looking for. An easy 4.5 stars, A GENTLEMAN FOR CHRISTMAS and its message of second-chance love with a twist of bittersweet angst made it the perfect addition to my list of holiday reads, and one that I happily recommend.

New Release + Blog Tour + Excerpt + 4.5-Star Review: Tequila, Tequila by Emma Hart

TT-Live3.jpg

Tequila + you best friend + your bedroom = um, whoopsie?

Tequila Tequila, an all-new hilarious standalone romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Emma Hart is available NOW!

TT-FULL

Don’t sleep with your best friend.

Take it from me. I did it. And it was awful.

I-wish-the-tequila-made-me-forget kind of bad.

The problem is, Luke has forgotten. He swears that he can’t remember a thing about that night beyond the trays of tequila shots being set on the tables.

Except I can’t forget. I can’t forget how good his hands felt until I fell over and hit my hip on the dresser, and I sure as hell can’t forget the entire two minutes of tap-tap-squirt.

Awkward. Embarrassing. And the new subject of a couple of dirty lucid dreams.

But I have no intention of telling him what we did. Nothing good comes from telling your best friend he’s the worst guy you’ve ever slept with.

Which makes the tequila on my birthday a very, very bad idea…

TEQUILA-teaser2-live.jpg

Excerpt:

Have you ever walked into a store and had to ask where the lady section is?”

I paused, my grip on the fridge door firm, and turned to him. I simply blinked. I wasn’t going to justify that with an answer.

“It took three people before a poor woman at the customer service desk took pity on me and walked me to the tampon aisle,” he went on, oblivious to my death stare. “She hovered over me for a second and I started fucking sweating, Aspen. Sweating.”

I bit my lip and moved the ingredients for his sandwich over to the board on the island.

“I almost dropped my phone trying to find the photo you sent me, and when I finally brought it up, I was so fucking confused I stood there like a lame damn duck for five minutes before she came back to help me like she knew I was a total idiot.”

Was it wrong that I was way more amused about this than anything else? A part of me told me I should feel bad, but…

“Did you know there are tons of those things? The boxes are all different. There are different brands. Different sizes. Different… absorbency levels.” He shuddered, his wide, muscled shoulders shaking with his cringey thought. “For flows and stuff.”

“I shop there regularly. I am aware.”

“Not that fucking regularly if you sent me to buy them,” he muttered. “Anyway, the nice lady who was trying her best not to laugh at the idiot in the sanitary products aisle asked me who I was buying them for. My mom, my sister, my girlfriend…”

I chopped the lettuce.

“When I told her it was for my best friend, she looked at me funny for a minute before nodding. Then, she dragged me over to the aisle with the candy and told me that Twizzlers went well with tampons. I was so confused I didn’t question her, so here.” He lifted a small bag from the stool next to him and tossed it in my direction. “You’re the proud owner of eight packets of Twizzlers.”

“Oooh, Twizzlers!” I dropped the knife and dove into the bag, pulling out all the long, red packets. “This is like heaven!”

“Dude.” Luke leaned forward and held his hands out. “My sandwich?”

“Geez, who’s on their period? You or me?” I put the candy down and went back to making his sandwich. “You should have saved the Twizzlers until after you got your food.”

“Rookie mistake.” He shook his head. “Please don’t ever ask me to buy you tampons again. I’m not sure my ego or reputation can take it.”

“Your reputation got shot to shit on your twenty-first when you mooned the mayor in the town square,” I reminded him.

“And I haven’t mooned anyone since,” he replied. “My pants now stay firmly on when I drink.”

Tracey’s Review

First there was tequila. A loooottt of tequila. The tequila led to kissing, which led to much more than kissing, and, well, when you’re doing much more than kissing with your best friend, it’s not a good thing. Or is it…?

As romantic comedies go, TEQUILA, TEQUILA is right on. Funny, snarky, sexy, author Emma Hart’s done it right. In Aspen and Luke, she’s written two people that go together in every other way, so it seems like, despite the bumps along the way, ending up together, and as more than BFFL’s, is their natural course.

Emma’s heroines are some of my favorites, because they’re always full of sass and not afraid to use it. Aspen’s take-n0-prisoners approach to life is the perfect foil to Luke’s ‘guy friend plus,’ and I thoroughly enjoyed watching them find their way to their HEA.

I always know what I’m getting when I crack open one of Emma’s books, and TEQUILA, TEQUILA does not disappoint. It’s a rollicking, laugh-out-loud (yeah, sorry about that, unsuspecting bystanders), feel good read that left me smiling, and it will you, too. Pour yourself your favorite beverage, settle in, and enjoy.

I love the whole idea of the Cooking With Books tours, because, not only do we get stories about characters that we love, we get some kick-butt recipes to go with them.

DINING WITH ANGELS is the latest collaboration of a popular romance author, in this case Larissa Ione, and Suzanne M. Johnson, creator extraordinaire of recipes perfectly paired with characters and storylines.

Because I like my dishes like I like my leading men, I went for the Spicy Food collection from the chapter featuring Harvester and Reaver, and, because chocolate is never a bad idea, the Dark Chocolate Chipotle Brownies.

One of the great things about the recipes in DINING WITH ANGELS is that many of the ingredients are probably already in your pantry. I even had the chipotle powder (did I mention that I like spicy?), which made these brownies a no-brainer.

The recipe is straightforward and simple, and these brownies are truly a one-bowl endeavor. If you’re wanting chocolate and spice, and you want them fast, this recipe is for you.

Literally half an hour from pulling out all of my ingredients to delectable dessert.

I have a bit of a disclaimer, and that is that I am a purist, so I did not frost the brownies. Honestly, they were absolutely delish as is, but, if you’re a fan of a brownie with icing, it is included in the recipe. No matter which way you like them, though, make sure to grab a copy of DINING WITH ANGELS and try this, and all of the other fantastic recipes for yourself.

BLURB
The conclusion of the surprising love story begun in Dirty Sexy Player.

I didn’t have a plan for him.

He was the means to an end, a workaround to the cruel terms of my father’s will that would allow me to inherit his company.

I hadn’t planned to fall for him.

I hadn’t planned to enjoy every minute of our wedding, hadn’t planned to gasp his name so many times that night, hadn’t planned for the sexy games on our honeymoon.

He didn’t plan for his secrets to come out.

And neither of us planned for heartbreak.

EXCERPT

As soon as we were in our suite, the bomb exploded, the bomb being Elizabeth. “We’re alone now, so just tell me straight. You knew I was always going to France. If you wanted to be with me, you had to know it would involve living there. Is that not something you’ll even consider? Is it Sabrina? Is it Reach? Is it Donovan? Because if it’s fucking Donovan who’s keeping you from—”

I grabbed her hands, which were flying in midair as she yelled, and pulled them behind her back at her waist as I cut her off with a searing kiss, my tongue plunging into her open mouth, robbing her of oxygen.

When she was thoroughly kissed, her lips pliable, her body sagging in my arms, I let her go.

“I’m tired, Elizabeth. I’m not discussing fucking anything tonight.” I took off my tuxedo jacket and threw it on the desk. Then I began working on my cufflinks. “What I think we both need now is to release some tension.”

Her spine straightened, her neck growing longer as she stared at me in shock. “You think we’re going to have sex now?”

I loved how she made it sound disgusting, like she wasn’t interested, even when I’d just been kissing her and had felt the lean in her body, had tasted the desire in her mouth.

Two could play the indifference game.

I shrugged. “I’m fucking someone tonight. If you want it to be you, you better take off your dress.”

Her mouth slammed shut, and she only seemed to consider it for two seconds before she was fumbling with the zipper at her back. She struggled with it, but I didn’t help her. It made me stiff to watch her frantically trying to strip down, just because I told her to. Just because she thought I might find a better offer if she didn’t.

Like there was a better offer than her.

Like there was anyone but her.

I didn’t take my eyes off her as I unbuttoned my vest and tossed it to the side with my jacket. I’d loosened my tie by the time she got her dress undone. It fell to the floor and she was left wearing a strapless corseted bra, one that had a low back so it couldn’t be seen with her dress on, and matching lace panties—both in a white ivory so virginal and bridal it seemed dirty.

Jesus, she was a fucking wet dream.

And she was my wife.

4.5 star

Tracey’s Review

After the jaw-dropping ending of DIRTY SEXY PLAYER, I could not wait to get my hands on DIRTY SEXY GAMES to see what in the heck Laurelin Paige had up her sleeve for these characters. And, as ever, she did not disappoint, delivering the rest of Weston’s and Elizabeth’s story in a way that was just what I was looking for.

I have to confess to loving Weston King an awful lot, and, for a guy that I was ready to write off as shallow, self-centered, and a veritable manwhore, he proved himself to be so much more. Humorous, passionate, and giving, Weston has much more going on than would appear. I don’t want to say too much and spoil anything, but he more than rises to the occasion for those that he cares about.

Elizabeth Dyson is a revelation, as well, her unexpected love for Weston allowing her to blossom into a woman that is more than the public persona that she’s cultivated, and the perfect match for Weston. Together, the two of them are the a power couple extraordinaire, yet down to earth in ways that I was not anticipating.

DIRTY SEXY GAMES is the perfect wrap-up for these two. Laurelin clearly loves her characters, and has written them so that I couldn’t help but do the same. This is an easy 4.5 stars for me, and one that fans of her books should snap right up. (NOTE: DIRTY SEXY GAMES is not a standalone. Make sure that you’ve read DIRTY SEXY PLAYER first!)

Hester Fox

Hello readers, I’m so excited to share an excerpt with you from my debut novel, THE WITCH OF WILLOW HALL (on-sale October 2, 2018). My name is Hester Fox, and hailing from Boston, I’ve always been fascinated with the rich and oftentimes dark history of this period. My novel takes place in a small New England town over 130 years after the infamous Salem Witch trials, and features a Gothic, melancholy atmosphere, restless spirits, and of course, resilient women. I hope you enjoy this excerpt I’ve pulled for you.

~*~

Gingerly, I get up, my legs full of pins and needles from sitting on the floor so long. Just like the night of the woman in the garden, I can’t stay in the library knowing that someone might be there. I must go and look for myself.

Even with the sun coming through the windows, illuminating the wood floors and catching the light of the crystal lamps, I feel as if I’m making my way through a dark, murky passage. My feet are heavy, as if they know something that my mind does not.

The door to the dining room is closed. It beckons me, yet repels me, exuding a sense of silent occupation. My ears buzz. A singsong chorus of whispers grows as I approach.

Are you ready?

I am here.

You attract them.

Are you ready?

Prepare for what lies ahead.

Prepare.

Prepare.

They mount and mount into a dizzying jumble of sound and I run the rest of the way to the door, my heart in my chest, my eyes squeezed shut. Grasping the knob, I fling open the door. The voices die away.

I knew it would be there. But it doesn’t stop me from gasping as every part of me curls back in on itself in horror. My blood turns to ice.

Seated at the table is a woman, or what used to be a woman. She sits as if she has every right to be there, as if she has always been there. A veil covers her face, but it is gauzy and threadbare, and I can see the contours of the features beneath. Her dress is old, black as night yet opalescent as the moon through a cobweb. Paralyzed with fear, I watch as it moves about her of its own accord, a soft undulation as if she were underwater. And though I can see her as clear as day, the veiled woman in our dining room, there’s a translucence to her, and the panoramic wallpaper is just visible behind her. She is like nothing and no one I have ever seen before, and yet she is familiar, as if I have always known her.

“Come, child.” Her voice comes from everywhere and nowhere, and when her words are finished, I have the unnerving feeling that they weren’t spoken aloud at all, but came from within my head.

She beckons me with a knobby finger, more bone than flesh.

I can’t drag my gaze away from her face, the sunken holes where there ought to be eyes, the lipless mouth, all teeth and blackness. The cold pie that I just enjoyed churns in my stomach and threatens to come up. She beckons me again, and I imagine those long, terrible fingers closing around my neck and choking the life out of me. I imagine them raking me across the face until ribbons of skin flutter from my skull. I stand my ground, unwilling to deliver myself up to her. She is the stuff of my novels, a grotesque horror that titillates on the page, but sends terror into my heart when in the same room as me.

She gives something like a grunt, and as if able to read my thoughts, says, “One hundred and thirty years of death is not gentle on a body. Come, do not gawk.” I dare not disobey her, so I force my leaden feet to move a few steps closer.

The smell of decay and death fills the room, sickly sweet and putrid at the same time. My stomach clenches at the memories the odor brings back of Emeline in her coffin. My throat is tight, my mouth cotton, but somehow I’m able to gasp out, “W-who are you?”

She makes a noise, something between a snort and a laugh, a scraping, rattling sound, though it’s devoid of humor. “Do you not know your own forebear?”

The blackness of her dress curls around her like a snake, but she sits as motionless as if she were carved of stone. Her stillness is suffocating, it dares the house to be silent, and punishes the sunlight for filtering in through the window.

Warily, I come to a halt at the edge of the dining room table. I don’t know what she’s talking about. “Forebear?”

“Have you not looked upon me since you were a babe? Do you not recognize in me what flows through you?”

“I…” But then it comes to me. The lace collar, though tattered and black as her dress, is unmistakable around her neck. “You’re the woman in the painting. Mother’s ancestor.”

The inclination of her head is small, barely perceptible.

Tracey’s Review

It has been a while since I picked up any historical fiction, and I always forget just how much I like it. When I read the blurb for THE WITCH OF WILLOW HALL, I was intrigued enough to add it to my TBR, although I did not really know what to expect. I mean, it was coming out around Halloween, it’s a historical piece, and there is some romance in there, so, why not?

I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. Author Hester Fox did a great job with developing these characters, giving them depth and writing them so that I became completely invested in their stories. The story was engrossing, and I found it hard to put down, drawn in by the hint of darkness and the gothic feel of it.

This book was extremely well done, and I really feel like, for a new author, Hester Fox is well on her way to making a name for herself. If her follow-ups are nearly as good as this book, I will happily read each of them, and recommend them as well. As it stands, THE WITCH OF WILLOW HALL is an easy 4 stars for me, and no, it’s not just for Halloween time. About TEMPTING BROOKE:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby comes a new story in her Big Sky series…

Brooke’s Blooms has taken Cunningham Falls by surprise. The beautiful, innovative flower shop is trendy, with not only gorgeous flower arrangements, but also fun gifts for any occasion. This store is Brooke Henderson’s deepest joy, and it means everything to her, which shows in how completely she and her little shop have been embraced by the small community of Cunningham Falls.

So, when her landlord dies and Brody Chabot saunters through her door, announcing that the building has been sold, and will soon be demolished, Brooke knows that she’s in for the fight of her life. But she hasn’t gotten this far by sitting back and quietly doing what she’s told. Hustle is Brooke’s middle name, and she has no intention of losing this fight, no matter how tempting Brody’s smile — and body — is.

EXCERPT:

Brody Chabot.

“Brooke?” A slow grin spreads over that sexy mouth, and I have to take a minute to just soak him in. He’s grown a couple more inches, making him ridiculously tall. His dark hair is cut short around his ears, and a little longer on top, stylishly messy.

He’s in cargo shorts and a polo shirt, due to it being the hottest day of the year so far out there.

“Hi, Brody,” I reply and swallow hard. “Thanks for meeting with me.”

“Hi, Brody,” Maisey says with a smile. “Welcome back.”

He blinks and nods, then tosses her a friendly smile. “Thanks. Good to see you.” He turns back to me as he tucks his sunglasses in his pocket. “I thought, since the space next door is empty, we could walk over there.”

I nod and tuck a piece of my hair behind my ear. “That works. Maisey, do you and Micah have this?”

“Of course. Take your time.”

I send her a look that says thanks, but if I’m not back in an hour, come get me.

Brody leads the way and unlocks the glass door, then holds it open for me and waits for me to go ahead of him. He locks the door back up and follows me in.

The room is empty, aside from a glass countertop that used to display knick knacks. Brody walks behind it and leans on it casually, crosses his arms over his chest, and takes a moment to look me up and down, from my toes to my head.

“You still look sixteen,” he says quietly. Just like that, his voice does things to me. It’s deeper now, and his brown eyes aren’t the eyes of a boy anymore. He’s 100% pure sexy man, and I’m suddenly wishing I’d asked Maisey to attend this meeting with me.

“I don’t feel sixteen,” I reply with a small laugh and rest my hands on the countertop across from him. I’m only five-feet-two, so I have to look way up to meet his gaze. His eyes are guarded, but happy. I look at his left hand, and notice that he isn’t wearing a ring.

“You’re not wearing one either,” he says quietly.

“No.”

He nods once. “I’m assuming you wanted to meet about the letter.”

“I do, yes. Brody, I need you to reconsider.”

His eyebrows climb in surprise. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. I’d like you to reconsider selling the building. If you sell, and I have to relocate, I could very well go out of business, and this business is important, Brody.”

“To you.”

“To this community.”

Tracey’s Review

As a long-time fan of author Kristen Proby, it would be hard for me to find fault with anything that she writes, because I find that she really just hits the mark every time. Part of the appeal for me is that she writes series that revolve around the same group of people, allowing readers to get to know all of the different characters and their stories. TEMPTING BROOKE, the latest addition to Kristen’s Big Sky series, checks all of the contemporary romance boxes for me. A beautiful small town setting, a second-chance romance of sorts, with a bit of the taboo of best friends thrown in, and chemistry that sizzles and delights.

Although I’m not a fan of insta-love, I can give Brooke and Brody a pass, because they’ve known each other for such a long time, and it’s actually very nice to see them slip pretty effortlessly back into their relationship, and to take it to another level. Their passion is built on familiarity and being comfortable with each other, and the fact that there is something there to build on makes their relationship more believable.

TEMPTING BROOKE is a novella, so it’s a little bit shorter than the rest of the books in the series. My only disappointment is that I would have liked to see more of these two, to spend more time getting to know them, but knowing that they’ll likely make an appearance in future books gives me something to look forward to. This is a sweet and easy read, and definitely one that fans of the Big Sky series will want to add this one to their collection.

Whitney Gable is the kind of woman you fight to the death to protect.

To keep.

To cherish.

I’ve finally learned my lesson, and it’s time to prove I’m the man who’s worthy of her.

I don’t care what it takes, because failure is not an option.

No matter who or what stands in our way—this time, she’ll be mine forever

From New York Times bestselling author Meghan March comes a brand new saga of forbidden love and second chances.

A Riscoff and a Gable can never live happily ever after. Our family feud is the stuff of legends.

Ten years ago, Whitney Gable caught me off guard with her long legs and grab-you-by-the-balls blue eyes.

I didn’t know or care what her name was.

Like any Riscoff worth the family name, I went after what I wanted. We burned like a flash fire until she married another man.

She hates me, and she should.

I objected on her wedding day.

Now she’s home, with those same long legs and man-eater stare, but there’s no ring on her finger.

They say a Riscoff and a Gable can never live happily ever after . . . but I’m not done with Whitney Gable.

I’ll never be done with her.

Guilty until proven innocent.

That’s the way the world works, right?

I’m tired of being convicted without evidence, all because my last name is Gable.

The Riscoffs might own this town, but I’m done following their rules.

If only I could forget just how easily Lincoln Riscoff can drag me under his spell.

Prologue

Ava

We met in a bar, of all places, a dingy hole-in-the-wall favored by military members from the nearby Navy base in San Diego. I went with a friend from school who was interested in one of the military guys. Before that night, I’d never been there, and I’ve never been back. John was celebrating the promotion of one of his buddies. He crashed into me as I left the ladies’ room and kept me from falling by grabbing my arms to steady me.

Just like in the movies, our eyes met, and my spine tingled with the kind of instantaneous awareness I’d only read about but never experienced personally.

“I’m so sorry,” he said, gorgeous and fierce in his fatigues.

I noticed gold on his collar, a hint of late-day scruff on his jaw and the name WEST in bold black letters on his chest. Intense electric-blue eyes made it impossible for me to look away, even when I was safely back on my feet.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

Realizing I’d been staring at him, I blinked and reluctantly broke the connection. “I… Yes, I’m fine. Thank you for the save.”

And then he smiled, and the tingling began anew.

“I’m John.”

I shook his outstretched hand. “Ava.”

Keeping his hold on my hand, he tipped his head. “You come here often?”

“Never,” I said, laughing. “I’m a first-timer.”

“What do you think so far?”

“I wasn’t impressed until about thirty seconds ago.”

As if he had all the time in the world to give me, he leaned against the wall. “Is that right? What happened thirty seconds ago?”

I thought about taking back my hand but didn’t. “I was saved from certain disaster by a man in uniform.”

“The guy in the uniform is the reason you needed saving in the first place, because he wasn’t watching where he was going. Least he can do is buy you a drink.”

“I wouldn’t say no to that.” I was proud of my witty responses and got the feeling he could more than hold his own in the wittiness department. Across the crowded room, I noticed my friend talking to the guy she’d come to see, and her brows lifted in interest when she saw me with John. He guided me to the bar, placing a proprietary hand on my lower back, and told one of the guys to give me his stool.

“Yes, sir.” The younger man bowed gallantly to me as he took his beer and moved along.

“Do people always do what you say?”

“If they know what’s good for them.” His teasing grin kept the comment from being overly cocky. “What can I get you?”

Deciding to live dangerously for once, I asked for a cosmopolitan.

“Go big or go home,” he said with admiration.

“That’s my motto.” I was so full of shit. I wondered if he could tell I was all talk or what he’d think of me if he knew I usually err much closer to the side of caution than the wild side. I wondered if he could tell I was just barely old enough to drink. I’d turned twenty-one only six months earlier.

When my cosmo and his Budweiser had been delivered, he offered a toast. “To new friends.”

I touched my glass to his bottle. “To new friends.”

“So, where’re you from, Ava?”

“New York.”

“I thought I heard New Yawk in your voice.”

I batted my eyelashes at him. “So four years at the University of California San Diego didn’t scrub the New York out of me?”

Laughing, he said, “Hardly. I know some guys from New York. One of them is from Staten Island, which is about as New York as it gets. I know New York when I hear it.”

“I’m from Purchase, upstate from the city. What about you?”

“I’m from all over. My old man is a retired general. You name it, I’ve lived there.”

“Where’s home?”

“Right here.” He turned that intense gaze on me, and I went stupid in the head. I couldn’t see anything but him. We might as well have been alone in the crowded bar for all I knew. Unlike my friend, who loved men in uniform, I was never turned on by the uniform. Until then. Until John. “You want to get out of here?”

I swallowed hard. It wasn’t like me to leave a bar with a man I’d just met. “And go where?”

“Somewhere we can talk.”

“What do you want to talk about?”

He leaned in so his lips were close to my ear. “Everything. I want to know every single thing there is to know about you.”

That’s how we started. We were intense from the first second we met until the last time I saw him five years ago today. I can’t believe it’s been five years since I looked into those incredible blue eyes or woke to him on the pillow next to me or heard his voice in my ear, whispering words that’re permanently carved into my heart as he made love to me.

The worst part is I have no idea where he is. I don’t know if he’s alive or dead, being held captive or if he’s living his life somewhere else with someone else. I don’t know, and the not knowing is the hardest thing I’ve ever dealt with.

I love him as much today as I ever did. No amount of time could ever change that simple fact of my life. We had two beautiful, magnificent years together, caught up in our own little bubble. He never met my family. I never met his. We didn’t make couple friends. We didn’t talk about the future. We didn’t need to. Our future was decided that first night, and it would take care of itself in due time. I honestly and naïvely believed that.

Now, with hindsight, I realize the bubble was strategic on his part. He gave me everything he had to give, including no promise of tomorrow.

Five years ago today, we watched the horror unfold on live television. A US-based cruise ship blown up by suicide bombers. Four thousand lives extinguished in a heartbeat. Our world permanently changed once again, our country declaring yet another war on terrorists. After 9/11 we thought we’d seen everything. We were wrong.

“I have to go,” he said, grabbing the duffel that stood ready in the front hall closet. He called it his “go bag.” I’d thought nothing of it.

“Where’re you going?”

“I don’t know.”

“When will you be back?”

“I don’t know that either.” He held my face in his hands and gazed at me, seemingly trying to memorize my every feature. “I love you. I’ll always love you.” Then he kissed me as passionately as he ever had and was gone, out the door in a flash of camouflage.

I never saw him again.

I’m not his wife or even his fiancée, so no one notified me of his whereabouts. And three months after he left, when I found a way onto the base in a desperate quest for information, no one there could tell me anything either. I tried to locate his parents and other people he mentioned, but it was like they didn’t exist. I could find no record of a retired general named West in the Marine Corps, Army or Air Force.

Furthermore, an exhaustive search for information on the John West I had known led nowhere. No high school, no college, no military service, no nothing.

Sometimes I wonder if I dreamed the two years we spent together, doing mundane things like grocery shopping, cooking, watching TV and sleeping together after long days at work. But then I’d remember the blissful passion, the scorching pleasure, the desire that ruled us from the beginning, and I’d know I didn’t dream him. I didn’t dream us. We were real, and he was everything to me.

Sitting on the floor in our apartment, surrounded by boxes, I take a few minutes before the movers arrive to memorize every detail of the place where we lived together. I’ve packed his things along with mine, and I’m moving home to New York. Today was my deadline. I gave it five years, and I simply can’t do it anymore. I can’t sit in our home among our things, waiting for something that’s never going to happen.

It’s over. It’s time for me to move on. It’s probably long past time, if I’m being honest with myself. And though I know it’s the right move at the right time, that doesn’t mean my heart isn’t shattering all over again as I dismantle the place where we were us.

My sister is getting married next month. I promised her I’d be home in time to hold her hand through the festivities. Other than occasional trips home for holidays and other occasions, I’ve been gone more than ten years. I bear no resemblance whatsoever to the girl who left home at eighteen seeking independence from her overbearing family at a faraway college out West.

I accomplished all my goals, finishing college, landing a decent job and falling in love with the man of my dreams. I found out what happens when dreams come true and how painful it is when they blow up in your face.

It’s time now to set new goals, to start over, to begin a life that doesn’t have John at the center of it the way it did here. It’ll be nice to be back with people who love me and care about me, even if they tend toward smothering at times. That’s looking rather good to me after years of loneliness and grief.

The intercom sounds to let me know the movers are here. I pick myself up off the floor and steel my heart for the day ahead. I can do this. I’ve been through worse, and I’ll survive this the same way I’ve survived everything else. Despite my resolve, my eyes fill with tears as I press the button that opens the door downstairs to the movers.

It doesn’t take them long to pack my belongings into their truck. I keep with me the things that can’t be replaced—precious photos, gifts he gave me, the clothing he left behind. After taking a final look around the apartment, I pack those boxes into my car, turn my apartment keys into the leasing office and head east, feeling as if I’m leaving behind everything that ever mattered to me.

It’s like I’m losing him all over again. I cry all the way through the desert of Southern California and well into Arizona. I relive every minute I can remember, every conversation, every special moment. I think about what it was like to make love with him and wonder how I’ll ever to do that with anyone but him. Maybe I won’t. Maybe that part of my life ended with him, and even though I’m only twenty-eight now, I’m okay with that possibility. Once you’ve experienced perfection, it’s hard to imagine settling for anything less.

The tears finally dry up somewhere in northern Arizona, but the ache inside… I take that with me all the way to New York, where I will try my very best to pick up the pieces of my shattered life and put them back together into some new version of myself.

After all, what choice do I have?

Tracey’s Review

I’m going to be honest, even though I love and adore Marie Force, after reading the synopsis for FIVE YEARS GONE, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to read it, that I could read it. I mean, I knew going in that it was going to evoke all kinds of memories and feelings, you know, the ones that we all have after any kind of attack on our own sense of national security. Helpless and violated, and completely bereft. But, then, I thought, it’s Marie, so how could I not read it, so in I went.

This book. Oh, my gosh, this book. As an avid reader and a blogger, I have the opportunity to read a lot of books. A lot of them are really good, a few less than memorable, but there are those that you pick up, and you stay up reading late into the night because you just can’t put them down, and that stay with you long after the last page. FIVE YEARS GONE falls firmly into the last category, and I could not have loved it more.

I was completely enthralled with this story of a second chance at love. This is not the second time around trope that I’m used to reading, but, rather a story about people that have been devastated by loss opening their hearts to love again, even when everything in them says otherwise.

I cannot even imagine having gone through the waiting, the wondering, the despair, that Ava has. That she is able to let herself fall again is a testament to the fact that Eric is such a solid guy. I absolutely loved him, and, let me tell you, he’s a total keeper. He stuck around when other men would have run, and his love for Ava is just palpable. I could not have been happier with the way that Marie brought this story full circle, and, while I was crying along with Ava, it just felt absolutely right.

There’s a wonderful cast of supporting characters, and they really make the story that much more enjoyable. There is no question that the second book in this series (yes, there’s more!) is already one of my top anticipated books of 2019, because I think it’s going to be just as fabulous as FIVE YEARS GONE, and I cannot wait. If I could recommend one recent read, FIVE YEARS GONE is it, because it was just that good. If it’s not on your TBR, it should be, because you will love it.

New Release + Blog Tour + Excerpt + 4.5 Star Review: Best Served Cold by Emma Hart

BESTSERVEDCOLD-banner1live.jpg

Revenge is a dish best served cold. Which is a real problem when the attraction runs red-hot.

Best Served Cold, an all-new standalone romantic comedy from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Emma Hart is available now!

BESTSERVEDCOLD-cover4

Trust me. I know. The only reason I decided to renovate my family’s ice-cream store was to serve up a sundae full of revenge for my a-hole ex who opened an ice-cream store right next to mine.

It was supposed to be simple.

Renovate. Reopen. Put his peachy butt out of business.

Until he decided to get under my skin—and broke my toe.

Now, I’m stuck with Chase in my store every day, helping me renovate. But he’s also in my head, and I’m spending a little too much time up against his abs.

Not that it’s the worst place to be.

But it doesn’t change anything. I still hate him, and I’m still going to get my revenge.

Right?

Excerpt:

“And there goes my water.” Rae got up and dumped the contents of her glass into the sink. “Thanks for that.”

I shrugged. “Can’t drill without dust, babe.”

“Can’t drill without dust, babe,” she parroted in a high-pitched voice. “Whatever. You can drill without contaminating my water.”

“Remember who’s doing who a favor here.”

She cocked one hip and put her hand on it. “The only reason you’re still here is because I bent over an hour ago and you saw my underwear.”

I couldn’t help the twitch of my lips. “That may be a contributing factor.”

“Oh, please. You keep staring at me just in case I flash you again.”

“Actually, I’m staring at you because you look hot as fuck in that dress.” I paused. “But I won’t deny that you flashing me would be a bonus.”

Rae rolled her eyes. “I don’t even know what to say to you. You’re ridiculous.”

“Ridiculously charming.”

“Ridiculously frustrating.”

“Charmingly frustrating.”

“You—” She stopped and pointed at me. “You are. You are. You!” she growled and stomped into the kitchen.

I choked back a laugh. “I am delightful, handsome, and phenomenal in bed!”

She came back within seconds. “If you’re trying to make me fall in love with you again, you’re failing dismally.”

“Technically, I’m not trying. I’m such a delight you’ll fall back in love with me anyway.”

“You’re a raging egomaniac.”

“And you are a beautiful ray of happiness.”

“And you—wait, what?” She frowned. “When did this get turned around on me? Stop complimenting me. You don’t compliment me when I insult you.”

I leaned against the wall, still holding onto the drill. “All right, you’re a miserable little shit. Is that better?”

Her lips twitched as she tried not to laugh. “No. You’re supposed to compliment me even when I tell you not to.”

“I’m not falling for your female psychobabble.” I pushed off the wall and looked for the next ‘x.’ “Compliment yourself. I have no problem doing it.”

“I compliment myself all the time. Have you seen my boobs?”

I shot her a side-eye. “Yes. I’m also fond of those.”

Rae folded her arms across her chest. It did nothing to further her cause of pretending to be annoyed. All it did was push her tits up.

“If you’re trying to make me stop looking at your tits, you’re doing a bad job.”

She looked down and immediately dropped her arms. “Yeah, well, shut up.” She sniffed. “How many holes are left?”

I scanned the wall. “Three. You should try one. It won’t kill you.”

She shifted. “No offense, but I don’t know if I trust you around me with tools.”

“I wasn’t even near you when you dropped the scraper on your foot. I won’t drop the drill. I promise.” I paused. “If anything, I’m the one who should be worried given that you’ve already dropped the drill once.”

“That was an accident.”

“Exactly.” I pushed off the wall. “Come on. You might learn something.”

“I doubt it,” she mumbled, wiping her hands off on her dress and coming to stand at my side. “Okay, let’s humiliate me.”

I laughed and drew her into my body. She nestled against me as if she were made for me. Her ass curved perfectly into my hips, and the gentle sweep of her back flattened against my stomach and chest like a missing puzzle piece.

“Wrap your hand around the handle,” I said, raising her hand to it. “And hold onto it. Tight.”

“I think I can figure that out.”

“Remember who dropped the drill.”

She sniffed. “I didn’t expect the wall to be so hard.”

“Rae, it’s fucking brick. Not marshmallow. What the hell did you expect?”

Tracey’s Review

As a lover of second-chance romances, dual POVs, happily ever afters, and certain authors, I’d say that all bases were covered with BEST SERVED COLD, the latest offering from author Emma Hart. There is not one thing that I didn’t adore about this book, and I’m still smiling days later.

Rae and Chase are meant to be, even if they haven’t both come to realize it. Rae is, as are all of Emma’s heroines, sassy, strong, and headstrong, to boot. She’s not willing to let the problems from their past go, no matter how much her feelings are telling her that it may be time.

I’m not sure that I’d have liked Chase at first meeting. Cocky high school guy, popular, I’d have been with Rae. But the Chase of today would totally win me over, because, underneath all of the snark and cockiness is a guy that just really wants a second chance with the love of his life, and is willing to do what it takes to get it.

I have been a fan of Emma’s books for forever, but I have to say, I am so happy that she’s found her niche with rom-coms. Starting one of her books never fails to make me fall in love right along with the characters, and keeps me laughing at the same time, which is the mark of a wonderful read for me. An easy 4.5 stars for me, BEST SERVED COLD is a feel-good read that fans of contemporary romantic comedies will love, and should make room for at the top of their TBRs.

New Release + Blog Tour + 4.5 Star Review: Guilty As Sin by Meghan March

Guilty until proven innocent.

That’s the way the world works, right?

I’m tired of being convicted without evidence, all because my last name is Gable.

The Riscoffs might own this town, but I’m done following their rules.

If only I could forget just how easily Lincoln Riscoff can drag me under his spell.

Tracey’s Review

And, finally, it’s here, and totally worth the wait. GUILTY AS SIN, the second book in the Sin trilogy, is live, and, oh, my gosh. All of the passion, intrigue, and complex relationships of the first book, and revelations galore. Color me one happy reader.

I’m always a little bit in awe of those authors that can continue to write books that are new and fresh, that don’t sound like they’re writing the same story over and over again.Meghan March is one of these, and a go-to author for me. Seriously, I don’t even need a plot description, it’s going to be on my TBR no matter what, and this is because she kills it, every single time. Dialogue, characters, plot line, she makes it seem seamless, and her stories grab me and do exactly what they’re meant to do, which is entertain, titillate, and bring me to my happy place.

After the ‘say what, now?!’ ending of RICHER THAN SIN, I needed answers, dang it, and Meghan gave them up in spades in this second book. Each revelation here is like clicking in the next puzzle piece, bringing the full picture more into focus, and the Gables and Riscoffs absolutely make one heck of a picture. Don’t get me wrong, though, there’s still plenty to come, and the anticipation is half the fun. REVELING IN SIN, the third and final book of the trilogy, can’t get here soon enough so that I can get ALL of the answers. Until then, grab these books, because they are SO worth the read.

A New York Times, #1 Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author of over twenty novels, Meghan March has been known to wear camo face paint and tromp around in woods wearing mud-covered boots, all while sporting a perfect manicure. She’s also impulsive, easily entertained, and absolutely unapologetic about the fact that she loves to read and write smut. Her past lives include slinging auto parts, selling lingerie, making custom jewelry, and practicing corporate law. Writing books about dirty talking alpha males and the strong, sassy women who bring them to their knees is by far the most fabulous job she’s ever had.
